Republic City
Republic City was usually a quiet city, apart from the occasional petty crimes here and there...nothing too major...the only real crime threat in the city was the growing Mob boss activity.
Not in a certain young Boruto Uzumaki's mind anyways, those Mobs were target practice in his eyes.
The 12 year old shinobi in training sat on a roof as he drank a slushie angrily.
"Why do dad and big sis have to be so strict about this Shinobi stuff all the time? So uncool..." Boruto said to himself as he sighed begrudgingly.
He was the son of Toph Uzumaki...a woman who left when he was only 3...and his father, Naruto Uzumaki, was the other half of the last two Shinobi on the planet including himself.
Naruto was considered the most powerful being in the universe by most which increased the pressure that was put on Boruto even as young as he was...it was his duty to restore the Shinobi world...blah blah blah.
"Why don't you pick on someone who can fight back then?" Boruto immediately trained his eyes on where the voice came from.
He quickly noticed it was a mocha skinned girl clad in Water Tribe clothing fighting with the Triple Threat Triad.
Ofcourse...Lightning Bolt Zolt, Viper and Tokuga were always causing trouble.
Boruto finished his slushie as he stood up...it was time to step in.
However he's forced to stop in his tracks as he notices the girl deflecting Zolt's...fire? How did she do that as a Waterbender? Unless...
The young Uzumaki had no time to ponder this as he heard Bolt scream out and get sent flying through a store wall.
The girl then smirks at her work, but she failed to realize Viper, the Earthbender of the group sneaking up behind her.
"Well, that's my cue." Boruto said as he leaped forward.
"You shouldn't turn your back in a fight girlie." Viper said to the girl as her eyes widened and she turned to him.
He was already poised to attack, and this was sure to hurt.
"Rasengan!" They both heard a voice shout as an invisible force collided with the man's chest and sent him flying through another store.
"Woah..." The girl trailed off as she noticed Boruto land in front of her.
"That was awesome! You gotta show me how to do that!" She shouted as she ran up to him, her blue eyes beaming at his.
Boruto arched a brow at her, did she not know who he was? His father and himself were the only one who could use chakra based attacks.
"I'm Korra by the-" The now dubbed Korra is cutoff.
"Hey, this fight still ain't over." Both teens turn to the voice of Tokuga who stood ready to fight.
"Come on Tokie, my sister made you guys promise to be good, you sure you wanna do this?" Boruto said as he crossed his arms.
"Tch, smug Uzumaki brat, I'll make both of you pay!" Tokuga shouted as he charged them.
"I don't think so!" Korra shouted as she bent a earth spike which collided with the man's chest causing him to grunt in pain.
Boruto then did the seal for his favorite jutsu, the Shadow clone jutsu.
Two clones of himself appear as they began rotating a whirlwind of chakra into his palm.
Korra's eyes widened in shock at the clones and the raw energy radiating from Boruto's palm.
Boruto then shot foward as he ran up the earth spike Korra had made and leaped off towards Tokuga.
Tokuga looked up with wide eyes as Boruto came down towards him.
"Rasengan!" He shouted as he drove the blue orb of energy right into Tokuga's core, completely ripping the ground below the man as he flew into a wall and fell unconscious.
"Well that was easy." Boruto said, but what he didn't expect was to be suddenly smothered.
"Woah!" He exclaimed as he was assaulted by licks and nuzzles from a large Polar Bear dog.
"What the hell man? Stop that tickles..." He said in between laughter.
"Naga, let him up." Korra said as the Polar Bear dog whined slightly and got off of Boruto.
"You okay?" She then questioned the young ninja in training as she helped him up.
"Yea I'm good, minus the doggy drool." Boruto said as he wiped his face.
"Yea sorry about that...um, I...I'm Avatar Korra by the way." Korra said sheepishly as Boruto once again arched a brow at her.
"Um, I know." He stated plainly as she craned her neck at him.
"How would you..." She trailed off.
"Well it's not everyday you see a Water tribe member firebending and earthbending." Boruto said as Korra realized her mistake...he had seen her bending multiple elements.
