So as always don't forget to review cause I'd love to hear what you think of this fun chapter, and I'll see you guys tomorrow.
Chapter 332
Jian was torn.
On the one hand she was worried. Worried that her boyfriend was going to get himself killed trying to rescue his sister again. She was worried that Rowan would get hurt and then he really wouldn't come back and she wouldn't be able to convince him to pick her.
Then she would have to remind herself that she broke up with him. She would remind herself that she had told him not to come back. And that would, of course, remind her that Wo Fat had left her without even trying to argue. He just left with his sister and had been gone for the three days before she had surprised him and disappeared again.
Jian would remember to be angry for at least an hour and then the worry would come back.
Just because she was mad at him didn't mean that she wanted him to get hurt.
In fact, he still hadn't picked up his stuff, so she had sort of hoped that she could catch him and stop him from leaving. Remind him that while Rowan loved him like a sister, she kicked him out of her life all the time. And that at least with Jian, she could love him more than Rowan, she'd never kick him out of her life and they could have sex. Something he couldn't do with Rowan.
At least it was something she hoped he wasn't doing with Rowan.
Yes, she and Wo had phenomenal sex, but she knew if Rowan could offer him that too, she'd lose him in a heartbeat.
And her traitorous heart broke a little bit every time she thought about losing him to anyone let alone his Ro.
It had been another three days since Wo Fat had shown up in their apartment, knocking their couch over, which she still didn't understand how he had done that. She hadn't heard from Wo Fat since he rushed out of their apartment on the phone asking for every available man and weapon he had.
Though a few of the local papers wrote an article about that boat that had been on fire, it mentioned nothing about Rowan or it being an arrest. In fact, they only thing they said about that boat was that it had mechanical problems and that it had sunk. But that couldn't have been right, because Rowan was on that boat, and Wo Fat had gone back to get her.
And, of course, true to past experiences he had not yet come back to their apartment.
She really wished she knew if this was another one of his runners, or if he was just avoiding her because of what she said.
She was so upset about this turn of event, so desperate to catch Wo Fat coming to the apartment for his stuff that she had shut down her practice for the time being. But sooner or later she'd have to go back to work, so this better not be one of his runners.
The last time she got an email at least, but she was figuring, since she broke up with him, he wouldn't bother to inform her if he actually did run. Maybe she'd call Steven. He'd know where Rowan was? Wouldn't he?
Though Steven had a hard time keeping Rowan with him. Took him a whole year to get her back last time Wo had run off with her.
She had packed all of Wo Fat's things, not that he many things in the apartment that were his. Just his suits and some of his more casual clothes and his hair and shaving products. In fact, as she was going through the apartment to find all his stuff to pack up, she found guns hidden in different places around the place, and a few knives.
She wasn't sure how she felt about that.
She had just brought the last of the boxes into the living room when the crash shook the apartment again. Was this Wo Fat coming back? He had come back with a crash before, though she didn't know how, maybe it was him again.
But when she rushed to the washroom it wasn't Wo Fat. It was Rowan. Again.
For the second time, Rowan seemed to have dropped from the ceiling and into her tub, though there was no hole in her ceiling. The girl was all splayed out like she had landed wrong, she was bleeding from her arm, and a hand was the back of her head. She must have hit it when she landed.
She looked at her surroundings, seemingly not noticing Jian at the door and then slammed a fist into the pink porcelain of the tub.
"Son of a bitch, this is not home!" she screamed. "Why can't I ever get this right? I did not want to come here!"
At that Jian came fully into the room, shutting the door behind her as she did. "How did you even get here?"
Rowan's head whipped up, her blearily narrowed her eyes at Jian like she didn't quite recognize her. "Oh great, it's you again!"
"Of course, it's me again. I live here!"
"Yeah, in an apartment my money bought," Rowan snapped. "Hypocrite."
It was Rowan's money? Rowan's money had bought their apartment? Wo Fat had never told her that.
She looked Rowan over. She didn't look soot stained or burned up. But her arm seemed to be leaking pretty badly.
