Chapter 335

Rowan had wanted to wait for her two brothers to be sober before she made the jump back to Hawaii.

The plan, originally, had been to leave them behind, pick up her passport, set up who'd be taking care of Nahele for this week of school and then set up a ticket for him to fly to Paradise Island. Then she and Steve would pack, jump back to Japan, where the government was sure both of them were at that moment and fly out to Paradise Island from there.

But all of that changed when she called Nahele. It was morning on Hawaii and she wanted her son to know that she was alright, that Steve had rescued her and she wanted to tell him the plan. He had been upset, of course, that they were going to go on a trip without him, right after getting rescued. She promised him up and down that he'd be coming to join them at the end of the week once he was done with school. He was even going to get a week off. Then he surprised her by saying that, if he got to choose, he wanted his Uncle Oz to watch him while she was gone and Rowan was just… shocked by that.

But how could she say no? She was about to go on vacation without him, granted he'd be joining her later, but still.

So, she promised she'd come back to Hawaii with her brother in tow, which gave them time to pack up their stuff. They all went back to Wo's apartment where Jian went about packing everything as the two drunken men were left on the couch as Steve made coffee to try and sober them up more quickly. Conejo wasn't as drunk as Wo Fat, so after a cup of coffee and eating all the leftovers Wo Fat had in his fridge, he was relatively good to jump again. Rowan popped him a portal to California so he could get his bag, being careful not to tell Steve where he was going, lest Conejo let it slip that he was stalking Dr. Grey.

When both her brothers were properly sober, she opened up a portal in the front door, and then pushed through the suitcase Jian had packed. With the bags through she got the people through and then just the door just before Nahele was dropped off by Grover.

Her son threw open that door, spotted her in the living room and screamed her name. His hug was more of a tackle that almost took her off her feet. She had never seen him so happy to see her.

"Stop getting kidnapped," he said to her. "Seriously. Please. Stop getting kidnapped."

"Here, here," Steve said, pulling Nahele off of her so he could hug him too. "I got her back, didn't I?"

"Yeah and that's great, but do you know what would be even better? If she didn't get kidnapped in the first place. I'm only fifteen and you're giving me GREY HAIR!"

"Me too kid," Wo Fat said heading straight for the couch. "I swear, gonna be grey before I'm sixty and it's all her fault."

Rowan rolled her eyes and Wo Fat glanced back up at her. "Why am I here by the way?"

"Kid needs a babysitter, he asked for his Uncle Oz," Rowan said. For a moment her eldest brother stared at her and then he started to groan.

"Nooooo, don't give me a kid," he said putting his head into his hands. His head was no doubt pounding as he had had the most to drink.

Yeah well Nahele wanted his Uncle Oz so Wo was stuck now. Best to change the topic.

"How did you even meet my kid anyway?"

"He was here with dad," Nahele said letting go of Steve to go and sit on the couch beside Wo Fat.

Wo Fat glanced at the kid before turning back to Rowan. He was clearly uneasy but he didn't say anything yet. "Yeah, I came to get Steve to help."

"You came and got him? Why didn't you call him?"

"You think I could have called your boyfriend and told him I lost you?" Wo Fat asked. He then scoffed, and from the kitchen, where he was rooting through the fridge, Con scoffed too. "Hell no, he would have flown to Japan to kill me. I figured if I told him in person, he'd at least see that I was sincere and not making up some excuse to run off with you again."

Steve pointed at him. "He has a point, cause the first thing I thought when he showed up in the house without you was that he was running off with you again. Also, he woke me up by putting a gun to my head so you know, that was fun too."

Rowan shot Wo Fat a dark glare and the man scowled at her. "I was about to tell him that I lost you, I figured he'd try to kill me. I had the gun for my protection and gave him his so he'd feel better. It's not my fault he chose not to pick his up."

He glanced back to Nahele who had been watching the two argue and then flashed the older man a smile. Wo Fat immediately turned to Rowan, clearly uncertain about what he was supposed to do.

"None of this tells me why you would leave your kid with me. I'm sure Steve doesn't trust me with him," Wo Fat snapped.

And while Steve muttered: true, Nahele moved to hug him and though the man tried to duck him let her son get his arms around him.

"Don't'cha love me Uncle Oz?"

"I don't love anyone," he snapped back immediately, a scowl on his features. Nahele wasn't put off in the least though.

"You love my mom though," he said.

