It was meant to be a simple extermination run for Qrow Branwen to get his mind off matters.
Officially, he was going to check on one of villages that had been overrun by a Grimm horde, and take out any stragglers before firing off a beacon to alert the nearest kingdom, in this case Vale, that the place could be retaken for new people or even to expand if possible, then get out after the group managing such matters arrived with reinforcements to secure the place.
Unofficially, he was there to find out whether Salem's spies had been there to set up the village for the Grimm to destroy. Despite the small size, the village was in a strategic spot for people to attempt building smaller towns that could potentially lead to a branch off the main city of Vale, and that meant this place would become a potential hotspot for Grimm to gather unnoticed. Finding any indications of Salem's doing would help to get more clues to stopping whatever plans she has at hand.
There was another unofficial reason for him to take up the mission, one that was more personal for him.
Ever since his bitch sister had left Patch to return to her clan, Tai had been in a funk over the sudden departure and he was having trouble trying to take care of his daughter Yang. Summer had stepped in to help him, and Somewhere down the line, the two got closer and most recently, Summer got pregnant with a child of her own. She was certainly happy about it since her parents had passed away in her childhood and she always wanted a family of her own. And Tai was actually looking like his old self before Raven had left him. Yang was certainly enjoying Summer's attention and even called her mum while hugging her, although Qrow could tell they would need to tell her the truth in the future, and that would not be a happy talk.
Qrow was happy for them, really he was. They needed some happiness in this crazy world of monsters, and with Salem on the move in the shadows, they would need something to be joyful for.
His heart though?
It just could not bear the sight of Summer smiling so happily with a hand on her growing stomach with Tai wrapping an arm around her, when it could have been him standing next to her, had he been brave enough to at least speak the words he had held back all those years in spite of his stupid Semblance that kept stopping him from getting close to others.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sudden sounds of a child crying, something that by all accounts should not be heard of in an abandoned town or in a Grimm hotspot. For a while, Qrow thought he was hearing things because of his mood over Taiyang, Summer and the kids, but the wails were certainly echoing in the area, and to his mild discomfort, the howls of Beowolves answering it were quite close to where he was. Qrow leaped up into the air, and with a slight swoosh of the air, a black crow took to the skies to try and find the source of the crying.
It did not take long for Qrow to find the baby in question, and it honestly made his heart stop for a few seconds at the sight of the Grimm surrounding an infant in the middle of the village where an old statue of some guy stood. They were practically drooling at the sight of the morsel as they came closer to the baby, attracted by the noise and the scent of its fear, only to be halted by some odd barrier holding them back, but it was clearly taking a beating and it won't be long until they got a chance to get the kid.
Not on his watch.
The bird tucked in its wings and nose-dived for the ground, only opening them wide when it was a few meters off the ground, the sudden stop allowing Qrow to transform in mid-air to deliver a scythe face first into the Beowulf that had leaped forward for the baby, the momentum helping to slice the Grimm right down the middle and making both halves of the body drop away from the baby. With a flourish of his weapon, Qrow gave a cocky grin at the Grimm while beckoning them with a finger. He was in a bit of a mood and these guys were right there for him to get rid of his stress.
"Let's play."

"Any idea why Ozpin called for us?" Taiyang asked as the commercial bullhead was coming up on the last stretch to Beacon Academy. He was slowly rubbing the back of the woman next to him as she held a barf bag to her mouth and breathed deeply to control the urge to lose her breakfast. At least they were the only travellers there, although the flight attendant in the cabin was looking at her with a wary eye and a mop at hand. His daughter Yang was thankfully knocked out after eating enough sugar earlier to wear her out before entering the bulkhead and was sleeping in the next aisle.
"Nope, but it must be important to contact us and try to get Raven at the same time." Summer frowned at that last name, her old friend who decided to hightail it back to Mistral because she did not believe that Ozpin had the tools to stop Salem for good on account of her immortality, and that Taiyang was supposedly too weak to come with her. Summer did care for Raven, but that "might makes right" mentality really messed things up at the worst time.
"I hope nothing has happened to Qrow." Taiyang knew that Qrow was doing a lot more solo missions recently due to his sister's behaviour and his contacts in the underground, but it still made him uneasy knowing that Qrow was going out alone without backup. Sure, Qrow could back the big talk he would give, but Taiyang also knew he had issues from his past, and the recent upheavals from Raven and the latest pregnancy from Summer made things hard to get together. Taiyang also knew it was partially his own fault since he had let himself go from the shock of Raven leaving him without even a goodbye, so he had to pull himself together.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your pilot speaking, We are now landing at Beacon. Please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts. I repeat."
"Thank the Brothers, it is almost over. I do not enjoy barfing out my food during this period." Summer groaned before her cheeks puffed up with her face turning green and she went back to the barf bag for salvation. Taiyang winced at the gagging sounds and continued to rub her back while giving an apologetic look at the stewardess checking on them, the person in question merely shrugging.
Unseen by them, Summer frowned at the request made by Ozpin and hoped that Qrow was safe. Taiyang was the only one in their team that was not involved with the conspiracy, knowing only the bare bones of what was going on without going into the Maidens, magic and immortal enemy that can't die. He was more or less the open heart of Team STRQ, and they did not want to burden him too much. Now more than ever with Raven having abandoned Taiyang and Yang.
When she got her hands on her fellow teammate, Summer was going to give her a major smackdown, without even needing her weapon. There was a reason why she still held the winning streak against Raven.
The bulkhead landed and in a few minutes, the family left the bulkhead with Yang being carried by Taiyang. They were greeted by the blonde woman who was waiting for them on the landing pad. "Professor Goodwitch, it is nice to see you." The stern headmistress gave a light smile at the greeting.
