Chapter 5: References
My military training taught me to provide a reference for acronyms and unfamiliar terms. This is slightly more than that.
I have tried to address the culture gap by identifying idioms, military slang, and referencing them here. This way when you see a phrase you don't get... cherry pick or par for the course... You can look it up here to try to figure out what the intent is behind the phrase. This will help you understand my culture.
References is the section where other works are identified. If you want to know more, you can look them up.
Acronyms, Terms, Translations, Idioms, Slang… is broken down by alphabetically. For foreign words, it is their Latin pronunciation. I apologize for butchering Arabic.

Amazo – Fictional. Ship. Arrowverse creation. It is the name of the cargo ship Ivo uses. In DCU it is a robot that can mimic any superhero power used against it.
ARGUS – Acronym. Fictional. Advanced Research Group United Support. Secret US Government organization meant to track and take down large terrorist organizational threats Name of Director Amanda Waller's covert intelligence agency.
Arrowverse – Fandom. The version of DCU presented in the Arrow (2012).
AU – Acronym. Alternate Universe.
Aura – Term. 1) a distinctive atmosphere surrounding a given source; a subtle sensory stimulus (such as aroma). 2) a subjective sensation experienced at the onset of a neuralgic condition (migraine, epileptic seizure). 3) an energy field that is held to emanate from a living being. 4) a luminous radiation; nimbus.
Banshees – Myth. Creature. A female spirit who heralds death in Irish folklore.
Barkih – Arabic. Mage. League Title for all Shadow Warriors who have trained their magical skill. All may be Apprentice skill or greater.
Bialya – Country. Fictional. DCU. Bialya is a country in located in the Middle East north of Iran and Saudi Arabia. During the Cold War, the country was little more than an arid desert, with a small struggling populace. The Queen Bee declared herself the new ruler of Bialya and instituted aggressive initiatives that seemingly transformed the country overnight. The violent, pock-marked ghetto became a veritable paradise resort.
CEO – Acronym. Corporate Executive Officer. Company leader.
CFO – Acronym. Chief Financial Officer.
CIA – Acronym. Central Intelligence Agency. US Government Organization used to collect and interpret intelligence threats against the US.
Cold Iron – Term. Metal. A type of iron that inhibits magical energy and interferes with magic or the performance of magic. Mages injected or trapped in cold iron are unable to perform magic.
Comatose – State of being. A type of drug used to send the subject to unconsciousness.
Creche – Location. Place where dependent young children are cared for communally. In the League, all children under 18 years old are kept and educated in the Creche. The Qas are responsible for the children in the Creche.
Cult of Blood – Fictional. Organization. DCU. The Cult of Blood was started by a tribal shaman in Zandia who was trying to free his people from the Crusaders. The shaman stole Christ's Prayer Shawl and corrupted it with the aid of the demon Trigon. The shaman became the first Father Blood. His bloodline was cursed.
Dam Dhib – Arabic. Wolf blood. League name. Fasir of The Demon's Claw. 'Afdal. Qayid. Master. Male.
DCU – Acronym. 1) Desert Camouflage Uniform. Tan, brown, and light brown camo. 2) DC Universe.
Demon – Myth. Creature that is known to inhabit the hell dimension. Creature can send its mind and soul to possess humans. Physical beings are rare.
Demon's Claw – Makhlah al Ghul. Arabic. Claws of the Demon. Branch of the League responsible for training and martial prowess. Focus on martial training, arms, and martial combat. It Covers Asia, Russia, and India. Headquartered in Chiu Monastery, Tibet with training facilities for new League members at Nanda Parbat.
Demon's Fang – Nab al Ghul. Arabic. Fangs of the Demon. Branch of the League headquartered in Nanda Parbat. Elite hunting branch of the League led by the Heir. This branch takes responsibility for long hunts with various difficulties. Headquartered at Nanda Parbat, Tibet.
Demon's Head – Ra's al Ghul. Arabic. Head of the Demon. Designated leader of the League of Assassins.
Demon's Horn – Qarn al Ghul. Arabic. Horns of the Demon. Branch of the League responsible for infiltration and technology. Focus on developed nations. Covers North America and Europe. Headquartered in Rome, Italy.
Demon's Spine – Shakwa al Ghul. Arabic. Spines of the Demon. Branch of the League responsible for stealth, infiltration, information gathering, and intelligence gathering. Focus on strategic and tactical planning. It Covers Africa, Australia, and Oceania. Headquartered in Christ Church, New Zealand.
Demon's Support – Saeid al Ghul. Arabic. Support for the Demon. League specialty. This is the part of the League that acts to assist and support the Shadow Warriors with their tasks to maintain balance. Each sub specialty is assigned to various Branches of the League until they have completed their training. They are assigned to various Branches based on the need of those Branches.
