Chapter 309

They had a suspect.

Dr. Madison Grey, a psychiatrist for HPD who had been counselling Phillip Lau.

With Alicia on the case they steam rolled through everything. Alicia figured out and proved that Phillip Lau's suicide was staged, most likely an early killing as he was getting too close to figuring out the truth. And because Lau wasn't a part of the game and she didn't want his murder to be investigated she didn't leave a chess piece in his mouth.

From there Alicia figured out that Dr. Grey had been counselling Lau and she had dragged Steven to her office so she could question her and get actual answers. Alicia being a civilian and all. There, in Dr. Grey's office, they had found a book on the history of Medieval chess. From there the clues started to fit together.

They had agreed to wait. He was going to brief his team, and then they would find real evidence before going after Dr. Grey. At least that was what Steve thought they agreed to. Alicia, however, took that to mean break into Dr. Grey's house and call Steve from inside. Yes she had found all sorts of evidence that could help them both prove and put Dr. Grey away as their serial killer, but she had literally broken into the woman's house. That wasn't good. Now he had to go and get her.

He'd have to arrest her for B&E but he'd get the murderer out of it so that wasn't a problem. But on his way, there he got another phone call. Rowan's brand new contact flashed on the screen. The new picture was from the night he found her again, Danny had snapped it for him. She was up in his arms smiling down at him, moments before she kissed him that first time in so very long.

"Hey babe," he said when he answered. "I know I'm supposed to be home for lunch but I have something come up…"

"No, no I know that," she said quickly. "Steve something's wrong I can feel it."

She could feel it. God this was about another void vision. He knew what was coming next, and he knew that he needed evidence not visions. "I don't have time right now, Alicia broke into Dr. Grey's house, she thinks she's our serial killer and…"

"And she is. But something's wrong, if you go in there you're going to get hurt. So please, please, Steven, please wait for back up, or at the very least Danny…"

"I have to get Alicia out."

"Alicia's already been stabbed. There's no point in you getting stabbed too."

Wait, what? Damn Rowan's visions really were specific now, normally she didn't have that kind of information yet. Now he definitely needed to get in on this, even if he might get stabbed too. He pulled up to Dr. Grey's house and took the phone with him.

"I'm already here Rowan," he said. "I've got this. I'll call you when I'm out okay?"

He hung up before she could complain and then headed for the house, particularly the back entrance. He already had his gun drawn because he knew Rowan's feelings were usually pretty solid and he had a feeling her new brand of feelings were every more accurate. He would have wished she could give him a little more other than you're in danger, because he was in danger every time he went to work.

At least now he was super wary.

He walked through the house, he called for Alicia a few times but then stopped doing that. Didn't want to give away his position after all. After some quiet searching with his gun drawn he found Alicia's phone bloodied and abandoned.

He turned on the screen just to be sure it was the right phone and it was, there was a picture of Alicia and her daughter. But while he was distracted someone snuck up on him and Steve was unaware until the knife had completed it's deadly arc.

The pain of the knife plunging in to his back took him to the ground and all he could think was that Rowan was right. He should have waited.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

She hadn't pulled out the energizing ray since she had come back to Hawaii but today, today she needed it. Steve was, once again, not listening to her. Just because she had feelings and strings instead of real evidence.

She wasn't going to intervene. She didn't want to, not really, but the second she felt that phantom pain in her upper back she knew she was going. Because she had literally just felt Steven get stabbed and his strings were getting darker by the second. She went out to their beach for a handful of stones she put in her pocket before returning to the house.

She sent a text off to Wo with the name of the serial killer: Dr. Madison Grey. It had come to her the second Steven got stabbed. She told him Steve was in trouble and she was going to go get him. She then put her phone in her pocket, because this would be key to him finding her after she jumped.

She then jumped from her kitchen to the roof of Dr. Grey's house. She took the rocks out of her pocket and then whipped them down the slatted roof so they rolled tumbled and fell to the deck below. Once she heard the door to the house open as Grey moved out to investigate the strange noise Rowan opened the void again.

She dropped through the roof, landing soundlessly in front of two bodies. One Steve's, one Alicia's. She hadn't ever met Alicia before and this was one hell of a way to meet someone for the first time. She waited, crouched in front of them waiting to see if Grey would come back in. When Rowan didn't hear anything she turned. Steve was whispering her name, his bound hands reaching out of her.