"It has been five years since you graduated, I am no longer your professor. You can call me Glynda." Summer scratched her head while giving out an embarrassed chuckle. The blonde then turned to face the smaller blonde who had woken up from her voice and looked at her. "Is this your daughter?"
"Yes, this is Yang Xiao Long. The babysitter could not come." Taiyang introduced the girl who waved shyly before she looked around. "She is a little shy."
"Which is surprising given how energetic her parents are. I can only imagine what she would be like when she gets older." Glynda adjusted her spectacles while turning on her heels. "Come, Ozpin is waiting for you in his office." The blonde woman brought the couple off the loading area and to the campus, and the younger pair took the moment to soak in the scene and the memories of their time in the academy. They moved on to the clock tower that overlooked the campus and the southern end of Vale, getting into the elevator that appeared big enough to hold four teams worth of students if needed and made their way to the top where the headmaster's office was located. The two despite having graduated from the academy could not help the feeling that they were called up to explain why certain matters happened.
Usually involving their other teammates who would get into a lot of trouble.
"Ah, it is nice to meet you again." A man in a dark green suit and grey hair greeted them with a smile as he turned away from the window he had been looking out from. "It feels like a long while since I have last seen you, Taiyang."
"Hello, Professor Ozpin." The man greeted the headmaster while gently patting Yang on the back as she peeked at the headmaster. "This is my daughter, Yang."
"Hello there, young lady. It is nice to meet you." Ozpin smiled at the girl who shyly nodded before hiding her face. Chuckling at the child, he turned to Summer. "And it is nice to see you as well, apologies for asking you to come. Although I understand that congratulations are in order?" Summer smiled as she patted her stomach.
"Yes, three months now." She gave a gentle smile as she looked down while considering the child inside.
"Do you know if it is a boy or girl yet?" Glynda asked with a gentle smile. Summer shook her head while Taiyang smiled.
"We are actually going to leave it to chance and be surprised when it comes out." Taiyang then placed a hand on Summer's stomach while giving out a mischievous smile. "Although I would not say no to a boy."
"Oh please, everyone knows girls are best." Summer huffed with the older adults chuckling at the playful banter. She then turned to Ozpin with a minor frown. "So what is the matter, Ozpin? Did something happen?" She paused before continuing. "Please tell me Qrow is safe." To their relief, Ozpin waved a hand to assure them.
"No, nothing bad has happened. Qrow has replied yesterday that he has completed his mission and is returning here. But apparently he wants the both of you to be here regarding something he had found." Taiyang and Summer looked at each other before turning to Ozpin.
"Did he say what?" Ozpin shrugged.
"He did not say, although I got the impression that he was going to be amused by your reactions, and at the same time, he was uncertain. The last time I saw him like that was during your last year here when he was performing that prank with Taiyang." The aforementioned man let out a weak chuckle at the reminder while Summer huffed at it. So many thirsty women after her man, she had to be on the ball for that period.
Her thoughts got interrupted and all turned to face the elevator only to stare openly at the unusual sight before them. Taiyang was the first one to break the silence as he raised a shaking finger at it.
"What the?"
"Hey guys. What's up?" Qrow greeted them lazily, like it was natural for him to walk into the office with a baby strapped to his chest. Said baby was looking about in curiosity and tilting his head at the adults gaping at them, before waving at the little girl who waved back with a smile. "Sorry I am late. Got a little sidetracked."
"Qrow." Ozpin, normally the epitome of calmness before absurdity, had placed his mug on the table with wide eyes. "Is there something you want to tell us?"
"Yeah, plenty. Like the time I had to deal with the pony while blindfolded on the way to Mistral, or the village with the nice bar girl, and even the dog." Qrow was rambling before pressure descended on his shoulders, making all except the children look at Summer who had closed eyes and a smile that was scaring the crap out of the adults.
"Qrow, why do you have a baby with you?" Summer asked sweetly that sent shivers down Taiyang's and Qrow's spines while she stepped forward slowly and somewhat menacingly. "Did your days as a rake finally catch up to you from some pub gal?"
"Erm, Summer?" Qrow stammered as he took a step back. "That is not what happened."
"Oh?" The normally sweet woman was now giving out a very scary aura around her as she came closer, and Qrow found himself backed into the wall. "Then did you perhaps decide to pick up a child without a leave?" Qrow let out a whimper while the baby was gently lifted from the carrier by Summer who briefly turned off the scary aura to look at him.
"Oh, you are such a cute little one." Summer cooed at the boy who giggled at the woman making funny faces and sounds, before she looked at his forehead where an ugly scar in the form of a lightning bolt was. "Well, that is a bad Boo-boo there." Summer frowned a little at the freshness of the cut, and there was something unsettling about it that made her Aura and silver eyes itch. She made a mental note to have the child checked at the infirmary before she handed him to Glynda who looked like a deer in the headlights, uncertain of what to do. That stopped when the boy blinked and placed a hand on her nose, and the other switched the stern headmistress of Beacon effectively wrapped around his finger as she proceeded to tickle the baby while smiling at him. Summer turned back to Qrow with the scary aura back at full blast. "Well Qrow?" The man had to let out a weak chuckle at that point.
"I'm in danger."
Author's Notes:
So once again, Fanfiction is going stupid with the email alerts, at least the app has the notifications, but this is really annoying, and my account is acting wonky. So good thing this is cross-posted with AO3, but I am really thinking if I should move the other active stories over.
For those who do not know, my AO3 account is rwby1989 (same name as the other fanfic account dealing only with RWBY).