Rowan had tilted her head back, resting it against the back of the tub as she groaned. She was definitely pretty. Not in the model kind of way, but she could see why a man like Wo Fat could be bewitched by her. Her face was round but symmetrical, which was cuter than Jian's pointed unsymmetrical one. Not that she was terrible a skewed but she wasn't ever going to be considered classically pretty. Her face was too long for that.
Rowan even looked better put together. Her leggings had some tears in them, her green off the shoulder shirt was stained with blood, but she managed to make that look good on her. Something, in Wo Fat's line of work, was probably a good thing.
If Jian had gone through half of what Rowan did, she would have looked a right disaster. In fact, she could prove it. She had gotten a good look at herself after her brother kidnapped her. She had been a mess. A big bruise on her forehead from where Hatachi had hit her, red streaks cutting into her skin from all the tears she had cried, red scabbed lips from all the nibbling she had done in her worry.
How had Wo managed to find it in himself to sleep with her that night was beyond her. But he had. Without a single hesitation, in fact, he initiated it.
Rowan's head tipped back to hers and Jian was surprised by the blueness of the eyes that were staring back at her. She had never seen eyes so blue before.
"Can I borrow your phone?"
Yeah, she could let her call him, but first she wanted to deal with something.
"Sure, but uh… you might want to get that leak plugged."
Rowan glanced down to where her arm was clearly bleeding and seemed almost surprised to find out she was injured.
"Do we need to take me to a doctor?"
"I'm a doctor, I'll get my stuff," she said offering Rowan her phone. "You try calling Wo see if he'll come down."
"Oh, he'll come, he's bound to be looking for me. He's got Steve with him too. If I don't get a hold of them, Wo's going to get more worried, and more violent, and then he'll argue with Steven and that won't end well..."
Jian wasn't certain what to say to that, in fact it seemed like the girl was rambling. So, she left Rowan in the tub to get the medical supplies she kept at her apartment for in case Wo Fat came back bloodied, which happened quite often.
She was only gone a few minutes but clearly Rowan hadn't gotten a hold of Wo Fat or Steven because she wasn't talking to them. But she seemed to be talking to someone else.
Jian hesitated just outside the door to see what she might slip up and say.
"Sandy… where's my brother, I can't get a hold of him."
Do you mean Codename NA or the Master?
"Master. And while I'm at it, where is Codename Captain America?"
Both the Master and Captain America are in Japanese Embassy of the United States.
"What why? Why are they there?"
They are looking for Professional. Master has gone to put pressure on one of his contacts.
"I'm Professional!" she cried and Jian's phone said nothing. "Okay… well tell both of them to call me on this phone, like… right now!"
Request acknowledged.
"What was that?" Jian asked as she opened the door and made her presence known.
"Sandy," Rowan said. "Easiest way to track my boys."
Insteresting. Who was Sandy? Who was Master? Who was Captain America? And why did she have to call her brother and Steve her boys. Steve may have belonged to her, but Wo certainly didn't.
"Who's who?"
Jian thought she might have been confused by the question but Rowan wasn't confused at all. "Master is your boyfriend. Captain America is mine."
"He's not my boyfriend anymore," she reminded Rowan as she dabbed antiseptic onto the jagged wound.
Rowan shot her an annoyed glare. "Yeah. Why is that? You really that threatened by me?"
"Yes."
Why lie about it? She was.
"Why? He doesn't live with me. He's not trying to date me. He doesn't even like me all that much."
That was such a fucking lie. Wo Fat loved her. She was probably the only one he ever did, or would love. And she thought that he didn't even like her that much.
"No. But you can snap your fingers and he'll go straight to you."
Rowan turned to her Jian who couldn't understand why she was so shocked. "He told you about the void?"
Now it was Jian's turn to turn surprised eyes up to her. What the hell did that mean? Rowan took in Jian's surprised face and then winced. She must have realized that Jian had no idea what she was talking about and therefore Wo had not told her a thing.
"Ignore that. Ramblings of a concussed girl."
Great, more secrets. Another something that only Ro and Wo knew about.
They were quiet a while longer. Now that Jian was certain there was no bullet stuck inside her, she was going to have to stitch the girl up. She didn't have much numbing cream left so this was going to hurt. She wasn't going to tell Rowan that though.
"You know… he only comes running cause if I'm snapping my finger something's wrong."
