*comes out from behind the bushes*
Hello people! Sorry for disappearing for so long yet again! Let's just say that life has been crazy for me again, but it makes me all the more excited every time I'm able to come back to post something.
Recently, I got an itching to rewatch Jimmy Neutron. I haven't gotten far yet, but I adored this show as a kid, so I still remember it pretty well haha.
I remember shipping these two a lot as a kid, so I guess I was bound to come back to them at some point 😂
I imagine them being a bit older than canon here, probably around 14 or so.
Hope y'all enjoy this fluffy little thing I made!
He sat hunched over his desk, a textbook laying open in front of him. The automatic lights around his room came to life as the sun had begun to set. His eyes scanned the current page in front of him, taking in as much information as his mind would allow.
Jimmy looked up as his phone buzzed. His lips curling into a small smirk as he immediately noticed the pink name icon.
"Studying hard over there, Neutron?"
He looked to his left, his eyes locking onto the house across the street. Cindy was peeking through her window, also sitting at her own desk. As soon as their eyes met, she greeted him by sticking out her tongue.
He laughed a little and shook his head. "Sure am, but it doesn't seem like you are," the keys on his phone clicked as he typed up a reply. He hit the send button, then looked back through the window.
Cindy rolled her eyes as the text popped up on her phone. "Oh, whatever, there's this little thing called 'taking a break'. Ever heard of it?" Her finger hit send and she kept her eyes on the window across the street, always anticipating his reaction.
Jimmy rolled his own eyes as her text came through. She just loved doing this to him. Interrupting each other's study sessions had become a regular thing for them, not that he was complaining. Even geniuses needed a little break every once in a while.
"Well, I guess you're forcing me to take one now, since you keep texting me so much. It works both ways, Vortex." He laughed as he sent that one. He'd be lying to himself if he said that he didn't enjoy messing with her just a little bit.
It was then that Cindy got up from her desk and quickly closed the blinds on her window. That made him laugh even harder. He turned back to the book in front of him, his chest tingling in anticipation of what she might say next.
…
About an hour went by and Jimmy had already made it through all of the required chapters for that night. He closed the book before sliding it into his backpack. His fingers tapped the phone in front of him, illuminating the screen.
Nothing so far.
His eyes turned back to his window, taking notice that her blinds were still closed. He shrugged it off, assuming that perhaps her mother had called her down for dinner and she simply got distracted.
Yeah, let's go with that.
By now, the sun had completely set and he was waiting for his own mother to call him down for dinner.
As if on cue, her voice rang through his ears.
"Jimmy! Can you come down here, please?"
"Be there in a second!" He stood up, putting his phone in his pocket and turning off the lights as he exited the room. As he made his way downstairs, he found his mother standing in the living room. "What is it?"
Judy greeted him with a small smile. "Well, your father just called to tell me that he had to stay late tonight, so I figured that I'd just go pick us up something for dinner. What are you in the mood for?"
"Um…anything is cool, I guess?" He responded, shrugging his shoulders. "You know I'm not picky."
"Okay, sounds good," she walked over to give him a kiss on the cheek. "I'll be back soon, okay? Please don't burn the house down while I'm gone."
Jimmy brought a hand to his cheek, quickly wiping off the kiss. "Yeah, yeah, I know," he said, his voice cracking. "I'll probably just watch a movie with Goddard or something."
"That's more like it," Judy said as she grabbed her keys. "You two have fun!" It was then that he could hear the door closing behind her.
The aforementioned robotic dog came up to him and barked. He knelt down and gave him a little scratch. "Aw, who's a good boy?" Goddard flipped over on his back, taking in all the love from his owner. "Looks like we have the house to ourselves tonight, buddy."
His body jolted at the vibrating sensation in his pocket. He pulled out his phone, bringing it around to his front. That familiar pink icon popped up once again and he felt his heart skip a beat.
"Hey, sorry, I had to help my mom with something. Hope I didn't worry you too much."
Jimmy felt his lips subconsciously curl into a smile as he read her text. As much as he enjoyed the banter between the two of them, he also enjoyed the times when she just felt like another one of his friends.
Yeah, a friend.
His eyes widened as an idea hit him and he rapidly tapped on his phone. "Hey, it's okay, I wasn't worried at all. Actually, my mom just left to go take my dad some dinner, so it's just me and Goddard. Maybe…you'd like to come over? I don't think they'd care."
He squinted, his thumb hovering over the send button. "Hmm, I dunno, is this a bit too direct?" He looked over at Goddard, hoping he'd have some insight. "It's not like I'm asking her out or anything, right? I mean, she's just my neighbor."
"Bark, bark!"
