Chapter 6: The Sleepover
Agent BM: Yes they do.
That Saturday, Zeke took Sophie to Kevin and Lucy's house for the sleepover.
"You'll remember to have good manners and be on your best behavior." Zeke told her.
"I will, Dad." Sophie replied.
Zack babbled at her.
"I'll miss you too, Zack." she said, tickling his cheeks.
When they pulled up to the house, they all got out of the car, went up to the door, and Sophie rang the doorbell. After a minute, the door opened and Rancis Fluggerbutter was there.
"Hello, you must be Sophie." he told her.
"And you must be Kevin and Lucy's dad." Sophie said.
He invited her in, and Zeke said goodbye.
"Kids, Sophie's here." Rancis called.
The twins hurried to the foyer, and greeted Sophie. Lucy then took Sophie to her room.
"You have a nice room, Lucy." Sophie observed.
"Thanks, you'll be sleeping in here when it's bedtime." Lucy replied.
After putting her bags on the floor next to Lucy's bed, the two went to join Kevin.
The sleepover was really fun. They ordered pizza, drank soda, played video games, watched TV, had a pillow fight, and ate all kinds of goodies.
"This is so much fun." said Sophie.
"Glad you're having a good time, Soph." Kevin told her.
Just then, Vanellope walked into the room.
"You kids having fun?" she asked.
"You bet, Mom." answered Lucy.
"Yes, Mrs. Fluggerbutter." Sophie added.
"Well remember before you get into your pajamas, take a shower."
"Okay." the twins replied.
When they finished watching their show, they decided to get into their jammies. Kevin went to his bathroom, and Sophie and Lucy went to Lucy's bathroom.
Sophie looked around the room as Lucy took her shower, and noticed Lucy liked pink, and my little ponies. She looked at a few pictures on her nightstand and looked at one of a younger Lucy with her family, standing in front of the castle she recognized as from the opening of all those Disney movies.
Kevin and Lucy looked really happy, and the family all wore buttons she couldn't really make out, but noticed Lucy wearing a hat. She didn't seem to have hair underneath, maybe she got lice and had to shave it off she presumed.
Sophie continued looking around, she noticed Lucy had different toys and nice clothes in her closet. The oddest thing standing out she noticed was on Lucy's dresser, a grey military looking hat with symbols on the front she couldn't recognize, with a tag reading Star Wars Galaxy's Edge underneath.
It was resting on top of an Elsa dress from frozen and a plastic light saber toy.
"Guess Lucy likes Star Wars and Frozen. Learning a lot about her all of a sudden." Sophie said to herself.
Sophie noticed Lucy's heart necklace and bracelet sitting near the hat and dress, couldn't hurt to look at them she figured. She picked them up, both having a little weight. The hearts read return to Tiffany and Co New York, and had Lucy's name engraved on the back.
"These sure look nice, probably why Lucy cherishes these."
Suddenly, Lucy popped in wearing a white and purple bathrobe with her pajamas and snatched her jewelry back.
"Don't touch these, don't ever touch these!" she angrily told her.
"Lucy, I'm sorry, I wasn't gonna do anything to them."
Lucy calmed down and put her jewelry back on under her robe.
"Sorry, it's just that these are special. They got me through a terrible time in my life."
"Terrible?"
Lucy went to the picture of her in front of the castle and picked it up.
"This photo is from that time, I was 5-years-old."
"I saw it, you look so happy. Was it your hair? I just assumed you got lice."
"I did lose my hair but not to lice."
"This photo is from my make a wish vacation to Disney world. Was the best vacation of my life, Disney, swimming pools, all the ice cream I could ever eat. I wanna go back and ride that new tron ride but that's besides the point."
"You got a wish from them? What happened to you?"
"Well Sophie, this may come as a surprise, but I know what it's like being away from my family in a hospital like your Mom is. I don't look like one now, but I'm a cancer survivor."
Sophie was shocked to hear that.
"You had cancer?" Sophie asked.
"Yep. Happened not long after my 5th birthday. I started getting really sick and weak, was told it was cancer. The doctors did many things to me, and I spent long stretches in the hospital. I lost all my beautiful hair. Despite what they did I just got worse and worse, I overheard the doctors tell my parents I only had a short time to live. I was even given one of those make a wish wishes, I wished to go to Disney world with my family, that was fun, rode this cool Star Wars ride Kevin and I wanted to do and saw my favorite princess. My mom even gave up her racing job to be with me." explained Lucy.
"She did?"
"My mom stopped racing to be with me in the hospital and keep me company. Her sponsors hated that she wasn't racing and dropped her, but she told me I was more important than her career. This necklace I wear, it was a gift from my parents before I was supposed to die. I saw it on old movies and I said I wanted one, and my parents got me it as sort of a last gift to make me happy. That and this matching bracelet I wear too."
"So that's why you're so protective of them."
"Yep. They're reminders of my struggle."
"Well you're okay now, right? I mean you're still here."
"Yes. By some miracle the treatments started working, and the cancer went away and I got better. I wear and love this necklace to remember the struggle I went through, not because it's some expensive thing I own. Kind of like how you wear those pearls to remember your mom."
"You're a brave little girl, Lucy. Can't imagine how tough that experience was for you." said Sophie.
Lucy opened her bedside drawer and pulled out her own set of pearls.
"Kevin thought I shouldn't wear my pearls around everywhere like you do, said they'd make me some kind of spoiled rich girl in front of others."
"If you wanna wear them I won't judge you. After what you went through, well you shouldn't be afraid of what you wear."
"You know what, you're right. I'm gonna wear my pearls more often, starting now."
Lucy put her own pearls around her neck.
"So that's why I know how you and your mom feel."
"I see. Well I guess I should take my shower now." And with that, Sophie grabbed her pajamas, and went into the bathroom.
The sleepover continued and the kids still had fun. When it came time to go to bed, Kevin went to his room and Lucy and Sophie went to Lucy's. As Sophie lied in her sleeping bag, she thought about Lucy and her mom.
If Lucy could survive cancer, then surely her mom would get better.
