A/N: Hello my wonderful readers. If you're worried about Catherine not getting it well… she's gonna get a talking to here, and she's gonna get one in chapter 341 (I might be wrong, but somewhere around that one I promise she's gonna get talked to). And you guys are right, I left it on an ominous note. That is for a REASON! Cause the drama is not done yet. More is coming! And I think you guys will like what I did with all the chapters that are in between the now and the next number.
Chapter 329
Steve and Catherine packed up their little safe house in record time. Then they went straight to the little airstrip 16 miles south of Rabat, where Wo Fat knew people who would get them all home. There were three planes chartered and ready to go, though Steve didn't really know why.
Not to mention he was distracted with Catherine and his mom at that point and Wo Fat was distracted by Rowan.
Out of no where, Wo had pulled out two oranges, passing one to Rowan. At first she didn't want it, but Wo Fat wouldn't take no for an answer. For some reason he was very insistent on her eating that orange. He'd have to ask him why later. Maybe it was because of all the void work she had done, maybe it was because they hadn't eaten yet.
He didn't have time to interrogate Rowan and her brother though, so Steve turned his eyes away from Rowan and instead he focused his attention on his mother. To be honest, he was a little salty. Rowan had been leaning against his side all the way to this little airfield in the first place. She was exhausted, and had wanted him near her, but they got out of that van, and Wo Fat pulled her away from Steven with a simple: "Go talk to your mom."
Rowan was now leaning against Wo Fat, all cuddled up and cozy and irrationally he was jealous. He wanted to go over there and tug her out away from Wo Fat but he was being irrational and he knew it. Wo Fat had no romantic interested in Rowan, Rowan had no romantic interest in Wo Fat. She wanted him. Only him. He needed to show her that he trusted her.
So he very forcibly made sure that his attention was solely on his mother. "You, uh, you sure this is gonna work?"
Doris nodded. Yao hadn't joined them yet, Rowan had been kind enough to bring him a change of clothes and a grooming kit that he was putting to use in the small bathroom in that hangar.
"There are a lot of secrets in that man's head. A lot of people at the CIA who still consider him a threat. That's why they've kept him locked up all this time. So, as long as he's out there, they can't touch me. And they didn't know you were there… so…"
"Yeah but they knew Ro was there."
"No they didn't," Wo Fat called and that was Steve's attention back on Wo Fat. Firstly, how had he heard him, the guy was twenty feet away from him. Secondly, what the hell did he mean?
"The only reason I let Rowan get captured in the first place is because I knew there was no way they'd broadcast her name and her arrest at that blacksite on an open channel. I was banking on them being too afraid it'd get back to me and the app. There were only two people who knew who it was who showed up there last night and I shot them both dead."
That… that was actually a good play. He opened his mouth to say that but Wo Fat was talking again.
"And both your mom and my dad are going to be fine. They're not scared of his secrets their scared of me and that app. No one's going to touch them."
That was probably true too. Once more Steve tried to tell him that he had done a good job but Wo Fat interrupted him again.
"I have a question," Wo Fat asked. "Who's that?"
And then he pointed at Catherine who was across from them leaning on the jeep they had drove up there. She glanced at him and then to Steve clearly very confused.
All eyes turned to him but he just stood there, thumbing that orange apart and staring at her with narrowed eyes.
Steve was actually concerned, had Wo Fat hit his head? "Wo… Wo… that's Catherine."
Actual surprise dawned on his face. "Really? I thought Catherine was blonde. Wasn't that the girl you had with you? I swear she was blonde, and she was always all over you."
"Lynn?"
"No. The blonde one. I swear, there was a blonde one… back when I tricked you with oh… what was the short haired girl's name? I shot her North Korea."
At that Steve frowned. He always knew Wo Fat was callous but he didn't even remember the name of a woman he used as a mole, a woman he made trick him into going to North Korea and getting caught, a woman he shot dead? Wow. Just wow.
"You mean, Kaye?" Steve asked dryly.
"Right yes, I shot Kaye. Whined a lot about her boyfriend."
"Fiancé," Steve muttered. "And no, the blonde I had around me that time was Lori."