Jimmy sighed. "You're right, it does sound like that," he contemplated deleting the entire thing and starting over. The tugging in his chest, however, would not allow it. "But, I guess there's really no other way to say it."
With that, he hit the send button. His eyes stayed locked to the screen, feeling the sweat building up on his forehead as the little dots popped up.
"Sure."
He released the breath that he didn't even realize he was holding, letting his chest fall. "Really? It was that easy?" He then turned to face the window, his eyes locking onto the front door of the pink house across the street. "Nah, it's Cindy. It's definitely not that easy."
Cindy threw her phone down on the bed as she reached for her jacket. "Hmm, I wonder what he wants," she said to herself. "It's not like him to just ask me to hang out, especially not out of the blue."
It was true that she and Jimmy had become better friends in the last few years. Still, they really only ever hung out in school or Carl, Sheen and Libby always tagged along. Who was she to turn down this seemingly once in a lifetime opportunity?
She then exited her room, turning out the light as she closed the door behind her. "Hey, Mom? I'm going over to Jimmy's for a bit, if that's okay?" Cindy yelled out to her mother from the bottom of the stairs.
"That's fine, just be home before bedtime," her mother said.
"Thanks, I will," she said as she began heading out the front door. The Autumn air was crisp, the crickets still chirping away in the night. Her feet moved her forward, making the small trek across the street.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she climbed the front porch to ring the doorbell. The door swung open almost immediately, much to her surprise.
Jimmy stood in the doorway, trying to hide the smile on his face. "Hey Cindy, thanks for coming over." He stepped aside, allowing her to walk in. "I know it was kinda random, sorry."
"It really was random, that's why I knew that I had to come see what the deal was," she removed her jacket and hung it up by the door. "So, what, did you just really wanna see me, or something?"
He gulped, a feeling of warmth making its way to his cheeks. "Oh, um, I-I guess? Can't I just hang out with a friend on a…Wednesday night?"
Cindy couldn't help but laugh at the dorky expression on his face. "Chill out, Neutron. I'm just messing with you, geez," she said, reaching out to pat his shoulder. "So, what did you wanna do tonight?"
Jimmy led her into the living room. "Well, I thought we could just watch a movie or something? I dunno," he stopped and scratched his head. "I didn't really think it through."
She shook her head. "Sounds about right," she said, teasing him, albeit lightheartedly. "But yeah, a movie sounds okay."
He then nodded and went over to the shelf in the corner that was filled with DVDs. "I actually just got a boxset of the Jurassic Park movies for my birthday," he picked it up off the shelf. "Haven't even opened it yet."
Cindy went ahead and made herself at home on the couch, slipping off her shoes. "I've actually never seen any of those movies," she said. "I thought that the scientists were kind of stupid for wanting to bring back dinosaurs."
Jimmy then looked at her, his brows furrowed in disbelief. "Are you serious right now? I wish I could do what they did," he said, sitting down next to her. "Believe me, I've tried."
"Of course you have," she said, smirking. "That doesn't surprise me at all."
It was then when he noticed the way she looked. Her green eyes sparkled against the dimly lit lamp beside her on the side table. Pink gloss coated her lips, complementing the green shirt she was wearing. Her blonde hair laid messily against her shoulder.
Did she always look this beautiful?
"Hello? Earth to Jimmy? Are you there?" She waved a hand in front of his face. He blinked, but kept his eyes on her. "Why are you just looking at me like that?"
Oh.
He found himself frozen, smiling awkwardly in front of his friend. "Oh, uh, my bad," he turned away from her, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. "Sorry."
The sight of the small blush on his cheeks brought a smile to Cindy's face. "It's okay, let's just watch the movie," she grabbed the set of DVDs from his hand and got up off the couch. "I wanna see these dang dinosaurs."
As she put on the movie, Jimmy went and grabbed a blanket from the nearby closet. Goddard handed him a bowl of popcorn as he walked back to the couch.
"Thanks, boy," he said, petting the robot as he plopped down next to him.
"You only grabbed one blanket," Cindy said as she sat down next to him. Her fingers brushed against the soft material as he threw it across the both of them.
"I thought we could share," he said, his eyes looking at the TV rather than at her. "If that's okay…"
Cindy smirked, scooting closer to him so that their shoulders brushed. "I'm fine with it," her own cheeks heated up as she looked at him, eagerly awaiting his response. "Only if you're okay with me sitting so close to you."
Jimmy gulped, finally turning to look at her again. "Uh, sure, it's fine," if his cheeks weren't on fire before, then they definitely were now. "Popcorn?" He placed the bowl between them.
