The London night was filled with mist. Streets seemed to go on forever, shrouded by the wisps of vapor rising from the wet pavement. Downtown London never knew silence. This wasn't downtown, though. Here, on the outskirts of the city, almost everyone was asleep. The silence was only broken by the sounds of feet pounding as a young woman rushed down the street without a care for her current state of torn clothes and bare feet, having abandoned her heeled shoes a while ago to get away from what had happened a few minutes earlier.

Penny Clearwater could not stop cursing her luck as she forced her legs to move as fast and hard as she could. It was just her luck that she had to pull an all nighter for her job due to some idiots who do not know how to properly file the paperwork, but she was the only one available since her other colleagues had to deal with their set of customers so she had to do this. She should be thankful that she even managed to get a job with the company that hired all the muggleborns or muggle-raised half-bloods after graduation. Even for someone who used to be Head Girl with Outstandings obtained for all her subjects, the Ministry of Magic would not hire her for any posts.

Or for that matter, there were no positions in the magical world for those like her. A world where the purity of blood determines your position in life.

Her ex-boyfriend wanted her to find another job. That was easy for him to say, she thought as she left the office with the sounds of her heels clicking down the street. It was easy for him to find a job, after all he was a pure-blood. Even though his family wasn't well thought of in the wizarding world, they still didn't have any trouble finding good jobs in areas like the Ministry. Muggleborns like her, not so much unless they want to take high risk positions from Gringotts like curse-breaking.

Anyway, she left the office late and at the time, there were still a number of people walking about, so she decided to take the slightly longer route of going home rather than apparate directly to the doorstep. She also wanted to eat out rather than have a takeaway in an empty apartment after graduating and leaving her family home, if only to stop reminding herself that she was alone.

But then life decided to throw a curveball when Penny noted someone following her for a while, then two others joined them. Penny sped up her walking speed only to have more footsteps following her. It did not take long for her to be a slightly isolated part of the area and to have a group of seven men corner her for her purse, and based on their eyes, something that she did not want.

Unfortunately for her, the area she was in was a Null Zone, one of the many places in the entirety of Europe where magic was effectively dead due to an incident during the First Wizardry War. All magic would be leached or sealed off from these areas which have a bad tendency to develop spontaneously and vary greatly in size, ranging from a two-room apartment to one equaling the entire city of London. For wizards and witches like her, they would be reduced to muggles with no access to magic, and in rough town areas like where she was, they would be easy pickings.

Thankfully for her, Penny did not forget her roots and kept up with the different methods for women to protect themselves, including a pepper spray that she had modified to handle bigger groups, which helped her greatly in this, followed shortly by some good old hand-to-hand fighting. But there were too many of them and she got overrun and forced into a corner with a bunch of men leering at her body being shown from the torn clothes.

That was when all heard a sound that sent dread down Penny's spine and marked the start of a nightmare.

The sound of mirrors ringing in the ears, followed by the sounds of an animal growling.

At the sounds of the first screams from one of the men at the far end, Penny took her chance to squeeze through a jammed door and ran away as hard as she could, ignoring the additional screams and something mauling them as she stumbled her way through the random items in the building she entered and to the other end, kicking her shoes away when they proved to be a obstruction. She kept it up until she could feel her magic return to her body, giving her the chance to apparate out of the area and to the street closest to her apartment. Penny did not care much for how messed up her clothes were or how sore she was, she just kept running like her life depended on it until she was literally a few blocks away.

Just as she thought she could catch her breath, the sounds of glass ringing sent her heart-rate back up.

"Oh no!" Penny kept turning about herself, trying to find where the creature would come out from, which could be a problem as while there were no glass or mirrors, there were plenty of puddles on the floor and some areas where she may not see them. Penny immediately attempted to apparate only to knock herself to the ground with a splitting headache, barely noticing through the pain the tell-tale signs of a barrier coming about and a strange glow about her. The sound of glass breaking was what cut through her pain and made her look to a spot where there were actual cracks appearing in reality, giving the impression of a mirror being broken to show some reddish blue flame behind it. As if to compound on the strangeness, the flame parted partially to reveal an eyeball with the sounds of a very big animal growling menacingly. The cracks started to widen and spread until it was big enough for Penny to go through (not that she wanted to!), and then with a loud clash, something pounced out of the flames and landed hard on the ground.

"RRRRROOOOAAARRR!"