"Yes, I'm sure all your boyfriend troubles warrant your brother's immediate attention."
"Steve used to arrest me when he was mad."
Jian was so startled by that quiet admission that she dropped the needle and thread she was working with.
"Yeah. He hasn't done it in a long time. It was before we got together. When I first adopted Wo… whenever Steve got mad at me, he'd arrest me. Wo had to be my alibi a few times to get me out of lock up. And if I'm not dealing with Steve, then I'm getting kidnapped or putting myself in harms way and… he's had to rescue me a lot. Like more than normal. That's why he comes running. That's all."
Jian forced herself to turn away from Rowan and focus on stitching her injury. "That's not all of my concern though."
"Kay, well what other concerns do you have, maybe I can talk them out with you."
"Why can't Wo talk them out with me?"
"Wo doesn't like to talk. I can barely get him to open up."
"But he does."
"Yeah but I'm annoying. And he knows I won't drop it. He likes you. It's harder to open up when it's someone you like, when it matters what this person thinks of you."
That was true too. The fear of rejection was always there, looming above them, even if he knew how open and forgiving Jian could be.
"I suppose what I'm worried most about is that there is only room for one woman to love in his heart. And if that woman is always you… then… I will always be second best. Which This is going to hurt by the way."
She started stitching and Rowan actually cried out. She was so used to stoic drunken criminals that it almost surprised her.
"You did that on purpose!"
"Well I'm attempting to stitch you, so yes, I stabbed you with this needle on purpose."
Jian went back to stitching where Rowan grimaced and whimpered but basically muscled through it quite well. She was about halfway finished when Rowan said: "He didn't love anyone before me. You know. He wasn't capable."
Yes, as if that made all of this better.
"The whole reason he got into a relationship with you is because I got him to open up that softer side. And he tries, like really hard, with you. Like really, hard. He made me give him pointers on cooking. He can't cook for shit."
Jian couldn't help but smile at her because that was actually really sweet of him. "Does he ask you for advice often?"
"Yeah, all the time. Everything romantic, I swear he either got from me or Steve."
"He asked Steve for advice?" Jian asked because that was surprising. From what she understood the two of them were mortal enemies.
"Oh yeah! Steve calls him for advice too, and sometimes they trade ideas. So, like the dinner where you went to a spa first… you know the night before I showed up Steve thought that up. Wo copied him cause he thought you'd like it. Or in his words was worthy of you."
Rowan had seemingly forgot to be in pain. She leant back in the tub and half smiled. "It's funny. The two of them say they hate each other but the second something's wrong with me they both call one another."
Rowan suddenly turned to look at her. "You know when you were kidnapped by your brother, he was so freaked out. He didn't know what to do cause there was a lock on our shared funds and he needed me to go with him to unlock them. He wanted to go in guns blazing but he was worried your brother was going to hurt you, or you'd be mad for him hurting your brother, so he figured he'd just get the money and give it to him. He never did that with me. Sure, he was worried but he always let his anger take over. He didn't do that with you."
Yes and she was very grateful he hadn't gone in guns blazing. She might not have ever forgiven him had he had killed her whole family because he was mad they kidnapped and ransomed her to him.
"I'm really not that bad you know," Rowan said. "I promise. I'd never make him pick between me and you. And every time he has problems, he comes to me to help sort them out…"
"Yes, if I remember correctly one time you told him I was being unreasonable."
"Was that when you asked him to move in and he freaked out and you guys broke things off the first time?"
Wow and she even knew the time she was talking about. "Yes, that would be it."
"Well you were being unreasonable," Rowan snapped. "And if you remember I got him to see that part of the reason he ran off to Colombia was cause he was scared that you got to close. So… you know… I make him see his own faults too."
Jian nodded, alright, so that was true.
"I'm sorry I'm not what you expected. I'm sorry I adopted your boyfriend at the age of 40. But… I was here before you, and I strongly assume I'm his conscience which is a lot of pressure for me if you think about it. But we're not even on the same island, you know? You get to live with him, and do all the cute girlfriend stuff. I get the guy who doesn't understand why I'm crying cause I'm being silly."
"When did he say that?"
"When I was crying over Steven marrying Catherine."