"I told you, I told you you were going to get stabbed, but you didn't listen" she hissed to him but she let him hold on of her hands. "I swear. You've ruined your pretty blue shirt and everything, couldn't ruin the cargo pants though, could yah?"

"Ro… Rowan this isn't the time…"

"How did she get here Steve? Where did she come from?" Alicia asked but Steve was able to explain, he wasn't able to focus on anything but Rowan now that she was there.

"Magic," Rowan answered absently. She looked over Steve's duck taped hands and the laceration in his back. "I should have brought a knife."

Rowan felt the air shift when the Grey appeared back in the room. She heard Alicia's muffled cries secondly but Rowan had already jumped to the side avoiding the knife coming for her. She kicked the feet out from under Grey and then got up and rushed for the nearest door.

This door opened into a living area and she could already see a door to what was probably a small room or closet. She opened a portal back to the kitchen in that doorframe just as Grey slid into the room. Rowan shut the portal beside her and scampered past Steven and Alicia again.

"How did she get back here so quick?" she heard Alicia ask but Steve was busy saying her name over and over no doubt in a panic over what was happening.

She turned to go back to Steve with the knife she got from the kitchen counter spotted Grey coming for her again and turned quickly going out a back door and around the verandah looking for another door. She got that one open, opened yet another portal to the kitchen and then slid to a stop by Steve.

She slapped the knife into his hands. "Deal with that yourself."

Grey showed up again and Rowan made a mad dash for the next door, the same one that took her into the living room, with the woman giving chase she went right for that closet slammed the door shut and then waited until she heard Grey enter the room. She opened a portal beneath her feet and dropped once more this time into the living space right behind Grey.

Given she had the element of surprise Dr. Grey wasn't ready for it when Rowan slammed her body into her. Grey slammed into the door of the closet and went down. But when she turned, she kicked her straight into the chest and right back into that door where she slumped to the ground.

Breathless Rowan went back to Steven. Well that was the threat neutralized.

"Three years," she said to him as he fumbled with the knife. She went to the kitchen again, looking for a good hiding spot. "Three years I've been telling you what's going to happen and you never listen."

Steve groaned. "Rowan, Rowan please."

"No, no, you did this you get out by yourself. Please, go a head, Steven. You don't need me and my visions get out by yourself, huh?"

She pulled out her phone and looked at it. Nothing from Wo. Well that was disheartening, didn't her brother care? Well, they were arguing, and she hadn't told him she was going after a serial killer.

She shot off another text: Getting chased by a serial killer. In case you care. And then sent it off before she put her phone on silent and hid it at the very bottom of a drawer filled with identical tea-towels.

She watched Steven fumble a little more and then sighed.

"Alright, look, say I help you," she whispered coming to kneel beside him. "Say I help you get out of this one, will you listen to me from now on?"

"Rowan, Rowan…"

"Come on, it's not that hard, just say yes I will listen to you. Come on, Steven," she said trying to get him to focus. It had just dawned on her that maybe his injury was hindering him, he was bleeding and in pain. Probably not a good time to taunt him, or to try and get the upper hand on him in their relationship.

"Alright, fine, I will help you, but you and I are going to talk about this when we get home, best believe," she said. She picked up the knife and went to cut the tape from his wrists when something grated over her secondary senses. She turned, saw Alicia coming at her, a wooden tenderizer in her hands. Rowan got half of a shit out of her mouth before it collided with her temple and the lights went out.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Alicia had gotten Grey talking while Rowan was out. She hit her with her theory, that Grey was doing this because her father molested her while teaching her how to play chess. But Grey turned the tables, threw Alicia's daughter's death into her face. Made it Alicia's fault. Then she had left the three of them there to suffer alone.

Steve might have cared more that Alicia's daughter had died at the hands of a different serial killer if he wasn't mostly concerned with the fact that his girlfriend had been knocked out cold.

Rowan was still out beside him while Alicia had managed to drag herself up. She was propped against the wall across from Steve staring out at the window.

Rowan groaned and Steve winced, alright so she was awake. "Ugh my head," she whispered. "I have not missed this."

Steve sighed. He was grateful that's she was okay and feeling better but he hadn't want her here with him for this. "Why did you come here by yourself?" he snapped. "What were you thinking?"

