"Charta"

Author: rawar15

Well, it took a loooooot of time, but here it is, another chapter.

I know that it has been a few years now, since my last chapter, but a lot of things happened in my life, both good and bad, and also I simply didn't have any drive to continue anything. But now I found a little. I won't promise that I will post regularly, but I can only assure that this story isn't over, nor my other story. But between studies and my own personal life I won't have a lot of time. Still I want to finish both stories, even if it will take years. So that's it.

I hope that whoever you are, you will have at least a little bit of enjoyment. Even if it is crudely written.

Disclaimer: I don't own Undertale (author: Toby Fox) or any other characters or plotlines from fandom (like the whole story made by Jael Peñaloza) besides my own OC.

Chapter 2: "Waking up in the Void."

Silence, that was the first thing that welcomed him in his half awakened state.

Pure, overwhelming silence.

He didn't liked it.

He was accustomed to the constant noises of daily life. The sound of splashing water in waterfalls, crackling of fire in the fireplace, his brother snoring. But here, wherever he was, there was only silence.

At first he didn't want to open his eyes, he was still weak. The prospect of further sleep was really tempting.

But just as tiredness came, it went out with a flood of images.

Images that made him tremble and whimper in fear and anguish at the same time.

He began to see and hear things that he didn't want to see.

He saw fire.

He heard screams.

He saw and heard explosions and crumbling buildings.

He heard cries of dying humans and monsters alike.

He saw…. his brother. Sans.

He wanted to cry with joy, at least there was his brother. But the cry was caught in his bony throat as he saw his brother fully.

His brother, his lazy, ever joking, beloved older brother…. he looked horrible. There was red, a lot of red. On his chest there was red, from his mouth red came in streams.

He wished it was ketchup. He wished it would be anything then what he thought it was.

But he knew. Oh he knew what it was.

The smell that he remembered from his previous interactions with humans said only one thing.

That it was blood.

HIS blood.

And then suddenly he saw Sans begin to dissolve into dust.

And this time his voice didn't fail as he screamed with all his might and sorrow.

" SAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNSSSSSSSSSSS!"

Papyrus screamd.

At this one moment he was fully awakened, his eye sockets opened widely.

For a second he was stunned in his panic. But then came confusion.

"N-nyeh?" he saw only darkness, "Wait, why is it so dark? And why am I floating? Am I… Am I dreaming again?"

"Who knows my bony friend?" Papyrus heard someone talk to him from behind. "Some people say that everything we see, feel and experience is one big dream made by us or someone else. Others think that our dreams are actual reality and the one we see everyday is really a dream. But If you ask me, asking questions like that is very entertaining and enlightening, but if you will cling too much to this you will risk that these questions will devour you, making you forget about everything else. My advice, try not to think too hard about it, at least you will spare yourself a lot of headache. Trust me, there is time for questions and there is time when you have to take a break from them."

Papyrus turned around to see who was speaking. And let's just say he was quite surprised.

What he saw was, judging by voice, a male human floating in the void.

But that wasn't something that surprised him, no, no. What surprised him was that this particular human was dressed in odd clothes, well the most odd thing was coat as it looked like it barely stuck together, and also he could only see the human jaw clearly, the rest of his face was obscured by the darkness of his hood, leaving only his eyes visible. Green eyes that GLOW. Fascinating.

"...Look buddy. I know that I am good looking and all, but your staring at me like I was some Alien or any other entity is becoming a little annoying. And also some people would say it's rude to just stare and not say anything at all, or even greet." said an annoyed human.

"N-nyeh! Oh sorry."

The Human chuckled. "Heh, no worries. I guess staring at me right now is maybe even a better choice than staring into the darkness for a long time."

"W-wait! Do you know where we are?" asked, still a little shaken Papyrus.

"Well Yea! We are in the void." said the human as he gestured.

"That I already figured." said Papyrus sweatdroping, "But why are we here? Where is everyone? What happened? Who are you!?"

The human was silent for a minute, then he closed his eyes with a sigh.

"Well you are a curious one, aren't ya. But I suppose you deserve some answers after everything that happened." Stranger said stretching a little and then he looked at Papyrus with a serious look, "But I must warn you, what I will tell you isn't pretty at all. It is truly messed up, and I know that you will wish that what I will tell you is a lie. But know this, from me you will hear only the truth."

"Are you sure you want to hear that?"

Papyrus was now really worried and a little ticked. What did he mean, that he would assume he was lying to him. He was the Great Papyrus, Royal Guard Soon to be and Mascot of the Underground, he always believed that if someone says that he is telling the truth, then surely he says the truth. But now… Now he was a little worried. Judging by the serious look and hard and firm tone of his voice, the things that he would tell him, they really aren't pleasant.

