"Where did Deku go!"
"He went round the corner!"
"He must be around here, find him!"
A young boy sniffled as he shuffled through the bushes, his clothes dirtied and torn by the fencing he had squeezed through and the low hill he had tumbled down on. He bit his lips to keep himself silent from the bruises and cuts on his body he had gotten from his attackers and his escape. He pushed himself to keep moving until he stopped by the edge of a big lake with a small island in the middle of it, by which point his strength gave out and he fell on his knees and almost fell headfirst into the water. Izuku took the moment to breathe slowly to regain his strength while thinking about what had happened for the past hour.
Midoriya Izuku was feeling very miserable right now. This was the third "anniversary" of his reveal of being Quirkless, and Kacchan decided to celebrate it by having his gang chase Izuku all over the area while none of the adults would stop them, the somewhat decent ones making a half-hearted attempt to tell them off but clearly showing their bias against him. It was by dumb luck that Izuku managed to outrun them fast enough to get to the closed off hill and he forced himself through the fencing and moved inwards to hide and ended up tripping over a branch that sent him down the hill and moving to get to this point.
He really hated this. All he wanted growing up was to be a hero, to save people with a smile just like All Might when he first laid eyes on the hero saving people from the bus. He did not really understand why people were so insistent on the idea that one could only be a hero if they had the right quirk. People had been doing dangerous jobs in the past long before the Dawn of Quirks came about, and he had known of heroes who don't have combat quirks to fight with and were still able to save people or stop the criminals. If they could do it, why couldn't he?
But reality was a cruel mistress, and people were not born as equals in this society that placed Quirks on pedestals. That much he learned at the age of four when the doctor that his mother had brought him to broke the news to them. Classmates he once thought to be friends now became bullies, teachers who were supposed to teach him were dismissive at best and outright antagonistic, and there was Kacchan who was slowly becoming someone he did not know nor like. Even his mother apologised to him for not granting him a Quirk, believing it to be her fault, when all he wanted was validation of his dreams.
Just because he did not win the genetic lottery, Izuku was relegated to the bottom of the social ladder, deemed a relic of a bygone era.
He hated his life.
Izuku looked at the water surface, the reflection showing a very sad sight of what his life was now. Izuku wondered at times if it was even worth going through all of this, and contemplated running away from all of this, but a (diminishing) part of him was saying that a hero does not run away from all sorts of problems, and that he should be able to handle this. That was being hammered by the increasingly cynical side who was saying that this was hopeless and that he should face reality that he was powerless in a world raising Quirks on pedestals.
He just wanted something to prove he can be a hero without a Quirk, he just wanted a chance!
His thoughts broke when he heard the sounds of his pursuers getting louder, the distinctive popping of explosions being a clear indication of who was arriving first. His heart clenched tighter as he looked about his spot, failing to see any place for him to hide on the side of the lake. The only possible hiding spot would be the island in the middle of the lake, and that was too far even if he was in good condition. The growing weight of hopelessness made him grit his teeth while he glared at the island.
He just wanted to be free of the pain!
He just wanted to get away from them!
He just wanted a place to hide from them!
Then suddenly with the sounds of his ears popping softly and the uncomfortable sensation of being squeezed through a narrow tube like he was toothpaste, Izuku stumbled on a patch of grass and almost hit his face against a tree, barely managing to stop in time. He turned on his feet to look at where he used to be and barely managed to see the spot where he was previously before he fell backwards through a hole hidden behind some tall grass with a yell. A few seconds later, the other children gathered around the bank of the lake where Izuku once stood.
"Where did the nerd go?" One of the kids looked about in confusion.
"Could he have made it to the other side?" The one with wings pointed to the other end of the lake.
"No way, that is too far even for us." A third kid with long fingernails looked about with confusion and slight fear. "Hey, you don't think he may have drowned, do you, Bakugo?" That earned him an explosive right from the blonde with spiky hair and bad temper.
"That Deku can't be that stupid. No, he is probably hiding somewhere around here. Find him!" He said that, but something started forming in his stomach, a feeling he did not like. He could see the partial shoe prints in the sand along with the small blood droplets that stained the area closest to the water. And this was the only spot that Deku could get to because of the placement of the path.
No, the damn Quirkless had to be around, no way he would have tried crossing the lake. Even he was not that stupid or desperate, right? If there was an island in the middle of the lake or even a rock, he might do so, but not the whole length of the lake to get to the other side. There was no spot for him to take a break in the lake.
