Chapter 323

It was Halloween and they had gotten a call to the most haunted house on Oahu. Someone had been murdered there.

Steve had tried to scare Danny with the story of what had happened there, but Danny wasn't easily spooked. And, despite knowing Rowan and her powers, he had assumed that there was no way for paranormal stuff to exist. Mediums were con artists. But he believed Rowan was psychic.

Daniel Williams was one hell of a conundrum.

At first everything was normal. Max was back from sabbatical, dressed as John Wick for Halloween. Other then him dropping the bombshell that he and Sabrina had gotten married and neither of them had told any of the Five-0 ohana that, things were the same with Max. They even got onto the topic of costumes, more aptly why Steve wasn't wearing one since everyone had gotten the pictures of Rowan and Nahele in their themed costume.

Max incorrectly assumed that Steve was left out again, as he so often was when it came to Nahele and Rowan, but that was not the case this time. Steve had made sure he wasn't included, cause he thought it was stupid. It had started a whole argument because Rowan hadn't understood why he wouldn't want to do a family themed costume with them but he had put his foot down. He didn't like matchy couples and he wasn't going to be a matchy family. Also she had sprung it on him last minute so if it was really all that important she should have told him before hand.

Neither Nahele nor Rowan were talking to him right now.

But things kept getting weirder and weirder with this case, and that was more important than his girlfriend and their kid being mad at him right now. Like for starters, their victim called 911 to report an intruder, they get there and the place is locked up, the alarm is still on, no signs of forced entry and their victim is just dead.

Her phone call, she doesn't say he/she, she says it which was a very strange thing for someone to do. And she wasn't injured, by the looks of it she was scared to death. Then her assistant said that her employer was convinced the place was haunted, and that she would have thought her boss was crazy too but she kept hearing and seeing things in the house too. This all added up to this place being majorly haunted and their victim being killed by a ghost.

That would make it very hard for Steven to arrest them.

Their victim, Marjorie Webb, had upgraded her security over the past two weeks. One of those upgrades included a 16-channel camera system being installed. From there they got a video that matched the 911 call and it was of a spectral figure in a black cloak fading in and out of reality.

Kind of like the way Rowan could do with her powers. Kind of like the time she had created a maze to torture Gabriel.

So, Steve did the only thing he could do to get some kind of lead on what was happening in this house.

He called his girlfriend.

"Why do I need a babysitter, I'm 14?!" Grace hollered. She very rarely yelled at her dad, but it was becoming more and more frequent now that she was a teenager and she had realized how controlling and insane her father was.

"Okay listen to me. If you recall last year, you deliberately, deliberately disobeyed your parents and you snuck off to a party, okay?"

Yeah and now he was getting Rowan to babysit who had been very supportive of last year's secret party and would probably let her go to the party. So… what was that logic?

"So, this year, you, uh, you serve your sentence. The babysitter is just there to make sure you do your time, okay?"

So, Rowan was going to be her warden? Yeah, did he not know who he was leaving her with?

"So, I'm under house arrest?"

"No, you're not under house arrest. You are free to go trick-or-treating with your little brother."

"This is cruel and unusual punishment."

"You think this is cruel you should see some of the stuff Uncle Steve does to your Aunt Rowan when he's mad at her," Danno said with a cheesy grin that made Grace want to vomit and had her Uncle Steve shouting: "Hey!" from another part of the room.

"I don't do that stuff anymore, Danny…" Steve called. "I haven't arrested her in…"

"I was thinking more about how you got mad at Rowan last month and you wore nothing but cargo pants and flip flops for a full week just to piss her off."

"Oh right, yeah, I did do that, she said she never wants to see my bare feet again," he said. "Which is weird cause like… I didn't think… do they really look that bad?"

"Daaaaddd?!" Grace groaned and he turned back to her. "Hey, don't do the crime if you can't do the time," he said and then the doorbell went. "Doorbell, sounds like that's your aunt Ro."

And it was, because she had already let herself in. God knows why she felt the need to ring the doorbell when she had a key but she had.

Rowan breezed on in looking both ridiculous and somehow hot in the outfit she was in. She had dressed up as Theodora from Oz the Great and Powerful, post transformation. She had painted her face, neck, chest and hands green. She had the actual pointy nose and chin. She was wearing the black dress and the whole hat ensemble quite nicely. She even had the black tights, the fingerless gloves and the broom.

She cackled menacingly, and quite well, and cried: "Fly my pretties!"

Which was when Nahele shuffled forward. He was dressed as Finley, no monkey face, but he did have the blue bellhop outfit and the matching hat. He even had the messenger bag across his shoulders, the furry brown pants, he had the wings and the tail and the matching monkey ears. He had gone all out. Or more aptly Rowan had gone all out and then forced it on him.