At that Rowan, who had been busy rooting through all of Wo Fat's pockets looking for something, looked up. "Right, Lori, I forgot about her."
Wo Fat went into his jacket pocket, pulled out a package of unknown candy and handed it to her. His eyes never left Steve though, they just stayed narrowed in his direction.
"There was more than one girl that you had working with you that you were dating?"
"I mean I wasn't ever really dating Lori…"
"No, that's not what's important," Rowan said as she went about tearing up her puul-n-peel twizzler. "How did you not recognize her, Wo? You had photos of her. You faked a whole wedding. With her picture!"
"I unno… I thought they looked the same, that she had just dyed her hair black or something. It wasn't till I got up close that I realized they were different."
Rowan stared at him blinking her eyes as if she didn't get it. Catherine must have felt embolded by the way Rowan was talking to him because she squared up her shoulders and half took a step towards him.
"Well since you brought it up. You clearly knew me enough to blow my cover on every op I was on," Catherine said smugly and Rowan turned him with wide eyes.
Wo turned to her briefly before turning a dark glare onto Catherine, one that made Catherine look to him to save her, but Steve wasn't going to move.
"Okay that wasn't me personally it was a process running through the app, so it had the photo and the name. Contrary to popular belief I had more important things to deal with other then seeing to it that you were fucked. Nor did I sit there staring at your photo coming up with new was to torment you. No one cares about you that much."
"Wo Fat!" Rowan snapped and his he actually winced, but that may have been because she shouted his name in his own ear. "Why would you do that? Why would you care?"
"He left you for Catherine. I have to hate her. You're my sister. It's solidarity."
"He didn't leave me for Catherine, you made that up!" Rowan cried with a stamp of her foot.
Wo Fat crossed his arms. "Yeah… but… but you thought he did. And he did tell you he'd marry her and… look, I don't need to explain myself and I'm sure as hell not apologizing."
Rowan groaned. "Oh my god! Fine. Don't apologize, but you're not doing it anymore." "—What… but… she has a new assignment and I was actually looking forward to…" "No!" "Aw, come on! I never actually got to fuck with her and this is my chance to…" "NO!" "—But it's with the Russians!"
Rowan turned to Catherine. "That true?"
She stared at them wide eyed but nodded and Rowan rolled her eyes. "Yeah don't take that op."
Wo Fat tilted his head back and groaned. "Aw come on! You never let me have any fun!"
"And what was this?" Rowan cried gesturing to where they were.
"It was a rescue mission. And it didn't go my way at all, therefore not fun."
"Your way, what would your way have been?" Grover asked and Wo Fat blinked at him as if realizing he was there for the first time.
"Who is that?" he asked pointing at Grover. Wow, Wo Fat just didn't know anyone.
"Ah, Lou Grover. You saved my daughter from Ian Wright." He then offered him a hand that Wo Fat didn't take.
Wo Fat nodded as if that explained everything and then asked: "Who?"
Beside him Rowan groaned. "Codename Smokey. Girl in a cage. Kid who took Sandy down."
"AH! Yes, okay. It's nice to meet you," Wo Fat said. It must have been nice having someone who could translate for him. "To answer your question, if things had gone my way you would have walked up on a warzone. There would have been a lot more guns and explosions and everyone would have died."
"So everything's just death with you," Grover said with a nod. "I get it."
"Not that we're saying it should have gone that way, but why didn't it?" Kono asked.
Wo Fat jerked his head in Rowan's direction. "Con was busy and I don't trust that one with a gun."
This time Rowan groaned. "It was an accident! And JC was fine!"
"You had an unloaded gun in your hand and still managed to misfire," Wo Fat growled and then he turned back to Kono. "That and she doesn't do well with bodies and blood and I didn't want to have to worry or babysit her. So we did things her way."
"You still got to kill some people," Rowan said with a pout and beside her, Wo just rolled his eyes.
"Okay, I gotta question," Steve asked and Wo Fat visibly groaned.
"What am I being interrogated?" he cried and Rowan scowled up at him.
"Steve asks questions. It's never ending. I told you this."
"Kay calm yourself. I've got one question and then it goes back to my mom," Steve said and caught the oh joy his mother said under her breath.