"What? But he's…"
"It was a lie. Last year Wo Fat told a whole bunch of lies to keep me and Steve a part, one of them being that he married someone else. My love rival, of all people! The girl I stole Steven from in the first place and I was devastated. At one point he told me that he thought I had sufficient time to grieve so he didn't understand why I was still crying. And when explained he asked if girls were always this silly."
Jian blinked her eyes. She had long since finished stitching Rowan's arm and was now working on wrapping her up. She knew that Rowan and Wo Fat had fought about what had happened last year, but she didn't know just how deserving her anger at her brother was until right that moment. That was a pretty awful thing for Wo to do to his sister.
"Yeah. I get the guy who lies and kills people in front of me cause he forgets I hate the sight of blood. You get fun Wo like… all the time."
"You do get in trouble more than I do."
At that Rowan nodded, conceding that that was true.
"Alright, we'll I'm done," Jian said as she put everything back into her bag. "Why don't we get you into the bed hmm? Maybe you'll feel better after some rest? I'll keep trying Wo, see if he'll pick up."
"Sure," Rowan said letting Jian help her up. But she didn't want to leave the room, she dropped a hold on Jian and then dropped to the floor. "But I want to stay on the floor. I feel better when I feel floory."
Jian watched the girl curl up on the tiles and figured if she felt better on the bathroom floor then she was going to let her stay on the bathroom floor. She turned the lights off for her so Rowan could get a better, less disturbed sleep before turning her attention to her phone.
She noticed that Wo Fat had been contacted via the contacts she had on her phone and then Rowan had dialed another number that she didn't recognize. Then she spotted a strange logo in her status bar. When she pulled down her notification center it took some digging to actually find what it was.
The logo was blood red, with what seemed to be waves and it opened something called Sanctuary that then asked for her thumb print to go further into the app, but it didn't work for her. She wasn't at the right level to boot up the clearance she was asking for.
Which was odd because she wasn't trying to boot up any clearance, she just wanted to know what it was. But she would have to ask Wo about it when he came back.
Because he would come back, she had Rowan with her after all. And then once they came back she was going to be reasonable and talk things out, because… now that she had talked to Rowan, she was starting to see that… well… there was a completely difference between how he loved Rowan and how he loved her.
She pulled up Wo's contact and dialed it, noting that it went straight to voicemail, like it wasn't on at all. Then she tried the other number Rowan had dialed. It wasn't local, and she had guessed who it might be… and had been right. Though that phone rang, no one picked up and then she was listening to the voicemail greeting for Steven McGarrett's voicemail.
So she had been right, Rowan had called Steven.
They must have been in one very important meeting if neither of them had picked up their phones for their very previous Rowan.
Well, she had one other person she could call who would be able to get a message to Wo Fat. She just didn't know if she'd pick up.
But Jian didn't have to be worried, Michelle Shioma picked up on the second ring with a sultry: "Hello?"
"Hi. Mrs. Shioma. This is Jian Hui… I used to be one of your doctors… and I'm…"
"Wo Fat's girlfriend."
Well she had no idea they had broken up then. "Yeah, that's me. I was wondering if you could get a message to him."
"Me? Wouldn't he respond better to you?"
"Well he's busy right now," Jian said trying not to sulk. "Can you do it or not?"
"I can try."
"Alright, can you tell him that his sister is at our place, and I need him to come and get her," Jian said.
"You have Rowan?" Michelle asked. It was the way she asked it, like it was a surprise or something, that made her nervous
"Yes. Can you tell him to come to our place to come and get her?"
"Why yes… yes of course. Thank you, he will be very pleased with this information," Michelle said and then hung up the phone. Well at least Jian knew that he'd get the message, and he'd finally have to come and face her.
She just wasn't going to let him leave until he talked things out with her.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Rowan woke up a lot earlier then she expected she would but that was because the world was vibrating around her. Not in the sense that it was an earthquake but because the strings were vibrating in warning and it had jarred her awake.
She couldn't open her senses fully to the void, not without being charged, but they were trying to warn her of something. And she had this sudden feeling that she really, really needed to leave. Like right at that moment.