"Oh...right, what about you? You know you look a lot like-" Boruto cuts her off.
"Naruto Uzumaki? Yea, that's...uh, my dad." Boruto said as it was his turn to become sheepish.
"I knew it! You guys have the same hair, you even have his whisker thingies!" Korra said as she nudged the two whiskers on Boruto's face, much to the latter's dismay.
"Your eyes might be a little more blue though." She added as she seemingly examined his blue eyes with her own.
"You gotta show me how you do that Shinobi stuff." Korra finished as Boruto backed up slightly.
"Well..." He trailed off before they heard police sirens whaling.
They look up to notice a police airship floating above them, Naga howling at the sirens.
"Uh oh." Boruto stated cryptically, his sister was going to kill him.
The Metalbending officers then began descending from the ship as they quickly arrested the Triple Threat Triad members.
"Cool, Metalbenders." Korra said in awe.
'This is not gonna be cool in a few seconds.' Boruto mentally stated.
"Boruto Uzumaki? What would your sister say if she knew you were out destroying the city with this hooligan!" Boruto heard an officer shout towards him.
'Crap...this isn't going to end well.' Boruto sighed.
"Destroying the city? Hooligan? We caught the bad guys!" Korra shouted as the officer approached both of them.
Boruto almost facepalmed, the Avatar was about to get them in even more trouble.
"You two are coming with us too." The officer stated firmly as both teens' blue eyes widened in shock.
"What do you mean? We didn't do anything!" Korra shouted.
"Korra I think we should just-" Boruto is cutoff as the officer shot a metal line at Korra, which she dodged.
'Andddd add resisting arrest to the list of things my sister is going to kill me for today.' Boruto mentally stated once more.
Korra then mounted Naga as the Polar Bear dog ran away from the officers and even flattened a few.
Boruto sighed as he ran and leaped onto Naga, he couldn't just leave Korra now, he made a commitment.
"Um Korra, there's something I should tell y-woah!" Boruto exclaims as he took out his kunai knife and was forced to parry a Metalbending officer who tried to attack him with metal blades.
As Naga continued running through the city the officers were still hot on their trails.
"Don't worry Boruto, they're not gonna catch us!" Korra shouted.
"That's the least of my worries right now, trust me." Boruto stated firmly.
Suddenly the officers had seemingly been led off their trail...
"You see, I told yo-" Korra is cutoff as metal lines swiftly wrap around Naga and began lifting them into the air.
They look up to notice the police airship...talk about speaking too soon.
"No!" Korra shouted as they then tied both herself and Boruto as well.
They were now flying towards headquarters, both bound under a airship.
'It would be so easy to just use a substitution jutsu and get outta here right now...' Boruto mentally stated.
He knew he couldn't though, leaving Korra behind now would just be wrong, and his sister would definitely kill him if he bailed now.
"Well, today was fun atleast." He said as he smiled at Korra who did not return it, what was fun about being arrested?
Little did she know, Boruto didn't get a chance to live this much...well...ever.
Headquarters
After traversing through the city Korra now found herself sitting in ab interrogation room.
"Let's see..." Began the voice of the woman standing before her clad in a lieutenant's uniform.
This was Lin Uzumaki, first born daughter of Naruto and Toph Uzumaki.
"Three counts of destruction of private and city property, not to mention evading arrest and involving my little brother with your mess." Lin started as Korra arched a brow.
'Little brother...? This can't be Boruto's...' Korra's thoughts trailed off as she noticed a picture frame in the office with Lin and a younger Boruto in it...her nameplate even said Uzumaki...oh no, what did she do?
"You're in a heap of trouble young lady!" Lin shouted.
"But there was some thugs threatening a helpless shopkeeper and we-" Korra is cutoff.
"Can it! You should've called the police and stayed out of the way." Lin shot her down.
"But I couldn't just sit back and do nothing...it's my duty to help people! See...I'm the Avatar..." Korra trailed off as Lin crossed her arms.
