Chapter 311
Kono lifted up her pistol took a deep breath, leveled it with Rowan's chest and then dropped it.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry I just can't. I can't. This is crazy. I'm not going to shoot you."
Rowan who had been in a crouched battle stance dropped it immediately. "Oh my god stop being a pussy and shoot me already!"
Kono turned plaintive eyes to Steve who sitting a safe distance away watching them with an unamused look upon his face. At the table with him was Danny, Grover and Chin all watching on to see Rowan's newest trick.
After what happened with Dr. Grey both Steve and Rowan were stuck at home for bedrest, much to the chagrin of their new governor. Rowan with a nasty concussion and head injury, Steve with his stab wound.
Rowan was so badly concussed that Nahele came back from his camping trip early to help Steve manage her. When he went back to work, he had stories to answer some of the questions that the gang had based on the testimony that Alicia had given them. Not a sworn testament of course, but her own version of events that she did not share in the paperwork as per Steve's request. When it became clear that Steve could not answer all of their questions, he promised that Rowan would let all be clear and he would let them know when that day had come.
That day… was today.
"Gurl, with you throwing down comments like that it's only a matter of time before she actually does shoot you," Grover said.
Danny turned to Steve. "You're taking this remarkably well," he said. Referring, of course, to Rowan telling Kono to shoot her first thing upon arrival. "I would have thought you'd be up there already making for damn sure Rowan doesn't get shot."
"No, I'm staying over here where I know she'll be safe."
"How does you, staying over here, equal her being safe if Kono's pointing the gun?" Grover asked.
"Because I mess with her powers, and I don't want my anxiety about this little exercise to get her shot and killed, now do I?" Steve snapped.
"Well the last time that happened you came and wrapped me up and strings and I came out not shot so, if I get shot just do that again."
Steve straightened in his seat as he stared at his girlfriend after that confession. "I'm sorry… WHAT?!"
Everyone was surprised by that little bombshell, especially since she had said it so nonchalantly.
But Rowan seemed intent to ignore Steve, luckily Daniel Williams came to the rescue. "I'm with Steve on this one, dial back and explain what you just said."
"Can't, we're not at that part of the story yet." Everyone gave her a strange look and then Rowan just up and changed the topic like she was prone to doing. "Come on Kono, just shoot me already."
Kono turned back to Steve who was sitting there looking far from pleased. His arms crossed over his chest, his jaw pulsing away to the point where they could see that bulging vein in his neck.
"And you're 100 percent sure about this?" Kono asked her.
"Yes Ma'am. I'm all charged and ready to go."
"What does that mean? Charged?"
"My powers. They're all energized and ready to go," she said even though that didn't explain anything to them. They turned their eyes to Steve who revealed what looked to be some kind of gun. Except it had a strange bulb where the bullets should go. The rest seemed to be made of a silver looking metal. Looked like something off of Star Trek or Men in Black.
"It's literally called an energizing ray. One hit from this and she's got power to do her little tricks and not give me a coronary."
"Okay, enough questions, time for a demo. Shoot me. I promise I won't get hurt. I promise."
Kono lifted up her pistol half shut her eyes as if she couldn't bear to look and then squeezed the trigger. Rowan's hand reached out to the side. Kono had shot wide which meant Rowan had to actually reach for it before it hit the house. A portal appeared and then her other hand extended towards the line of beer cans where one pinging once the bullet hit it and popped up into the air.
Everyone stared at her, mouth open in shock. But it was Steve who whispered: "Oh my god it worked."
Rowan turned to the others who had been watching her. "Anyone else wanna try shooting me? I can do up to four rotating shots at once, but if you distract me there a good chance I'll get shot and then I'll do like a vortex thing…"
"Vortex thing?" Steve echoed with a groan. "Rowan, just tell me the fucking story! Okay, fast forward to that one and then go back."
"It's fine. You stopped it last time without expecting it or even knowing what you were doing, so I have complete faith that you can do it again if necessary! Except it won't be necessary cause I so totally got this!"
