Chapter 2
New Horizons
2 Days Later
A C-5 Super Galaxy descends from the clouds, eventually landing with a small jolt.
"We're here, we're actually here." Cara thinks to herself. "When I signed up for deployments, I never thought I'd be here. I thought I'd mostly be doing evacuation medical assistance and 911 assistance in areas with hurricaines, not being a stand in for a UN field medic on a glorified standby."
Cara gathered her things and disembarked from the gigantic aircraft. Outside, 5 shiny ambulances are waiting on the tarmac. On the side of each ambulance, some text reads "UN Emergency Medical Services Ambulance"
Cara meekly remarks: "I wonder if those are for us." Nobody replied.
Cara walked with her coworkers and gathered with them just beside the ambulances. Everyone turned to look at Col. McKinzie as he spoke.
"Good evening everyone, I know it's been a very long day and, I promise that it will be over soon, but first I have to assign you all to your stations and ambulances. Each station will be assigned 2 EMTs, 2 Paramedics, and 2 RNs in addition to any staff working there already. EMTs Cara Murphy and Morgan Fisher, Paramedics John Gage and Roy DeSoto, and Nurses Dixie McCall, and Ron Swanson, You'll be on Ambulance 51 at Rescue Station 5, every piece of equipment you need has already been stocked, get in and head to your station. Same goes for the rest of you, when I announce your ambulance and station number, get going. "
Cara climbed in the patient compartment, sat on the bench seat and buckled in. The ride was long and awkward, sitting knee to knee with people that she hadn't really talked to before and only knew from the most minute of interactions at headquarters. Now, these people she barely knew were the only real connection to her life back in Illinois. Eventually, the ambulance pulls onto a waiting car train. Cara falls asleep, but awakens from a feverish nightmare just before arriving at the station. Cara steps out of the ambulance and onto the station floor.
"One hell of a compound" She remarks. The battalion chief walks over to the group of new arrivals and introduces himself. "I'm Chief Brenard from the NERV Medical and Fire Rescue branch of the Technical Division. I'm this station's battalion chief. You all must be the new EMS crews from the US. I have something rather important to tell you that couldn't be divulged to you before now. There's no object being tracked from space as of right now. We're actually working on some defensive projects and needed more EMS personnel. Station 5 is near the car train, so, we may need you to go up to the surface sometimes, but hopefully not. Mostly, your job is to run regular calls down here, but occasionally we may need you for something a little more advanced. "
Cara soon went to her bunk room and lay down. She soon fell asleep.
