Chapter Eighty-Three: Capture

Kagome stirred.

The room had sounded entirely too quiet. She could no longer hear the sound of Ohagi's soft purrs nor the adorable giggles Tatsuo would emit while he slept.

She felt a rush of ocean breeze and her heart suddenly froze in her chest.

The window was open.

She knew that she'd closed it when she came in here. So why was it open now?

Ohagi gave a low warning growl.

She'd heard her cat get angry before. Often hissing and yowling at men that got too close to him. However this was different. It was deeper and made an icy chill run up the length of her spine.

Instinctively, Kagome reached into the crib and swept both of her sons into her arms.

She would rather take them downstairs with the rest of the family for the time being.

When she turned around, she found what Ohagi was hissing at; or rather who.

Nestled in the far corner of the nursery was Inuyasha. His eyes were wild and bloodshot and his clothes were unkept. It looked as if he hadn't slept inside a home in over a month.

Kagome held still as she watched his silver hair billow in the gentle ocean breeze. Her gaze slid towards the door. She'd left it ajar when she came in earlier but now it was completely shut and both locks were engaged. With the twins in her arms, she knew that she wouldn't be able to undo the safety locks in time.

She could hear her family downstairs laughing and talking amongst each other. They weren't far so she knew that she wasn't completely out of options. The real issue would be if she could keep both herself and her boys safe before they could break down the door.

Ohagi puffed his fur as he positioned himself between them. The cat hissed and spat, taking threatening swipes at Inuyasha's legs in a fierce warning.

He ignored the creature, his eyes focusing on her with an intensity that made her throat go dry.

She didn't need a degree in psychology to know that he'd lost whatever semblance of sanity he'd had left.

Katsuo stirred in her arms. The boy gave a piercing wail as he wriggled in her arms. Tatsuo, upset that his brother was crying, joined in.

"Shut them up." Inuyasha growled low in his throat.

Kagome shivered, taking a cautious step backward. Katsuo's crying grew louder and pitched into a high squeal she'd never heard from him before. Her family suddenly grew quiet as they took notice of Katsuo's piercing cries.

"I said, shut them up." Inuyasha flexed his claws, taking a menacing step forward.

Kagome took another back, her shoulders running into the wall.

"Why are you so fixated on me?" She tried to keep him distracted. It wouldn't take long for Rei or Sesshoumaru to check on them with the way her twins were crying. Afterwards they would likely be able to break the door down. She wouldn't rush jumping out the open window. Not with her boys and unborn children depending on her.

Inuyasha stepped closer. That time Ohagi swiped at his legs, catching the cloth of his pants. It was a near miss and her cat was growing more agitated by the second. She had no arms left to pick the feline up, so she tried to redirect Inuyasha's attention.

"I asked you a question." Kagome fought to make her voice sound commanding. "Why are you fixated on me? Even when we dated, you couldn't be faithful. So why are you doing any of this?"

His lips curled back into a deep snarl, "Because you're mine!" Inuyasha bowed his chest and took another step towards them. "It shouldn't matter who I sleep with, you should've known that you were mine! I told you that I wouldn't let anyone else have you!"

She could recall the very moment he spoke of. It'd been back at Sesshoumaru's manor when they had gone to visit. Both of their parents had been in a meeting with his half brother. Kikyou had wandered off on her own after getting annoyed by Inuyasha's hyper-focused attention on her. She had patted the boy's back and comforted him while he cried over being rejected. After he felt better, he promised that he'd marry her and asked her to not let anyone else steal her because he wouldn't let anyone else have her. She'd thought it was just a cute childhood promise at the time. Now though, she could only feel a fierce anger.

Kagome felt her temper rise, "We were children! I was barely ten when you made that promise! I'm married and have my own kids now!"

She heard fists pounding on the door followed by her family's worried cries for her to let them in. She wanted to. Honestly she wanted nothing more than to fling that door open and escape out of the house. However her path was blocked and she had no choice but to protect her children while she waited for any sort of help to arrive.

"Step away from her." Endeavor's voice came through the camera's stereo system. She heard the tell tale sound of sirens going off in the background, signaling that Touya was currently driving back home.

Her father-in-law continued, "Back away slowly and put your hands in the air."

She had to admit that hearing it over the speaker system didn't have the same effect as it would if they'd been physically present.

"No, I don't think I will." Inuyasha hissed at the camera. "Why don't you get over here and stop me yourse—!"

He was cut off when Ohagi launched himself at his face. The cat yowled and hissed, latching onto Inuyasha's face with his claws and teeth. The feline darted around when he tried to grab onto him, it ducked around his shoulders before biting one of his ears and clawing at his head.

Kagome shivered at the sound of the door splintering apart. Coral-colored crystals blinded her view before her sister and mother-in-law rushed inside.

"Get Ohagi!" Kagome cried out, fearful that her cat could get injured.

Kikyou wrapped one arm around her shoulders as she led her out of the room. Shouto and Rei stood between her and Inuyasha. The woman encased his body almost completely in ice. Her eyes were cold as she plied the furious cat from the intruder's face.

Ohagi instantly settled when she held him.

"Are you okay?" Kikyou took her face between her palms, looking her and the boys over for any damage.

Kagome shivered as she tried to collect herself.

Was she okay? She couldn't even tell at this point.

"Kagome!" Touya's voice cut through the crowd. He forced his way upstairs and instantly made his way to her side.

Her husband enveloped her into his arms, pulling her completely against him. Kagome felt her legs give out and Touya crouched with her. Katsuo's piercing wails steadily calmed while Tatsuo gave a happy cry at seeing his father.

"I'm fine." Kagome breathed, "We're fine." She tried to reassure herself more than him.

Endeavor and Hawks made their way upstairs as well.

Kagome watched as Rei cast her estranged husband a cool glance.

"You're late." She sniped at him, gesturing towards the ice prison she'd used to capture Inuyasha. "At least do your job and take him down to the station."

Endeavor stared at Rei as if he couldn't recognize the woman looking back at him.

"Dad," Touya's voice broke through the man's reverie. "Do as she says. Same to you bird brain."

Hawks raised his hands in a placating manner, "Alright, no need to bite my head off." The man looked over her mother-in-law's handiwork and gave a low whistle. "Now that's some serious ice power."

Kagome sighed when Endeavor lifted Inuyasha and carried him out of the house. Touya still held her in his arms as they both struggled to calm down after the day's events.

"Mama," She called to Rei. "And Kikyou," She glanced at her sister. "Thank you."

Both women smiled at her.

Kikyou crouched next to her as she rubbed her palm against her back in a soothing manner.

"You know," Her sister started. "I think what I regretted most was not being a better sister to you." Kikyou's expression softened as she glanced at her boys, "I think out of everyone in our family, you were always the strongest. It was that strength that I envied and I became a terrible person because of that. I can't ask you to forgive me, but will you at least let me atone for it?"

Kagome leaned her head against her husband's shoulder.

"I'll think about it."

Right now, she just really wanted to get some sleep. Her body was too weak to stand and her mind was still racing a million miles a minute.

Rei crouched beside them as well, "Let's get you downstairs." She gave her son a look and Touya quickly swept her and their sons into his arms.

Kagome rested her head against his shoulder as she steadily fell asleep to the sound of his heart beating.

They were all safe.

That was the only thing that mattered.