Demon's Venom – Daghn al Ghul. Arabic. Venom of the Demon. Branch of the League responsible for magic, sensing, poisons, infiltration, stealth, and distractions. It Covers Central and South America. Headquartered in Lima, Peru.
Duha – Arabic. Morn. League name. Member of the Demon's Claw. 'Afdal. Majahid. Master. Female.
Eadatan – Arabic. Bite. League name. Assigned to Demon's Claw. Eadi. Majahid. Male. Scottish.
Eadi – Arabic. Common. League Rank for all Shadow Warriors that have not achieved any special skills or Elite rank.
Fadi – Arabic. Savior. League Name. Assigned to Demon's Spine. Eadi. Majahid. Male.
Fasir – Arabic. Horseman. League Rank. Short name for Fasir al Ghul.
Fasir al Ghul – Arabic. Horseman to the Demon. League rank. Each Branch of the League is led by a Faris. This Faris is the highest-ranking League member in that Branch. All decisions are final. They are special advisors to Ra's al Ghul. They report to Ra's al Ghul. They manage their Branch of the League. Each Fasir will provide input to Ra's al Ghul about their current problems in their area of the world.
FBI – Acronym. Federal Bureau of Investigations. Law enforcement arm of the US Federal government. Limited to policing within the United States.
Ghosts – Myth. Creatures that are the mind and soul of a deceased sentient being. Also see spirits.
Ghul – Arabic. Beast/Demon.
Glades – Fictional. Location. Poorest district in Starling [Star] City.
Gotham City – Fictional. Location. Large city where Batman is the main vigilante. My AU places Gotham City in the location of Brooklyn, New Jersey. This places it in dark contrast to New York and on the water.
Haris – Arabic. Guard. Keeper. Bodyguard. League Classification. Majahid. Highest level of classification. Bodyguards for Ra's al Ghul.
Hasub – Arabic. Technology. League Elite rank designation for Technology skill. This title is awarded after the member has completed shadow training for this skill.
HIVE – Acronym. Hierarchy for International Vengeance and Extermination. An evil organization founded by Damien Darhk to counter the League of Assassins.
Horseman – Fasir al Ghul – Arabic. Horseman to the Demon. League rank. Each Branch of the League is led by a Faris. This Faris is the highest-ranking League member in that Branch. All decisions are final. They are special advisors to Ra's al Ghul. They report to Ra's al Ghul. They manage their Branch of the League. Each Faris will provide input to Ra's al Ghul about their current problems in their area of the world.
Hub – Term. Location. Place in the League where all the digital tracking is completed. Hasub are responsible for maintaining the connectivity of the Branch to the rest of the League. The Hub is the network center and server farm for each Branch of the League.
Inner Eye – Fictional. Ruya sense. The inner eye (also called the mind's eye or third eye) is a mystical invisible eye which provides perception beyond ordinary sight.
Interpol – Acronym. International Criminal Police Organization. Inter-governmental organization used to police crime around the world with the cooperation of 196 countries.
Kushu Idol – Magic item. Fictional. Arrowverse. The Kushu Idol is a magical death totem that harvests the souls of the slain to convert their death to power for their bonded life. Anyone can bond with the idol, but only a mage with protection runes can do so without going insane.
League – Fictional. Organization. The private name of the ancient order that serves the Source to preserve balance in the world. Short name for League of Assassins.
Ley Lines – Term. Ley lines are straight alignments drawn between various historic structures, prehistoric sites, and prominent landmarks. The idea was developed in early 20th-century Europe. Ley line believers argue that these alignments were recognized by ancient societies that deliberately erected structures along them. Since the 1960s, members of the Earth Mysteries movement and other esoteric traditions have commonly believed that such ley lines demarcate "earth energies" and serve as guides for alien spacecraft. Archaeologists and scientists regard ley lines as an example of pseudoarcheology and pseudoscience.
Lian Yu – Location. Fictional. Arrowverse. Lian Yu is a known magical convergence. It is a Major Nexus where multiple ley lines converge. It is the location where many magical items are imprisoned for safekeeping.
LoA – Acronym. League of Assassins. Name of the League to the Outside world. (Arrowverse name for League).
Majahid – Arabic. Fighter. League Elite rank designation for Fighter skill. This title is only awarded after a shadow has completed several years perfecting their weapons skill in the field of hunting.
Nanda Parbat – Location. Fictional. DCU. Nanda Parbat is the location for the citadel of the League of Assassins. This is a stone fortress craved into the solid stone. It is heavily defended and the seat of power for Ra's al Ghul.