"...Yes. Yes I'm sure." Papyrus said in a quiet voice, well actually he was talking this whole time with the Stranger in a quiet voice. Which in normal circumstances would be alarming but now, at this time and place, he didn't want nor have strength to use his Guard Voice. Yeah it was one of these moments.

"...Alright, If you are sure then let's start"

The Stranger took a more comfortable position… actually is there a way to have any comfort in the Void?... Welp, more questions for later.

Back to the present, the Stranger took a more comfortable position in the Void and began to speak.

"Ok. Let's start with the easiest ones. For most part I had many aliases and names but you can call me Nemo."

"Nemo? That's…. that's a peculiar name."

"Heh believe it or not, it has a meaning. But I will tell you some other time, normally it would be a part where you would introduce yourself, but you don't need to. You are Papyrus, correct?"

Papyrus was a little surprised, in a good way.

"Wowie! I didn't know I was THAT popular! But I guess my Greatness is known widely! Nyehehe!"

Nemo only smiled.

"Glad your spark didn't vanish, little one" he whispered.

"You said something?"

"No, nothing. Let's just get back to the topic." said Neo with a smile, but it soon vanished. "Now comes the hard thing, glad that you asked the three first questions because I don't have to repeat myself. So listen now carefully."

Papyrus leaned a little, fully focused.

"You are focused? Good. Now brace yourself because here we go." Nemo took a breath. "Alright. There is no need to beat around the bush, it's really bad so better to just tell you the truth. The Multiverse is dead and with it everyone else."

Silence.

"...You say…The Whole Multiverse…is destroyed? And everyone that lived there… Humans, monsters….. My Bro… All of them are just…..Dead?" Papyrus said in a hollow voice.

" *sigh* I wish that wouldn't be the case, kid. That it's all lies, but unfortunately it isn't. And God knows how much I would like it to be a lie. If you want proof then look over there."

Papyrus looked where Nemo was pointing and saw lights in the distance, not like stars but like small fires from candles. He could feel even here the magic that was bleeding from there. It was clear, if these lights were Universes then they were dying if not dead already.

But still, in this situation anyone would call things like this a lie and slap the person that said that, just to save themselves from the pain, but Papyrus wasn't like everyone else. He had a special talent that even Sans didn't know about, talent of Empathy. For humans it isn't something special, but for Monster it meant that he could not only feel and know about someone's emotions but also he could CHECK them and see if they lied or even reveal to him their secrets, it was always right (basically it's normal CHECK on steroids). In this case he wished it wouldn't.

The truth stung him deeply, and as he began to softly cry he asked only one question.

"Why?"

"...It was caused by many things, mainly by the individuals that thought that they had the right to decide the fate of the entire Multiverse. As you can see no one was right, and everyone paid the price of their pride." Nemo was silent for a while. "I guess it would be better if I would explain more."

"Everything started when two Skeletal Guardians of Creation decided to make a deal. A deal where Creator, or so he thought he is, called Ink wouldn't make new AU's and Destroyer, Error, would stop destroying them. At first it was good, both guardians respected their part of the deal. But later it became unbearable for Ink. You see Ink was a being that thrived when something was created, only then he would also feel because in contrast to other monsters he was soulless, and only by the act of creation he could replenish his 'Emotion Buttles' and feel. Also it made everything more interesting. But long story short, Ink was bored and starved so when he found Anomaly in Multiverse, he acted. He found a Universe where only a handful of things existed, you know like grass, flowers, air, but also in this world there were only three living beings. One adult and two small children. Their names were Gaster, Frisk and Chara."

"Nyeh!? B-but this names are-"

"They are like in your world, I know. But keep in mind that it was a different Universe." [To clarify, in the case of this particular Papyrus he witnessed a Perfect Ending where Player SAVED even legendary Gaster, who in this AU was Father to Skele-bros, from his prison in the Void. So yeah Papy knows about good old Gaster and slightly about the Void.]

