Transformers Prime: The Medic's Assistant
Chapter 27: One Shall Fall
Disclaimer: I don't own Transformers Prime
(Autobot Base)
"And it was written in the covenant of Primus that 'when the forty-seven spheres align, a perpetual conflict will culminate upon a world forged from chaos. And the weak shall perish in the shadow of a rising darkness."
Stormracer, Arcee, and Bulkhead looked at the Prime questionably.
"That sounds... grim," Stormracer commented.
"So, no skies raining fire?" Arcee asked.
"It goes without saying," Ratchet said, "it is a doom prophecy after all."
"I say it's a load of hooey," Bulkhead said.
"I always assumed the ancients were referring to our home world," the medic said, "but being that Cybertron has been dark for eons-"
"And considering what has befell on this planet since Megatron's arrival here..." Optimus added.
"You think it's talking about Earth?" Stormracer asked.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Bulkhead said, "we've known about these superstitions for ages and never gave them a second thought."
"Why all the ominous rumbling now?" Arcee asked.
Because the planetary alignment to which the prophecy refers to is nearly upon us," the Prime said.
Everyone went quiet before Bulkhead nervously chuckled. "Uh, crazy coincidence. Right?"
"Soooo, how long are we talking exactly?" Stormracer asked.
"A few days at the most," Ratchet said.
"However unsettling this news may be, I am more concerned for those that believe the prophecy speaks to them alone," Optimus said.
"You mean Megatron?" Arcee asked.
"Of course Bucket Head would think so," Bulkhead said with a frown.
"But if not him, then who?" the blue femme asked, "or what?"
"Who knows," Ratchet said, "who knows."
(The next day)
Stormracer couldn't stop thinking about the prophecy ever since Optimus brought it up. Though she found it very upsetting, she was still curious on what it was talking about. While she was working, she noticed Optimus had been looking at the large computer screen for a while. Curious, she made her way over to him.
"You okay, Optimus?" she asked.
"The planetary alignment is near," he said, looking at her, "and if Earth is truly the world of which the prophecy speaks of, then human kind is in danger."
"You don't think the rising darkness could actually be Megatron, do you?" the assistant asked, "I mean, I cant think of anyone or anything else as... well, dark."
"Megatron may follow a dark path," Optimus said, "but I believe the prophecy speaks of another. Something far worse."
"Like what?"
"That, I do not know."
"There's another thing about the prophecy that's bugging me," the assistant said, "it says 'a world forged from chaos'. What does that mean?"
"That is another question I am unsure of," he said, "though I have no doubt we will have our answers soon. We can only hope we find out before it is too late."
"Stormracer," Ratchet said, gaining the teal femme's attention, "I need your help over here."
Stormracer looked back at Optimus. "Back to work I go," she said before making her way over to the medic.
Off to the side sitting on the couch, the kids searched through a conspiracy website on Raf's laptop.
"No," Jack said as Raf scrolled down, "pass... nuh uh... kid in a costume... balloon...nope... oh hold on." The four looked at the picture of Bumblebee in his vehicle form, revealing there was no driver. "The camera sure loves Bee."
"What can you do?" Miko said, "when you're a super star, you're paparazzi bait."
"He does stand out quite a bit," Sierra said, "maybe he should try a different look. Maybe a different vehicle mode."
"Like what? A Volkswagen?" Miko joked.
Ratchet and Stormracer looked over at them and saw the picture. "Wait, is that Bumblebee?" Ratchet asked.
"On a conspiracy website," Raf said, "where users post evidence of close encounters. But we have it under control, Ratchet. We just scrub and replace Bee with..." Raf instantly replaced Bumblebee's picture with a funny cat.
"Mars cat says, take me to your feeder," the cat on the screen said.
"Ha!" Ratchet laughed, only for his smile to disappear once he realized what he just did.
Stormracer and the humans were surprised by his reaction. "Ratchet actually laughed?" Miko asked in disbelief.
Ratchet looked away, pretending like nothing happened.
Stormracer couldn't help but snicker. "Mars cat got your tongue?" she joked. All it took was a glare from the medic to make her smile disappear. She immediately looked in another direction. "Oh look, gotta finish cleaning over there!" she said as she hurried away from Ratchet. The kids snickered at her while the medic just shook his helm.
Jack looked over at the Prime. "Hey, Optimus, you wanna see something funny?"
"No," he said before looking back at the screen.
The four were upset by this until Arcee and Bulkhead walked over.
"Don't take it personally," Arcee told them, "Primes are built that way."
"Never seen Optimus laugh, cry, or lose his cool," Bulkhead said.
"I've tried many times to make him laugh," Stormracer said, "never even got a chuckle."
"While Optimus certainly keeps his emotions in check, I've known him far longer than any of you," Ratchet said, "and he was different before he was a Prime."
"Optimus wasn't always a prime?" Raf asked.
"On Cybertron, one isn't born into greatness, but rather one must earn it."
"So, different how?" Miko asked, "we talking party animal?"