Steve clearly didn't like that answer. Beside him Danny raised his hand. "So like… What did you just do? Did you like… deflect…"
"No, I diverted the bullet. I opened a portal and changed it's trajectory. That move's not one that I really practice that often, so we don't have a name for it. We can just go with diverting."
"Wait a second, that's a move you haven't practiced? Why the hell is that the one you opened with then?" Steve cried.
"Cause it's the coolest," she said with a shrug and Steve collapsed back to the chair with an aggressive sigh of: I swear to god…
"Okay, well that implies that you have other moves," Chin said and around them the others ooohhhed at that. "Do you have other moves?"
Rowan opened her mouth to answer but Steve had pulled out his phone and made a call.
"Hi it's Steven. She's fine. I know I'm not supposed to bother you but she said something about how she got shot and I wrapped her up with strings and she came out not shot. She won't tell me what that means, what does that mean?" Steve asked he was silent a minute before his eyebrows furrowed. "What do you mean which time? It happened more than once?"
"We'll get to it when we get to it!" Rowan called but Steve groaned.
"For the love of god she's killing me! Can you please just… Seriously? You're really going to… fine. Fine! Thanks for nothing!" he then hung up the phone and glared at her. "Your brother is useless. Apparently if you're not going to tell me then he's not. Which is bullshit."
"Wo's gotten very good at solidarity," Rowan said with a very serious nod. "I barely have to remind him to just go with what I say."
Steve just glared at her before sighing and saying: "Just… just… go on, tell them about the other moves."
Danny put a hand up. "Time out, we'll get back to the powers thing," he said and then turned to Steve. "Did I just hear you just call him… Wo Fat… her brother?"
"Yeah, he's doing that now. I think he's given up on fighting it."
"Yeah I've given up on a lot of things," Steven growled. Grover nodded and took that as a suggestion to move on.
"Right, well, we want to hear about the other moves then, go on little miss."
"Okay, sure. I have jumping, hopping, dropping, throwing, pulling and I can do a shield. Which would you like to see first?"
"I've already seen the shield, I vote anything else," Danny said.
Rowan winced. "Yeah… sorry about that."
"Is that the thing that took Chin and I off our feet at your ex's concert?" Grover asked and Rowan nodded. "Yeah, not that. But I would like to know why your boyfriend here was unaffected."
"Short hand — he's my off switch. Pretty sure that means he's immune or at least has the power to counter anything I do. Long hand — is really long and I'm not like… totally sure… so until I can confer with my dad let's just go with short hand."
Kono had left Rowan's side to take her seat at the table. "Okay, well knowing you and your literal naming, I'd say pulling is the act of you bringing something to you, like an object?"
Rowan nodded. "And throwing is me throwing it somewhere else."
"Is dropping what you did to Steven?" Danny asked. "That put him in the ocean?" Rowan nodded. "I'd love to see that," he said turning to Steve. "Care to demo or will that not work on you either?"
"Nope I can portal him just fine," Rowan said. Absently she added: "Probably could stop me if he wanted to though, wouldn't be a good idea, heaven knows what might have happened. Could have ripped open his wound or lost him in the void. So, don't mess with portals, kay babe?"
Steve just shook his head at her like he was just beyond frustrated with her. Probably with the fact that she was more concerned about his incision instead of the fact that if he messed with her powers mid drop he might have gotten lost in the fucking void. God her priorities were seriously askew. They had been like that for a while, but they had gotten worse since her year with Wo Fat.
"Kay, well… none of us saw dropping…"
Suddenly a black void opened up under her feet and Rowan just dropped out of sight. The portal closed up as quickly as it opened and then they were all left there staring at the spot where she had been.
"Give it a second," Steve said and then he pointed up above them.
They all looked up in time to see a portal open, Rowan height above the table. A portal that Rowan dropped right out of and landed on top of the table. Unfortunately, the table wobbled and Rowan lost her footing, but Steve was ready. Rowan topped right into him and while he grunted against the pain of it, he still caught her and then cradled her to him.