"Fine. Shoot."
"Why are there three planes?"
"Really? Isn't that obvious?" he asked and when Steve just glared at him he said: "We're going in separate directions."
"Okay. I know my mom and your dad are, but the rest of us…"
"No… Catherine is supposed to be going with your mom," he said slowly as if he had to else Steve might not understand him. He glanced to Catherine who nodded to confirm that was true. "Then I have a plane for you and your Five-0s, but I know you guys are going to get stopped when you land, and since Ro doesn't have her passport and there's no record of her leaving with any of you she's coming with me..."
"No."
It was automatic. The second Wo Fat said he was taking Rowan it just shot right out of his mouth.
"I didn't even get to finish, McGarrett," Wo Fat cried. "I'm not always trying to steal her from you."
"Fine, you're right. I'm sorry. Please continue."
"She's coming with me. We're going to fly to Japan and then take a boat over to Hawaii."
"No," Steve said again. "She's not going with you, there's no reason…"
"She's out of juice which means she can't jump home. There's no record of her leaving the island and the CIA wants to question you. I've got a backstory for you with a fake op drawn up by Kong that can be searched and located. I have a fake itinerary for you, but if Rowan's on that plane when you touch down, they're going to grab her to get info on how I'm moving around, and then you'll be calling me to get her out. You want a repeat of Colombia?"
"Well no…"
"Then she's coming with me. It won't be that long. Three days max. She'll keep you posted…"
"Her phone's at home."
"Well I have mine, don't I?" Wo Fat snapped. "And you've had no problems calling me on it in the past." That was true he hadn't. "Now bother your mother, leave me alone."
Steve half laughed, more like scoffed, but turned back to his mom as requested, who was shaking her head. "I'm not sure which version of him I'm more scared of. The sociopath I was used to, but this… this is a whole new level of scary."
"I know," Steve said. "And he's been so… nice… or at least as nice as someone like him could be."
Doris glanced to Steve and then back to Rowan. "I know… I know you were probably worried about his influence on her while she was gone," she whispered and Steve nodded. "But you know… I think you should be grateful, because just look at what her influence on him has given us."
A very strong ally. Even if Steve didn't want to admit it. Even if Wo Fat would only ever be helping him because Rowan said so.
Steve then turned back to his mom. "So what happens after… you know… after everything is settled, I guess… then what?"
His mother shrugged. "Then I'll be able to come home."
Despite himself his heart lurched up into his chest, he'd love that, like really, 100% love that but he knew his mom, she'd never be able to be a civilian. She he just chuckled at her.
"Seriously, I might even get a place just down the street from you." He nodded again, trying so hard not to take those words to heart because he knew it was never going to happen. "Oh, trust me, you're never gonna be able to get rid of me."
"I bet."
She softened a bit, opening her arms for a hug. "Come here."
Steve went in for the hug without a second thought letting her hold him for as long as she wanted before letting go.
When he did she clapped her hands together and seemed to really think about what she was going to say next.
"I want you to know that… everything I did, every decision. I made them for the right reasons." He tried to stop her but she wouldn't let him. "No, no, listen, at least I thought so at the time, you know?" and he nodded to show her that he knew that. "But, you know, if you ever want to know more about me, about who I was before, the answers are waiting for you at home."
Okay… wait… what? "What do you mean?"
"Ten paces from the far wall in the study, there's a loose floorboard. Under that there's a lock-box. The combination is 90268. Inside… you'll find all the answers. A probably a few baby pictures of him."
"Whoa!" Rowan cried suddenly darting forward. The second she was close to him, Steve had an arm wrapped around her waist. "Baby pictures. Like little infant sized Wo Fat? REALLY?!" Rowan then hooked her fingers into his shirt and shook him in her excitement. "You have to find those pictures and send them STRAIGHT to me, so me and Con can laugh…"
"Rowan!" Wo Fat sighed.
"I bet he was a chubby baby, was he a chubby baby?"
"No! I was a regular baby," Wo Fat cried.
Doris ignored both of them to put a hand to Steve's cheek. "Take care of yourself, okay? And take care of her." She then pulled Rowan in for a hug. "And thank you for coming to get me."
