Later on that night, Chance and Vivian went out on a date together. She was nervous after what her father did to Chance earlier in the day. She insisted they just stay in tonight, but he was determined to get out of the garage apartment with her and try to forget the stress of the day. "We only have 9 months until we're a party of 3 instead of 2. We gotta get some fun in before we're on parental lockdown for a long time." Chance had said, trying to convince her to go. She was glad he had won this battle, for once. They walked along the pier at Megakat City beach, hand in hand after a very filling dinner. She was wearing a light material black sundress with a jean jacket over that and sandals. Chance was in a nice pair of jeans and a short sleeve button down. "That place was so good, Chance! I might not eat for the next three days, I'm so full!" She said, rubbing her stomach as he chuckled slightly. "I'm glad you enjoyed it. I know all the great little secret hole in the wall places in Megakat City. I'm just happy I have you to share them with now."
"So am I." She smiled as she let go of his hand and walked over to the side of the pier to watch the sunset. He came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist and placed his chin in the crook of her neck. His hand slipped to the slight curve of her distended stomach. She felt that familiar tingle as his hand settled there. She put her hand on top of his.
"Are you still gonna be attracted to me when I'm all round and fat the further along I get?" She asked as he shook his head, giving her a slightly weird look. "You won't be fat. You're our kit's home until they're born. If anything, I'm more attracted to you now than I was before." She rolled her eyes. "Must be the pregnancy hormones affecting you." He chuckled slightly. "It's more than that, Kitten. You're beautiful, no matter what" Vivian blushed.
"Let's go to the theater before we miss our movie." She said, moving away from the railing and he followed. "You didn't pick some sappy chick flick, did you? I mean, if you did, it's okay..." She giggled, having bought the tickets this time. "You'll just have to wait and see." Chance shook his head as he took her hand in his again. 'That means she did. Oh boy. Get ready to be bored for two hours, Furlong.' He thought begrudgingly to himself.
To his surprise, she had bought tickets for a romantic movie, but it was an action one. The story was about a fighter pilot tom and a preacher's daughter. The preacher didn't approve of their relationship, yet they did everything to be together, nearly dying to be together. Chance actually ended up enjoying it, even the mushy parts. They walked out together hand in hand. "So, did you enjoy it?" She asked, having a little knowing smile on her face. Chance looked over at her. "Actually, yeah. The fighter jet parts were radical. Pretty accurate too. The mushy stuff I could've done without, but the rest of it was good." She laughed, bringing his face closer to hers. "But Chance, you do a lot of that mushy stuff on a regular basis now." She said as he smirked.
"Nah, notthatmushy." He said, gently pressing his nose against hers. "No, youarethat mushy." She replied back as he chuckled. "You must be thinking of some other tom. That ain't me." He said, wrapping his arms around her waist. She giggled. "Alright, I'll let you believe whatever you want to." She said, leaning up and closing the gap between them. Chance brought her closer as they kissed. She felt that sudden sharp pain again. She had a pained look on her face as she pulled away from Chance. "What's wrong, Kitten?" He said, noticing her pained look.
"Uh...it's nothing." She said as he looked at her with concern. He gently put his finger under her chin and made her look at him. "You're calling your doc in the morning. You've had that pain going on for a while. I don't think it's normal." Chance said as she considered him for a moment. "Yeah. I'm starting to get worried. This is happening way too often. It might be something, it might be nothing."
"Well, let's not worry about it until the morning. Come on, let's go back to your place." He said as he led her to the car and they left for her apartment.
Later on in the night after they had gone to bed, Vivian woke up, feeling the need to use the bathroom. "Come on little guy or girl, give me a break. I'm trying to sleep." She grumbled to herself as she trudged on to her bathroom. She looked over at Chance in the dark, who was still peacefully asleep. 'Lucky.' She thought to herself as she closed the door.
After she had finished going to the bathroom, something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye. She gasped as she looked down. Her toilet was full of a bright crimson color. 'Oh my gods! What is happening to me?! Is our kitten okay?!' She thought as she also felt intense cramps, worse than when she was ever in heat. She instantly called out for Chance as she leaned over in pain. She called for him again after a few minutes. The door suddenly opened with the very tired tabby in the doorway. "What's wrong, Viv?" He said as he looked over, noticing the toilet and her doubled over. His eyes went wide as he looked at her. "Take me to the hospital, please. Something's wrong." She said, trying to hide the panic in her voice. Chance nodded, going back to the bedroom and finding his clothes in the dark and flipping on the bedroom light. He wrapped his arm around her, moving her slowly out of the bathroom. "Come on, let's get you dressed, and then we'll go." She nodded as he led her to her closet.
A while later, Vivian and Chance arrived at the hospital in the emergency section. The staff whisked her away and worked quickly, pushing Chance out and pulling the curtain in the room and shutting the door so they could work. Chance's ears fell back in concern as he took a seat across from her room. The worried look on his face wouldn't go away. It was about 30 minutes later when Chance decided to use the hospital phone to call Jake. Of course he wouldn't be up right now, so he left a message.
