Chapter One

The wind was howling outside, colliding against the windows to her side. Out of reflex, she had turned her attention to them, gazing through the streaked glass as the storm raged on.

Every thrum of thunder, every burst of lightning, every gust of wind… It was like she could feel it deep within her bones. Even with the walls separating her from it, she could still feel it deep within her.

The sky lit up as another burst of lightning flashed across the stormy gray clouds.

Footsteps caught in her ears as someone trekked down the hall. Upon getting closer to her, she noticed how they came to a halt. A second later a hand fell to land in her dark hair. The touch was comforting, and her eyes slowly closed as tension ebbed from her.

"Is something wrong, Kagome?" Lilly asked, his voice soft and soothing just like it always was when he spoke to her. There was a pause before she eventually shook her head.

Kagome turned away from the window, letting her glass-blue eyes lift until they settled on his face. His face was familiar, dating back to the most distant memories she was capable of recalling. "No," she said seconds later. "Just… watching the storm pass," she added.

Lilly glanced from her and out the window, his smile softening some. "Is that so?" he murmured. "It'll pass quicker if you go rest," he advised.

She glanced up at him before she looked away. "I know…" she trailed off. "I suppose I was just hopeful that it wouldn't get this bad," she stated, glancing back out the window. It wasn't long before his hand fell to cover her eyes, blocking her view of the deluge. Carefully, he pulled her from her spot and coaxed her into walking with him.

"You'll only keep worrying yourself if you keep this up," he stated in a light tone as he took her by her hand to lead her down the hall. "You know that."

She relented then, deciding it was better off if she followed along with him. It wasn't as if she was opposed to it. If anything, she was grateful for him to come along. She never knew how, but he always seemed to know when she was falling into one of those states.

Without meaning to, her hand gripped his own a bit tighter, and she lifted her other hand to sleepily rub at her eyes.

How long had it been since she last slept?

000

For as long as she could remember, she'd been by Lilly's side. Back when they first met, he went by a different name. The memory of it had been etched out of her brain, replaced each time he received a different name. Unlike him, the only name she'd ever had was the name he'd given her centuries ago.

Before him, there were no memories. There was no color, no memory, nothing but pitch-black silence. She didn't understand her existence from then, but she knew she must still have some part of it. Once, she'd tried to recover the memories from before, but all it left her with was agonizing pain within her head and her chest.

When she first met him, things were different. There wasn't the abundance of children that his subclass consisted of. He had been alone, forever stuck unaging.

The memories of that moment were spotty at best, admittedly. It'd been so long since then, but one thing always seemed to sneak up on her in moments she felt most forlorn and lost in her moods.

"Because of you, I have a reason to exist."

Those words, for whatever reason, always filled her with a sense of comfort and contentment.

Though she was no subclass, it made no difference in his eyes, it seemed.

No matter how old she became, no matter how she'd now grown to stand at chest height for him, nothing would ever falter or change.

She was his child. The first of many he'd taken in, and the only one who wouldn't one day depart from his side.

"Oh, this is horrible…"

Early the next morning Kagome had gone out to scout and survey the possible damages the storm might've done. Though a part of her had expected it, she was still upset about what lay before her.

She crouched so she was closer to the ground, her hands reaching out to gently lift the snapped rosebush that'd only been planted a few days prior. It never even seemed to stand a chance…

It was only one of many casualties in the garden she tended to. With a sigh, she settled onto her knees.

What a mess… She had a lot of work cut out of her now.

A warm pink glow formed around her hands and the snapped rosebush recombined like new. Afterward, she resecured the splints around it to offer it a better chance.

As she cleaned and repaired the scattered flowers and foliage, a chill raced down her spine. It made her straighten up as she rose to her feet, glancing back over her shoulder to examine her surroundings. Her eyes narrowed as she dusted the dirt from her palms.

What was that malicious aura she could feel in the distance? It was far from human, yet still familiar.

Auroua-chan: Gonna end this here.

The pairing is undecided, so suggestions are more than welcome! The first chapter takes place before Kuro and Mahiru's meeting.
