Chapter 337
The all-inclusive Paradise Island Romantic getaway was everything Wo Fat had said it would be. He had booked them the largest, most expensive suite in all of the Atlantis Hotel. The bridge suite.
No wonder he was broke. He must have spent every last penny on this reservation. All because he was planning to say goodbye to her. She hadn't told Steve but she was actually super touched that her brother had done this for her. And that he had been kind enough to give it to her and Steve when he could have taken Jian here.
Rowan and Steve had packed a lot into the last couple days. They had couple's outings where they could swim with marine life, hike up and down the many trails, both with tours and without. They could go on boat rides, and kayak rides, go snorkeling, diving, all kinds of swimming, and go out for dinner at a different restaurant every night. In three days they had done everything there was to do and had as much sex as a pair of rabbits in the spring.
Steve fucked her everywhere. In the bed, in the bath, on the balcony, in every swimming pool the hotel had to offer, on the beach, in the ocean and against every tree he could find. They even fucked during one of their scuba diving sessions.
It was tricky but it was worth it.
And while Rowan had come to realize how much her brother value her, Steve had come to a completely different conclusion
That's what this incident had proved. That Rowan was worth everything. She was worth chancing his position with Five-0 by leaving without any notice twice in one month. She was worth dealing with Wo Fat for four days. She was worth every little bit of frustration she caused him over the years. Worth every fight, every scar and every shed tear. Because it all came down to one thing:
Steve McGarrett was nothing without Rowan Pierce.
So that morning, waking up shrouded in soft white, the sound of the surf lulling him into a sense of a serene calmness, Steve found himself staring at the sleeping face of the woman he loved. His heart sung, filling his chest with this glorious happiness at finding himself in bed with her and wanting nothing more than to stay just in this spot for the rest of his life. With the rising sun illuminating the highlights in her dark brown hair and playing across the features on her face, Steve McGarrett made what would be a life changing a decision for him.
He was going to propose to Rowan today.
This was a gamble for Steve. He had offered Rowan marriage not too long ago and had been shot down out of the sky. Wo Fat had helped him see that it was because Rowan had wanted him to be romantic about it. She wanted a proposal and a proper wedding, not have him turn to her while she was making breakfast and tell her that they should go to the courthouse that day and get married. And looking back at it now, it made sense. His girl had always been a romantic, how many times had he made Danny plan the perfect date for them?
And if Rowan wanted romance, then Steve would just have to deliver. How often had she done something just to make him smile? All those hikes, for one, Rowan hated hiking, hated camping, hated being out in nature, but she went to be with him, because it made him happy.
But even though Wo Fat told him that Rowan would say yes to any proposal from him that had even a sprinkle of romance. Even Rowan had told him that she wasn't against the idea of marrying him, she just wanted him to propose to her properly like he had been willing to do with Catherine. Still he worried. Irrationally he worried whether or not she'd say yes to him, whether or not she had changed her mind.
The ring Wo Fat had given him waited in the hotel safe. Nestled behind his badge, his gun and their passports. It had been in the back of his mind ever since Wo Fat had given it to him. The circlet of rose gold would look like bejeweled ivy on her finger. He kept imagining it there, he wanted to know if it would shine the way it did in his mind.
But it was obviously stolen.
He wanted to be mad, but Wo Fat was right, that ring was Rowan's. That ring would get a yes from her before he even asked the question. And there was no way in hell he could have proposed to her with the ring he had gotten Catherine, which was why he had gotten store credit for it, but he hadn't been able to find a suitable ring for Rowan, nor did he have the money for one that she deserved.
Steve found himself looking at Rowan's face, his fingers entangled in her hair, remembering the words Wo Fat had told him sitting on that boat in the middle of the Tokyo bay.
When you decide to do things right, call me, I know everything she wants and I can make it happen.
He slipped out of bed, out from under her arms, and out into the cold world. He had a whole plan that he would need help putting into action and he wanted it to be a surprise.
He slipped out into the hallway with his phone already to his ear. He shot one last look at Rowan who was still asleep in their bed and felt a twinge at leaving her. But once the call connected, he shut the door.