"Any time," she said. Once she let go Doris pointed a finger into her son's face.
"I don't know why I have to tell you this, but lock her down. And I don't mean powers wise, I mean ring wise. Lock her down before you do something stupid and she smartens up and leaves you again."
"See, everyone thinks the same thing," Rowan said to him and then turned back to Doris who was busy hugging Wo Fat who was acting like he didn't want it though clearly he did. "And you should come to Hawaii and meet Nahele, he's practically your grandchild anyway."
Doris just hit them with a non-committal shrug and he figured that was about right. So before Rowan could get disappointed he moved to deflect the attention back onto him.
"You know mom, being a spy wasn't the only thing that you were good at," he told her, just out of the blue because he felt like she needed to know that and it just made her smile.
She whispered that she loved him then she nodded and then turned to where Yao Fat was. He had just come out of the hangar in a nicely pressed suit looking almost like an older Wo Fat. He had cut his hair best he could and trimmed the beard. Though he kept most of it.
Wo Fat let him shake everyone's hand, to thank them for coming to help get him out, even though Wo Fat and Rowan had done all the work. Then he approached his dad himself. Which was precisely when Rowan left Steve's side again.
"No, we're not going to shave the beard off?" Wo asked and his father smiled at him before pulling him in for another hug.
"Trust fall!"
Steve might have screamed, did she just spin on heel and drop like that? On purpose?! But Wo Fat shoved his father away and caught her without fail and she smiled up at him.
Wo Fat glared at her. "What the hell is the matter with you?"
"I was saving you from the hug," with a giant smile on her face.
Wo Fat shook his head but a small smile was on his lips, a sort of secret one. Like she secretly pleased him.
"I swear to god," Wo Fat snarled pushing her up so she was standing again. "You're like a fucking puppy. Where is your goddamn off switch?"
Rowan pointed to Steve and Wo Fat scowled. "Ha, ha, funny," he said sarcastically. "Can I trust you to stay still?"
Rowan nodded animatedly and he turned, took one step away and she did it again. Despite being angry he whirled around and lurched forward to catch her. He was so off balance and in such a deep lunge that he went down to the ground with her.
God Steve was going to have to save him soon or Rowan might drive him to be violent. Not with her, of course, he didn't think Wo Fat would ever hurt her, but he didn't really like Catherine. Steve wouldn't have been surprised if Wo got too frustrated with Rowan and just shot Catherine instead. But Wo was right, Rowan really did get hyper when she was overtired, he'd have to get her to nap.
Catherine moved away from the group and came towards him. He could see Rowan's eyes on him from where he was standing, but she stayed by Wo Fat who was accepting a hug from Doris and seemed to be getting briefed on whatever their plan was. To distract Rowan, Wo handed her his phone.
"So, uh, I'm gonna be hitching a ride with them," she said. "I told my superiors that I'm already blown but they'd like me to head down to get the other people out. Since we're not sure how much of the op is blown. We're assuming all of it."
Steve nodded, yeah that was a pretty good plan. "Right well… uh… you're happy… doing what you're doing… right?"
He was hoping yes, because he kind of felt bad that Wo Fat had been doing all this terrible stuff to her and Steve was happy at home with Rowan. He was hoping that Catherine was at least happy so he'd feel less guilty.
She thought a bit and then said: "Yeah. I am."
"Alright. Good. That's good," and it was, because now he didn't have to feel bad.
Behind her the plane fired up and Doris and Yao were already making their way onto it. She smiled almost sadly up at Steven. "I should go."
He nodded and offered a hug to her, which she took without a second thought. "Thanks for coming to get me."
She stooped down to get her bags and then, when she was standing again, she felt like there needed to be more to this good-bye.
"You know just because I'm not in your life anymore doesn't mean I don't care," she said to him and Steve nodded. "Well… see you around, sailor," she said turning away from him, except she didn't go far. She dropped her bags and turned around. "I know about it."
"What?"
"I know… what you were going to do before I left," she explained and Steve sighed. Goddamn it.