"Oh, I am well aware of who you are, and your Avatar title, might impress some people, but not me, my father has a giant fox sealed inside of him and can level mountains with a blink of his eye, whoopty doo." Lin said with a tired roll of her eyes.
Korra panicked, the Avatar card usually worked, she had one last resort...playing dumb.
"So you're the daughter of Naruto and Toph Uzumaki?" Korra questioned.
"What of it?" Lin questioned back.
"Well then why are you treating me like a criminal, Avatar Aang and your parents were good friends, in fact, he was your father's BEST friend, they saved the world together." Korra explained to Lin who's face remained stoic.
"That's ancient history, and its got diddly squat to do with the mess you're in right now, you can't just waltz in here doling out vigilante justice!" She shouted.
"Chief, councilman Tenzin and your brother are here." An officer announced from behind the door.
"Let them in." Lin said with a sigh as both beings walked in.
Korra instantly lit up at the sight of Tenzin, the bald airbender would be her ticket to freedom.
"So...you know, huh?" Boruto questioned Lin who stared at him...hard.
"Save it, we'll talk later." Lin said firmly.
Tenzin who had walked up to Korra let out a heavy sigh.
"Lin...you are looking radient as usual." Tenzin attempted to flatter the Uzumaki.
Boruto and Korra both facepalmed, was this really his plan?
"Cut the garbage Tenzin, why is the Avatar in Republic City? I thought you were supposed to be moving down to the South Pole to train her." Lin reminded him.
"My relocation has been delayed, the Avatar on the other hand, will be heading back to the South Pole immediately." Tenzin informed the Chief as Boruto and Korra shared a wary look, this wasn't right.
"But-" Tenzin cuts Korra off.
"If you would be so kind as to drop the charges against Korra I will cover all the damages." Tenzin informed Lin who glared at Korra.
"Fine...get her out of my city." She said begrudgingly as Korra stood to follow Tenzin.
Lin then swiftly walked over to Boruto and twisted his ear eliciting a yelp of pain from her brother.
"Take this little idiot with you too and make sure he gets home...I'll decide on his punishment later." Lin said as she let his ear go which he rubbed.
"Very well, come along you two." Tenzin said as they all left Lin's office.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you my big sister was the Chief...I thought our family was pretty well known by now." Boruto said to Korra as they walked to the waiting room.
"It's okay, I'm sorry about getting you in trouble too." Korra apologized.
"Are you kidding? That was the most fun I've ever had in my life, I'm not complaining at all!" Boruto exclaimed as they stopped in the waiting room.
After a point Korra frowned...she did not want to go back to the South Pole.
"Tenzin, please don't send me back to the South Pole..." She pleaded.
"You blatantly disobeyed my wishes and the orders of the White Lotus." Tenzin reminded her irately.
"Katara agreed with me that I should come, she said my destiny is inside Republic City." Korra informed him as the man's face turned a crimson red.
"Don't bring my mother into this!" He shouted.
"Mama's boy..." Boruto whispered.
"I heard that!" Tenzin shouted.
"Look, I can't wait any longer to finish my training, being cooped up and hidden away from the world isn't making me a better Avatar…" Korra continued pleading her case to Tenzin as Boruto sighed at that…he knew the feeling.
Being restricted and subjected to a boring, dreary life wouldn't help him become stronger…and it made him just as restless as the Avatar evidently was.
"I saw a lot of the city today…and it is totally out of whack, I understand why you need to stay here, Republic City does need you Tenzin, but it needs me too." Korra finished her point as Tenzin sighed.
He tried to find something to say to Korra but he kept stammering…she made a valid case.
Before the conversation could continue all three of them turned to a loud panting noise.
"Is this your Polar Bear dog, miss?" An officer questioned Korra as he presented an hyperactive Naga to them.
"Better him than me." Boruto said with a chuckle as they watched Naga cover the man in slobber.
Korra let out a small smile at his quip, despite Tenzin being unreasonable in her mind, she was glad to have met this…Boruto Uzumaki, the way they met was very odd but she had decided that she liked the kid, he had a pure heart.