Wo Fat turned appraising eyes to Rowan and said: "Barely."

Nahele's eyes crinkled in confusion but Rowan just shook her head.

"Don't worry I'm not leaving you alone with him, you will also have your Uncle Con," Rowan said.

From their kitchen, where Con was sitting at the kitchen table helping himself to whatever they had in their fridge, Con called out: "And I'm so much cooler. Just wait till your mom leaves I'll teach you how to shoot!"

"Hey!" came out of Steve so fucking fast it wasn't even funny, but it was Rowan who pointed a finger into Con's face and said: "No guns."

"Yeah, I said I'd teach him to shoot. Don't take my father-son bonding time away."

Rowan groaned but Nahele perked up. "Hey! Wait. So like, if you want to bond, why can't I come with you?"

"Because you have school tomorrow and… actually, you have school and one of you two need to drive him. You should have your Uncle Con drop you off, Oz is too conspicuous."

Nahele just rolled his eyes. "I can skip school."

"I told you, you have exams coming up, I want you to get your revision plans first and it's too last minute to take it off a whole two weeks now," she said. "I promise, on Saturday Auntie Jian will drop you off at the airport because both Uncle Con and Uncle Oz have no-fly bans."

"Wait a second," Nahele said. He pointed a finger at Wo and said: "Uncle Oz, right?"

Rowan nodded and he pointed at Con who was still shoving food in his face in the kitchen. "And that's Uncle Con."

"Yep."

"So who is Auntie Jian? And why I have I not heard of her before?

Jian, who had been hovering just slightly behind Steve and Rowan popped in at that point. "Uh, I'm Auntie Jian. I'm new I guess. I'm dating him," she said and pointed at Wo who was slowly trying to slide away from Nahele but got stuck in a hug again that was making him groan. She smiled pointedly at him as he put an awkward arm around the kid and pet his shoulder three short times, like he usually did to them when he didn't know what to do.

She then turned to Rowan. "But I wasn't sure I was staying with them..."

Wo Fat perked up, a wave of worry crossed his face. "Why not? You can have a vacation, a proper one on Hawaii, where you don't get food poisoning and I don't have to rescue my sister at an art show she never should have gone to."

He was pointedly glaring at Steven who was staring back. "Listen. We've talked about this. She does what she wants, when she wants. I get no say. I try to reign her in and she manages to do it anyway. You know this, you had her for a year, okay."

"True but we managed her much better than you did," Con said taking a seat on the other side of Nahele who was very interested in this conversation but had not let go of Wo Fat for a single second.

"Just going along with every bad plan she came up with is not managing her better," Steve argued.

"She wasn't hurt as often," Wo Fat offered.

"She got kidnapped like four times."

Steve was getting frustrated, Rowan put a hand out to quiet them all down. "Okay, let's calm down here. We can argue about this later. We have to pack. Nahele why don't you come with us, I'd like to lay out a few things for you to bring with you when you come to join us."

Nahele got up immediately. "Are you sure I can't come with you now?"

"'Hele, listen to your mom," Steve said, but he slung an arm around his shoulder as they both went for the stairs.

Wo Fat watched them go up the stairs and then turned to Conejo. "So like… at what point did we become babysitters."

"Well I became a babysitter in Rome. Lord knows how long you've been babysitting Ro for."

Rowan tried not to laugh as they went up the stairs. She shook her head but Steve but didn't seem to find them funny. Once he got Nahele into his room to look at possible vacation outfits he went to his to pack his own suitcase with Rowan.

"So uh… are you sure it's okay to leave our kid with Wo Fat and Sin Nombre. I mean… look at what being around them did to you."

"Oh, kids are more resilient," she said with a wave of her hand.

"Con wants to teach our kid to shoot."

"You want to teach our kid to shoot."

"Okay yeah… but it makes sense if I do it," Steve whispered.

Rowan stopped packing and turn to him. "We can wait to go, wait till next month to go. It can be a Christmas thing, if you'd like, that way we can all go. Make a proper family vacation of it."

Steve shook his head. "I'll catch a case and you know it."

"Okay, then, well have the three of them stay here, and have your friends swing by to make sure no one's dead. What do you say?"

"Fair." For a moment he went about packing and then he turned back to Rowan. "Are you excited?"

Rowan turned, that giant smile on her face. "So excited!" she squealed and he smiled even wider.

Okay so maybe it wouldn't be so bad to leave their kid with her brothers. At least he had Jian right? Jian would be the voice of reason.