"Oh hell no!" Penny could not help those words as a beast towered over her by at least double her height. The beast resembled a lion made of stone with bronze paneling by the joints and dark blue flames that made up the mane and tail. Its body appeared to be littered with the scars of past battles, and the red eyes looked upon her with anger and hunger with its mouth giving off flames and smoke as it growled.

This was a Totem Beast, another remnant from the First Wizardry War. A creature born from wild magic left untamed and corrupted over a period of time. A creature that was well above her strength level.

She needed to run away!

"Arresto Momento!" Penny fired off a spell to slow its movements down briefly while she scrambled to her feet. It barely held for a second before the beast shook it off and bounded after her. Penny proceeded to fire off Reductos at the surrounding area to create debris for her to transfigure into barriers and other animals to slow it down and give her time to escape. She had read about these manifestations and knew that only certain people were able to go against these beasts, but they were few in numbers and scattered about in the world. There were a few Riders in Britain, but most were still training while the few professionals were under the Ministry payroll, and they would not be sent out anytime soon.

Her thoughts got interrupted when a shadow appeared overhead before she got thrown off her feet from the Totem Beast having leaped above and over her in a single bound and blocked her escape. A quick swipe of its paw saw her disarmed of her wand and one arm broken along with her getting slammed into the wall. Penny tried to move but the beast moved forward with speed and purpose, its mouth opened wide for its newly gained prize. Penny could only shut her eyes and pray for a quick death.

"Shoot Vent!"

The sudden proclamation from nowhere made her open her eyes in time to see silver objects whistling through the air and slamming into the monster, making it fly off its feet and crashing against the building to Penny's right, collapsing the structure on itself before she felt herself suddenly pulled away to her left and into the arms of someone catching her. That did not last long as they quickly got her to her feet and behind cover before moving on. Penny took a quick moment to get her bearings and peeked out of her cover to look at her savior.

"Is that?"

A few feet away from her spot, a male figure stood before the collapsed building. Under the moonlight, Penny could see that he wore a shining midnight blue jacket that complemented the dark jeans, all with glowing white lines that formed a pattern of a pentagram and what looked to be a dragon surrounding itself around a sword. He had gauntlets and greaves that resembled those of a knight's armor, but with feather-like patterns that glowed in a similar pattern as the jacket. The helmet, from where she could see, was a slick silver-gray with decorations resembling wings by the side, and when the man turned the head briefly, she could see the design on the front resembled a bird's head with glowing yellow crystals for the eyes and a mouth-plate for the guard.

The sounds of rubble moving drew her attention back to the monster that had clawed its way out of the rubble, snarling as it directed a glare at the figure. The figure merely took a stance to get ready to fight the monster, with one hand to motion with the index finger to taunt it. The Totem Beast let out a roar in reply and erupted from the rubble to pounce at the figure, who leaned forward to get within the personal space and unleashed a series of punches to force it back before kicking it in the head to get away from the monster and at the same time leading the two of them away from Penny.

As he stood up, Penny saw the front side of his suit, that of a chestplate that resembled a bird's plumage with a crystal in the center, with more armor covering certain areas to grant him a more knight-like appearance, and the left gauntlet had a more elaborate design than the right gauntlet, but perhaps the most prominent to her, a belt that had the family totem of the same design as the jacket on the buckle region with a pouch by the side and a small blade with decorative wings for the handle.

"I was right, he is one of them." Penny could not help the awe as she watched him. "He is…"

The roar of the monster broke whatever she wanted to say as the creature in question slammed its feet to the ground and unleashed a firestorm at the masked man who had to move to get away from that. After a few seconds, the man stopped to pull a card from where the buckle would be, and raised his left arm to slide the card along a slot evidently on the gauntlet, making the card glow briefly before breaking apart and getting absorbed into it.

"Shield Vent!"

A brief flash of light followed by a few feathers of light, and the man was now wielding a big shield that resembled the chest plate but with wings instead. The man slammed the sharp end into the ground just as the firestorm reached him, letting the shield take the full blast of the attack with ease. With that managed, the man poked out from the side and held out a hand at the monster, a ball of lightning pulsing at his palm. With a push, the ball got launched at the monster and began to electrocute it, making it roar in pain. The man went out of his cover and pulled out another card to use, only to stop when some red spells were sent his way, forcing him to step away.

"Aurors, stop what you are doing!" Penny had to resist the urge to introduce her palm to her face at the 5 Aurors coming so late to the area and attacking the one guy trying to save her. The lead Auror stepped forward with a rather pompous air, "You are not an authorized Rider! Step away from the Totem Beast and let a Ministry approved Rider deal with it! You are to depower and surrender yourself immediately."

