Chapter 313

Rowan was sitting on the couch when Steve dropped the laptop in front of her. It wasn't the first time he had opened up the drop box to show her the pictures Wo Fat had stored there of their year abroad. She kept reminding him that they were on her phone so she knew almost all of these pictures by heart, but him opening up the drop box meant that he had a question he wanted to ask.

"What's up Steve?"

"Well… can we talk about the Paris incident now?" he asked. A flash of red coated memories rose up and her back straightened immediately as she tried to push them back down. He took in her reaction and he sighed: "Alright not now…"

"Look… It was bad, okay?" Rowan said. "It was bad and I still get upset thinking about it. When I'm better… when it doesn't make me feel dirty every time I think about it, I'll tell you. Okay?"

Something crossed his features. Worry, disgust? She didn't know. But it didn't stay long and he clearly shrugged it away and let it go.

"Fair," he said. "How about we clarify some other things instead?"

"Like what?"

"Well… why did Wo Fat have to waltz with you constantly?"

"It wasn't constantly…"

"Yes, but why him? Why is it always him… you know it's very… uh… intimate."

"Kay, well, for the cruise Con wasn't on the ship and I unno… it was nice to be waltzed like that every once and a while. Besides, me and Con were either line dancing and dancing all Latino which Wo Fat always said worse…"

"Latino dance…"

"It basically sex standing up."

"Okay yeah, maybe that's worse."

Rowan slapped the laptop shut. "Kay we're good now?"

"No," Steve said softly. When Rowan pinned him with a dry glare he sighed. "A lot happened that year, there's a lot I feel like a missed. A lot that you're keeping from me."

"If I'm not telling you, my darling, then it's for good reason," she reminded him.

"Rowan, we agreed not to do that anymore, we agreed you'd be open with me and I wouldn't be judgemental or react bad, but you still won't tell me things…"

"Steven," Rowan growled. "When I'm ready I will tell you, but right now… I'm not ready, so can you drop it? Please?"

Steve nodded and then settled into the couch beside her. He was going to spend the day with her, a nice day off. The plan was to watch the game and snuggle. But his phone went off.

Steve groaned but picked it up. He was only on the phone for only a couple of minutes but then he was off the couch.

"I'm sorry, babe, I've caught a murder," he said before swooping down to kiss her deeply. "I'm going to have to go. Are you okay with that?"

Like she had any choice in the matter. Still she told him it was okay and he nodded. She watched him go, being sure not to follow him upstairs as he was no doubt going to get changed. She knew if she went up with him, she would simply jump on him and distract him from leaving. Which wouldn't be fair.

When he came back down, he was in cargo pants and a dark grey shirt. He kissed her one more time and then he was gone.

When she was certain he was gone she pulled up her laptop and unhid the folders that she had hidden in case Steve ever went through her laptop. Sooner or later she'd have to tell him what she did during those months he called her missing months. Yes it would change how he viewed her but he wasn't going to let it go. She would just have to hope that he didn't stop loving her once he found out.

Steve was having one hell of a day. For starters, he showed up at the crime scene to find a dead body had fallen out of the sky and into a house, and second dead body was laying on the ground, having not fallen, or been damaged by first dead body when it hit the house, but instead had been shot.

It didn't take long but they soon found out that the first dead body was an DEA agent. He had been shot and thrown out of the plane. The guy who had shot him, shot the pilot and parachuted out. He then shot the only witness to his landing, the home owner and their second body.

When the DEA finally made it to the Palace they had more information to give him. The man who had done all of this was Hector Frontera who was California's Cartel representative in the far East. Agent Evers had been undercover with him, and they were coming to Hawaii to meet with Frontera's US counterpart, Armando Sanchez.

DEA had been on site, ready to arrest Frontera when the plane landed, but he killed everyone on board and then bailed out. They figured that to mean that he knew about the upcoming arrest and had bailed to avoid it. This also meant that the DEA had a leak and along with wanting to find Frontera, they wanted to figure out who the leak was.

When Frontera went missing, he had 12 million in cash and this was apparently to fund a new drug pipeline across Europe, but they figured now he'd be using it to disappear. It was then that Steve found out that Wo Fat apparently already had control of a pipeline across Europe and they expected him to not be happy with the cartel's push into his territory.

It was the way that they said it that made Steve feel like they had brought it up because they knew he was dating Rowan. They no doubt just wanted to know if Wo Fat had anything to do with what just happened, probably because they didn't want to believe they had a mole. And that was an important question that he would have to ask Rowan later when no one else was around.

Steve ignored the implied question about Rowan's involvement and told them that the best course of action was to find Armando Sanchez and ask him. They had given a location and Steve and Danny went to get him and of course he chose to run. And he was not making this chase easy.

They had cornered he asshole in a parking garage and he decided to run up five flights, except instead of using the stairs he was using the ramp dodging the cars that were trying to go past with Danny and Steve following him. Danny, of course, lagging behind to sass cars that were getting in their way while trying to leave.

They got to the very top and found him shimmying down a pipe to escape them. Steve was in the process of climbing up when Danny intervene.

"Oh, oh, oh!" he cried grabbing Steve and tugging him down.

"What?"

"Alright, let me just remind you. Six weeks ago, you were in the hospital near death, okay?"