Rowan turned her bleary eyes to him, narrowed in angry slits. "I'm having a crazy amount of Déjà vu, and I refuse to go back to arguing about the same things we were arguing about before I left," she growled. She then turned to her hands. "Huh."

"Its duct tape," he said to her but she was shaking her hands as if trying to shake it off, but it was just two quick motions. She did it once, and then twice, and then paused. "Rowan what are you doing?"

Rowan did it again, the same motion. "Maybe I need other hands," she murmured to herself. Great she was concussed.

Steve sighed, he didn't need this right now, he had enough to worry about now his baby was exhibiting signs of concussion and starting to panic.

"Is she okay?" Alicia asked but Steve just shrugged. He wasn't sure. He was disastrously worried she'd do something void related and then he'd have to explain it to Alicia. He still wasn't certain how to explain how she went out one door and came through a different one seconds later.

"Uh why didn't you listen to me," she hissed, shaking her hands. "We gotta get out of here before the King and Queen get here."

See how could she possibly know that the King and Queen were missing from the chess board? he hadn't told her that. Her visions had never been so clear before. Rowan shook her hands a few more time as if trying to shake the duct tape loose. And with each motion she seemed to get more and more frantic to get out.

"Con!" she called shaking her hands again. God, what was she calling him for? "CON!" she near screeched. There was a crackle around her and then Steve really began to panic. Now was not the time to deal with the void.

Steve lurched, rolling half onto her to calm her down, his hands going to her closest shoulder. "No, no, baby, no," he said and just like that the crackling stopped and she turned to him. "It's okay. Con's not here, but I'm here I'm going to get us out of this."

"There's a song. He said I was singing a song and he came for me. I don't remember which song pulls Con. He's never far when I need him," she whispered her eyes wide and dilated. God she was so fucking concussed. "I want Con," she said with a big sniff.

Well wasn't that a kick to the ego?

"It's going to be okay."

But tears had started filling her eyes and suddenly she let out a sob of not his name, or even Con's. She cried for Wo. God was she trying to make him feel like shit?

"Babe, just… why don't you pick a different song to sing, huh? Just sing something else okay?" he said. "I'd love to hear one of your other songs, can you do that?"

He turned back to ask Alicia a question when Rowan had the nerve to ask: "Any requests?" Steve glared at her and she turned away with a prim: "Fine, I'll pick."

Steve turned his eyes back to Alicia. "Can you see her?" he asked and Alicia nodded.

"It looks like she's waiting for someone."

Breakfast at Tiffany's and bottle of bubbles. Girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble. Lashes and diamonds and guys for my flings, buy myself all of my favourite things.

Steve turned to Rowan horrified, what the actual fuck was she singing?

Been through some bad shit, I should be a sad bitch. Who woulda thought it'd turn me to a savage? Rather be tied up with calls and not strings, write my own checks like I write what I sing, yeah.

My wrist, stop watchin', my neck is flossin', make big deposits, my gloss is poppin'. You like my hair? Gee thanks, just did it. I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it. Yep.

Oh holy fuck. This was a song she wrote when they were separated. But it wasn't one of the ones she had given to Pete to sell. This was about what happened to her how she became… the new her, wasn't it? She cared about material things and this is a song about that.

Wearing a ring but I ain't his missus. Cause my man chose to work and fuck other bitches. So I'm gonna spoil all my friends with my riches. Think retail therapy's my new addiction.

Whoever said money can't solve your problems. Must not have had enough money to solve 'em. They say: which one, I say: nah I want all of 'em. Happiness is the same price as red-bottoms.

Fuck this song was bout him. Fuck her. Fucking hell. Yeah he needed that to stop.

"Okay babe, babe, I need you to pick another song…" he said.

"Why? Cause this song spouts the truth?" she said halting her song mid lyric. Steve glared at her.

"That song is about me and how you replaced me with material objects."

She dared to sing one of the lines in the song back to him.

My man chose to work and fuck other bitches.

"NO I DID NOT!" he snarled. "That was a lie he told you."

"Lynn." "… we weren't together at that point." "Catherine." "… Okay but that was one. It was one bitch, not multiple, and I thought you left me. I thought you left me and went to be with your brother in Japan…"

"If you don't end things with him right now I swear to god I'll marry Catherine don't fucking try me!"