"You said the strings warn you of danger, don't you think they should have told you that you'd fall off the table if you dropped there?" he asked her.
"Bold of you to assume that this wasn't what I wanted." She said it with a smirk on her face and Steve stared up at her with such a large grin on his face.
"Ah so you wanted to end up in my lap hmm?"
"Of course. I always want to be in your lap."
They moved straight to kissing which none of them wanted to see. So, Danny slapped his shoulder to both get them to stop and to regain their attention.
"Kay so that's dropping, let's see a pull then."
Rowan, still looking at Steve, absently reached out her hand, seemingly grabbed something only she could see and then tugged. There was a static pop and then sitting on the table with them was the plate of pancakes from the kitchen.
"Hot damn. So that's how you got the plane onto the beach," Chin said and Rowan nodded.
"That was uh… a bigger feat than a plate. The bigger the object the more energy I have to put into it. I was out of it for the rest of the day. Freaked Wo Fat out entirely, had to tell him what I did and then he yelled at me…"
"Whoa, hold on, he yelled at you?"
"Oh sure, for starters you ripped me right into the void when you got shot. I struggled of course but you eventually got me to the plane. And he's always been worried about something pulling me into the void, it was worse when he realized you did it. But now I know that's cause he didn't want me to find out about all the lies…"
Steve sighed and rolled his eyes. Though he did note that she had not come to him, but he had pulled her to him.
"Well that was interesting. So does the pulling thing work with other people or just you two love birds?" Grover asked.
Rowan nodded once more, reaching out for something and tugging. Once more there was a static pop and that time a man was standing on the lanai with them. Shirtless and in nothing but boxers. He had shaving foam on his face and a razer in his hand.
They would have thought that this would have freaked the person out, but he didn't seem the least bit phased. He turned a frustrated look onto Rowan. "Really, Ro? Is this an emergency?"
"No, just a demo and you adapt best."
Sin Nombre in all his glory glared at them, well at Rowan mostly. "I had a razor in my hand Ro, and I'm not decent send me back," he snapped and with a flick of her wrist there was a static pop once more and he vanished.
"And that was throwing," she said. "I will no doubt get a call later about that."
They all sort of exchanged glances and then Chin said: "I think we wanna hear how you figured out all of this."
"Alright well… I had a bit of an incident in Colombia and Wo Fat was made aware that I had… you know, powers. And uh, you know he took it rather well, the whole store of me…"
"Wait… he knows everything?"
"I had a full void incident in front of him. Like orange electric, portal opening, no control, void incident I couldn't just brush it off."
"But he knows…"
"About the void and the alternate reality and the TV show. Yep. And so does Con."
Great so both of them were on the same page now. Steve couldn't help but bea little annoyed, because… well… he still felt like those secrets were his. But she was right. If she went full void with him, he would have wanted answers, just like Steve did.
"Anyway… yeah, when I told him that I don't really have control he was determined to help me get it."
Danny turned to Steve. "Wow how smart of him." Steve just scowled back at him.
"So we went to Toronto and we put me in a room with my dad, and we proved I was from an alternate reality and then he started teaching me how to control it."
"And you obviously got it," Kono said.
Rowan nodded enthusiastically. "Yep, turns out my powers are attached to my emotions, once I figured out how to harness those emotions, I could use my powers no problem. Granted I still had some issues…"
"Like what?"
"Well I couldn't use them offensively, only defensively. It took a while but we figured that out too."
"Yeah how did your dad manage that? He throw something at you?" Danny asked.
"Well he tried, but it didn't work. I didn't quite care about stopping stuff coming at me," she said and that got Steven's attention again, that furrowed brow was once again pointed in her direction. "He shot a crossbow at Wo and I did that deflecting trick. First time it actually worked."
"You told them that you don't care about you, didn't you?" Steve accused his voice low. They all knew how Rowan felt, that protecting others mattered more than protecting herself.
"I may have mentioned it…"
"Get to the part where you get shot," Danny urged and they all seconded that demand.