"I've decided to do it. How quickly can you get it done?" he asked instead of saying hello.
There was silence on the other end and then a sigh. A smile crept up on Steve's face. He was really going to do this and he wasn't afraid at all… mostly.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Rowan awoke to the bed shifting and Steve sliding on top of her. Immediately her arms came up to encircle his neck, her fingers brushed against the hair on the back of his neck. She moaned when he began to press soft but insistent kisses to the edges of her mouth.
"Mmmm, morning my baby," she whispered sleepily to him as his hands found their way under her to press her chest closer to his. She opened her eyes lazily and let her hands drift under his shirt. What was his shirt doing on? She made sure to throw that damn shirt as far away as she possibly could the night before. "Did you go somewhere?"
"I went for a run," he told her between kisses, his hands dipping lower causing her to lose her train of thought.
She found herself trailing a series of kisses down his jaw before she remembered to be mad that he left her alone in a hotel room to go for a silly old run. "Why didn't you wake me?" she asked.
Steve pulled his head out of her neck to stare at her, his eyes glimmered in the morning light, that breathtaking sky blue she was used to. His nose pressed against hers lightly like he was about to give her an Eskimo kiss.
"It was early, I wanted to let you sleep," he replied. Mm, how thoughtful.
He still needed to be punished though. She sunk her nails into the skin of his lower back and dragged them slowly up to his shoulder blades. The startled gasp that broke out from behind his clenched teeth warmed the skin of her shoulder as he pressed into her touch, arching his back up to get every inch of that motion.
When he could breathe again, when he was hovering over her again, she found that the smirk playing across her lips was mirrored on his face. "You're playing a dangerous game Miss. Pierce," he warned her.
She licked her lips and then kissed him quick, pulling away before his tongue could delve into her mouth. The growl that echoed through the room caused her to laugh and for Steve to dig his fingers into her sides.
Rowan squealed as he tickled her. Her hips bucked against his as she struggled to get away from him, though she was only half trying. They laughed together until his mouth slammed down on hers and then there was a different reason for Rowan to be grinding against Steve's hips. Their hands found their ways under clothes once more, trying to pry themselves loose of any constraints.
His lips left hers so she could pull his shirt off and revel in his rippling chest. She was pantingly frantic to get her teeth into his shoulder, to feel him in places she didn't remember having until he awoke them. But there was something on his face, a sort of fear she only saw when he worried about losing her.
"I… I love you," came out of him and Rowan found herself coming to a standstill. It wasn't often that Steve said those words to her, yes he'd reciprocate if she said them to him first, but they very rarely came out of him first.
In fact the last time he had said it to her first was because she was demanding he say them, because she was pretty sure she was going to die.
"What have you done?" she asked immediately and Steve faltered.
"Done?" he echoed.
"Yes, either you've done something to upset me or something has happened. Do we need to run? Is the Yakuza back?" she asked sitting up.
Steve's eyebrows furrowed, she could see his one track mind was frantically trying to find a way to get them back to what they had started.
"Rowan, I just wanted to say it to you," he said and Rowan had to think about that for a minute. Steve was very guarded with his feelings the way she was guarded about her family and her past. It wasn't like him to just volunteer emotions like that.
Looking into his eyes she knew then that he was lying. Something was wrong and he didn't want to tell her what it was.
"Oh… okay," she said softly being sure to watch his eyes. "I love you too."
His smile seemed genuine, his kisses seemed sincere but there was something he wasn't telling her. She thought of all the times he had pushed her away when his emotions got too much for him. And it was at that moment that she realized that Steve was thinking about breaking things off with her.
But she didn't want to argue with him at this moment. She wanted him over her, on her and in her. So even though she knew something was wrong she threaded her fingers through his hair and dragged him back down to the bed. His mouth like liquid metal against her skin, branding her, claiming her, finding those apex points and stroking the fire between them both. She tried to keep her mind on the task at hand, she wanted to lose herself in the pleasure, but her mind wasn't in it.
