Chapter Eighty-Two: A Mother-in-Law's Despair

Touya scanned the crowd as he drove slowly down each thickly packed street.

Inuyasha wasn't completely stupid. The man knew how to use a crowd to his advantage and get lost in the sea of faces.

He'd called his chief and updated him on most of the situation. He'd purposefully neglected the part about Inuyasha's connection to his own wife. Even if he got into trouble later, he wouldn't risk being taken off of this case.

He would not be able to rest until they had Inuyasha behind bars. Even then he wouldn't be able to relax until he was certain that the bastard would never see the light of day again.

Touya opened his security camera app on his phone and quickly checked the feeds to be safe. Against his better judgment, he'd installed more throughout the house. One in the kitchen and living room, one that captured the stairs, one that had a full view of the upstairs and one in the twins' room. He'd already decided that they would remove them after Inuyasha was captured but for now this gave them a more secure view of their home.

Touya smiled when he saw that Kagome had fallen asleep in her favorite rocking chair in the boys' room. Ohagi leapt out of the crib where Katsuo and Tatsuo were sleeping. Their cat gave a low mewl as he jumped onto Kagome's lap and curled up against the slight swell of her stomach. He found himself feeling somewhat envious of the feline. Thanks to this case, he hadn't been able to spend as much time as he'd liked with his wife.

"How're the boys?" His dad peered over his shoulder in order to catch a glimpse of the children.

Touya rolled his eyes.

Could the man be any more obvious?

"They're asleep." He answered after a short moment. He then closed the app and refocused his attention on the search.

His chief had given each of them a current picture of Inuyasha and ordered them to bring him in if they found him. So with the entire city on the look out, it was only a matter of time before he was caught.

Touya drove towards the hospital. Hawks mentioned that Inuyasha had been hanging out around there recently. Maybe they could catch him unaware.

"I finally got some of the records that I requested from the hospital." Touya spoke to his father. "Turns out that Momo set up an ultrasound for Kikyou that day. Now I'm no expert but I like to think that there's more to life than just coincidences."

"You want to talk to their mother." Endeavor asserted.

He nodded in return, "Something about this is bugging me. According to Kikyou she reached out to Momo when Inuyasha started stalking her. So how is it that Inuyasha knew which city Kikyou was in and the exact date and time of her ultrasound?"

He watched as Endeavor's expression hardened, "You think Momo started all of this?"

"I don't know for sure," Touya then turned the cruiser around. He'd gotten the address of where Momo was staying through his colleagues. So he set a route to the hotel she was currently staying at. He continued, "It's possible Inuyasha was just following news of her hero work but that wouldn't explain how he knew about the ultrasound appointment. We need to verify if he's got a source feeding him information or if he's put some sort of tracking device on her."

The sooner they determined which it was, the more they could narrow down their search.

It didn't take long for him to pull up into the four star hotel Momo had booked for herself. She was currently booked to stay for the rest of the week but she had provided his colleagues with the Shrine's address in case they needed to reach her afterwards.

Touya announced himself to the front staff and requested that he be allowed to head up to her room. After showing his badge and taking notice of Endeavor, the concierge placed a call to Momo's room. It only lasted for a few seconds but they were then permitted to go up.

When they reached the door, he found Momo had left it open and invited them in.

"I take it that the police have more questions for me?" Her eyes settled on him but he realized that she was unable to recognize him. Without his scars, only a spare few people realized who he was. Changing his surname had also helped with that.

Touya took a breath through his nose. This would work to his advantage.

"I wanted to ask you more about your daughter. You say that she contacted you last week and told you about her pregnancy, correct?" He started with the most basic of information. To catch a rat in a lie, he'd first have to make her feel as if they needed her.

Momo's lips curled up in disgust, "That is correct but I've discovered that she's carrying the offspring of a filthy creature." The woman's face contorted with fury, "That vile cretin had the gall to call me a worthless mother. Me!"

He fought the urge to laugh at the image. It seemed as if Higuchi had taken his advice the other day and told Momo to shove it.

Momo folded one leg over her knee, "As if having one failure of a child wasn't bad enough. Now the one that had all of the opportunities of the world provided to her has chosen to throw her lot in with an inhuman beast."

Touya fought to keep his temper under control. He could deal with the woman's barbs just long enough to trap her in a lie.

"You know," Momo slid her gaze towards him. "You'd make a fine husband for her. Nothing at all like the heteromorph she's shacking up with or the scarred brat my other failure chose."

The flames around his father's face and shoulders flared with his fury.

Touya roughly shoved his elbow into the man's side. The flames died down while Momo remained blissfully unaware of their interaction, her eyes focused on the city beyond her window.

"Were you the one who scheduled Kikyou's ultrasound at the hospital?" He questioned her. Of course he already knew the answer but he needed her to make a mistake.

The older woman's lips dipped, "I did but I scheduled it before she told me who the father of her unborn wretch was." She pressed her palm to her face in a show of despair. "Where did I go wrong with the both of them?"

He had an entire book he could hand to her on that topic but chose to kept quiet.

"Kikyou cut me off after she graduated." Momo's voice was barely a whisper. "I was happy when she finally called me and told me that she was pregnant. I was hoping that maybe this could be a sign that she'd seen the error of her ways. However I was wrong."

Touya felt himself bristle when she glanced at him.

"I ran into my other daughter not too long ago. She was with some woman I'd never seen before and had twin boys." Momo's lips curled into a vicious smile, "She was always a disappointment to me. When I saw the stroller I thought maybe there might be some hope for her but just like always, that wasn't the case. Still, it looks like the scarred freak at least gave her cute children. Better than the malformed beast Kikyou is about to have."

He needed to end this quickly before they both lost their temper.

"Have you heard anything from Inuyasha recently?" Touya decided to cut to the heart of the issue.

Momo slowly lowered her arm. Her gaze peered up at him cautiously, as if attempting to determine how to answer him without implicating herself.

"He tried reaching out to me but I told him nothing." Momo answered firmly.

Touya nodded, "Thank you. That's all we needed to know."

With that he turned on the ball of his heel.

He paid the woman little mind as he and his father both left the hotel.

"That woman is a freak." Endeavor growled beneath his breath.

Touya found himself nodding in agreement, "She always has been."

He paused as he caught sight of Hawks' contact flashing across his phone. The man had split off from the earlier so that they could cover more ground.

He quickly answered the call and froze when he heard the panicked tone of his colleague's voice.

"He's picked up her scent!" Hawks shouted into the transceiver. "He's heading for the house! Get there as fast as you can!"

Touya quickly threw on the lights and sirens of his cruiser as he threw it into drive.

They were going to end this today.