Maybe he could ask Danny to come stay over. But that would probably only end in tears and either Conejo or Wo Fat shooting Danny. And Steve would be crying cause he'd be the one listening to it for the rest of his life.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Before Rowan and Steve jumped back to Japan to catch a plane, she and Steve handed him what might of well have been a book of rules. One page dedicated to Nahele's schedule, and then reams and reams of rules and conditions and things they weren't allowed to do with Nahele.

Con looked over the pages, looked back to Rowan and asked: "Since I'm a brother now, does that mean he's my nephew?"

Rowan blinked her eyes, clearly confused. "Yes, Con, he's your nephew."

"Cool. I call dibs on the cool uncle!" he cried putting a hand up in the air. "Which means I don't need these."

Rowan narrowed her eyes at him. Nahele had already gone to bed, she had said good-bye, a process that took like thirty minutes and somehow Steve's good-bye took even longer.

"Listen here, asshole," Rowan said getting right up into Con's face. "If something happens to my kid, because of either of you, you're gonna regret it. Do you understand?"

Con's eyes widened.

"I'm serious. Completely serious. I will put you in the ground. I mean I will pop a portal straight to the depths of hell and LEAVE YOU THERE!"

"That's if I don't get you to first," Steve added.

Jian took the sheaf of rules and looked it over. "I got this, I'll manage them, I promise."

Rowan looked a little weepy. "You sure? Cause… we can stay home."

"Rowan, just go."

"You're gonna take care of my baby, right?"

"Yes, Rowan, yes. We will take care of your baby. I took care of you, didn't I?" Wo Fat asked.

Rowan groaned again. "Oh my god he's gonna kill my baby."

Steve put an arm around her shoulders. "I'm sure it'll be fine, we'll call everyday. Jian is here. Danny will be here first thing in the morning."

"My god. It wasn't that bad. I actually took really good care of her," Wo Fat said but no one was listening to him.

Steve had Rowan open up a portal and finally they were gone. Once they were gone Con breathed out with a sigh of relief.

"Jesus and I thought we were scary. We better make sure nothing happens to that kid."

Wo nodded. "I'm sure we'll be okay. We did fine with Rowan, you know, how hard could a kid be? He's normal… right…?"

Jian was leafing through the rules, her fast and brilliant brain probably memorizing all of it in one go. "He looks pretty standard," she said. "I do have a question though."

"Yeah?"

"Uh… isn't he a little old to be Rowan and Steve's kid?" she asked. "I mean, they got together… what? three years ago?"

"Naw, they were like… pretending they didn't like each other for like two years. They've been official for like… maybe… two years?" Wo said. "Kid's adopted."

Jian turned to him, completely surprised. "Seriously? So, does she just adopt everything?"

Wo Fat shrugged but Con, he had something to say. "Rowan's trying to fill a void in her heart with people."

Jian turned to him perplexed. "What do you mean?"

"Well she had a mama that called her a monster, she had a brother who expected her to fix all his problems for her and a dad who was absent. Now she has Wo Fat who loves her for the way she is. She has me who she comes to with all her problems. And she has Steve who never leaves her alone."

"And the kid? What void does he fill?"

"He's someone she can give all that extra love she got to."

Jian seemed to think that over. Even Wo Fat seemed to think it over too, because he never saw it that way.

"I am her brother, not her mom," he said after some silent contemplation.

"Boy you hold her hair back when she pukes," Con snapped. "I just laugh and encourage her to drink more. See the difference?"

"Really? And who was holding her hair back after the chocolate incident."

"She ate half a box of poisoned chocolates, Wo. That whole different kettle of corn," Con cried. "Now, I'm assuming y'all want the bed?"

"You sounded hella southern there," Wo told him but Con just scowled at him. "Yes, we would like the bed, though… I'm a little afraid to sleep where they you know…"

"Don't think about it," Con said with a shrug. "Go to sleep we have a really early morning tomorrow. Kid's got school."

"You mean, you have an early morning, you're the one driving him to school," Wo snapped but Conejo was already moving towards the couch where he clearly planned to sleep. Wo didn't want to admit it but he was getting too old for couches. His old bones and back needed a bed.

He only had to glance towards the stairs to spot Jian just waiting a few steps for him, and he was simultaneously nervous and excited at the same time. He took her up the stairs to where Steve and Rowan's bedroom. For a minute they both stared at the bed, until Jian became to interested about the room and began to look around at that.