Rowan sighed. "Alright, well once I got good at deflecting and attacking my dad wanted to do a bigger experiment which involved four different mounted guns firing at me at separate times. One first, and then two and so on," she said.
Already Steve's heart had gone still in his chest, just thinking about it. "And Wo Fat agreed to that?"
"Well, no, but I wanted to do it and he went along with it. Con was in the room with me when it went down, he's the most adaptable to… well everything I do, so he was set to step in if necessary."
Yeah, she had mentioned that Wo Fat had taken it upon himself to do everything he could to make Rowan happy, which meant catering to her every whim. So, it made sense that he'd not want her participating in that experiment but ended up letting her do it anyway.
"Anyway, I was deflecting four bullets at once and I got distracted and… I got hit in the shoulder."
There was silence after that. All of them turned from Rowan to Steve. Rowan was pointedly avoiding their stares while Steve's eyes bored into her, that vein in his jaw pulsing away.
"And then what?"
"Well I don't know. I was knocked out. Con and Wo dealt with it. From what they told me, I wrapped the room up in a vortex, pulled Steve to me, and he wrapped me up in strings and when he left I wasn't shot anymore."
Steve pulled out his phone again, no doubt to dial Wo Fat. Which was made evident the second the call connected.
"Don't groan at me," he said once Wo Fat answered. "She just told me the shooting and me story and she doesn't know what happened but apparently you and Sin Nombre do. So talk." He paused and then turned to her. "He's asking me which time again, how many times did you get shot and have me save you?"
"Only two, you're asking about the UofT Lab," she said.
"UofT Lab," he said into the phone and then listened. It was peppered with uh-huhs, and huhs and then one final: "I didn't dream that?" He waited for Wo Fat's response and then sighed. "And the second time was Hawaii? There isn't another incident like that? No? Good, what about Colombia. Why won't she tell me about Colombia?"
When Wo didn't give him a good answer he turned back to Rowan. "Ro, why won't you tell me about Colombia?"
"I thought that story would embarrass you," she said mostly into the phone.
"Embarrass him? As in Wo Fat? What the hell happened in Colombia?" Danny cried.
"Great he says he's not going to tell me either," he said hanging up the phone as aggressively as he could. Steven then turned his eyes to Rowan. "What happened in Colombia. Did you get shot?"
"No, no one was hurt except the bad guys and Wo's pride."
"Did someone take him down? Other than me?"
"I've already said too much," she whispered dramatically and that signalled that the conversation was done. They let her showcase her powers a little bit more, she let them ask a few more questions but that was about it.
These new powers, they all knew about them and had seen them as an evolution. She was already doing freaky shit, now she was just getting really good at it now. In their eyes, Rowan hadn't changed not really. She had grown, but she was still their Rowan and her powers would still, and always be used to help and protect them.
And now, even Steve was seeing it that way. So, you know, he had grown too.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Getting Rowan to talk about the more dangerous points of her year away from him was like trying to crack open a walnut. He didn't want to but he kept taking a hammer to it and instead of getting the full story he got bits and pieces that he'd have to piece back together to get the full picture.
She was trying very hard to stay on a timeline but she had so many holes and so many things that happened to her early on that affected them later. He just kept asking question after question and derailing her story. Here were some of the things he knew.
He knew that there were other guys that Rowan had been with during her year away. One for each city place she visited and each and every guy had a song. So there were seven songs in total. He knew barely anything about these men, just that they existed and they had all slept with her. There were 7 in total. One in Paris, the same guy for Venice and Berlin, one in Colombia, one in Canada, one in England, one in California, and one on the cruise ship. The men that he was aware of was Harry Ford, who admitted it to Steven himself, JC in Colombia, Steve guessed and Rowan admitted he was right, and then the captain of the cruise ship was the other he knew about. That too was a guess, based solely on the tone of voice he had when giving Rowan's information up. He now knew that it was because Wo Fat accosted him for following her around and not getting the hint. But she did mention that California guy was the dearest, the one she almost contemplated staying with.