"Oh… oh no… Rowan told you, didn't she?" he asked and when she nodded he shook his head. "Fuck… did she tell you everything?"
Because it would be really weird to have to explain why he would stoop so low as to propose to another woman simply because he was mad at the one he was actually in love with.
"It was an accident, she didn't mean to," Catherine said with a wave of her hands. "I'm so sorry…"
Oh she thought it was genuine. She thought that he was actually thinking of proposing.
"Ah, she didn't tell you," Steve hissed under his breath and Catherine lowered her eyes.
"I would have said yes you know," Catherine whispered and Steve moved forward to stop her before things got even further out of hand.
"Okay… so Rowan didn't… uh… explain… and this is gonna sound super fucking shitty. But uh… have you wondered why Wo Fat went with the lies he chose? Why he chose to tell Rowan that me and you got married?"
"Uhm… I guess Rowan knew about the proposal."
"Yeah, you see… uh… before Rowan left, she and I had an argument that culminated in me threatening to marry you if she didn't stop talking to Wo Fat. And then she got… she got kidnapped and I thought… I thought she was in Japan with Wo Fat so I went out and bought a ring and decided I was going to propose to you."
Catherine took that in and Steve stood his words sunk in.
"Yeah, fucked up right?" he asked once she seemed to think it over.
"So that proposal was…"
"To spite Rowan, yeah. And could you imagine what it would have done to us if I had actually gone through with it? What would have happened if she came back? How would you have felt to have that ring on your finger and know you were always second best? That if she came back, you'd' be gone and I'd be with her? Cause we both know that's what would have happened."
Catherine stared at him, she may not have thought about it before but she was thinking about it now.
"I'm sorry Cath… I shouldn't have… this is better for both of us, I'm with who I want to be…"
"And she has Billy," Wo Fat called and Steve stopped.
"Why are you listening in? Why? How even? You got supersonic hearing?"
"No I put a bug on you," Wo Fat said holding up his phone and showing him the earpiece that was plugged into it. One line running to Steve, one running to Rowan. "It's been on you since we got here."
Steve shook his head. He wanted to be mad, but he had a feeling that Wo Fat had guessed he'd say bye to Catherine and wanted to be sure that they didn't do anything kissy faced. Like he would.
"How did you even know about Billy?"
"The app tracks you," Wo Fat said. "I know you spend a lot of time on his ranch. Rowan filled me in on your relationship with him while we were waiting to hit the blacksite." He took in both their stares and said: "What? Rowan said I could keep monitoring her so long as it's not malicious."
Steve turned back to Catherine. "I… I'll get her on that when we get home okay?"
Catherine nodded and then turned back to Steve. "She's a good girl, Rowan. And you, you deserve to be happy," she said. "So if Rowan's your happy you hold onto her, and don't you ever let her go."
Steve turned to where Rowan was standing right beside Wo Fat. She was handing him back the ear piece and he was handing her another twizzler. Jesus, maybe they shouldn't give her anymore candy.
She was his happy though. And he was holding on, for as long as he could.
Then it was time for her to go and Steve was stepping back to let the plane taxi down the runway. As soon as he got back to the group, Rowan was there, to wrap her arms around him. He welcomed it and held her tightly to him for a long while before Wo Fat nudged them. Well, he nudged Rowan. He was always pretty carefully not to touch Steve.
"We gotta go, we have a boat to catch after all."
Rowan nodded to him and then went to pull herself out of his grasp but Steve held onto her a little tighter. "Just one more minute, please."
Wo Fat nodded before picking up his own bag and heading towards their plane.
Steve opened his mouth. He wanted to tell her something worth saying, something happy, something romantic. But Lou cut him off.
"I know you're zapped out, but what are the chances of you looking at the strings and telling me who Grace is dating? Cause if I come back empty I'm gonna owe Williams something and I just… I just don't…"
"Lou I'm trying to say good-bye here," Steve growled and the man raised his hands as if in surrender.
"It's your son," Rowan said. "Don't need strings for that. Nahele's been reporting back to me on that relationship for weeks. He's chaperoned a few dates and promised to keep it a secret so if you tell Danny and Nahele gets in trouble with your kids, I will personally fuck with every single string I have to so you never play a successful game of golf again."