Great she was loosely quoting him again. "When we get out of this babe, when we get out of this I'm gonna yell at you, and we will scream at each other until we've figured out. But I gotta get us out of this first so could you stop making this difficult?"

Rowan's lip trembled. "You always say mean things to me," she cried a single tear falling down her cheek. "You do. And I came here to help you and everything…"

"Ro, Rowan, please don't do that," he pleaded. "I didn't mean it okay?"

"I wanna go home," she cried and once again the air around her crackled, Steve even saw the orange bolts of electricity sparking around her. He lurched again got a hand to her shoulder and the electric crackle went away again.

"Baby please, please, just let me…"

Rowan put her head to his shoulder. "When they get here these assholes are SO dead."

Dr. Grey walked towards them, he watched her come through the door but she walked through it and vanished. Both Alicia and Steve blinked their eyes but beside him Rowan laughed. After a few charged minutes where they heard yelps farther in the house Dr. Grey stumbled into the kitchen.

"What's the matter. It seems like you've completely forgotten the layout to your own house."

"What have you done?" Dr. Grey hissed at Rowan and finally Rowan's eyes opened again revealing her ice-blue Ice Queen eyes. Oh shit.

"Forgetting things, first sign of many mental illnesses. Dissociative disorders. Alzheimer's. Which one do you have, do you think? I'd recommend you get yourself tested."

"That's a lot of bravery for a girl who failed to save everyone," Dr. Grey shot back. "If only you were smart enough, but no one's ever been able to outsmart me."

"Okay, it's never a good idea to play psych games with a shrink's kid," she warned her. "I may have a long list of insecurities but I know how to hide them from the likes of you..."

Grey stood overtop of her now and actually laughed. Steve tried to climb up, to cover Rowan from her, but Grey simply kicked him aside. "Oh you think so? Why don't we talk about your daddy issues? Your need for approval so deep-seated that you let yourself get caught instead of just setting him free. Had you cut the ropes you could have gotten out of here. And let's look at the Commander, shall we? Does he remind you of your daddy? That would explain why your type is someone years older than you. What, do you think you can get your daddy's missing approval if you can just prove to him that you're good enough?"

Steve watched a range of emotions play across Rowan's face. She let out a little bit of a sob. "How… how could you say something so…." And then a smile slid onto her face. "Completely and utterly false? Wow you're a shit shrink."

Dr. Grey scoffed but Rowan wasn't done.

"My deep-seated need for approval comes from a mommy who never loved me. The age gap is because I'm looking for someone to take care of me the same way my father did because I'm so used to having to cope on my own and I would just like, for once, to not be the strong one all the time. And that also comes from my mother and her tendency to isolate me the second I mess up. But I'm working on that and none of that is what you should be worried about. You know why?"

Dr. Grey smiled coldly clearly just humouring Rowan at that point. She crossed back to the kitchen where she picked up that wooden meat tenderizer again. "Why?"

"Because I'm exactly like you. Mostly. I've got a better grip on my… tendencies but I'm wired just like you," Rowan said which was nothing short of lies. She wasn't anything like this woman, and she had literally no control over her own tendencies. "Which means I know all your next moves. You're going to get rid of our bodies and then go on the run. I'm guessing… New York, right? Big city easy to get lost. But that's not going to help you. Because my friends, my friends aren't going to stop until you kill yourself."

Grey was staring at her now. Eyes wide.

"That's right. Not kill you. When you kill yourself. They're going to hunt you and haunt you. They'll isolate you, make you paranoid, they'll take everything you hold dear and turn it to dust around you. You'll have nothing. No one. You'll be ruined. Your perfect crumbling empire of everything in it's place will be turned asunder, you will live, breathe and die in chaos. I am your check mate. And I'm going to make sure you m regret even daring to start this game."

Grey brought the mallet down on Rowan's face again knocking her out but Steve swore he saw the look of fear in her eyes. She stalked back out onto the patio where she met two people. A woman and man, Steve didn't recognize them but Alicia did.

Donald and Mallory Witten, both serial killers that the FBI had been looking for, for over 10 years. They must have been the King and Queen, the last two pieces of from the chess board.

Dr. Grey smiled down at them. "Remember when I said I wasn't going to kill you? Well I'm not, they are."