Nexus – Fictional. Location. Magical and mystical convergence point of ley lines.
Partner in Crime – Idiom. Someone who assists in a plot.
Qas/Qasisa – Arabic. Priest or Priestess. Rank. League. League Rank for all Priests and Priestesses. Outside of normal ranks of Shadow Warriors.
Qayid – Arabic. Command. League Elite rank designation for Command skill. This title is only awarded after completing shadow training. Qayid are expected to command large groups or armies. Only a Qayid is authorized to become a Horseman. Fasir.
Qayima – Arabic. Medical. League Support rank designation for Medical skill. This is a highly specialized skill in the League and requires outside schooling. All shadows with this skill hold titles and degrees from the outside world in the medical field.
QC – Acronym. Queen's Consolidated. Short for Queen's Consolidated Inc. Acronym for Oliver's family company.
Queen Consolidated – Fictional. Business. Queen Consolidated is a family company primarily run by the Queen family. QC for short. Headquartered in Starling City [Star City].
Ra's – Arabic. Head. Informal title for Ra's al Ghul. Pronounced 'Rayesh'
Ra's al Ghul – Arabic. Demon's Head. Title and Name of the Leader of the League. Male. Arabic origins.
Ruya – Arabic. Ability. Sight, vision. Identified by the League as a special ability that can only be used by special sentients.
Saeid – Arabic. To help. To assist. To support.
Saqat – Arabic. Fallen. League name. Member of the Demon's Spine. Eadi. Majahid. Male.
Shadow Warriors – Term. Rank. League. This is the most basic designation in the League. All full members of the League are trained to be Eadi. Shadow Warriors.
Shadowspire – Fictional. Criminal Organization. Shadowspire was a US Army Special Forces unit that operated in Afghanistan. Shadowspire consisted of an organization of war profiteers, slave-drivers and criminals. Led by Baron Reiter.
Slam – Fictional. Drug. Slam is a genetically modified hybrid drug created by Baron Reiter. It consists of half heroin poppies and half cocaine leaves. It is intended to give the user a high.
Solstice Visions – Fictional. Ability. Individuals with the Ruya have the ability, when trained, to receive visions from one of the Great Nexus on Winter or Summer Solstice. These visions are a small prediction for the future. A trained Wahy in the League reports their vision to the League and the decision is made to prevent that vision or to assist it.
Soul Bond – Fictional. When two or more souls are bound together by the Source. The League considers the two to be married by the Source. The bonded partners are more resistant to mind, magic, and stressors when together. They are more effective together. Apart they will lose focus and be less effective. If one partner is injured or killed, the remaining partner will fly into a rage.
Spirit – Myth. Creatures that are the mind and soul of a deceased sentient being. Also see Ghosts.
Staff of Horus – Magic Item. Fictional. Arrowverse. The Staff of Horus is a magical item that contains a directory of spells for mages to interact with. It appears as a scepter with a globe. The globe is the portion that contains the information.
Starling [Star] City – Fictional. Location. Large city on the Puget Sound in Washington. I placed it in the rough location of Seattle, WA. I may move it to Tacoma, WA. Either way, major port city on the Sound. Mostly ocean trade and traffic. Gateway to the Pacific.
Tayir Alfiniq – Arabic. Phoenix. League name. Assigned to Demon's Venom. 'Afdal. Barkih. Journeyman. Male. Egyptian origin.
Tempest – Fictional. Organization. Group Name. Malcolm Merlyn's cabal of city leaders that he uses to manage his blackmail project with the eventual goal of destroying the Glades.
The League – Fictional. DCU Term. Short for League of Assassins. True name for the League of Assassins in my AU.
The List – Fictional. Organization. Malcolm Merlyn's handwritten list of criminals used to facilitate his goal of destroying the glades. Everyone on the List is blackmailed into their assistance.
The Source – Fictional. Being. DCU. The Source is the reference for the 'God'. The pantheons are below The Source. While they are gods, they are not as powerful as The Source. The League is answerable only to the Source.
UofSC – Acronym. Location. University of Starling [Star] City.
US – Acronym. United States. Country. Same as USA.
USA – Acronym. United States of America. Country.
WA – Acronym. Washington. State. Inside USA.
Wahy – Arabic. Oracle. League Elite designation for Oracle skill. Given to Shadows trained to use their Ruya.
Yad Alqadar – Arabic. The Hand of Fate. League name of Thomas Merlyn. 'Afdal. Qayid. Journeyman. Male. White. Black hair. Blue eyes. See profile sheet in Part X.
Zandia – Fictional Location. DCU. Country where the Cult of Blood originates. Located in Oceania.