"Come on, mom," he said with a groan and Rowan came off out of her pose to glare at him.

"Hey! It's not for me its for the kid," she said. And with a begrudging sigh, he did his very best monkey impression and went to chase her little brother Charlie around the room.

"Put the great and ridiculous Rowan on the phone please," Danny ordered.

"It is I, the most fabulous amazing wickedest…" Grace tossed Rowan the phone which she just barely caught and stormed off to throw herself down on the couch. "I swear I thought she liked me."

"It's not you, she turned 14 and her moods went everywhere, I swear."

"Kay kinda makes me fell better… so what's going on?"

"Well I sent a replacement for you…"

"Well, what the hell? I just got here! I can't have done anything wrong yet!"

"You didn't. Steve needs you…" "—Steve doesn't need me he would have called if he needed me…" "He did…"

But by then Rowan had gotten her phone out. "Oh, he did call me." She then returned her attention back to Danny. "Well damn, what does he want now? He's not in cargo pants and flip flops again, is he? Cause I already dealt with it for a week I'm not doing it again."

"Yeah I heard about the argument over the costumes. But uh… no, this is about case stuff and I can promise you there are no flipflops. He is in cargo pants though. Anyway, I sent a replacement and then you're gonna come here, sound good?"

"Ugh fine."

She then hung up the phone and tossed it back to Grace who was now on the couch. Nahele looked far from pleased by this.

"You're actually leaving?" he asked. "But I'm purposely missing my party so your costume will make sense when you're trick-or-treating which is stupid because you're the Wicked Witch of the West, and it's not our family costume if Da… Steve… refuses to dress up as Oz."

Well that was just great, she was going to miss the party but Nahele was getting to go? Granted he hadn't done anything wrong and wasn't grounded or anything but it still annoyed her.

"Okay, calm down, he's probably just being annoying," Rowan told him. "He'll have me come down, ask me some stupid questions he could have asked me on the phone and then I'll be back before you know it. Then we'll go trick-or-treating and you can go to your party, but not you Grace, I've been told I'll lose Auntie privileges if I let you go to that party and you don't even want to know what I'll do if you try to sneak out."

From the couch Grace just huffed but Rowan ignored her and turned to Charlie. "And what are you dressing up as again? A Teddy Bear?"

"NO!" the little boy cried.

"No?" Rowan echoed. "Okay go get it, let's see what you're going to be."

Charlie ran off and almost as soon as he was gone the doorbell rang again. Rowan opened it to Jerry who was wearing a classic decapitation costume.

"Can you help me, I seem to have lost my head," he said which caused Rowan to snort.

"Sure, come on in, maybe one of my flying monkeys will help you." She turned to Nahele who was nose deep in his phone who just grunted at her and she shook her head. "Teenagers."

"That's alright," Jerry said following Rowan in. "I've got big plans for tonight. We're gonna make Halloween cookies, carve pumpkins, and of course, go trick-or-treating."

"Sounds fun, Danny told you'll I'll be out for a bit?"

"Yeah, but I got this."

Charlie came skipping out from his room with his costume, caught sight of Jerry and immediately started screaming. Rowan blinked her eyes looked between the two of them and said: "Yeah you totally got this. No mischief while I'm gone my pretties!"

The two teenagers just grunted at her and Rowan just shook her head.

And then she just left them there. My god, this night was gonna blow.

Any story that started with "Naw, he just psychologically scarred me for life, is all," just had to be a good one. Which was why, after Eric came in with an attitude they all had to ask what was up. when he dropped that they knew they had to get the story. Because, besides the amazing opening line, Eric looked frustrated and Danny was grinning ear to ear. So, Steve, Chin and Grover all gathered around Eric and Danny to hear the tale.

"Halloween, 1995, I was ten. It was the first time I was able to trick-or-treat without my parents. So me and some friends decided to dress up as Power Rangers, which is already embarrassing enough because I drew the short straw and had to go as the pink one. It was all hunky-dory until we were a few houses in and we notice we're being followed by these creeps with masks. So we run, they chase us, it ends up with me getting separated from my fellow Rangers, surrounded by a bunch of maniacs with knives and hatchets."

Grover was already chuckling. "So, I'm guessing your Uncle Danny was, uh, one of said maniacs."

Danny was already nodding and grinning. "It was pretty great. You should have seen it, he lost his mind."

"Ha! I also lost control of my bladder. Took me to high school to shake the name Pee Pee Russo."