As they got dragged out of the house, from inside a kitchen drawer he swore he heard an automated voice say Hello and welcome to the Sanctuary network. Locations services online.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

They drove them to some remote location by the ocean. The plan was to drown them because Alicia had a phobia of drowning. Steve tried to tell them that Dr. Grey was trying to set them up, that they were part of some sadistic chess game. But they wouldn't listen. They were certain that they were there, not because Dr. Grey wanted them to be, but because they wanted Alicia. She had arrested Donald once and Mallory had helped him escape. Now they wanted to have fun with Alicia.

They taunted her first with her daughter, and how they had wanted to play with her but someone else got to her first. Then they told him all about Alicia's phobia of drowning and how that was how they were going to end her.

They parked and got out. There was a moment of charged silence where Alicia apologized to him in a soft breathless whisper but Steve shook his head. He just wanted Rowan to get out of this safely.

The back doors of the van opened and they took Alicia first. Cut the tape from around her ankles and then shut the door on them.

Steve rolled over to Rowan. God her head, bleeding from the two hits she had taken. "Rowan, Rowan, you gotta void away from here, baby," he whispered to her. "I know that's how you got here, and it's okay, you can go, you can leave me behind, just please baby, go. Get yourself out of here."

But Rowan wasn't coherent. She barely understood him. She had started mumbling, some sort of tune coming out that he did not recognize.

But the song didn't rise up until the couple returned, cutting Steve's ropes and pulling him from her.

Do not try me devil, devil. Cannot buy me, devil, devil. You won't make a fool of me, oh no. what makes you so special, special, to think I would ever settle, for that devious dance between you and me devil, devil.

What the fuck was she writing songs about their villain for? Did she just come up with that now? Really?

They made him walk towards the edge of the cliffs. It wasn't a long drop, one he most definitely would survive either way, but it wasn't the rocks. The tide was coming in and cresting over the edge, and at his feet was a hole, a hole that would soon be underwater.

He could get himself out of this but Rowan, Rowan was concussed. He wasn't sure he could save both Alicia and Rowan from this, not in the state that she was in. But he figured, if there was any a time to use Wo Fat against his villains and not feel guilty, this would be it.

"You know who she is right?" Steven asked them. "That girl you have in the van? She's Rowan Pierce. That Rowan Pierce. Do you know what he'll do to get her back? What he'll do if you kill her. Riku Sato didn't fare too well, and you're not nearly as powerful as him."

The two exchanged glances. "Don't you worry about your precious Miss. Pierce. The two of you won't be separated for long."

He got one last look over his shoulder where the truck was before they shoved him into that hole. The last Steve saw of Steve Rowan was still in the back of that truck. A truck with orange electric bolts skating over the surface. For the first time ever, Steve was actually glad to see any sort of void activity. With any luck she'd void to somewhere safe and leave him behind.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Con got a call from Wo Fat with something along the lines of Rowan being chased by a serial killer. But that wasn't possible because he was literally across from her house and she hadn't moved in hours. But Wo Fat was adamant so Conejo actually broke into the McGarrett homestead. Rowan wasn't there, but the energizing ray had been left on the kitchen table.

She had jumped.

Before he could call Wo to tell him that, he swore he flickered. For a moment he saw a house and the surf and a sterile white kitchen and then he was back in McGarrett's place looking at an energizing ray. But something had happened, that kind of flicker, it could only mean Rowan was very much in danger. So, he called Wo Fat and told him that.

After that Wo Fat had traced Rowan's phone. Sandy got her location in a matter of seconds. She was at a shrink's house. Dr. Madison Grey. But that didn't make sense because Rowan wasn't seeing a shrink… unless she started seeing one without telling them.

So Con went over, broke into the place and tore it apart. He didn't find Rowan, but had Conejo not only found Rowan's phone in a drawer in the suspect's house, he found the chess board she was going on about. That and it was the same place he flickered to. Which mean that the only reason Rowan had ben there was because Dr. Grey was the serial killer and Rowan had tried to pull him here but something had gone wrong. The place reeked of bleach which was not a good sign and there was no sign of Rowan. So Conejo sat himself down in one of Dr. Grey's chairs, content to wait for this dumb bitch to come back so he could torture her a little bit for information.