"No, no," the medic said, "Optimus was more like... Jack."
Jack was surprised by this. "What? I'm nothing like Opt-"
"Prime!" Agent Fowler interrupted as he popped up on the big screen, "those tech heists my department's been tracking, we figured it was MECH on account of their stealth tactics, until moments ago when a security breach at the Pennington Ebbs Particle Collider captured this." He then brought up an image of the decepticon intelligence officer.
"Soundwave," Jack identified.
"Raf can swap that out for you with a funny cat," Miko said.
"What did Slender Con take?" Sierra asked.
"He made off with a cutting-edge phase conductor," Fowler said, "here is a punch list of everything we've confirmed stolen to date." A top secret file then popped up on the screen, revealing the stolen items.
"Plasma injector, neutron shield, tesseract?" Ratchet read out loud, "there's only one thing missing if they are intending to build another space bridge."
Stormracer groaned. "Not again."
(Time skip)
After a while, Bumblebee and Raf went racing while the others talked about Megatron's next move.
It wasn't long until the human liaison video called again. "Prime," Fowler said while in a helicopter, "the cons really stepped in it this time. They hit a U.S. military lab. Our boys in green will fend them off until your team shows."
"Agent Fowler, I fear that Megatron's desperation may be at its zenith, and you know that I cannot condone even a single human casualty," the Prime told the liaison.
Fowler sighed, but still made the call. "Fowler here. Evacuate all personnel, immediately."
Soon after the call ended, Optimus, Arcee, and Bulkhead were bridged to the location to deal with the cons while Ratchet contacted Bumblebee to have him meet them there. The medic and assistant then waited as they watched the screen. While they waited, Stormracer glanced over at Ratchet and smirked. "So... cats make you laugh, huh?"
"We are not discussing this!" Ratchet said with a frown.
"Fine," the assistant said, still smirking, "but I'm so showing you funny cat videos later."
The medic only let out a loud groan.
Off to the side still on the platform, Jack, Sierra, and Miko talked amongst themselves.
"You think Megatron is going to try bringing zombiecons here again?" Sierra asked the two.
"Whatever he's planning, it won't be good," Jack told her.
"Meh," Miko said while drawing a picture, "nothing our bots can't handle."
The three were quiet as the exchange student continued her drawing. After a while, Sierra looked at Jack as she remembered what Ratchet said earlier. It wasn't long until she started snickering.
Hearing her, Jack looked over at the redhead. "What?" he asked.
"I was just imagining you being like Optimus," she said, "I mean, if he used to be like you, maybe it means you will be a Prime someday."
Jack was surprised by this. "Wha- Oh come on. No way I'm Prime material."
"Let's see. You have good leadership skills, you're responsible, willing to help others," she gave him a grin, "sound familiar?"
"Still doesn't make me a prime."
Sierra thought for a moment. "I wonder what your name would be? Jackson Prime? Jackimus Prime?"
The boy gave her a look. "Really? Jackimus Prime?"
"You're right. Better go with Jackson Prime."
"Alight, cut it out," he said.
Sierra laughed as she nudged him. "Come on, Hotshot. You know I'm just messing with you... even though I think you would make an awesome prime."
Hearing her say that made him blush a little.
Just then Optimus' voice came in through the commlink unit. "Ratchet, bridge us back now!" The urgency in his voice made everyone in the room worried.
"We must have an autobot down," the medic said. Making his way to the controls, he activated the groundbridge. Everyone waited as they looked at the blue and green vortex. Soon Bumblebee and Arcee made their way in... holding a weakened Rafael.
The kids' eyes widened in shock soon as they saw their young friend. "Raf?" Jack said worryingly.
"No," Miko said.
"What happened?!" Ratchet asked as he and Stormracer rushed over to Arcee.
"Megatron," the two wheeler said angrily.
"Quickly, into my laboratory!"
Bumblebee explained what happened as they placed Raf on a human size gurney and connected him to a monitor. His condition was slowly becoming worse as he laid there unconscious.
"Rafael isn't responding," Ratchet said as he frantically searched through his tools, "we need to run a diagnostic on his assemblage- uh, vital statistics. Ugh! My tools, they're all wrong!"
"This is my fault," Bumblebee bleeped sadly.
"Don't say that," Stormracer told him, "its not your fault."
"We need to call my mom," Jack said as he pulled out his phone.
"Your mother may be a nurse, but does she know anything about the effects of energon on the human body?" Ratchet asked.
"Wha- do you know anything about the human body?!" Jack asked him with a frown.
Ratchet remained silent, answering the boy's question.
Jack immediately got a hold of June. "Mom, it's urgent!"
Ratchet looked over at Rafael laying on the gurney. "And the weak will perish," he said quietly, "be strong, Rafael."
Stormracer looked at Bumblebee. Knowing how worried he was for his human friend, she placed her servo on his shoulder. "He's going to be okay," she told him, "Ratchet and June are going to help him." She looked at the young boy. He looked worse than he did when they brought him in. She didn't want to say it to Bumblebee, but she was very worried herself.
