(Starts at TV Episode 22, Arael’s attack) As Asuka was having her mind invaded by the angel Arael, Shinji starts pondering his actions and why he did them. These lead to some changes in the story, but eh, butterfly effect. May or may not be one-shot.

His first life ended when he moved to Tokyo-3. His second life ended following SEELE and the JSSDF's cataclysmic incursion on the Geofront with Shinji as an unwitting ally. Life on earth teetered on the edge of the third impact and ended with him finding himself alone and abandoned, unable to return he must move on. But is it really third time's the charm?

Shinji thought he finally left his life as Eva pilot and live quietly as a mob. That illusion is shattered and once again he must fight for survival