For a moment, Penny, supposedly the Rider, and even the Auror's teammates were looking at the leader with baffled expressions. Hell, even the monster briefly paused to look at the leader in a manner that spoke of its own thoughts regarding the stupidity of those words. The monster decided to express that view by roaring out loud and breaking out of the electrical hold the Rider had on it, and pounced upon the Auror team. Four of them made it away quickly, while the leader was too held up on making a statement that he barely registered the monster on him before it slammed him to the ground and proceeded to maul him, ignoring the man's screams as it ripped his torso apart and then crunched on the head. The other Aurors' attempts to stop it merely provide a minor irritant to it. The Rider continued with what he had meant to do and slid the previous card by the gauntlet.

"Summon Vent!"

The sky briefly lit up before the sounds of an eagle echoed in the area and said giant eagle with white fading to blue feathers, armored limbs and silver wings literally slammed itself against the Totem Beast before tossing it to the side like a ragdoll. The Totem Beast roared in fury and let loose another firestorm only for the giant bird to blast it away like a candle with a single flap of its wings. The Rider took the chance to grab each Auror and moved them to where she was with a quick pop before returning to the battlefield with one more card to activate.

"Final Vent!"

The giant eagle appeared to grow bigger at that command and let out a shriek of power as wind and lightning gathered about it like a tempest. The Rider in turn steadied himself before leaping higher into the air than any man possible to where the bird was as it gathered all of the power into a giant sphere of blinding light and with a flap of its wings, launched the sphere and the Rider straight at the Totem Beast. The sphere connected with the monster followed shortly by the Rider who slammed his leg right at the sphere and into the monster's chest, making it roar in pain as it got pushed back a few feet with fire coming off it and its legs digging trenches into the ground. It did not last long as cracks appeared all over its body and then it exploded loudly to the point that Penny could feel the vibrations off the ground as she fell down along with the Aurors.

Penny took a moment to orient herself as she got back to her feet and watched as a small sphere of milky brown light appeared over the burning remains of the Totem Beast. The Rider walked forward and paused a few feet, briefly looking at a card in his hand. She was not sure what he was expecting, but evidently it was one he did not like as he shook his head while placing the card into the side pouch before using his hand to motion at the sphere. In response, the eagle swooped down to the ground and opened its beak to allow the small sphere move inside before closing it to supposedly swallow. The avian glowed briefly before letting out a shriek of victory and with a flap of its wings, rushed back into the air.

With that done, the Rider turned to look at Penny and the 4 Aurors left of the team before moving forward. The Aurors out of habit moved to block her from him with their wands raised. The Rider stopped a few feet before them and looked before nodding slowly as though approving of their actions.

"I believe there is a form to fill?" All blinked at that query that was delivered with a relatively young voice. One of the Aurors quickly shook his head and moved to grab something from his pocket, hesitating to hand him a few parchments. The Rider merely took the parchments and looked at them quickly before looking at Penny. "May I borrow a pen?" The woman in question just handed him one, letting him quickly scan through the parchments and quickly wrote something before handing them back.

"Right, the necessary forms are filled, you are not in trouble and the Totem Beast is defeated. I will be leaving now, have a nice evening." Before any of the Aurors could interject, the Rider jumped into the air and let the eagle from before grab him by the shoulders and fly away into the night. It would be a while before any of them could move on with the Aurors checking Penny for injuries and then proceeding with cleanup.

Penny however went back home, forgetting about dinner and showering to just go to bed, her mind ablaze at all that had happened. She could not believe that she would survive an encounter with a Totem Beast or be able to meet one of the fighters against them.

A Mage Rider in the flesh.

She was going to need a Pensieve for this, because there was absolutely no way her friends were going to believe her for this.

== Author Notes ==

I got inspired to write this idea out thanks to youtube recommending a few Kamen Rider episodes and the upcoming Fuuto Pi anime. I am a particular fan for Ryuki, so much of the inspiration is from this. I do plan to add elements like Blade, Decade, maybe Build and Zio. I do not know if I will include the Hocrux issue, but if I am, maybe I could make them in a manner where a character has to defeat and collect pieces to obtain the full magic.

On other news, I recently tested positive for Covid and I have been feeling horrible for quite a while. It is really messing with my work and social life T.T

Hope you enjoy this story idea and make sure to take care of yourselves in this messed up world of ours.

And I put my pen down for now... And pull out a certain card with sounds of mirror ringing...

Henshin!