Lou blinked his eyes and Steve tried not to laugh. For Lou, that was one hell of a threat. "Right, I'll just tell him I got nothing."
"I'm serious Lou, I'll make sure you fuck up putts!"
"Damn girl, no need to go Evil Witch on me," he said. "My lips are sealed, I promise."
Then he let Kono drag him away so Steve and Rowan could have an emotionally charged goodbye.
As soon as they were gone, Rowan put her hand to his chest and smiled up at him. "It'll be okay babe. I know this is scary, but I promise that he's not going to take me this time."
"No, I know," he said. "It's just… it… uh… I love you. You know that, right? None of this changed anything. I don't think you're a monster. I'm not mad at you. And… and… I love you."
Rowan smiled up at him. "You didn't change your mind because you got to have fun on an op with Catherine?"
Was that what she was worried about? Really? "Of course not. I mean, I let her get on a plane, right?"
Rowan half laughed and smiled at him. "Good. I really gotta go," she said. "But he's right, I'll keep you posted on our progress." Steve nodded trying very hard not to panic. She got up on her tippy toes and kissed him deeply. "And I love you too!"
Steve finally let her go and watched as she skipped off to her plane. He tried not to feel nervous about this, really, but he couldn't help it. He hated being away from Rowan. This day had been full of emotional trauma, he didn't want to deal with anymore, he just wanted to go home with Rowan. And he couldn't even do that.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Rowan slept most of the plane ride which dealt with her hyperness. She woke up her normal self, and Wo Fat was once again reminded that Rowan was much like a child. Or so he heard. He hadn't really ever had much experience with them. But he had heard that tired children often got very hyper. Rowan was a lot like that.
The drive from the jungle into Tokyo was supposed to be easy too, but Rowan had made that difficult as well. She had the nerve to call herself the better driver, and sure in a getaway situation he'd rather have her at the wheel, but she didn't know where she was driving and he didn't want her getting them lost.
But she had whined and bitched and eventually Wo Fat let her take the wheel. And Rowan took those backroads like she was on a race circuit. Drifted their jeep… which he didn't think could drift in the first place… right into a tree.
After that he drove and she wasn't allowed to bitch either.
Being in Tokyo hurt him. He didn't think it would, but it did. It did because this was where Jian was. This was where he was creating some sort of future with her, and now it was gone. And that was nonsense, because she wasn't actually in Tokyo she was in Osaka. He had a feeling that Japan was just ruined for him now.
Not that he would have given up the chance to save his dad if he could. He just felt like she never should have made him choose between her and that, but it still hurt him to think of what he had lost. Maybe not as much as when he thought he had lost Rowan though, so maybe she did have a point about her being second best so long as he loved Rowan. Even if I wasn't romantic.
"Whatcha thinking about?"
Rowan sat herself down beside him on the cargo box he was sitting on and then stared at him with those mesmerizing blue eyes he never could resist. No point lying to her, she'd get it out of him or annoy him until he conceded.
"Me and Jian."
They were waiting for the boat to make way, which should have been happening soon. They had stopped in Tokyo so Rowan could do some shopping. Wo Fat got necessities, like anti-sea-sickness meds and food and what not. Rowan bought sparkly things, like a talking Pikachu plush for Nahele and pretty paper to write song notes on, and a case of speciality beer for Steve.
"Mmm yeah… guess it sucks," she said. "She was being unreasonable though…"
"I was lying to her. I did say I'd stop talking to you and then didn't. I didn't even try to stop talking to you, I just hid the fact that I was from her. That's not a good thing to do, that's not a healthy relationship."
Rowan made a face at him at that, probably because she felt like he was making a dig at her. But unfortunately Rowan rarely made healthy relationship attachments, she hid things and lied frequently. It wasn't her fault, he realized, from what he heard of her mother, Rowan was conditioned to hide the things that made her a less than perfect daughter… or person. At least she was trying to make it better.
"Yeah, okay, in that way she wasn't being unreasonable, but… you know… people who love you shouldn't do that to you. Shouldn't ask you to give up your family. I mean… Steve's stopped and look how great everything is now."