She was going to have to convince Steve to stay with her.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve had to lie to Rowan to get her to let him go.
They were supposed to have dinner together, she had reminded him, how could anyone need him that late at night? Well, it was only six o'clock so it wasn't that late but still. He told her that the new Governor had loaned him out to the Royal Bahamas Police, for a severe case they had and he had no choice but to go seeing as he gave himself vacation time without asking.
About a month of vacation time actually.
Rowan looked so upset that he was leaving that it almost broke his heart. But this was for her and he knew, if he did this right, she'd love the surprise he was creating.
He had had a long talk with Wo Fat about what he wanted done, and the man was clear that there was no way that he could propose that night, not with the plan that he wanted to enact. Then he said that he'd have to be there to plan it all and Sin Nombre would have to come with him so they could get everything done by Steve's deadline.
Steve had not been okay with that. He didn't want Nahele to be left alone.
"But he won't be alone," Wo had told him. "He'll be with Jian."
True and she was probably the best adult to be left alone with out of the three he had staying at his house at that moment. But he wasn't about to do it without seeing if it was okay first. Steve had asked for Nahele to be put on the phone. Wo had woken the boy up, put the phone to his ear and Steve had heard he kid fearfully ask if something had happened.
That too almost broke his heart. His poor kid was so worried that something was going to happen to his new parents and he'd be left alone and that was entirely Steve and Rowan's fault. From now on they would have to be so much more careful, if only because if he got his way, once he married Rowan he'd be adopting Nahele too. Like she said he could, or should.
He spoke to Nahele, promised him that everything was alright and then launched into the reason he was calling. Nahele had been stoked. Steve proposing to Rowan? Hell yeah he'd be okay to borrow Wo and Sin Nombre to help set that up for her. He'd even promise to keep it a secret so Rowan had no idea it was coming.
Then Con and Wo packed their stuff up and headed to Paradise Island. They couldn't ask Rowan for a jump either, so they had to come the old fashioned way.
And it took them almost 12 hours, but they were due to land soon and Steve was going to have to pick them up.
So, he got himself out of dinner with Rowan with a not so clever lie, rented a car and went to go pick them up from a little private airstrip.
It was silly but Steve was so excited to see both Wo Fat and Sin Nombre that he hugged them both. He was also equally surprised that both of them hugged him back, albeit quite awkwardly. When he let go the two of them exchanged glances as if wondering what that was about and then turned back to him.
"You okay?" Wo Fat asked and Steve sort of half shrugged.
"I'm nervous I guess," he said and Wo Fat just shook his head.
"It's fine, we've got this," he said.
Once they were in the car Wo Fat laid out all the plans that he already had in motion as apparently once Steve had hung up on him, Wo Fat had gone straight to work.
"Right, you called Danny, and he and I linked up. He's made it abundantly clear that he wants Best Man, and that meant more responsibility, so he's in charge of getting everyone on board. That being said, Danny will be coming down with Chin and Grover tomorrow. Jian, Renee and Kono are going to be coming later tomorrow once the kids are done school, he figured missing one day of school wouldn't be too bad. They'll be bringing Nahele, Charlie and Grace and Grover's kids. Danny called your sister, she, Matty and Joan will be landing sometime the following day, they'll be keeping Danny posted on their ETA from my understanding they'll be cutting it close."
"What about Adam?"
"I don't know who that is."
"Kono's husband."
"Oh, he's coming with her."
Steve nodded.
"That's not all we did," Sin Nombre said from the back and Wo Fa sighed.
"Right, well, we invited some people from our side. We also have Armando and JC and the Liang's coming down from our side. The rest are your all your friends. Danny said he called around. So we have your cop friends King or something…" "—Duke." "…whatever, him and his wife are coming. The past Governor and his wife will be coming too. Oh and someone named Max? Yeah him and his wife are coming too. We've also talked to a florist on the island so I'm going to be picking that up. And by we, I mean me, I've been doing all the calling, that one ate and slept and packed for us."
"Hey, it was a hard job packing all of your suits," Sin Nombre snapped. "And I made dinner!"