It wasn't long for June to arrive as she drove in through the groundbridge.
Jack rushed over to her as she got out of her car. "Mom, thank-"
"Grab my bag!" she ordered as she ran over to the patient as Ratchet scanned him.
"Measuring the extent of the absorption should determine the proper course of treatment," the medic said as the human nurse checked the boy's pulse.
"If I don't get him stabilized, this boy will not leave this table alive, do you understand me?!" June said as she glared at the medic.
"Uuh," Ratchet said as he took a step back. Jack immediately brought June her bag as she went to work.
Seeing his friend looking worse, Bumblebee was soon consumed with rage. "Megatron will pay for this!" he bleeped as he slammed his fist against the wall, making everyone turn to look at him.
Arcee shoved him against the wall. "Bee, listen! You think I don't know how it feels to watch a partner... harmed? Revenge won't help Raf right now. You need to keep your emotions in check." She waited for the scout to calm down before she backed away.
Bumblebee looked at his human friend and let out a sad bleep. "Raf."
June continued trying to stabilize Raf with Jack helping her. The others helplessly watched, praying their friend would be alright. As he watched the nurse, Ratchet felt terrible for not knowing how to help the boy.
Optimus' voice soon came in through his commlink. "Ratchet, how is Rafael?"
"It is too soon to know," the medic reported.
"He is in good hands."
"Not mine, Optimus," he said, looking at June, "curse my Cybertronian pride. We've excepted these humans into lives, yet I bother to learn so little of their science, or medicine."
"Pull yourself together, old friend," the Prime said, "Rafael needs you."
"And I have grown to need him."
"Lock onto my coordinates and activate the groundbridge."
Ratchet did so, allowing Bulkhead to return to base. He joined the others as they watched June. After a while, June looked at her son. "Jack, help me get Raf to the car. He's going to the emergency room."
"Nurse Darby," Ratchet said, "your doctors won't be able to comprehend what's affecting him. Not without a decade of study."
"I don't have time to argue," she said.
Ratchet looked at the screen showing Raf's vitals. "The effects of an energon blast on an autobot can be devastating enough, but this is a human." He looked at the screen in confusion. "I'm not getting any readings." That's when he realized the problem. "How could I have not seen this. Rafael's been infected with dark energon."
Everyone looked at him in shock.
"Of course," Stormracer said, "Megatron has dark energon flowing through him. His fire power would consist of it."
Ratchet ran another scan on the boy. "If dark energon is devouring Raf from the inside out, we must expel it, and fast, the only possible way I know." He grabbed a canister from the table. "I need energon!"
"Wait, you said energon was devastating to humans," June said.
"Under normal circumstances, quite," Ratchet told her, "but I am relying upon the dark matter currently invading Rafael's body to meet it head on."
"Take my energon," Bumblebee said, holding out his arm, "for Raf."
Raf's monitor then started beeping rapidly, alerting them they were running out of time.
Immediately Ratchet took some of Bumblebee's energon, filling the canister before putting it in a slot. "I need him over here, now!" he ordered, pointing at the medical chamber.
Rafael was rushed into the chamber as Ratchet readied it. Soon as everything was ready, the door sealed shut as the machine started whirring. Everyone was praying for the medic's theory to be right as they watched Raf from outside the glass door. They soon found themselves shielding their eyes as the chamber lit up and exposed Raf to the regular energon. Once the light disappeared, the door opened, allowing June, the kids, and Bumblebee to rush inside.
June checked Raf's pulse. "Pulse rate is stabilizing."
The boy soon opened his eyes and looked at everyone. He looked at his guardian. "Bee?" he said in a weak voice.
Bumblebee happily smiled. "I'm here, Raf."
Everyone sighed in relief as Sierra and Miko hugged the boy. "Don't scare us like that again," Sierra said tearfully.
Stormracer happily hugged Ratchet. "You did it!" she said.
He smiled as he looked at June and nodded at her. "Yes, we did."
June continued making sure Raf was okay as he started feeling better. It wasn't long until Bulkhead told the others why Optimus stayed behind.
"Bulkhead, you let Optimus face Megatron alone?!" Arcee asked sternly.
"I didn't have a choice," he said.
"It could be a trap," Ratchet said, already at the computer, "we need to get a fix on his location!" After a moment of searching, he finally found him. "I'm locked onto Optimus' signal. Wait." He looked at the screen in shock. "How is this possible?"
Stormracer stared at the screen as a look of horror spread across her face. "What the...?"
"What?" Arcee asked, "what is it?"
Ratchet turned to face the others. "We need to get Optimus out of there, now!"
And that was One Shall Fall. Next chapter is One Shall Rise part 1. I already have most of it typed out, so hopefully I will update again soon. I've also been working on my next chapter for my other story so I may be going back and forth on both stories. Anyway, hope you liked this chapter. Until next time! God bless!