God forbid Steven ever learn that man's name.
He knew that something bad had gone down in Paris. Though he didn't know what.
He knew that something void related had gone down in Colombia, and that it somehow made Wo Fat look bad. To the point where she refused to tell Steve about it to save her brother's pride.
He knew that in Canada, she had met each of her family members and none of their interactions ended well. He also knew that in Canada, she had bumped into the Stepanov's and that was where their feud started anew.
He knew that between leaving Canada and showing up in England there was a point in time where no one knew where she was, and she seemed reluctant to tell him what was going on during that time. Or where she was.
He knew she wouldn't talk about getting arrested in England, nor would she talk about why Wo Fat and Conejo thought crashing a concert was a good way to cheer her up, or why she needed cheering up in the first place.
And all of that was maddening because he merely wanted to know what had hurt her so he knew not to do it again.
He tried not to constantly ask her about the things that she left out or avoided but they weighed heavily on his mind. So when Jack Dalton called again, said he was in Hawaii and waned help with a case he took it, simply to have some sort of distraction.
He had brought Jack and his friend Angus MacGyver to the Palace to use their resources but so far, they had done everything but.
Jack and him had shot the shit and Angus seemed busy peering into offices and looking around as if he was waiting for something. They had been trying to not bother Chin who was in his office trying to deal with his own paperwork, but Steve could see that he was eyeing Angus with a confused stare because the man kept pacing in front of his office. Jack shot Angus a meaningful look and then cleared his throat.
"So uh… did you ever find that girl?"
"Rowan?" Steve asked as if there had been another girl he had been hunting the way he had hunted for Rowan. When Jack nodded Steve smiled. "Yes, I did. And uh… she was the Rory girl you were looking into by the way."
Jack shot another look at Angus. "Go figure, huh? That brother of hers really did number on her file, then."
"Yes, he changed the DNA and the finger prints on me so I couldn't track her down when they started travelling again."
"Okay so you found her… and then what you and her are…"
"Back together, yeah," Steve said his eyes narrowing. He didn't understand why this was important. Didn't understand why Jack kept looking at Angus like that. "Why uh… why are you interested? You're not here to arrest her, are you?"
Jack shook his head. "Naw, we were just wondering. You seem better and I figured it was because of the girl or at least, a girl."
Steve half smiled he was much better now that Rowan was back in his life. Yeah, they had issues but for the most part he was happy with Rowan. Though it probably should have surprised him that someone who only had one phone call with him could notice the difference between then and now.
"So, uh… tell me who you're looking for."
Jack nodded going to the smart table to pull up the information while Angus pulled out his phone. "I uh… I just need to make a call, I'll be right back."
Steve watched him go, not quite liking the vibe around him. He hadn't said anything, really, but Steve didn't like how his eyes seemed to light up whenever Rowan came up. He didn't like what was happening, there was some sort of ulterior motive for them being here. And he guessed it would have something to do with Rowan.
So while Jack talked to him about some arms dealer they were trying to track, Steve tried to pay attention, but he couldn't. He kept glancing to the door, but he couldn't see where he had gone.
They were talking, him and Jack, for a few minutes before he heard a squeal of excitement in the same shape and tone as Rowan's excited squeals. Steve knew those off by heart, it took only a few unsuspecting nibbles to a certain part of her neck and they would come tumbling from her lips. He unreasonably felt like those squeals belonged only to him.
When he turned towards the sound he watched his Rowan jump into Angus' arms. Now why the hell would she be so happy to see him?
"Oh shit," Jack said a sort of half smile cocking onto his lips. "Would have thought she'd still be holding a grudge over that arrest. Guess getting back with you cured her too."
Steve found himself conflicted. On the one hand, to hear they arrested her annoyed him because Jack has said that he didn't have Rory/Rowan in custody. But to hear that he had been the cure to whatever had inflicted her during the time Jack knew her, made him happy. Selfishly he liked that they had suffered from the same illness that had only been cured by finding one another again. On the other hand, the anger he had for Wo Fat flamed for a moment at the remembrance that Rowan was just as unhappy as him during that year they were apart, for no reason.