Steve climbed back up and positioned himself on the pipe so he could shimmy down too. Danny reminded him of that all the time, it was no big surprise to him, he just didn't know why it mattered right now when their perp was getting away.

"You remind me every hour," he snapped.

"I think you're exaggerating.

"Okay, every minute."

"Fine, forget it. Go ahead, I give up," Danny cried for what had to be the millionth time since Steve had gone back on active duty.

"You said that yesterday when you found out I went for a swim," he reminded him. A big thanks to Rowan for outing him like that. Getting the lecture from her, then Nahele and then Danny had not made for a fun morning for him. And now, because of this bullshit, they were going to loose their perp.

"Who goes for a swim after a liver transplant?" Danny cried and then pointed at him. "You! You know why? Cause you're an idiot!"

Steve was done with this. "You… I gotta go. Can I go?"

"Please?" Danny cried practically shoving him down the pipe. "Great. Okay, Spiderman, I'll see you down there."

Then, while Steve climbed down and gave chase, Danny went to the elevator. He waited patiently listening to the elevator music as Steve chased Sanchez back down that ramp except he was in a stolen car and Steve was struggling to catch up.

Danny, of course, got down to the ground floor quicker, he got out of the elevator and watched a lap of Steve chasing that car and shook his head. The guy was a putz. He was going to put himself back into the hospital and both of them were going to have to listen to Rowan bitch and it was going to be all Steve's fault.

Danny got in front of the car and then shot at it. As he predicted Sanchez chose to stop. And that was how brains triumphed over Steve's stupid brawn.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Once they got Sanchez back to the palace, Steve and Danny were ready to interrogate. Usually it didn't take them that long to crack bad guys, and today they really didn't have the time to dither. The clock was ticking and Frontera could get away easily.

And under no circumstances was he going to ask Rowan for help in front of the DEA.

They had been going at Sanchez for a couple of minutes and he kept saying the same thing.

"I have no idea where Frontera is."

Yeah except they knew he was lying.

"You know, in my experience, usually when, uh… when somebody who looks like you, fancy shirt, expensive suit, nice haircut, tells me that he can't help me, than I think that he is lying," Danny told him.

Frontera seemed far from phased. "It's the truth."

"It's the truth…"

"Danny," Steve interjected.

"Yeah?"

"Come here for a minute."

They walked as far away from the guy as he could and then said: "What's up."

"Just pretend to disagree with me for a minute," Steve mumbled, keeping his voice low on purpose.

"Shouldn't be very difficult, but why?"

The plan was simple. Steve and Danny were going to pretend to argue, he was going to pull his gun, Danny was going to pretend to stop him and hopefully they'd scare the absolute crap out of Sanchez and then he would crack.

They didn't even get to that point. Steve had only pulled his gun once, Danny had shoved him and then the door opened and Rowan came in. The second he saw her that gun was put away. Goddamn it what did she want now? But as soon as she flashed him that pretty little smile of hers, he was a less angry with her.

"I know you're busy but I was bored so I brought us lunch and I thought that we could eat it in your office. Any chance I can steal you away?"

Steve turned to tell her that unless this guy started talking he wasn't going anywhere. He glanced at Sanchez and her eyes followed Steve's gaze to the chair and then smiled.

"Oh hello! I know you…" Poor Sanchez had gone white just staring at her. Rowan snapped her fingers. "Dang it, sorry I'm usually better with names. Hmm, what was it? Armando, right? That sounds right."

She took one step forward and he suddenly let out an inhume screech of: "LA BRUJA!" and she stepped back. Her eyes wide with horrified surprise.

Frontera turned to Steven. "I'll tell you anything you want just keep that girl away from me!" he cried and Steve turned back to Rowan.

"Uh… what was that?" he asked.

"Yeah, why is that guy calling you a witch?" Danny added. Fuck was that what that had meant?

Rowan's eyes had gone ice blue, she looked from Danny to Steve and then back to Sanchez. "You tell them anything about Colombia and I will literally incinerate you."

"I won't. I wouldn't. Just please. Please!"

Okay now Rowan was just plain terrorizing him. Steve glanced to Danny who took Rowan out of the room but Frontera didn't start talking until Danny came back.

"Okay, so you don't want her in the room?" Steve asked and the man nodded. "Then start talking. Where is Frontera."

"On my children I don't know."

"Okay, Danny bring her back in," Steve said and Danny only had to half turn and the guy changed his mind.

"I don't know. I don't. But I know a person who would know…"

"Yeah? Would this be the same person who told Frontera that Evers was DEA?"

Sanchez nodded.

The name he gave them lead to Agent Raine, she had been there from the beginning and somewhere a long the line she had switched sides. Agent Raine not only knew where Frontera was, she had him in her house. When he saw Five-0 sneaking up, he shot her in the head and then fled. Of course with Steve chasing. He was so desperate to get away he dropped the bag of cash.

Minutes after that they figured out that a cartel hit team was on the island and looking for him and that they got to him first. Now it was about finding him before that cartel killed him, or, at the very least figuring out how they got on the island.

This left Steve with the terrible option of having to ask Rowan if she knew about this cartel and how to get to them. He didn't even know why he was surprised that she knew or that she could get them in.
