"The Color Purple"
When someone had suggested that she get royal purple dress robes for the Yule Ball, Fourth Year Hufflepuff Susan Bones smiled politely despite inwardly roaring with laughter. There was absolutely no way she would wear purple and have it clash with her hair! She empathized with the youngest Weasley daughter: their vibrant red hair just didn't go with any color besides various shades of green and neutral colors.
Susan was no fashionista, by any means–that title was given to Lavender Brown from Gryffindor–but she understood what did and didn't look good on her. But once one person had suggested the color to her, everyone began to do the same.
Madam Malkin during the summer asked her Aunt Amelia if she should bring some purple dress robes up to show off when Susan and Hannah were getting their new Hogwarts robes fitted. Girls all along the train started to compliment Susan's complexion and say something about how a purple flower in her hair would help bring out its vibrancy. Even Lavender Brown commented on the color during Charms class! Susan would hop on one leg and spin around three times while calling herself a bunny rabbit before ever admitting that purple is a color that a redhead could look good in!
And then Susan saw a First Year's pencil box with four people and a dog on it. The pencil box was rectangular and the right size to safely store inks, a blotter and a penknife, but it was vibrant enough that it caught Fifth Year Susan's attention in the Hufflepuff common room. The dog was brown, and on the box was a brunette wearing red and orange, another brunette wearing green and brown, a blonde wearing white and blue, and then a redhead wearing–
Purple.
'Scooby Doo' in a reddish orange text splayed over the pencil case, but Susan's breath caught in her throat as she stared at the redhead.
Why did purple have to look good on her?
Doubts now played in her head, and the summer leading into Sixth year, while filled with terror and anticipation and dread, saw Susan and Hannah back in Madam Malkin's shop. Susan had a purpose, and she beelined it for the fitting rooms as soon as she had her royal purple quarry in hand.
Hannah, her darling best friend, waited patiently for Susan to come out, a shop girl at her elbow to help with anything she needed. When Susan finally came out of the dressing room, Hannah had to stifle a gasp. Susan wouldn't have heard her anyway. She beelined it for the fitting stool, which had three floor length mirrors facing it, perfect for seeing how an outfit would fit.
With eyes closed, Susan stepped up onto the stool. Taking a deep breath, flexing her hands nervously, Susan opened her eyes and looked.
Her eyes widening and her gasp catching in her throat, Susan gave a small half-gasp half-sob in delight.
"Susan, are you alright?" Hannah asked quietly.
Hurriedly, Susan dropped down from the stool and began to hop on one foot. While still hopping, she then spun around three times and loudly declared, "I am a bunny rabbit!" She then stilled in front of the mirror again, reaching out in silent awe at her reflection.
"Susan, are you alright?" Hannah repeated, slightly alarmed. Susan gave another half-laugh in disbelief. Turning to her best friend, she couldn't help but grin widely.
"I think I look good in purple!"