"Two months ago, he did a shit job at proposing to you and when you said no to it he told you that he didn't want to get married at all."
Rowan paused. "Okay yeah, but that's his issues with commitment which are his mother's fault. Everything to do with you has been so much better!"
Wo Fat had to nod, that was true. He had gotten much better with Wo Fat's involvement in her life.
The boat finally pushed off, they were finally cutting through the water and heading further out into the bay. Wo Fat instantly handed Rowan her sea-sickness pills in case she needed them.
"Doesn't tell me what I should do."
Rowan blinked her eyes, turning them away from him and up to the night sky. "Well… what do you want to do?"
"I just said that's the problem."
"No, you said you don't know what to do. I'm asking you what you want." Wo Fat turned to her and she laughed at him. "Come on now. You were always selfish before me. Did what you want, took what you want. So what do you want Wo?"
But he hadn't been that person in a long time. Not since meeting her. She had ruined him kind of.
"I want to be with her."
"Well… alright. So you try. When this is done, when I got energy in my again, I'll throw you right back to her. And I won't even go along, but I'll get Steven to go, or Danny, they'd be great in helping you out. You can talk it all out and figure out a way for things to work."
"She wants you out of my life, Rowan."
"I know."
"I don't want you out of my life, Rowan."
"I know."
They were quiet a little while longer before she and she sighed heavily.
"I think the only thing you can do is stand your ground. Which I know sounds crazy. But just lay out all the cards. Tell her how you feel about her and about me and how it's two completely different things and then… you know… see what she says. If she can't see a life with you that has me in it… well… come back to Hawaii, we'll have post-break-up ice creams, don't worry I can make yours with whiskey, and then we'll find you another girl."
"Steve wouldn't mind?"
"No, he'd mind," she said. "He'd probably mind a lot, but… you know… you do things for family, like let them sleep on your couch when they break up with their girlfriend. And you're family so he's just going to have to deal with it."
"It won't start another argument?"
"Well, it might, but uh… I'll find a way to make it up to him, you know? Buy him a little something he could take off me with his teeth."
"Ew, Ro, no," he said checking her shoulder with his. "Jesus I don't want to think about that. Ew."
"Aw come on, like you haven't ever peeled something off of Jian with your teeth?"
He hadn't though he was starting think maybe he should ask Steve for some tips. Because while he was certain he knew the specifics of that move he wanted more information about what it actually entailed.
"We're going to stop talking about our love lives, I don't want specifics. Please. I'm begging you."
Rowan just half laughed. "Alright, fine, deal."
The two went quiet again and for a while they just let the boat carry them. They were making good headway. As they passed by Osaka, which hurt to look at even more than Tokyo had, he had turned, turned to look at the lights, knowing that one of those buildings had Jian in it as they could see the ocean from their balcony. It was because they had been so quiet that he heard it. The sound of a secondary engine. Wo Fat turned and saw a little cruiser making it's way towards them. The kind of boat that coast guards or police would use.
"Rowan get up," he whispered but she didn't, instead she turned to see what the problem was. He noticed it to, there was more than one boat and they were essentially flanking his liner. That was not good.
This could be anything. A rival trying to take his boat. Someone sent to be a thorn in his side. Could have been Steve coming to get Rowan. But it wasn't until the helicopter showed up that he realized what exactly this was. It was an arrest.
"Down below, Rowan go down below!"
But she wouldn't leave without him, she tugged on his arm trying to make him come with her. They were shouting in Japanese. She didn't know what they were saying. But he did.
They weren't just there for him, they were there for her too. They kept looking for: "Them." He could get arrested, Rowan, on the other hand, could not. He was not dealing with another Colombia situation. Not without him free to go and rescue her. Who would come to get either of them if he went down with her? McGarrett? He'd come for Rowan but it would take him too long.
"It's an arrest Rowan," he said struggling to push her down. "Now I can hold them off, but you have to jump. Jump to Steve, pull from him, he won't care if it'll save you."
"I'm not going to leave you!" she cried again.
They had boarded the boat, he could hear the people coming, could hear them coming and he only had a pistol.
