Opposites - A Drabble by BananaCarrot-five

They were polar opposites. One was open and energetic. The other was closed off and cold. One had blonde hair, the other had black. One had silvery blue eyes, the other had dark brown. One was a Ravenclaw, the other a Slytherin.

One was Luna Lovegood, the other was Pansy Parkinson.

Two girls who were polar opposites, who soon called each other friends.

It was a calm day in October of 1993. It was a rare moment for Pansy to be alone. Draco was still in the hospital wing, and Pansy was off to explore the Forbidden Forest. She had just started to make her way into it when she heard leaves crunching from behind her.

Shocked, Pansy spun around and reached for her wand when she saw who it was. It was Loony. The pale blondie from Ravenclaw. She was a short girl with long blonde hair and silvery blue eyes. She didn't wear shoes, and she could definitely tell that she was staring.

"Hello, Pansy Parkinson," Loony had said.

"Um, hi." Pansy shifted between her feet, the calmness of the forest surrounded her. She was about to send some scathing insult her way when said calmness slammed into her.

It was unreal, it was intoxicating. It was like a foreign force was trying to sneak into the calmness of her life. But still, standing in front of her, was Loo-Luna Lovegood.

"You seem to have a lot on your mind," Luna stated.

God, she was observant.

"I do," Pansy replied carefully.

Luna either didn't pick up on her tone or ignored it.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

Merlin, she was pushy.

"No, Lovegood. I do not. Leave me alone." Pansy turned to walk away but stayed in place.

Her brain yelled at her to stay, and for some weird reason, she did. It was something foolish, perhaps, or maybe it was that squashed longing to make a friend other than the cold Daphne Greengrass or the fake friendships of the boys in her House.

"You look remarkably still for someone who is supposed to be walking away from me." Luna's soothing voice reached her ears and she turned, her cheeks slightly red.

"Sorry, I just- I- um-" She struggled to find the words to express what she was saying.

"Doyouwanttobefriends?"

Great. Just great. What would Draco say when he learns about this? She mulled over the thought for a second and realized that she didn't care.

Luna smiled and her face lit up. "You want to be my friend? I don't have any friends yet. We'll be best friends!"

Pansy opened her mouth to take back everything she had said. Stupid brain, stupid voice, stupid, stupid, stupid! Then she saw how much happier Luna looked, how much she hoped to look, and melted into that energy.

Despite her yelling at herself not to, Pansy smiled. And when she did, in the moment, all those doubts and insecurities left her.

"Sure. I'd like that." Pansy responded after a moment.

Luna giggled and smiled before bouncing over and hugging Pansy.

"We're going to be best friends!"

Pansy couldn't stop her smile now. She hugged Luna back and the duo basked in their new friendship. If anyone were to see them, they'd think that she was being polyjuiced. There was no way at all that Pansy Parkinson of all girls would be giggling, smiling and making friends.

Instead, they would all be wrong. Daphne Greengrass, Draco, everyone in the school. She had a real friend, even if she was a bit crazy, but she was still a friend, and Pansy wasn't going to let that go for anything.