"Back to the topic. There were only these three there. Gaster as much as he could provided food and care to the little ones, and they were happy. At least the little ones, because Gaster wasn't happy at all. He was saddened that he can't give children the kind of life they deserve. He had amazing power, power that was an anomaly in the entire Multiverse, power to Overwrite. This power granted him the ability to change timelines and Universes as he pleased. But before he met Ink he couldn't make a lot of things. Because he was born in an unfinished world his own knowledge was limited and so his imagination, his gift was a waste at that time. But when Ink showed him other AU's he finally knew how to use his gift. And he used it. He created Home worthy to live in. And for a while it was good. But as the years went by he became unsatisfied. He grew jealous of the other AU's, he thought that his must become perfect. So he changed it, then again, and again, and again. With each change he was also changing. Gone was a beloved Doctor that wanted to protect his Children. Instead because of his jealousy and pride, and also Inks influences, he grew into a narcissistic, megalomaniac that thought he was a GOD. That's how Xaster came to be. His charges tried to stop him, but in the end he was too strong for them. Then came his Grant Plan, to make one Perfect Universe that would replace the Multiverse, where he would be a Supreme God. Of Course there was some opposition from others. Sanses and other people from all Universes, both good and bad, united against him but he together with Ink won the fight. He almost succeeded in his plan, but he didn't know that the Multiverse wasn't Inks creation, but someone else. Someone that knew that somebody would like to destroy their work, so they installed a protection in their design. A trap for Greedy. A trap that was sprung by Xaster. In one moment he and Ink lost all control over their powers and it destroyed them and everything around them. Before you ask, I have found you literally before the final bell and saved you from annihilation by taking you to the literal border of your Multiverse. And here we are."

Papyrus was stunned. Truth be told this explanation was a little confusing, scratch that, very confusing, but still he now knew what happened. Then he remembered something.

"All ... .Everything was on f-fire… these s-screams… these cries… my brother turning into d-d-dust…. all of it… was it real?" asked Papyrus with a hint of hope that Nemo would tell him that no, it wasn't real. But he was wrong.

"So you finally remember, heh? No, Papyrus. Everything that I told you and you saw back then was real." said with tired eyes Nemo.

Papyrus wasn't even trying to hold back tears, earlier he wept a little, now it became full flood. And he had the right to it, he lost everything, everything besides his life.

Then suddenly he felt something else, something that wasn't sorrow. This fiery feeling in his chest, feeling that made him clench his hands. He felt angry.

"...You said that you saved me, right?"

"...Yes."

"Then if you could save me, then WHY didn't you save others."

Nemo frowned.

"I couldn't Papyrus."

"Why?"

"It wouldn't work-"

"HOW IN THE UNDERGROUND IT WOULND'T WORK! YOU SAVED ME, SO IT WORKED. THEN WHY!? WHY YOU DIDN'T SAVE ANYONE ELSE!? WHY YOU DIDN'T SAVE THEM!? WHY YOU DIDN'T SAVE MY FRIENDS, MY BROTHER!? WHY YOU DIDN'T SAVE THEM!?"

"BECAUSE IT'S A MIRACLE THAT I EVEN SAVED YOU, YOU UNGRATEFUL PILE OF BONES!" Yelled now angry Nemo.

"...A mira-"

"YES! A GODDAMN MIRACLE!" Nemo interrupted, "YOU THINK THAT I DIDN'T WANT TO HELP THEM! TO SAVE THEM!? THAT I DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO SAVE AT LEAST A FEW OF THEM, THAT I DIDN'T TRY SAVE YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR FAMILY. NEWS FOR YOU BONEHEAD, I TRIED! AND YOU KNOW WHAT, I WAS TOO LATE, I DIDN'T CATCH MY CHANCE TO SAVE THEM AT ALL, AND THE ONES THAT I TRIED TO SAVE, ALL OF THEM DIED ON THEIR WAY HERE. ALL EXCEPT YOU! YOU WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO SURVIVE JOURNEY TO THE 'BORDER' AND LIVE ANOTHER DAY. SO DON'T TELL ME I DIDN'T TRY. DON'T YOU FUCKIN DARE!"

After this heated speech for a few minutes there was only silence. Nemo was breathing deeply, just to calm his nerves. And Papyrus…
Papyrus was lost, he didn't know anymore anything, what to do, what to think, he was just empty. The reality of massive extinction not only his universe BUT also WHOLE MULTIVERSE was finally setting in.

"I…I'm sorry" said Papyrus with regret.

"...No, It's me who should apologize, not you. I shouldn't snap at you like that, so I'm sorry"

"...It's forgiven"

(more silence)

"...You said that you tried to take others with you here…can…can you tell me what happened to them? I mean… why didn't they make it?" asked Papyrus again with a small voice, he now was just tired and simply curious.

"...Are you sure?"

"Please."

"...*sigh* Allright. Here we go." said Nemo with a look of resignation.
"To tell you why they…died along the way I would have to explain to you about both the nature of your multiverse and void, but that is waaaay too complicated so I will give you a more simple version. Void and I don't mean here void in your universe but actually the Void is a very harsh place where only my kind can move freely without any harm."

"Nyeh? Then why am I still alive?"
"I was actually going to tell you, so please don't interrupt," Papyrus uttered a quick apology, "Thank you. So as I was saying only beings like me can move freely here, but beings that were born inside this multiverse… well for them the True Void is a very dangerous place. It is basically, how to put it, corrosive."

