Thanks for being patient. Nothing crazy happened just focused on my job for a little bit before College. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get these chapters out but I'll try to be consistent. Tell me if you're enjoying this or don't whatever you want. Enjoy!
Walking in the base's halls was the longest thing I've ever felt to this day. I could taste the sweat in my helmet from how nervous I was. I mean, how could I survive? Maine was no longer himself and this Meta already killed so many.
The Meta's faint heavy steps being heard from all the way out here sent chills down my spin. I'll just have to do what I do best. Survive and put on a brave front.
As I approached the generator I could hear all the electricity running. The Meta standing right in the middle fiddling with the device. The fence blocking off full access to the generator but that didn't stop the Meta.
"God damnit…." I no longer notice when I curse, a habit I picked up from being nervous. I spotted Wash up on the right watching the Meta from above.
Even with him up there it didn't feel reassuring. I could see the sims on my radar but couldn't spot them. If I'm gonna die I'm not gonna be a punk about it.
Finally I muster up all my courage gripping my crutch I yell out.
"Hey Meta!" The Meta's quick turn sent shivers down my spin. Not because of the speed but how machine he had become. It was hard to remember the days I called him my teammate. "Looks like your getting sloppy! Can't even finish off a low rank properly!"
I begin to make my way to him my heart beating so fast I swear it could leap out. My hands shook from the adrenaline the crutch shaking as I walked.
The Meta slowly began his approach towards me slowly reloading his launcher. I could see my reflection getting bigger on his domed head. I wonder how I could hurt him? If I was at my full strength I could probably get a few hits in before losing. But now? I am so royally fucked.
Finally we stood inches apart from each other the Meta towering over me as if I were a little kid. I looked up staring right at him, It was at this moment I felt my fear leave me. My body completely relaxing it was as though I had finally felt brave for the first time in my life.
As I stare at my reflection and him I can't help but speak "What happened to you?" As the words left my mouth he quickly launched his hand forward and held my throat. Lifiting me up to his level and began to squeeze tightly. His growls a thing of nightmares the only thing that could match it being nightmarish wolves.
I couldn't breath I tried punching his arm as hard as I could but he wouldn't even budge. Slowly he started to press harder. I could feel myself slipping away before I could hear Wash scream out "Now!."
Quickly Wash jumped down landing in the middle where the Meta had been and began to lay fire onto Meta's back. The bullets clashing against his armor he quickly turned around and used me as a shield, Wash didn't care. He shot right through my stomach connecting with the Meta's shoulder.
The next moment I felt as if I was floating time seemed to slow down. I could see the Meta returning fire, explosions going off at Washs feet as he tries to evade them. Church and Caboose at the top staring at the chaos unfold.
THUD
It wasn't until I hit the fence that I had realized what happened. I got launched full speed towards Wash. "Fuck!"
I couldn't even feel the pain, my adrenaline working overtime. I held my stomach as the blood oozed out. My back felt broken and shoulder dislocated. I looked at my old teammates Wash trying to stay away from the Meta, but he was too slow. The Meta closed the distance quickly slapping Washs gun away and punched him in the gut sending him flying across the room.
As he scrambled to get up he shouted at Church to help. Church threw all the grenades he had as he commanded Caboose to help me. The Meta started to retreat outside as he was being overwhelmed by the explosions. Wash quickly got up and pulled his pistol out not wasting time to get his weapon back. Church jumped down and chased after the Meta as Wash followed not far behind.
I could still hear the gunshots going off as Caboose reached my side. He bent down setting his assault rifle next to me. Getting good look at the damage before speaking "It's okay Purple lady! What do I do?" He didn't have much of an urgency in his voice but he was trying. How was this idiot always so unbothered and calm about this things?
"...Go find some rags or a medkit. I-I think I saw some near the entrance." Even as he nodded and ran to find supplies he was calm. I envy that to a certain point. I was left alone once again. All I could hear was my heart slowing down.
I stared at the ceiling finding a moment of piece. As I felt tears falling from my face I began to feel scared. My team, my….brother.
All gone.
Thanks to me and my cowardly behavior. I wish I could just die and all of them would be fine right now. But that isn't going to happen.
Caboose rushed to my side medkit in hand "I found it!" Even in times as these he sounded so happy. So…..free.
He opened the kit and Delta materialized to give him instructions. I took my hands off my stomach and let him apply the treatments. He applied biofoam and wrapped bandages around my stomach. Surprisingly he didn't need to use something to tighten it he used his own strength. This guy is full of surprises.
When he finished he sat across from his back away from the fence. "Ah, well. That was fun." Delta materialized besides him "I do not believe situations such as these could be labeled as 'fun'." Delta turned to look at me, staring at my wound and injured state. "But….I suppose seeing it from a certain point of view I could see the appeal."
He quickly left with those comments lingering in the air. Little guy hates my guts. It's odd seeing Delta dislike someone, you'd think he wouldn't see the logic in holding grudges. I guess his age is finally catching up with him.
"Caboose…thank you." The words were foregin to me. I had never been the thanking type. Not sincerely anyways.
"Of course! That's what friends are for!" Friends? I guess this id- I guess Caboose sees anyone as friends.
"Right. That's what they're for." I let the words float in my head before remembering what situation I was in. The shooting had stopped. I listened hard and could faintly hear the engine of a warthog roaring, the machine gun letting out a storm of bullets. What was going on out there?
Before I could ask Caboose to get on coms. I see the Meta slowly approaching from behind. "Caboose get to Wash!" I quickly reach for his gun and aim at the Meta as Caboose runs the other direction. The Meta must be back to charge up properly.
I lift the gun and aim it at the Meta the pain in my stomach intensifies from the weight of the gun. As I'm about to fire I realize he isn't heading to me. He's going for Caboose? No. Delta!
Caboose is halfway across the floor and running to the stairs to evade the Meta. I quickly set my sights on him.
"Hey Meta!". I can't let anyone else die because of me. I squeeze the trigger and engulf the Meta with bullets. Pushing him back around the corner.
"Go fuck yourself!" I stop firing as he covers himself behind the wall. As I see Caboose make it out the base I cant help but let out a small smile.
"Just me and you now."