"Hey, buddy, it's Chance. I uh...I'm at Megakat City General with Viv. She uhm...started bleeding pretty bad and they're checking her over. I'm...ah...crud...I...I dunno if I'm gonna come home today or not or what's gonna happen...I just...thought I'd let you...somebody know. Talk to you later." He hung up the phone, just now noticing his hand was shaking. He was actually scared for both Vivian and his unborn kit. 'What if it's killing her or something? Then we'd have to choose her life over them. Crud...I hope that's not what's it. I don't want to loose either one of them.' Chance thought to himself as he sat back down on the chair in front of her room. The door was still closed. Chance started doing something he hadn't in a long time. He started praying to the Kat gods, praying the love of his life and his kitten would be okay.
Another agonizing hour and a half later, a doctor came out, closing the door behind him. Chance thought he heard crying before he closed the door. "You're the husband, I presume?" The Doctor asked as Chance stood. "Boyfriend. How is she, Doc? Is everything okay?" The Doctor had no emotion on his face as he put a hand on Chance's shoulder. He felt his blood run cold as he did so. A few moments later, Chance opened the door to Vivian's room. She was sitting up in bed. Her face fur matted from tears. She instantly reached for him and he came to her side. She threw herself into his arms as much as she could while sitting on the bed and she cried hard pained sobs.
"We lost them Ch-Chance, we lost our k-kitten..." She managed between sobs. Chance held her tightly as she gripped his shirt and cried heavily into his chest. He placed his chin on top of her head. "I know, Viv. The doc told me. I'm so sorry, sweetheart. It'll be okay." He said softly to her and she shook her head. "No...no it won't. The doctor said I did nothing wrong...nothing I could've done to avoid it...it...just ha-happened..." He gently shushed her as he held her close while she clung to him and continued to cry. He could feel her body shaking slightly from her crying. Chance's heart was breaking while he listened to Vivian cry at the sudden loss of their kitten.
This was hurting Chance way more than when Feral told Jake and himself that their Enforcer careers were over. That was a cakewalk compared to seeing, feeling, and hearing this. One of the few times in his nine lives, Chance wanted to cry right along with her, but he knew he had to be her rock right now. Despite his initial reaction, he was getting used to the idea of being a father and raising a kit together with Vivian. Now, that opportunity was suddenly gone and there was nothing he could do about it. Nothing he could say or do to make things better or console his broken hearted girlfriend, and it was slowly killing him inside. He leaned down and kissed her forehead, putting his cheek back on the top of her head.
"We still have each other, Vivian. I'm not going anywhere. I love you." He felt her nod slightly and buried herself deeper into him. "Tha-thank you...I love you too." She managed to get out. His ear flicked to the door when he heard the soft click of it opening and he turned to see Jake and Callie opening the door. Callie was the first to notice Vivian's slightly red eyes and her matted face fur. Her ears fell back in concern and she came closer.
"Hey guys, seems like we're coming here too often. What's going on?" Callie asked and of course, that got the waterworks going on again for Vivian. Chance stepped back as Callie came to embrace her. "We-we lost...our kit-kitten..." Vivian replied as she started crying again, but not near as hard as she did with Chance. "Oh no, sweetie, I'm so sorry." She continued to hug Vivian as she reached over and rubbed Chance's arm comfortingly as he looked up at her. The pain was evident in his blue eyes. Callie saw he was trying to remain strong for Vivian, but he needed to express how he was feeling too. "Jake, honey, can you please take Chance out into the hallway for a while? I wanna talk to Vivian." Jake nodded as Chance turned to Vivian. Callie stepped back a little. He leaned over the bed and gently kissed her on the cheek. "I'll just be outside, love. I'll be back, promise." She nodded as he walked out of the room, following Jake. He closed the door behind him and they walked further away from the room, so she wouldn't hear what was about to happen.
"How are you holding up, buddy?" That one simple question, that one sentence from his best friend, was all it took to break the usually strong and unbreakable tabby down. Chance was racked with sobs as he fell against the hospital hallway wall and down to sit on the floor, finally letting go and letting the pain overtake him. Jake followed him, wrapping his arms around his uncharacteristically truly heartbroken best friend and partner.
Jake heard sobbing sounds he wasn't used to hearing rip through him. "What did I do Jake? What did I do...s-so wrong for this to ha-happen?" Chance asked, not really expecting an answer. He had his head buried against his arms that were folded up on his knees. Jake shook his head. "You did nothing wrong, pal. It...just wasn't time for you guys, yet." Chance shook his head. "I didn't at first, but I...I wanted that ki-kit, Jake. They-they were ours. I had-had so many pl-plans..." Jake hugged him slightly. "I know, Chance. You'll make a radical dad someday, just not right now. Look on the bright side, at least this gives you and Vivian more time to get to know each other and you guys are both still young. You can try again later." Chance considered for a moment, and then nodded. He wiped his tears off on his shirt sleeve. Jake waited a while for Chance to calm down as he sat on the hospital floor with him.
"I know this may be bad timing pal, but-" Jake said nervously as Chance looked over at him. "But what?" Jake shook his head and rubbed the back of his own neck. "Turmoil escaped from Alkatraz earlier this morning."