Wo just shook his head and kept on going. "I'm pretty sure the hotel will have the set up we need. We really only need the ballroom, but to set it up we're going to need it for the next two days. She wouldn't want anything formal, so it'll be a quick change between events. Put the chairs back to the tables, clear of a space to dance, buffet style, I've been told Kamekona and Flipper, who are also coming, have demanded to be caterers. Is that okay?"
"Yeah. Just make sure no fish."
"I know what my sister likes, thank you very much." But he still pulled out his phone and made note of that before turning to Steve again "Right, Alex owes Ro a favour and we wanted him to do the music, but he's giving us shit. You'll have to call him tomorrow."
Alex Lockman gave Wo Fat and Sin Nombre shit? And he was still alive?
"Fine I can do that."
"Oh and we booked rooms for everyone, different wing of the hotel from you guys just because… you know… we don't want Ro to bump into anyone. They should be good as of tomorrow."
Steve paused. "How are you paying for all of this?"
"Fake credit cards and our emergency fund. I know Ro will pay me back though."
"It's not too much is it?"
"Naw, don't you worry about that. Ro can afford it."
But Steve didn't like the sound of that. He wanted to help pay for this too, but if it was wildly out of control then he wasn't sure he'd be able to afford it. Even if he was doing half.
Sin Nombre leant forward. "Think of this as part of our wedding gift. If you're worried about payment. Chop it in four and there you go, more affordable."
"Thanks."
After that the two men were quiet. They got back to the hotel, Steve returned the car while Sin Nombre and Wo Fat got out to make their reservation. But when he got to where they were supposed to be, they weren't at the front desk.
He went to the next concierge and only had to say: "My two friends, uh… with the…"
"Scars? Yeah, he and his friend are in the back," she said and the waved for him to go into the back office where Wo Fat was standing dangerously close to the general manager and Sin Nombre was in the process of unpacking a bag of cash onto a desk.
"Will this be sufficient to book out the ballroom for two days?" Wo Fat asked and the general manager nodded.
"And how much would you like as a kick back so my friends and I can come and go as we please?"
Steve had never seen a man move that fast before. As Steve watched the man fill his pockets with all the cash he could carry Wo Fat turned back to him with a large smile.
"See I told you that I had this under control."
Steve tried not to wince. He was starting to think that maybe he should have just called Danny instead of Wo Fat.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
The following morning Steve managed to ditch Rowan again by booking her a day of spa treatments and massages. She had been so disappointed that he was leaving again that he couldn't even enjoy the sex she was trying to engage him in.
Still he managed to shrug her off and make it to the ballroom which had quickly become Wo Fat's base of operations.
He was happy to find that Danny was already there having left the night before and arrived early that morning.
The two hugged, Danny hit him with some congratulations, told him everyone was really excited for this next step that Steve and Rowan would be taking and then assured him that Nahele would be along sometime that afternoon having already boarded the plane.
He was then made aware that Chin and Grover and Adam had come with Danny that morning. Kono having decided that Steve could use the added help and sending her husband earlier than expected. Chin and Grover were often on tasks that Wo Fat had sent them on, one being to confirm that they had the right flowers and the delivery time for tomorrow.
As soon as Danny was done with his greeting Wo Fat was handing Steve a phone. "Call Alex, I need him and the Doctors here by tomorrow afternoon at the latest. Also, I have your guitar and I've managed to go through the songs for a one that you can sing. It's flagged with the napkin right now."
Steve nodded taking the phone from Wo Fat and dialing Alex.
Alex answered with a: "I don't care what you threaten me with, I'm not coming all the way out to the Bahamas when I have a score of groupies willing to…"
"Cut the shit, Alex, you owe me," Steve said and for a second Alex was quiet.
"How do you figure, McGarrett?"
"How do I… remember when you were in a TSA office after trying to sue my girl?"
"And I pulled the lawsuit! That's it. We're even."
"Yeah well that wasn't the only thing on their hit list, I talked them down, you owe me."
It was a lie, a complete and utter lie but he figured Alex was too stupid to figure that out.