She reached into the bowl and grabbed a handful. "Thanks," she said plainly, her eyes turning towards the screen in front of them.
The movie started playing and he may have been looking at the screen, but his mind was definitely elsewhere. Every now and then, he'd find himself glancing over at her. He was unsure if it was because he was eager to see her reaction to one of his favorite movies…
…or if he just really liked the way she looked whenever she was focused on something. Her brows would furrow, her lips pursed as she quietly paid attention.
Cindy Vortex was not naïve though, she could feel his eyes on her throughout most of the night. They stayed close to each other, letting their hands brush against the other's on occasion as they reached for more popcorn.
Finally, once they were a good hour into the movie, she spoke. "I think you could do it," she turned to him, watching as his blue eyes met her green ones.
He raised a brow. "Do what?"
"I think you could bring dinosaurs back to life," her voice was soft. "You're smart enough to figure it out."
Jimmy nearly choked on his popcorn. "Am I hearing this right?" He leaned in closer so that their faces were nearly touching. "Did Cindy Vortex just say that I'm smart?"
"Well, yeah," she giggled. "It doesn't take a genius to see that you're one of the smartest people in Retroville, maybe even the world."
This time he could feel the heat spreading from his cheeks to his ears. "Uh, wow, th-thanks, Cindy," his voice cracked as he spoke. "You're pretty smart too, ya know. I've always known that."
"Took you this long to admit it, huh, Neutron?" She suddenly found her hand slipping into his. "I'm glad you've seen the error of your ways."
At this point, it was obvious to both of them that the movie playing was not the most interesting thing in the room.
"Yeah, I…I did," Jimmy let his eyes glance down at her lips, jumping back a bit once he realized just how close they actually were.
"Well, I'm glad," her voice was nearly a whisper as she closed the small gap between them. The kiss was warm, matching the heat radiating from their skin.
Their lips brushed for only a moment before both of them pulled away. Their eyes stayed locked onto one another, seemingly lost in each other's gaze.
Once it finally sunk in that that had just happened, though, they both quickly looked away. Cindy threw her hands up to cover her face, Jimmy's next words barely making it into her burning ears.
"So…that just happened?" He couldn't bring himself to look at her, instead just looking at his lap. "Wow."
He remembered their first kisses. Those kisses happened when they were just kids, though. They seemed so innocent, so sweet. This one; however, felt different.
This time, he could feel the warmth in his chest, the yearning in his heart. He no longer looked at Cindy as his biggest rival. She was his friend and he meant that. Part of him wondered, though, if maybe he wanted something more than that.
"Yeah, it did," she finally moved her hands away long enough to glance over at him. "That was weird." She noticed the hint of sadness in his expression. "But, I liked it."
He smiled at her, making her own heart skip a beat. "I did, too." He turned his hand over, inviting her to hold it, just as she had a few minutes prior.
She accepted his invitation, placing her hand into his and gripping it tightly as their fingers intertwined.
They turned their attention back towards the television, not even caring that they had missed most of the ending. Cindy laid her head on his shoulder, letting her body lean against his as she curled her legs up.
Jimmy jumped a little, sighing happily as her soft blonde hair brushed against his cheek. He let his own head lean against hers, taking in her warmth as she snuggled up against him.
It wasn't long before their eyes fluttered and the two of them nodded off, all the while basking in each other's presence.
Goddard sat up and looked at the two sleeping teenagers, wagging his tail happily. A camera appeared from his side and he quickly snapped a photo of them before hiding it back inside of his body. He then took it upon himself to snuggle up against them, too.
Judy arrived back at home, sticking her keys in the door. She opened it and quietly stepped inside. What she thought would only be an hour quickly turned into four and she figured that Jimmy had probably taken it upon himself to find some dinner.
Her husband followed closely behind her, closing the door behind them. They were surprised to see that the kitchen looked untouched.
Hugh patted her on the shoulder, yawning. "I think I might head to bed already, sugar booger," he whispered. "Tell Jimmy good night for me."
"Hmm, speaking of Jimmy," she quickly noticed that the lights in the living room were still on. Pushing past him, she took a peek inside. A gasp escaped her lips and she turned to him, whispering. "Hugh, come look at this."
He stood next to her, a smile creeping onto his lips when he saw Jimmy and Cindy sleeping all snuggly on the couch. "If that's not the most precious thing I've ever seen," he wiped a stray tear from his eye. "Our little boy is growing up."
Yeah, those two were definitely in for it once they woke up.
Now, anyone who knows me might be able to guess what I based the sleep snuggling scene on 😉
Maybe y'all will see more of these two from me in the future as I rewatch the show, I guess only time will tell
Until next time!