After a few moments, Angus and Rowan were still in their embrace and Steven decided that he didn't like that. He took a few steps away from the table and towards them watching Angus finally put Rowan's feet back on the ground and then his girl was in the office coming towards him. She approached Steve with a sparkle in her eyes but didn't throw herself at him the way she had jumped on Angus. And that made Steven angry.
"Hey baby, Angus just told me you're helping them with a case?" she asked and Steve nodded. "What about our lunch plans?"
"If you'd like to stay," Angus said appearing behind her. "I'd love to take her to lunch so we can catch up."
Yeah Steve didn't like that either. "I do have to stay," he started noting that Rowan's smile faded a bit when he said that. "But I don't like that idea either. I'm still not sure if they're here for you… wouldn't want him to arrest you again."
"Oh Angus didn't arrest me, Jack did," she said and then leant past Steven to wave a hello to Jack. She then faced Steven again. "And besides, they needed the location of a nuke Wo sold. You guys got him, right?"
"Thanks to your intel, yes, we did," Angus answered. "Thanks for that."
"No problem. Turns out Wo didn't even care, he got his payout and had no real interest in the guy after that," she said absent, she then turned back to Angus. "Is Steve right though. Are you here for more intel? Because if you do arrest me Angus, I will make good on my original threat."
"No need to burry me anywhere, Ro, I'd simply like to catch up. I haven't seen you in what…? two months now?"
"Burry him?" Steve asked softly and Rowan had his attention immediately.
"Oh yes, when he first approached me, I called him out on being an undercover agent right away. When we started our friendship, however, I told him that if he arrested me, I'd burry him so far in the ground the heat from the earth's core would incinerate him. The only reason he got out of it was because Wo wasn't in California when it happened and Jack was the one that arrested me without Angus' knowledge."
"Wow, what a loop hole," Angus muttered but Steve still felt a little… uneasy.
"Would it be alright, Steven? If I went to lunch with him? Since you're busy and all," she said to him.
Did he really want Rowan to miss out on lunch plans, again, because he had a case? No. But he didn't want her going with Angus either. But he had promised himself, and her that he would be different. And Rowan had always had eyes for him, and only him so he could trust her… right?
"Alright fine, but if he starts asking you stuff about Wo, get out, cause I'm still not sold that they're not here to arrest you," he said and then Rowan did throw herself at him. She kissed him once, and then a second time, and Steve was certain to have her linger so Angus was more than certain that Rowan really was with him.
"Don't worry," she said once she had dropped to her feet. "He'd be silly to do anything with Con still on the island."
"Wait… wait a second, he's still here, why?"
"Hmm?"
"You just said Con was still on the island."
"You can't call him Con, you have to call him Sin Nombre," Rowan said instead of clarifying. "Enjoy your case babe."
And then she and Angus were leaving. Steve watched them go, taking in the way Angus seemed to know to just offer her an arm for her to hold and the sort of smirk he shot over his shoulder before Rowan and him were about to turn the corner and disappear.
Yeah something wasn't right.
"You're uh… your based in Califronia," he whispered and Jack nodded to him. "And how did you two meet her again?"
"She touched down in LAX after escaping MI6, Mac was put on her to see if she could connect him to Wo Fat. Didn't arrest her until Wo Fat sold a nuke to someone in California, though."
Yeah… California was the guy she was going to stay with. He had a feeling if he asked Jack outright, he'd lie to him, but he was starting to get a hunch about why these two were really there. He told Jack to go wild with their smart computer before heading towards his office to make a phone call. Just a little recon.
He no longer had to pull up an app to get a hold of Wo Fat, Rowan had given him a number that would connect him with her brother. She did it after finding out he contacted Wo to get protection for her. Thought it might be easier for him. He wasn't sure if she had told Wo about it.