Later
Surely enough, despite her case being pled, Korra stood before three White Lotus members as they were prepared to take her back to the barren prison that was the Southern Water Tribe compound.
She looked back solemnly as Tenzin gave her the same look almost…her words were conflicting to him.
'The city needs me too…' Her voice rang in his head.
Boruto stood with his back facing them, he was too busy being immersed in the two statues that overlooked Republic City.
It was the late great Avatar Aang standing besides his father…Naruto Uzumaki, the Sage of Six Paths…and the biggest shadow that casted over him.
Boruto's blond hair flowed in the subtle cool air that radiated off of the water…Korra leaving reminded him of how dreadful his life was too…
'The future of Shinobi…' He mentally stated as he clenched his fist at that title…so troublesome it was...
Suddenly three swoops drew his attention as he snapped towards it, immediately recognizing three familiar faces.
Jinora the eldest daughter, Ikki the younger daughter and middle child and Meelo the youngest and only son, these were Tenzin's children…some of the few remaining airbenders in the world.
"Korra! Boruto!" They all shouted simultaneously as they landed and the blond shinobi in training walked up beside Korra, a smile plastered on both of their faces.
Before Korra could even greet the trio, Ikki and Meelo attacked her with a hug, which she immediately returned.
Boruto chuckled slightly as he took note of Korra's temporary shock at the swift hug.
"Hey Boruto." The blond almost jumped as he failed to notice Jinora had made her way over to him…talk about a diligent ninja…
"Oh, uh hey Nora." Boruto greeted her with the nickname he'd been calling her since they were 5.
His whiskered cheeks had a small red tinge on them, mainly due to the fact that she had snuck up on him so easily…but the other reason was one he would deny to no end…
"Are you coming to live with us on the island?" Ikki questioned Korra as she, along with Meelo, still enveloped the Avatar in an embrace.
Jinora listened in on the conversation as she was eager to hear Korra's answer.
Korra almost felt like an anvil was dropped onto her heart…she didn't want to take the spirit out of the young airbenders, but she had to go.
"No Ikki…I have to go home now." Korra relayed as they all deflated and wore sullen expressions now…
Korra sighed before standing up and facing Boruto…the first face that genuinely helped her in Republic City…no matter how short her stint in the city was.
"Thank you for helping me today Boruto…again, I can't say how much I'm sorry for what happened with your sister today." Korra apologized once more as Boruto shook his head with a smirk.
"I told you it's okay Korra…you just make sure you stay safe Ms. Avatar." Boruto said as he threw his hands behind his head.
Despite the whirlwind of emotions Korra was feeling right now, she let out a small chuckle at Boruto's banter…she knew there was a reason she liked this kid.
"I'll try my best…you stay out of trouble too Mr. Future of Shinobi." Korra said as she mounted Naga with a smirk.
Then that's when the sadness came back, she glanced down at the airbending children…their faces were still solemn…
She then looked at Tenzin, who's expression was one of someone who was in deep conflict and thought.
Korra sighed once more before finally turning Naga around and beginning to huskily move towards the entrance of the boat.
Tenzin sighed as Korra got further away…his brows furrowed to no end…he had been thinking about everything so much that it was stirring his brain…he could not believe what he was about to do.
"Wait." Tenzin finally spoke aloud as Boruto and his own children snapped their heads towards him…Korra and Naga stopped in their tracks.
"I…" Tenzin began as he walked up to the Avatar.
"Have tried my best to maintain this city in the image my father and Naruto Uzumaki had for it but…you are right, without them, the city has fallen out of balance…" The Monk trailed off as he looked down.
"I thought I should withhold your training in order to uphold his legacy, but YOU are his legacy…you may stay and train airbending here with me." Tenzin finally finished as everyone else did a complete 180.
Korra was left dumbfounded…she never thought she would be able to get Tenzin to crack and change his mind…he was actually going to let her stay.