Already their suitcase was laid out at the foot of the bed all they'd have to do was open it and get ready for bed. Toothbrushes and pajamas. Did he really want to sleep in his sister's bed? She had a fuck-tonne of sex with Steve after all.

She moved past him picking up the picture by the bed which was a picture of Steve, Rowan and Nahele together before carefully putting it down. The bedroom had a nautical, wooden cabin kind of feel, and with the ocean lull in the background he sort of felt like he was on a boat.

It was very calming actually.

Wo Fat went into the bag for his pajamas and everything else he'd need for bed, being sure to pull out whatever Jian was planning to wear as well. He tossed everything onto the bed and then easily pulled his shirt over her head.

"Uhm… before we go to bed… I was thinking… I was thinking that we need to talk."

Wo Fat paused while unbuckling his belt and sighed. "Okay, so I didn't find out about the magic powers until last year," he said. "I don't know how to explain it, I don't. I just know that she's got them and she has bare minimum control."

He turned and was surprised to find that Jian was smiling at him. "Yeah, you know what? We can unpack that later," she said. "I meant we need to talk about us."

Wo Fat took that in. "I'd rather talk about the powers."

Jian shook her head. "Rowan says you deflect, but she also says that if she annoys you enough, you'll open up."

Wo Fat scowled at her. What the hell happened to that girl's loyalty? Why was she outing him like that?

"When she comes back from the Bahamas I'mma slap her."

"You should thank her, you know. She saved our lives. And she really talked you up."

Ah, there it was. There was the loyalty. Already Wo Fat was smiling, he didn't want to because he figured the conversation was going to be very serious. A proper ending if you will.

"Yeah that's my girl. Too resourceful for her own good and twice as loyal."

Jian approached him. "I also talked to Steve," she whispered. "And he was pretty clear that the whole, making you two choose thing doesn't work out."

Huh… it was very nice of Steve to try and help. It was fair, Wo figured, seeing how much help he had tried to be and was to Rowan and Steve's relationship.

Still he casually shrugged and said: "I mean it didn't work out for him."

"And it's not going to work out for me, is it?" she asked softly. "I can see it now. The difference. You just sort of… soften the second she comes around. And don't get me wrong, you're soft around me too, but with her… I mean… wow."

Wo Fat hung his head, it was true. He did soften when she was around, but that was because he didn't have to be that big scary criminal around her. He knew he could let his guard down and she wouldn't hurt him.

"She's filling a void in her life with you, and you, you're filling one with her. I used to think you were looking for someone to take care of, but that isn't it. She takes care of you. Doesn't she?"

Wo Fat kind of winced and bit and she laughed.

"Yeah. Yeah. You may not want to admit it, but she does. Not in the traditional sense, but every time me and you had a problem, she was who you called. And I know, I know now, that it isn't because you love her more than me, it has nothing to do with that at all does it?" Wo Fat shook his head and she smiled again. "It's because you trust her. You trust her implicitly. And that's because she's earned it. That man she's dating came flying at me looking for you two. I haven't ever seen someone so determined in my life, there was a fire in his eyes that just… took my breath away. And she came back to him and she never gave you up once."

"She's impervious to Steve's determination but not his good looks. She's been like that since before I came around. But yes, you're right. She has never once given me up to Steve. Even when I deserved it."

"And I suppose… when it comes to me… I'd be filling a different void?"

Wo Fat blinked his eyes. "Well… yes…"

"And that if I earn it, you'd trust me just as much as her?"

Wo Fat nodded and she smiled like that one motion had relieved all her worried. And that smile she was wearing, it was a happy one. She immediately hopped over to him and her hands going to his arms.

"Alright. Then… then you don't… then you don't have to choose."

A smile crept onto his features, one that she had never seen before. "Really?"

"Yeah, I mean… just so long as you can promise to not romantically love her more than me."

Wo Fat half laughed. "I can definitely promise that. I have absolutely no romantic interest in Rowan Pierce. I swear. And I never will."

Her smile widened as she wound her arms around his neck, while his hands rested at her hips.

"Well then… I think having your sister around might be helpful."

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah, so whenever you mess up you can go to her and she'll set you straight."

Wo Fat laughed at that and moved to kiss her. "She already does that, but I'm assuming she already told you that."

"Yep."

She let him kiss her a little more deeply and after that, the conversation stopped.