She forced herself up and off of the floor and forced herself to find Jian. Luckily for her Jian was just in the living room, one room away from where she had been sleeping in the bathroom.
"Something's wrong," she said, because she didn't quite know how to explain it.
"With your arm? Or with your head?"
"No in general. We're in trouble, we have to leave."
Jian had been sitting on the couch seemingly to read a book. Rowan went for her phone. She didn't know where in Japan was safe
It rang once and she got Wo's voicemail. "Why won't you pick up?!" she wailed into it, before hanging up and calling Steven again. His too, rang and then went to voicemail. Why the hell did they not have their phones with them? Seriously? If this were a case, Steven's phone wouldn't have left his hand.
"STEVEN!" she cried into the phone and then found that she didn't quite have anything else to say so she hung up on that call as well.
The vibration swung through her again. They didn't have time to wait for the boys. Rowan went for the door, opened it, clocked a group of serious guys getting off the elevator and slammed the door shut.
Okay, so they were out of time.
Rowan locked the door, knowing full well that it wasn't going to help them much and then rushed back to Jian.
"Sandy this is an emergency," she said. "I need you to hijack Steve's phone and get his attention, set of a really loud alarm or something and then get us connected, can you do that?"
Yes. Give me a moment.
"Bad guys found me, we gotta go," she said. Jian pointed to the door she just locked and she shook her head. "Nope, they're at the door we gotta go."
There came a deafening bang on the door, that sounded more like a slamming and then a shout of her name and to open up. Yeah, she wasn't about to do that at all.
Jian blinked her eyes but Rowan already had a plan, she grabbed Jian and forced her to follow her out onto the balcony. She shut the sliding glass door behind them as the door to the apartment began to splinter.
Then the phone began to ring. Sandy.
"Steven!" she shouted as soon as it connected them. "Why didn't you answer when I called?"
"I didn't have my phone, I…. are you okay? Baby are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine. But uh… we got hostiles trying to break down the door to Wo's apartment."
"Wo's apartment?" he echoed and in the background she heard Wo Fat's bemused voice asking: What?
"Yeah I jumped there…"
"What? Why?"
"I unno I was thinking of home and you or somewhere safe then something in the void knocked me clear off a cliff and I panicked!"
"That was me… sorry."
"You knocked me off a cliff?"
"You were getting shot at, I panicked!"
The door to the apartment burst open and Rowan immediately climbed over the railing.
"What the hell are you doing?" Jian cried.
"Well we can't very well stay here, now can we?" she cried back. Once over the railing she hopped the small space between balconies and then climbed over that railing. She then held out a hand to Jian. "Come on, it's easy!"
They were on like the fifteenth floor, it was impossibly high and the woman was obviously freaked out. "Trust me, I won't let you fall."
"What the hell are you telling her to do, Ro?" came from the phone but she ignored it, like he had been doing to her calls. Jian took her hand and hopped over that space no problem.
Rowan then got her to do with two more balconies, until they were on one that was covered in plants so the group of men they could hear tearing apart Wo Fat's apartment couldn't see them. Only then did Rowan go back to the phone.
"Look we're safe for now, but it's only a matter of time before they figure out where we are. How far are you two?"
"Pretty fucking far, Ro."
"Kay so I'm going to have to take charge here."
"What? No, no, don't take charge. Rowan, no, just hold on," Steve cried but Rowan wasn't listening to him.
"Listen to me. It's Shioma and Sam Alexander, he wants the copies of the ledger we stole, which are back in our house. In the back of one of my song books actually…"
"Ro that is such a shit place to hide something that fucking important."
"Don't lecture me right now Steven. I need you to do something for me."
"Yeah and what's that?"
"I need you to tell me that you love me."
"What? Why?"
"Just do it!"
"Fine, I love you, you know I love you… now whatever it is you're thinking about just don't. We are on our way and we will save you."
Except that they didn't have that kind of time. The door to the apartment their balcony belonged to began to shake, they must have had a signal tracker, and were tracking Jian's phone well that won't matter after this.
"I love you too, Steve," she whispered, grabbing Jian with her spare hand. "And Steven?"
"Yeah?"
"Brace yourself."
And then she forced the void to open up under their feet and the two women dropped into it.