Boruto and Jinora both let out smiles at the scene before them, seeing Korra and Tenzin share that moment was awesome.
Ikki and Meelo bounced around in excitement, they were so elated to get to spend more time with Korra now.
"Republic City needs its Avatar again." Tenzin stated as Korra continued to beam.
"Yes! Thank you! You're the best!" Korra exclaimed as she fist pumped, she could still hardly believe this.
"Yayyy!" Ikki and Meelo beamed as they continued leaping around in excitement.
Boruto was about to say something but when he found himself swooped up into a large group hug he was utterly confused…how was Korra holding all five of them up like this?
"This is nice…" Jinora trailed off as her face squeezed against Korra's.
Ikki and Meelo were still happily content in the tight group hug.
"Lungs…can't…breathe…" Boruto wheezed out…this only caused Korra to tighten the hug, even Naga joined the embrace.
The Avatar was now officially a permanent resident in Republic City…the story had begun.
Morning, the Next Day
"Hello…I'm Korra, your new Avatar." Boruto sat atop the head of his father's statue as he chuckled at Korra.
There she was, giving a speech in the middle of the city…just yesterday she had snuck onto the island…now here she was announcing herself as the new Avatar.
"They're gonna eat her alive." The young blond said with a sweatdrop as he could visibly see Korra begin getting frantic at all the rapid fire questions she was receiving.
"I never liked the idea of these statues ya know." Boruto almost jumped at that voice…he knew it all too well.
The young blonde turned as his eyes almost popped out of his skull as he took note of the man that shared almost all features with him…Naruto Uzumaki, his father.
"D-Dad?" Boruto questioned Naruto as the hardly aged old blond stepped forward to stand besides Boruto who was still shook that his father was even here right now…the man was always off on some mission.
"So that's the new Avatar huh…" Naruto trailed off as he could sense Rava's spirit radiating from Korra…he could sense Aang and all the other Avatars before him…only Kami knew how much Naruto missed his best friend…seeing Korra now made him proud.
"How's your sister?" Naruto questioned Boruto, alluding to Lin obviously.
"Oh uh…ya know, she's just being…Lin, these days." Boruto said awkwardly.
"You got in trouble didn't you." Naruto deducted with a deadpan as Boruto sighed.
"Yea dad… " He trailed off.
"What was your punishment?" Naruto questioned his son.
"She grounded me for eternity and made me hold up 17 stone slabs for 12 hours." Boruto admitted as Naruto's eyes widened slightly.
"That's it?" Naruto questioned Boruto as the latter arched a brow at him.
"I'm kidding, loosen up kid." Naruto said he stood with his hands by his side.
Boruto sighed…he was happy to see his father but…everytime he saw the man he was left with an unanswered question.
"Hey dad…if you and Avatar Aang founded Republic City together and vowed to protect it…how come you're never around that much to keep the city safe?" Boruto questioned his father as the latter sighed at that question.
"Aang was the one who agreed to protect the city…the missions I always leave for have the faith of the entire bending world depending on them son…one day you will understand." Naruto said as Boruto sighed…that was always the answer…
"Besides, why would Republic City need me when they have Boruto Uzumaki and the great Avatar Korra to protect them, huh?" Naruto said as he ruffled his son's hair up, the latter's eyes widened…protectingRepublic City seemed like a big responsibility.
"I got a good feeling that a new Team Avatar is about to take Republic City by storm…" Naruto said as he shared a smile with his son.
"Why would you guys need…me…" Naruto's voice began fading out as Boruto noticed it.
His father was gone in an instant…every time, this was a recurring thing for Boruto for quite some time now…as soon as Naruto Uzumaki showed up in Republic City, he was ready to leave again.
Somehow, Naruto's words had touched his son…he didn't know what it was, but maybe Korra showing up in the city was a wake up call for him…the future of Shinobi and the Avatar were now destined to steer Republic City away from incoming danger…
Little did they know…their job would soon become one that expanded all over the bending nations…they'd have to take on the role their predecessors, Avatar Aang and Naruto Uzumaki once held.