"Corrosive?"

"Yes, corrosive. This whole place…. If anyone from your multiverse would try to cross it on their own, I guarantee to you that not only their body but also their soul would be destroyed within seconds."

Nemo looked away for a moment with pity.

"Trust me, I saw this too many times in my life and it still gives me nightmares… But going back to your question why in ever loving God you are alive, well my friend it all comes down to your soul."

"Nyeh? What do you mean?"

"Your soul, my bony friend, even though it looks normal, in its core is exceptional."

Papyrus was surprised. His soul was special? But his soul was like any other monster soul… Ok, maybe he has more orange/bravery in it that other monsters don't have, but still it is as normal as it can get.

"I see you want to know what is so special about your soul, eh?" Said Nemo smirking, and then he continued.

"You know, for now I will give you short answer for now-"
"Why short one?"

"Because the full answer is very complicated and explaining all of it would take a lot of time. Also I don't think that I should reveal everything right now to you. No offense but it would be simply too much, considering everything else."

"None taken."

"Alright, let's see…. As I said before your soul is special, but I didn't mean just among monsters, no. What I meant was that your soul is perhaps one of its kind in your whole universe."

"...NYEAH!" Papyrus could only gape when Nemo said that. His soul was one of its kind IN WHOLE FRICKIN MULTIVERSE. Alright, this escalated quickly. So quickly that it made Papyrus a little dizzy.

"Hold up, I didn't finish-"
"THERE IS MORE!?"

[NO! (Soldier from TF2)]

"Yes, your soul is THAT special, but let me finish. It is unique for one thing. And that is its level of development." Papyrus looked at Nemo, raising his eyebrow…Wait, he is a skeleton. Then what he raised…. You know what, screw it let's back to the story.

"Tell me Papyrus, have you ever heard about something like evolution?"

"...Nyeah? Evolution?... I think Magnificent Doctor Alphys may have talked about it with sans before, something about races changing, becoming better with lots of time."

Nemo sweatdroped.

"That's oversimplifying, but you are on the right track." Nemo paused for a second, " To put it in simple terms, evolution is a process in which a race or species across many generations, will experience changes both in their physical and mental aspects that ultimately serve for better adaptation to their environment. I could say more here but it would quickly turn into an academic lecture, and right now it is unnecessary. But now you know more or less what evolution is. Now, when I said that your soul is on another level then souls of the others, I meant that it is another level of evolution." Nemo started floating in a pacing like pattern, "You see, souls of every being in this multiverse, no matter how much power they held, were by any means the same. And I don't mean about their individual power but I mean that all of them had to obey a set of pre-made rules of this multiverse. At least until now. I don't know how, why or even when, but your soul just evolved into something greater than anything in your multiverse." said Nemo with a small smile.

Papyrus for a moment didn't move, didn't even blink. And then he literally shouted (in his way):
"WOWIE! SO IT IS TRUE THAT THE GREAT PAPYRUS IS TRULY GREAT. I MEAN I KNEW THAT BEFORE, BUT NOW IT IS A MULTIVERSAL FACT! NYEHAHA!"
Nemo flinched and sweatdropped at the same time when star-eyed Papyrus yelled with glee.
"But wait… What do you mean evolved into something greater?"
"...*sigh*" Nemo rubbed his temples, "Papyrus, I told you I will give you a short answer for now."

" Nyeh? But it doesn't explain anything. I mean, you still didn't told my how I survived, or how and why my soul evolved and into what, also you didn't told me-"
"Shush!" said Nemo as he covered Papyrus's mouth… jaw? Why do I even bother?

"Papyrus please. I know you want to know everything about your situation, but for the love of everything that is good and holy, can we talk about it later?" pleaded Nemo.
"But-"
"Papyrus, please. There will be more time and occasions for explanations later. But right now I think there are more important things to do right now."

"Nyeah? Like what?"
Nemo smirked, "Well I don't know about you, but I am personally tired of this endless flight."
The tall skeleton looked with confusion at Nemo.
"But what can we do? I mean, not that the GREAT PAPYRUS is worried or anything, but didn't you say that everything was destroyed?"

Nemo looked at Papyrus with something akin to mirth.
"Oh my dear friend, but who said that we will look for shelter in any of the universes."
Now Papyrus was truly and utterly confused (...again).
"What do you mean?"
Nemo turned around to look at the dying Multiverse.
"Well, as the saying goes around my people…" Nemo began taking something from his coat, "...if you can't have something then what you should do?"
Nemo again was looking at Papyrus, but now he was holding in his hand a fishing rod like device, but instead of a hook on the end of the rope it had….. A dream catcher?

"You just make it yourself."
"...SAY NYEAH!?"