And then Rowan had a look on her face, one that he recognized. But before he could tell her not to, she shoved him right into the void.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Jian woke up to a terrible crashing and when she managed to rush out into the living room, she found that Wo Fat had crashed into the couch, apparently hard enough to knock the whole thing over. Now already that didn't make sense. There was no one to push him and there was no way he just tripped over and knocked the whole couch onto its back. Especially since he was lying on the ground.
But then she decided that didn't matter. What mattered was that he was back and she so did want to talk him.
"Wo?" she asked and his eyes found her. For a few seconds his eyes just caressed her then the color drained from his face.
"No!" he said forcing himself up. "No. No. No."
Well she wasn't too happy to see him either.
Once on his feet, he stiffly rushed to their balcony where they had a perfect view of the Osaka Bay. She followed him wondering what it was he was looking for.
And then she spotted it probably same time that he did. The little speck on the water, bright and orange further out by the ocean. A boat was on fire.
"Rowan's on that boat."
It came out in some soft horrified whisper and Jian turned to him surprised. Yes, she didn't like the girl but that didn't mean she wanted her dead. Well she might have thought that… and maybe she did kinda for a minute there… but not for real. Not when she knew that it would hurt him.
Also, how was she out on that boat, and he there?
She didn't get to say anything, he was already on the phone and heading out the door.
"Activate Sanctuary on red threat level. I need every available contact. I need them all heavily armed. Code Name Professional is on a boat on the of Osaka bay, it's the one under seize and on fire. Activate all forms of tracking I need to know who these people are where they're taking her."
Just like that Wo Fat ran right out of her life once more, without a second glance at her. And once again she was reminded that he would always love his sister more.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Rowan had kept her promise to keep him update for the first couple of days of her trip. He had called her when he landed, she had called him back to tell him that she too had landed. They had a lengthy call during the car ride from the jungle to the Tokyo, where Wo Fat was driving and she was bitching. And then there was a second call where he found out that Wo Fat had let her drive and she got a little wild and he was yelling at her.
She had wanted him to tell Wo Fat that she was a great driver normally, which made no sense because Wo Fat would know that better than he did. Which was about when he found out that she had crashed their jeep.
After he hadn't backed her up, but instead had yelled at her for driving recklessly on roads she didn't know, she had hung up on him. She accused him of siding with her brother, to which he said that he was siding with whatever kept her safe and alive. For a long while she was silent until she had called him again to say good night to Nahele and to tell him that she was about to get on the boat.
He hadn't heard from her since, which was a problem, because that wasn't like her. She had promised to call to speak to Nahele before he went to school but she never called.
When he had first showed up to pick him up, the kid was rightly panicked. He had started hyperventilating when Steve showed up at the Grover's without Rowan and he had to admit that Rowan wasn't with him but with Wo Fat again. It took a lot to calm that kid down. But he wasn't fully calm until he talked to Rowan once she landed. She had told him that yes, she was with her brother, but they were just taking the long way around cause he couldn't go through TSA check points.
Nahele had thought this was weird, but he was just glad that Rowan was on her way home. You know… until she went radio silent.
Steve was trying to be calm himself. Both Rowan and Wo Fat hadn't been available since the day before and he was starting to worry that was something was up. Not in the sense that Wo Fat had taken her, Rowan had void powers, pain or not he knew she'd use them to get back to him. But what if something else was going on? What if she was in trouble, what if they both were?
And with every passing hour she hadn't called him the more worried he got. It had taken some time but Steve had forced himself to go to bed. In the morning he'd try them again, and if he couldn't get a hold of them, he'd start tracking her, activate Sandy or something. He could do that right? If he reported an emergency. A Professional one.
He had gone to bed feeling more than uneasy, it always took him a long time to fall asleep when Rowan wasn't with him. And this night it took him even longer. He mustn't have been asleep for an hour before something grated against his senses.
Steve woke up, the night silent around him except for the sound of heaving breathing. He looked up and found himself staring down the barrel of a gun a familiar asymmetrical face staring down at him. His heart sunk into his stomach.
Wo Fat glared down at him from behind a shaking pistol and growled two words.
"Get up."