"They had more?"
"Yeah, you were gonna be ruined and ODing on the weekends if they got their way," Steve lied. "Now, you owe me, and I need you to come down."
"Fine, fine, you want me down, then I want something," Alex said. "Something small."
Steve let Wo Fat put the sheet music into his hands, music for the song he wanted to sing in his hands. He carefully looked it over, seemed to be a song that Rowan had been practicing a lot recently.
"Yeah? And what's that?"
He was figuring a price, some sort of monetary compensation instead Alex said: "I want a song. I heard her new singer guy practicing vocals for it and I want it."
"I mean… I unno if I can promise that."
"It shouldn't be hard it's not promised to anyone and I want it," he said.
"I can ask her. What's the name?"
"Girls Like You."
Steve glanced down to the sheet music in his hand. Like he was literally holding the music to that song at that moment. It was fate.
"Oh uh… Girls Like You… actually yeah, I could swing that," Steve said and caught a look of surprise on Wo Fat's face. "You get down here by tomorrow morning and I'll let you take the song."
Alex agreed, but Steve had a hard time hearing anything he had to say because Wo Fat was asking: "What song? What are you talking about?"
Steve hung up on Alex and then turned onto Wo Fat. "He only wanted a song, so I said he could have it."
"Not Girls Like You?" Wo asked with a scoff but when Steve nodded, he groaned. "Are you shitting me right now? You gave him Girls Like You?"
"I don't see what the problem is… it's just a song…"
"Yeah, a song that doesn't belong to you," Wo cried. "A song Rowan was vehemently ensuring wouldn't go to Alex. You give that song to him and she's going to murder you."
Why… why did Wo Fat know more about Rowan and her music business than Steve did? Seriously she never talked to him about this sort of stuff.
"Right, fine, so it'll be our first argument as an engaged couple," Steve said though a shiver of apprehension ran down his spine, he really hoped that this wasn't what ended them.
"You're an idiot," Wo growled and then turned his back on Steve. "You're not allowed to help anymore, you're a goddamn liability."
He stared at Wo Fat for a moment, watching as he went back to whatever he had been doing which was inventory. He looked the man up and down, fixed his most seriously look on his face and said: "I want you to teach me how to dance."
Wo stopped counting tables and then turned to him. "What?"
"I want you to teach me how to waltz. Like how you and Ro do. I want to learn that. Teach me that."
Wo Fat sighed heavily, clearly not impressed with Steve at that moment. He stopped whatever he was doing and finally turned to him. "Have you any previous practice?"
"Uh… no? But Rowan didn't, right?"
"Rowan's a figure skater she's knows how to move in a flowing manner, and besides the man's in control, she just has to follow. Steve, I can't teach you to waltz as well as me in one day."
"Well… can you try?"
Wo Fat groaned, hung his head and then with one very heavy, weary sigh said: "I should have stayed in Japan."
But he agreed, and that was all Steve needed.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Yesterday had been busy.
Nahele practically sprinted into that ballroom to hug Steve which was exactly when Steve could see the giant black eye his kid was sporting. Then there was an argument with Wo Fat and Sin Nombre about how they probably should have mentioned that their kid was having issues with bullies. And no, them dealing with it, did not mean that it was dealt with or not important anymore.
Then he had asked how Danny had not known this had happened. And that's when he found out that Danny found out after the fact, and that, like Wo and Sin Nombre, he thought it best not to tell them yet as they both over reacted when it came to Nahele.
He had shit friends and his kid had shit uncles.
He might have stayed a little more angrier about the whole situation if it weren't for Nahele's sudden gushing about how cool his Uncle Con was for beating up not only the bully but the bully's dad and that is was totally wicked that his Uncle Oz made a phone call and they both got in trouble. So much trouble, in fact that his bully pulled out of school.
Steve had glanced at Wo Fat who just shrugged.
"He worked for a Samoan gang. I know the boss. Told them that me and his man got into a dust up and I wanted no retribution to me or my family. Man was terrified, had no idea I was on island in the first place. We agreed that bully and his dad would be leaving the island."
