A few days later and things were still frosty between the couple. Eddie and Rachel hadn't spoken a word to one another. Despite living under the same roof and working in the same building, they had managed to avoid one another completely. They were sleeping in separate rooms, Rachel in the master bedroom, and Eddie in the spare room next door. Their evenings were quiet and filled with a deafening silence.
Eddie knew she cared about every student at Waterloo Road and would do everything she could to help them. It was one of the many reasons he'd fallen in love with her. But this, putting herself in harm's way? It was too far.
It was a Friday morning. Only forty five minutes remained before they had to leave for work. They sat at the kitchen table in silence, Rachel nursing a cup of tea and nibbling on some toast whilst Eddie drank his coffee.
Eddie couldn't help but notice Rachel shifting uncomfortably in the chair opposite him.
"Are you ok?" he asked, refusing to make eye contact with her
If it had been any other day and their argument hadn't been hanging over them, she would have told him the truth. She would have told him no. She would have told him about the back and pelvic pain she'd been experiencing for the last two days, as well as the fatigue.
Instead, she glared at him. He hadn't spoken to her in days and he was asking if she was ok? Talking to her like nothing had happened between them?
"Do you care?" she snapped
"You know I do" he answered calmly
"Really? Because over the last few days you've done nothing but given me the impression that you despise me!"
"Because you did something stupid and dangerous, Rach! You put our baby at risk, and yourself too!" he argued
"And if I hadn't, Bianca would have died! I'd have had a student's blood on my hands, Eddie, AGAIN! Maxine's death was my fault and I refuse to let something like that happen again!" she shot back
"But you could have died as well!" he cried
Rachel shook her head as she ran a hand through her hair. They were just going round in circles. The two of them were too stubborn to back down and let things go.
"I won't apologise for what I did, Eddie. I stand by the decision I made" she replied firmly
"Then we are never going to be able to move forward" he snapped, standing up from his chair
"I'll be in the car" he grumbled, storming out of the kitchen
Rachel flinched as the front door slammed. She sighed heavily, placing her head in her hands. Why did he have to be like this? Would they ever move on from it? Eddie was as stubborn as she was sometimes. He wouldn't let this go easily. What did that mean for them?
A tiny foot pressing against her stomach pulled her from her thoughts. She smiled softly, placing a hand on her bump.
"You're on my side, right?" she asked the baby growing inside of her
Instead of a kick in response, a pain ripped through her. She hissed painfully, gripping the table with an impressive amount of strength.
"I'll take that as a no, then?" she whispered as the pain tailed off
The baby kicked in response to her question.
Rachel sighed, heading upstairs to the bathroom to brush her teeth.