But he went from sitting in that house to sitting in a van. A disgusting old Ford van, the kind they didn't make anymore. It looked like Hawaii and he was assuming it was Hawaii cause it was just like Rowan to pull him to help her without any fucking warning. The problem was he didn't know where she was.

There was a squawk of annoyance he knew he recognized he turned in time to see a woman and a man struggling to pull Rowan out of the back of the van he was currently sitting in. Rowan had been behind him the whole time?! They must not have noticed him sitting in the driver's seat, well that was going to work to his advantage.

Con practically tripped over himself as he threw himself out of his seat and out of that van. He sprinted the short distance between him and the couple who were having a hard time with Rowan wishing he had brought his mask with him cause people were about to died up on that beach. He charged them tackling all three of them to the ground. Rowan cried out his name in indignation but he was too busy to worry about her at that moment. He scrambled over her to attack the man with the gun. He disarmed him with one sweep and then he punched him so hard in the face he fell to the ground.

When he turned, the woman came at him, having picked up the gun. But he wasn't about the chivalry life, he'd hit a girl no problem. Con ducked her as she fired the gun at him and then tackled her, knocking her down to the ground, winding her.

Conejo stood, kicked the woman in the chest to keep her on the ground. The man came at him again, this time with a knife. But he stepped out of the way, then grabbed the arm as it swung past him and then used all that momentum to flip him onto the ground. He then slammed his booted foot down on his wrist and then kicked his arm with his other foot, effectively breaking his upper arm and took the shoulder joint out of the socket. The man howled, in agony, but Conejo wasn't done with him yet. He pulled one of his guns from under his arm as quickly as he could and shot four rounds into the man's chest.

He heard the woman cry out from behind him, he figured her to be getting up, probably with the gun in her hands again, and dropped to his knees just as she fired. He leveled his revolver with her chest and shot her twice. He reloaded his gun calmly, shot the man between the eyes just to be sure he was dead and then he walked back over to the woman.

"Shoulda left her in the van, ese," he told her and then blew her brains out too.

For a second, he caught his breath and then he went to Rowan. He knelt down beside her, his hands going to her hands were bound with duct tape. "Hey, hey," he said. When her eyes focused on him and she hit him with a lazy smile and a drawn-out exclamation of his name. Ah shit she had hit her head and judging by how badly she was bleeding he'd say she got hit once or twice with a blunt object.

"What the hell happened to your head, kid?" he asked as he pulled out a knife from his boot and cut her hands loose.

"I got hit with one of those meat pounder things…"

"A tenderizer? Metal or wooden."

"Wooden." Right well that was the better of the two options. She blinked her eyes and looked around and then suddenly her eyebrow creased as if she had just realized that she was probably in a lot of danger. "Where's…"

"They're dead, I dealt with them. Which one of them did that to you and I'll gut them, they won't feel it but it'll make me feel better."

Rowan shook her head. "Steve," god, Wo was right, she always wanted Steve. "Steve got stabbed."

Well fucking hell. That wasn't good now was it?

"Yeah? And Where's Steve?" Conejo asked looking around but all he saw was Rowan and there hadn't been anyone else in the back of that van when he got there. But if Rowan was tied up and this was some sort of, throw into the ocean, body dump, Steve couldn't be too far behind, right? Unless they stabbed him and dumped his body first.

"Somewhere," she said her head rolling as she tried to look around. Great so he was here?

"No, Ro, Steve's not here."

She nodded, the motion very exaggerated. "Yes he is," she said. "Steve's in the hole."

"Steve's in the…" he started and then a few feet away a spray of water crested over the rocks and he swore he could make out the mouth of something where the water fell away into. On no… Steve was in there?

"Please get him out, Con, please," she begged tears falling out of her eyes. "My head hurts and I want him please…"

Aw fuck him. She knew he hated water, and that he especially hated the ocean. Why the hell would she ask that of him?

"Okay wait here," he said because he knew better than to argue with her. He took off his jacket and wrapped it around her, and then put his phone into her hands. "Maybe call your brother, huh? He's freaking out."

Rowan made some kind of noise in the back of her throat and then seemingly cuddled into the jacket as if it were a blanket. Fuck she was gonna need a doctor. He made his way carefully around the rocks to the edge of the hole, already stripping himself of his holsters but wanting to keep his guns near-by just in case. He peered down into the darkness, he didn't see anyone down there, just blackish pitching water.