Steve turned back to Danny after that story. "You say I'm sadistic, you're sick."

"That's nothing," Rowan said startling everyone. They all jumped and found that she had appeared behind Steve, no where near the front door that Eric had literally just come in through. She stared up at them blankly as they all stared at her and her chosen costume that she had not changed out of. She was dressed as some badass sexy version of the Wicked Witch of the West.

With a hand clasped to his chest, Grover gasped: "Jesus where did you come from?"

Rowan gestured to the clearly prop broom in her hand. "I just flew in."

Danny sighed. "Oh, she's funny."

"So, do you guys wanna hear my Halloween Prank story?" she asked. "Mine's way worse than that."

They all exchanged glances and then shrugged and then Rowan was telling a completely different kind of tale.

"So, get this. It's high school. This dumb fuck cheats on my best friend and I catch him, but he doesn't know that I know. I tell her about it, it's like two nights before Halloween we decide not to break up with him right away. We decided to get revenge. I go out, buy a burner phone, that's important for later on in the story, and a waterproof costume, ends up being a mermaid which is ironic and you'll get why soon.'

"So, like every year, this popular girl has a party at her cottage down by the lake. So, we dress up, Sarah and I, and we go to the party. And at the party I convince this guy to come down to the dock and I start confronting him about what cheating on my best friend and how I'm going to like ruin his good-boy rep. I like purposely goad this mother fucker so he hits me, right? And it's not hard because guys a pansy but I go down like I'm a soccer player at FIFA who just got clipped. And we met on the dock right, so I go straight in the water. And then I float there. I float there and I don't respond. Asshole thinks he killed me. So, he uses this big stick to drag me over and sink me and put me under the dock, I guess to hide my body or something. Anyway, he hides my 'body', then he just leaves me there."

At that point all of them were staring at her. For a second, they were sure the story was done because she had paused, but it wasn't. Rowan had just paused to take a breath.

"Anyway, while he was doing that, Sarah took all these pictures, and this was back before phones had cameras so we had an old school camera, with a night vision lens and everything. Don't ask how I got it, I had shady friends. So, I stay home all weekend and Sarah gets the pictures printed by a friend of hers. I don't go to school on Monday, so now no one has seen me since the party, and no one's found my "body". He thinks he's gotten away with killing me so far. Now, I have the burner phone, so I start texting him saying I know what you did on Halloween and blah blah blah. And Sarah starts leaving the pictures in his locker of him on the dock with me, and then him sinking me, and he's freaking out, right? Then… then… at night, I'd put my mermaid costume back on, which I had ripped up in places, put on zombie make up, drench myself with a hose and go stand outside his house right below his window. First time he saw me he fainted."

Steve was practically reeling, what the kind of story was she telling them? Did she… did she really do this?

"Anyway, we kept that up for about a week before that kid had a nervous breakdown. Went to the cops to confess what he did. They went up to the cottage to see if they could find my body, which they couldn't. Guy's screaming about how I'm haunting him. Then they went to inform my parents that I was probably dead and to ask why no one had reported me missing if I've been gone for a week. And, of course, they hadn't I was home pretending to be sick. It was a whole thing, got like arrested and everything."

"Holy shit," came out of Steve in a low whisper.

"Damn girl, I'm glad I never went to school with you."

"Yeah, I caused him major psychological trauma and I got court mandated therapy because like… I never should have thought to do that in the first place. Narrowly missed going to juvie. But no one has ever cheated on Sarah since so you know… it worked out in the end."

They all exchanged glances and Steve turned back to Danny and said again: "And you think I'm sadistic?"

"Well, fucking Hannibal Lector isn't sadistic compared to that shit, how old were you when you did that?"

"Uh… that was… grade 11? So Nahele's age now. Probably about to turn 16."

Only that young? Dear god, her mother must have had a really rough time with Rowan when she was growing up, if that was the kind of shit she was doing at 15. What were their kids going to be like? Was it bad that he sort of hoped they didn't end up like Rowan cause he wasn't sure how he could handle two of then?

Danny turned back to Eric. "Still think what I did was that bad?"

"Nope. Nope and can I say I'm very glad you didn't know Rowan back then because I would dread to think what she might have done to me," he said.

Steve snapped his hands in front of Eric's face. "Okay, Eric, I need you to tear this place apart and find out how our perp got in and out without tripping the alarms."

He nodded solemnly and wandered off and then Steve turned back to Rowan who was smiling like she didn't just tell him the most terrifying story of his life.

"You called?" she asked innocently. "Apparently you need me for something?"

