Chapter One: 101 Dalmatians
"See if there are any spaces on the right."
"Nothing over here. How is it looking over there?"
"Nothing. Oh, wait. I think I see one." Tony backed the jag into the narrow spot at the end of the row and quickly squeezed out of the driver's seat, allowing Angela room to open her door wide.
"I'm sorry I took so long to get ready," she said, turning in the passenger's seat and setting both feet on the ground.
"That's alright. You look great," he said quietly, holding his hand out to help her up. He looked her up and down, appreciating the short emerald green dress she had chosen. The flared skirt had ridden up in the car, nearly causing him to blow through a red light. Now that they were face to face, he had a better view of the keyhole neckline.
"Thank you, Tony." She kept hold of his hand as they rushed toward the box office, mentally blaming the uneven pavement.
"Two adults for 101 Dalmatians," he told the attendant, finally dropping Angela's hand to pull out his wallet.
"The 8:45 show? Or the 10:35 show? It's 8:43 now."
"There are previews, right?" Angela asked. "We'll take the 8:45." Sam was babysitting, and she still didn't feel comfortable leaving Jonathan alone with her late at night.
The two took their tickets and walked into the lobby. "Let's get popcorn," Tony suggested.
"I wouldn't mind a Coke," Angela said. "I just need to use the restroom."
"Go ahead. Whoever gets done first can find a pair of seats in the theatre."
"Oh, no, Tony. Can we go in together? I left my glasses in the car, and I'd be lost in the dark."
"Sure, Angela. I'll meet you right outside the ladies' room."
Tony bought a large bucket of popcorn, a box of junior mints, and a large Coke he hoped to share. He would have gotten his own, but he didn't have enough hands to hold everything. When Angela spotted him in the hallway, she helpfully took the fountain drink.
The theatre was much more crowded than they expected, and previews were already running. Tony led the way, scanning the crowd for a pair of open seats. There were quite a few individual vacancies, but he didn't feel like asking an entire family to slide down. He also passed up the first two rows, knowing they would end up straining their necks. As they rounded the front of the audience, he saw an entire row of four open seats in the back corner. The one by the aisle had a sheet of white paper stuck to the back cushion, but he couldn't read it.
"Let's look back there," he whispered, pulling Angela by her free hand before kids could start throwing popcorn and insults at them. When they reached the back of the house, he read aloud "Do not use." The folding seat was off kilter and unmovable.
"I think it's just that chair, Tony, not the whole row."
"Yeah, I think you're right." He went ahead and tested the next two chairs, finding them perfectly functional, and sat down with the popcorn and candy. Angela sat with the large soda. They noticed that there were very few young kids in the audience. This side section, especially, seemed to be populated by couples of all ages.
The final preview was Three Men and a Baby, coming this Thanksgiving. "Maybe we can come back and see that one," Angela thought aloud. Although she could not see the screen clearly, the synopsis was simple. Funny, attractive men caring for an infant while some caper went on. She was reminded of Tony's time babysitting Clint.
The movie began, and the two ate their popcorn and shared their Coke. They could see all the couples in front of them doing the same thing. As Roger and Anita and Pongo and Perdita fell in love on screen, a number of heads were laid on neighboring shoulders. A few arms were stretched around companions, as well. Tony and Angela avoided looking at each other.
"Junior Mint?" Tony asked, setting the empty popcorn bucket on the ground.
"Oh yes," Angela responded, accepting the open box. She passed it back with only four candies remaining, and he poured them into his mouth before putting the box into the empty bucket. The soda was gone halfway through the film, and he plucked the empty cup from her hand, adding to the trash pile under his seat. When he sat upright again, he noticed her forearm on the armrest between them. Her palm was facing up, and he took the opportunity to hold her hand. This wasn't something they did, usually, but he had enjoyed the contact on the way in from the car and again during their search for seats.
Angela's heartrate sped up when Tony took her hand. She was trying not to be obvious in her invitation, and she was surprised it worked. She looked at him, surreptitiously. As much as she loved the movie, it wasn't holding her attention. Aside from the songs, it was just a lot of black and white blurs moving around the screen.
When the puppies rolled in soot, Tony was reminded of his attempt to clean Angela's chimney and how quick she was to forgive a fireable offense. Not only did she keep him on, she offered to pay for Sam's ski trip. He couldn't help but pick up Angela's hand and press a kiss to her knuckles.
The movement startled her, and she looked over to see him gazing at her so lovingly it took her breath away. She forgot the movie entirely and reached her other hand over to his cheek. As she leaned into him, she dropped her eyes to his lips in a silent wish.
Tony moved their joined hands back to the armrest and put his far hand on her knee. They kissed softly. "Was this on your list, Angela?"
"No, but maybe I should add to it. I just never wanted to make out at the movies until now."
"Movie's almost over, we better get to it," Tony said, releasing Angela's hand and putting his arm around her. The armrest kept them from getting too cozy, but they kissed all through Tony's favorite part of the movie, and he didn't mind one bit.
When the lights came up, the delirious couple linked hands and exited the building. Tony opened the passenger's door and helped Angela in, stealing another kiss. Luckily, the car next to them had left, allowing him to enter the driver's side normally. As they pulled onto the street, he placed a tentative hand on her knee. He even considered going back to Inspiration Point, but they really did need to get home.
They sat in the driveway after the key was turned to Off. Neither wanted to end the evening.
"Tony? Um, I had a really nice time tonight. Thank you for inviting me."
"Thanks for the company. It was good to have a friend next to me."
"Right. Always good to be with a friend." Angela took a deep breath with effort. Her chest was tight with anxiety. "I guess I'll find that list and add one final item. And then cross it off."
"Yeah, I guess that's all done, huh?" Tony hoped she couldn't hear the disappointment in his voice.
"Yeah. We better get inside." The spell was broken, and they went inside to check on their children. As they retreated to their separate bedrooms, neither one could stop thinking about what had just happened between them.