The image of the nerd's mother appeared in his head briefly, making him shake his head while growling before he turned to move on to the forest with his gang following behind to check the place. He had better things to do and he was not going to get flak for this!
As for Izuku?
"AAAHHHH!" He kept screaming as he slid down the hole before hitting the bottom and tumbled about in a tangle of limbs before coming to a hard stop. "Oof!" Izuku could only groan as he laid on the ground to let his vision settle, then tried to sit up with some difficulty. After doing that, he looked around to find himself in some cavern that was relatively dry for a place open to the elements. He tried to see where he came out from and his heart sank at the hole above him. He was not going to leave from there. He turned and found a tunnel going deeper into the cave. Without any form of communication and much of a chance to climb out, Izuku got up from his spot and made his way into the tunnel.
Surprisingly despite being deep underground, the tunnel was brighter than he thought, and there was an incredible warmth that wrapped around him like a blanket. Izuku was slightly energised by the combination and went through the tunnel until he came out to an even bigger cavern that had him gasping at both the size and what appeared to be an entire lake further down from him. There was light coming from the ceiling that shone on the crystal clear water, with said water reflecting the light on to the walls in an array of colours that almost looked like he was in a painting. He was mesmerised enough by the light show that he walked into the water before he realised how cold it was. As he got out of the water, his eyes got attracted to something that nearly caused him to go into the water again. "Is that a house?"
Indeed, his eyes were not deceiving him. A few feet away from Izuku and seemingly grown from the walls of the cavern, a two story house made of stone and wood laid there with a stone dock leading into the water. Izuku scrambled to his feet and made his way to the house, hoping that someone was living there so that he could borrow the phone. As he approached it, he noted that his initial opinion was somewhat correct; from where the house was built, the rock smoothly jutted out and transitioned to wood in a very organic manner, and there appeared to be no joints for either material when it came to the corners. He wondered if a Quirk was involved with the construction.
Izuku came up to the front door and raised an arm to knock on it after a moment's hesitation. Much to his surprise, there was a click before the door opened inwards, and after a few seconds, izuku took the chance to try his luck and pushed it further to look inside.
He found himself in a somewhat modern home with an open concept that had a large living room with some outdated electronics, and it was a lot bigger inside than he originally thought. There appeared to be crystals embedded in the wall which started getting brighter as he moved inside, making him wonder if the lights were activated by motion sensors. He looked around but could see no one, and given the light coating of dust, no one was around for a while.
Not good news since he was hoping for help.
"Hello?" Izuku called out in the room, hearing his voice slightly echo in the house. "Is anyone there? I just want to borrow the phone."
"Who is there?"
"Wah!" Izuku jumped in the air from the sudden voice that answered him, turning about his spot to find the speaker. "I'm sorry, sir. I am just trying to get home. I will be out of your way soon!"
"Wait, you can hear me?"
Izuku blinked at the evident surprise in the question asked. "Yes, sir." The voice let out a hum at this.
"Curious. Very curious."
"Sorry sir, what is curious?" Izuku's question earned him a light-hearted chuckle as though the owner was amused about something.
"Hold on, let me see if this works."
Before he could ask, Izuku noticed a glowing orb of light coming out of the floor in the middle of the living room and settled to hovering a few feet above the floor. It was roughly the size of a basketball and was almost pure white with tinges of light blue and green moving about the surface along with wisps of light hovering around the edges. Despite the distance, Izuku felt the warmth from it like he was in bed with his blanket wrapped around him. Then the orb started to stretch and grow, losing its original orb shape and obtaining a more humanoid form roughly the size of an adult. Then it glowed brighter, prompting Izuku to close his eyes to avoid the glare. When the glow diminished, Izuku chanced peeking and then opened his eyes wide.
Where the orb was, a person now stood in the room, his clothes being semi casual with what appeared to be a silver cloak connected to his collar with a broach with the emblem of a bisected triangle inside a circle. His dark hair was more of a mess than Izuku's (which was quite messy on its own) with much of it tied into a ponytail. He looked foreign like one of the actors from his mother's drama shows, and he appeared to be around his late twenties or mid thirties.
But the bit that made him stand out was his semi translucent and greyed out body that gave the impression that he was a ghost, not helped when the figure opened his eyes to examine himself, showing green eyes that shone brightly, and looked up to find Izuku. He walked forward without any sounds and actually walked through the chair blocking Izuku from him to stand in front of him and looked down with a smile.
"Can you see me now?"
There was only one answer for Izuku to give in response to seeing an actual ghost in front of him.
"AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!"