This was a pivotal moment here. Because if she even so much as caught a hit of worry on his end about that story, she wouldn't tell him anything ever again. So, he was going to just gloss on past that story as if it didn't bother him that at the age of sixteen his girlfriend had successfully gas lit one of her classmates.

"Yes, I do," he said leading her to the table and then sitting her down in front of a laptop. He got the video playing and then made sure she watched the part that was important. "Look familiar?"

Rowan watched the video again and then winced and turned her face up to him. She had gone all out on the costume, she had a triangular nose and jutting chin. She looked just like a witch. Why the hell did that work on her? "I... uh… yes… I… might have used something similar to haunt Gabriel… which I'm starting to think you know about, though I don't know how."

"Your little maze of horrors, yeah," Steve snapped. "Uh... beat cop got stuck in it."

"Oh shit. Yeah," she said with a laugh. "That was fun. Would have been cool if it killed him but he had a gun and just kept shooting. Couldn't return the stolen TVs or anything which was a major bummer." She then sighed contently just thinking about it and then glanced up to all their faces. "But I didn't have anything to do with this, nor was a cop supposed to get stuck in it."

Steve had to forcibly sigh and Danny stepped up to the plate. "I think uh… I think the concern is… you know after that horrifying Halloween story you just told… that you rigged something like this up yourself, not that we thought you were a part of this murder."

"Okay," Steve said finally getting his words back. "Have we got to this part of the Year of Deceit yet?"

"Uh… no…" Rowan said. "I don't think so. That's closer to the Ironman story."

"Ironman?" Danny echoed.

"I'm thinking she means the battle suit. So that was you too?"

"It was gonna kill you, Steven," Rowan snapped. "I had to do something. Walking up to an indestructible suit without your gun, you were just lucky that tree was there."

"Wait a second, were you… were you there?" Steve asked.

Rowan narrowed her eyes at him. "I… yes… I was… why?"

"Because I could sense it. I swear, I knew you were there."

"You did turn around," Rowan said. "Looked right at us, but we were so far…"

"Whoa, wait, who were you with?"

"Con. I never did any of my Hawaii jumps with Wo, which I think is a sore point for him."

"Okay, not that this isn't cute, but can we talk about the Year of Deceit later?" Danny asked. "Ro, where did you get this stuff?"

"Uh… the projectors? We ripped off a Tech store," she said being sure to avoid Steve's eyes. "Uh… but if this place is tricked out as like a haunted house, they've probably gone to magic shops. That's a little more niche market, you know?"

That was actually a good lead. "Do we know if this place was rigged as a haunted house."

"Oh, hell yeah. I bet the projectors are just the tip of the iceberg." Steve nodded and Rowan finally stood up. "Do you think… that maybe you're going be able to join us for trick-or-treating tonight?"

Steve looked around and gestured to where they were. "I have a case Rowan. What do you expect me to do?"

She had an answer for him right away. "Take a night off, I know Nahele would appreciate it."

"I don't need the guilt trip, Ro," Steve said between clenched teeth.

"Alright, I'm sorry, are we good now, can I head back to babysitting?"

"Yeah," he said going in for a kiss but Rowan ducked him. For a moment he was worried that she was mad at him and would refuse to kiss him because of it.

"If you kiss me you're gonna be all green and I'm going to have to repaint just my lips."

Steve couldn't help but laugh in his relief. Like he cared about a little make up. And then he kissed her.

Kono and Adam were supposed to be going to Turtle Bay for some alone time. They were heading through to the backwoods when all of a sudden someone darted in front of the car. They had stopped to help the young woman. She was disorientated and covered in blood, she told them her car had crashed and her friend, Dana, was still stuck in the car, so being the good people that they were they went looking for her.

And they found her, having been taken prisoner by two men in white masks. Both Adam and Kono had managed to get the upper hand, sort of. The guy Adam had gone after had knocked him unconscious but Kono's guy was down for the count and she had his gun, which meant that she was in the winning position.

Until the first girl knocked her out with a piece of wood. Yeah should have realized that this girl was in on it.

When they woke up again, they were tied up in the back of a truck bed. When the truck stopped, they were taken out and marched to a building where they chained up and then left there.

Dana was crying, asking what was going to happen them, but Adam and Kono had no idea.

For a while they just stood there, listening to the cheering and hollering of the people outside. Of the barking of their chained-up dogs. What was going to happen to them? They were terribly out numbered, and it didn't look like they could get out of these chains that were holding their hands above their head.

But then Adam was laughing.

"What's so funny," she asked him. Because if there was a joke, she'd like to be in on it.

"I'm starting to think trouble follows you around, Mrs. Noshimuri," he said before hitting her with a smirk. She knew he wasn't blaming her then, he was just trying to be silly to lighten the mood, to keep them from being afraid.