Which was when Nahele was made aware that that happened, apparently he had no idea, thought the kid had just left the school. However, that was also the moment that he saw the light in his kid's eyes change. He was no longer the cool one. Uncle Oz and Uncle Con had that moniker now.
Wo had then remarked that it was a good thing that the kid was there because Wo could not teach Steve to waltz, the man didn't get it. And putting him with Danny had not helped either. So the kid was going to substitute from then on in.
And from there Steve sort of got it, but not by much. Some improvement Wo had said. But Steve didn't have time to practice anymore. Rowan kept texting and calling so Steve had to go for the night. But as the guests were still arriving his Five-0s were to ensure that they all stayed away from wherever Steve and Rowan were.
And since Steve convinced Rowan to a room service and sex night in, their guests could go wherever they wanted.
The following morning, Wo had him paired with Adam for waltz lessons as he was busy waltzing Jian around, and then when even Adam said that Steve was a lost cause, he passed him off to Kono whom he attempted to do a spin with and dropped. That was her out of the running for waltz partner.
Steve got a break to practice the song he was going to sing to her, and because Wo was having a hard time scaring up waltz partners now that it was clear that Steve was lethal and not in the good way.
Then he surprised him with something Steve didn't think he had to worry about.
Wo had prepared a run through.
"Right so we have the suit you're going to wear, and the one you're changing into for the ceremony," Wo said showing him both and suddenly Steve was shaking. "So I've already set everything up. You're gonna ask Ro to go shopping for a special fancy date tonight, I've got a clerk on the payroll that's gonna make sure she picks the right dress. She's going to get seated first, you're going to go out with the guitar, sing your song, say your words and then propose. Depending on what she says we'll go from there."
Depending on what she says? This was all hinging on her saying yes. Wo thought she'd say no?
"Assuming she says yes, and I don't see why she wouldn't, you're going to bring her back here. Kid's demanded to be the one to walk her down. You're gonna leave her at the door, I'm going to set her up, by the time I get back in you're going to have to be changed…"
He paused there, he paused because he was staring at Steve who had suddenly started to gasp. Like he couldn't breathe, like the weight of what he was about to do was suffocating him.
Wo looked him up and down and then said: "You're hyperventilating, why are you hyperventilating?"
"I think he's getting cold feet," Sin Nombre said coming to stand beside Wo.
Wo narrowed his eyes at him. "You can't get cold feet, this was your idea!" he thundered. But Steve couldn't stop it, he was suddenly panicking. Dear god what was he doing?
"This is a bad idea… what am I thinking? I'm not ready for this big of a step."
Wo exchanged glances with Sin Nombre and then got right in his face, gripping him by his shirt and making Steve look down into his face.
"Look me in the eye! This is very important, are you listening?" when Steve nodded Wo's voice dropped lower. "I just spent forty-eight hours planning this for you, if you try to run out on this I'm going to fucking shoot you in the spine, you got me?"
Steve narrowed his eyes at him. "Are you packing right now?"
"I'm always packing," Wo growled and then he shot a glance to Sin Nombre. "And even if I'm not that man's a walking arsenal."
"But we're on vacation."
"Best time for anyone to strike!" Sin Nombre cried. "Best to be prepared, there's no telling what might come for us. Specially with your girlfriend and her habit of getting into trouble."
Steve looked back and forth between the two men and then sighed. "Right, right, sorry, yeah… no… I can do this."
"Yes you can," Danny said. He then turned to Wo Fat. "This is going to be intermittent. I'm his Best Man I'll handle him."
"You better, I just had to fight Kono for Maid of Honor and I'm lucky to be alive," Wo said pointing at Danny. "Keep him inline and keep him here, I still have things to do."
Danny nodded and herded Steve away, promising that he'd get Steve ready for what he was going to do. Tonight, tonight he was going to take the biggest step in his life, commit to the longest, and what he hoped to be the happiest commitment of his life.
Tonight, he was going to propose to the girl who held his heart and then he was going to marry her.