But when he answered with: "What do you want McGarrett?" he knew she did.
"She's alright," he said in form of an answer and got nothing but a sigh from Wo Fat, though he wasn't certain if it was one of annoyance or relief.
"If I knew you were going to call this often, I wouldn't have given you access to my private line."
"Yes, yes, I know. I'm bothering you but I have a question."
"You always do."
That was true too but he had really good questions and both Rowan and Wo had a habit of lying to him. And now, it seemed, a tendency to cover for one another.
"She had a guy in California. What was his name?"
"God, I don't know."
"What do you mean, you don't know? She said she told you everything!"
"She did, but I didn't make it a habit to keep up with Rowan's paramours. Con would know."
"Then get him and ask him, please."
"Can't. He refused to come back from Hawaii. Doesn't seem to trust you with her, Steven. I could call him and ask but it might take me a while to get through."
"No, I need answers now," Steve snapped and for a second Wo Fat was silent.
"Why do you care so much about this now?"
"Cause I have a hunch, he was law enforcement right?"
"Uh… yeah. Why… do you think he's trying to arrest her again?"
"Did he arrest her the last time?"
"Well that's what broke them up," Wo Fat said and a little bit of credence was added to Steve's hunch.
"Look, can you tell me who he is, cause if it's who I think it is, we've got a problem."
He could tell that Wo Fat didn't want to snitch on Rowan like this, since he no doubt knew that Rowan didn't want to tell Steve the name of her other lovers.
"Alright, well from what I do remember about him he worked for the Phoenix foundation. I'll always remember that because she sprung him on us in Disneyland and I recognized him by his fancy last name, barely had to research him to find out who he worked for."
So he had a fancy last name but Wo couldn't remember what it was? Damn was he getting old or something? "What do you mean?"
"God I should know this. It was so distinctive. Uh… who's the head of that Foundation now?"
"Phoenix Foundation? Uh… hmm… I think… Uh… James MacGyver, why?"
"Ah Right, of course. MacGyver, don't know how I forgot him."
"Okay, great, but why does that matter? You planning to whack him? Do I need to intervene?"
"Course not. You wanted to know who she was dating…" "—She was dating James MacGyver?"
The man was ancient, yes Rowan went for older men but come on, that guy was geriatric. On the other end of the phone Wo Fat laughed.
"Of course not. She was dating his son. Can't remember his name, she called him Mackie though."
Steve paused for a second as everything lined up and he realized exactly what had just happened.
He now knew exactly why Jack had called him back then. He wasn't calling because he was going to arrest her, he called because his friend was dating her and he no doubt wanted dirt on her. And that, no doubt, was why they were here. They knew Rowan had returned to him and Angus wanted to see her for some reason. And if Steve was a gambling man he'd say it was to get Rowan back. Because no one passed up on having Rowan Pierce and he knew first hand just how much of a hole his Rowan left when she exited one's life.
He headed back out to the main office mainly to glare at Jack and because he was planning to leave anyway. "His name is Angus MacGyver."
Well that got Jack's attention. He turned to Steve surprised and asked quite loudly who he was talking to, but Steve ignored him.
"Yep that was it. Why?"
"You're telling me that I let Rowan go to lunch with her ex?"
For a moment Wo Fat was silent, Steve swore he could hear the man's smile on the other end. "Is uh… is he on the island?"
"No shit, Wo!"
"I thought you said he wanted to arrest her?"
"Well I have a different theory now."
At that Wo Fat actually did laugh at him. "Well you might want to go get her. Uh… Mackie was the one she wanted to stay with…"
"I KNOW!" Steve thundered
"Yeah, thought he might be the one she grew to love the way she loved you…"
Everything after that went a little hazy God damn it, he already knew that this guy was the one she wanted to stay with, why did he have to pile on? He wouldn't even let Wo finish. He hung up the phone and turned on Jack.
"When I get back here, I'm going to kill you! Chin! Don't let him leave" he cried before turning and sprinting for the door. He needed to get to Rowan as soon as he could.