"Steven?" he called down the hole. "Steven McGarrett?"

Immediately someone came into view, treading against the rising water. "Is that… is… Con?"

Only Rowan could call him that. But he didn't have time to argue with Steve at that moment. "Can you climb up?" Conejo called back but Steve shook his head.

"No, too steep, I'm going to try to swim out, but Alicia…"

He was still talking, but Con knew he wasn't going to let Steve try and swim out of that underwater cave, with another girl who by the sounds of it didn't know how to swim. Fuck, he was going to have to get them out.

He glanced back at Rowan who was effectively out of it and knew that things were gonna get weird as shit and if any of her stories were an indication poor McGarrett was going to flip.

He hesitated a little bit, only because he really, really didn't like the ocean, and then went about clearing everything out of his pockets. He waited for the wave to crest, giving him enough time between the next swell before jumped into the hole and crashed into the water.

When he resurfaced, Steven was on him. "What the hell is the matter with you?!" he cried.

"You ain't swimming anywhere," Con said back. "Rowan's gonna get us out."

"ROWAN HAS A CONCUSSION!" Steve thundered.

He was holding the other woman up who seemed to be getting more and more panicked by the second. Grappling onto him like an octopus.

"Is this Kono?" he asked, though he had a feeling it was. If he was right, Kono was the woman who shot him in the arm and then kicked him so hard he went flying.

"No, this is Alicia Brown, she's an FBI profiler…" he then paused and cried: "Why am I doing introductions right now?"

But Conejo knew exactly why he was doing introductions at that moment. "Do you know her well?" he asked him but when Steve said no he punched her right between the eyes and knocked her out.

"WHAT THE HELL, DUDE?!" Steve cried trying to keep her up and above water.

"Hey! What your girl can do is a secret. I'm not going to have someone we can't trust find out about what she can do. Now do you want out of here or not?" he asked.

"I told you I was gonna swim!" he shouted at him but Con shook his head.

"I'm not letting you swim out of here and get stuck in the currents. Are you gonna listen to me or what?" he asked and Steve sighed. Con nodded, treading weakly to keep himself up. "Okay look shit is about to get really fucking weird and I need you to just stay calm and do everything I tell you to, okay?" Steve rolled his eyes but nodded and Con nodded back. "Kay… this is important you need to scream."

"Scream?"

"Yes, scream. Scream for Rowan," he said. Steve just stared at him like he was crazy. So he turned away, angled his head upwards and screamed her name.

There was no answer. Of. Fucking. Course. She was making him look crazy.

"Come on Rowan! I need help here!" he cried. "Rowan?!"

"What the hell is she gonna do, huh?" Steve hissed but Con just glared at him.

"Listen to me. If you just trust me, if you do as I say, she will get us out of here, do you understand?" he growled. "Just humour me. Do as I say, and uh… let me hold onto you."

Steve sighed but turned his head up to the opening and shouted: "Rowan! I need you! Rowan!"

Already the air around them began to crackle. OF FUCKING COURSE! McGarrett says two goddamn words and the void was already working to grab him. Con gripped Steve's shoulder a little tighter. "Rowan?!" he screamed. "Rowan! HELP ME!"

For a second he flickered, the orange electric bolts crackling around them. Together Con and Steve shouted the same sentence: "Rowan HELP!"

And in a flash they weren't in the water anymore. The void twinkled around them for all of three seconds before they tumbled out of it and into the sand. When Rowan used the void when she was out of it, normally there was some sort of backlash, they'd end up in weird places, or separated or she'd be wrapped up in strings and it would take a lot to get her out. but Steven was there and he got her out before and Con was certain that he could do it again.

Except when Conejo pulled his head of the sand there was no craziness, because Steve was sitting a few paces away an unconscious Rowan in his arms, his head bowed to hers.

For a moment Conejo just stared at them. The way the man held her tightly his forehead touching hers, like she was his world, like his grip alone would save her. This was what Wo Fat had kept Rowan from, this was what Rowan had mourned.

But then he realized he had a whole different problem. Rowan was out cold. Conejo just sighed. "Great. Now I'm stuck here until she wakes up."

Steven shot him a glare but Conejo ignored him he was just glad he was out of the water.