"Oh, really?"

"I'm just saying." He paired that with a shrug before smiling at her again. "You know, nothing like this ever happened to me before I met you."

Oh really? Was that so. "I could say the same thing about you," she said shooting him her own little smirk. "On the plus side, it's never boring."

She almost wanted to tell Adam that she was almost 75% certain that if she called Rowan's name, the girl would appear. Like Bloody Mary in a mirror, except Rowan would save their butts. But then she'd have to explain Rowan's powers which she had not done with Adam yet.

The door banged open and two men came in. One with an axe, the other with nothing. The man with the Axe went for Adam and the other when for Kono. He got up close to unchain her and she lunged, biting and ripping his earlobe off. She then kicked him as hard as he could. He fell to the ground and lost the key.

Adam made a similar move, except he kicked the man with the axe sending him flying back.

While the two men recovered, Dana kicked the key to her, which she, in turn, managed to kick up into Adam's hands. He miraculously caught it. By the time he got himself undone the first guy was up, a knife in his hand, heading for Kono.

Kono managed to cry out his name, which meant the second that Adam got free he was sprinting at the first guy. He still had a chain attached to his hand and he used that to lash out at the guy knocking him right back down. He then turned to face the guy with the axe who was swinging it at Adam.

Adam used the chain to deflect, and it worked. Almost too well because it knocked the Axe right out of his hand

The axe came at her and Kono couldn't keep it in a shout of: "Rowan!" fell from her lips just as it collided with chains. Well that was her free, she hadn't needed Rowan at all.

But there was still a static hiss and then the lights above them burst and went dark. The first man, who had been getting up stopped moving.

She heard him ask: "What the hell?" and then a black portal opened up at his feet and he dropped out of sight with a scream of terror.

At that the second man actually stopped fighting Adam. Adam stopped fighting too and then the second man caught sight of something behind Kono and he staggered back.

Kono turned and she could see what was freaking him out. Someone in the shadows, green and dressed in all black and from their hands crackled balls of orange static light, but when the person started to cackle much like an evil witch the guy decided he didn't want to chance it. He turned and bolted for the door. He opened it, ran through and ended up coming in through another door, this one more to the left. When he realized what had happened, he bolted back out the door and ended up coming through the first door he tried to get out of.

This continued, this man trying to get out of the building and ending up coming back in and with each wrong door he got more and more panicked. Until finally he made it outside. But even behind the door they could hear the scream. One of abject terror before it cut out. Kono figured that was a probably the man getting dropped.

Adam and Dana were both pretty confused but Kono knew exactly who this was and what had happened.

"Rowan," Kono said as she walked out of the shadows. She was in her Halloween costume. Kono had helped her pick it out, it looked great on her. Rowan just smiled up at her as if she had no idea what was wrong. "Where did you put that guy? I know you have him."

"He had some pretty dark and twisted thoughts so I put him in a time out."

"Okay… but where…"

"I'm letting him sit in the void. Letting him think about his life choices for a while. He's not protected or anything so he'll probably have blacked out from the vacuum by now."

"Rowan…"

"Fine," she said and then a portal opened up on the ceiling and the first man fell landing quiet painfully on his front in the dirt at their feet.

Rowan turned a sarcastic grin onto them. "There happy?"

Kono was happy. Well a little happier. "And the first guy?"

"Uh… to be honest not sure, I think I dropped him in on Con so he's probably dead." Rowan nudged the man at her feet with the toe of her boot. "You know I really thought the death cult was next year."

She needed to stop saying shit like that as if it meant nothing. And Kono didn't have time for that. Adam looked from the ceiling to the man to Rowan and then back to the man and to the ceiling. "What the hell just happened?" he asked.

Yeah Kono didn't have time for that either. She was finally listening to what was going on outside, there were cries of confusion and she had narrowed her eyes at Rowan again.

"What have you done?"

"I just got here I haven't done…"

"Why hasn't anyone come in to check on us?"

"Oh, I'm fucking with the doors. They can't get in." She said it so calmly, like it was perfectly fine for someone to be using their powers to make sure no one else could enter a room. "I'm going to go get you back up. You guys go out that door and you'll be okay. But uh, don't go to the house. House is a trap, don't go to the house."

They all rushed to the door she pointed at and when they opened it the door it lead to just jungle. They rushed out, Kono turned to see where Rowan was and she wasn't there. The door shut and then vanished. There was no building, no door, just trees. She didn't have time to digest what Rowan had just done, she simply turned and ran to catch up with Dana and Adam.
