Chapter 343
They were only back for two weeks when the news dropped. Grace was dating Will. Or whatever the fifteen-year-old version was.
Danny was livid. The bitchfest was astronomical, like literally. Steve had done what he could to minimize it but Danny was going on a mile a minute about Grover knowing the whole time and how that was his little girl and she had been lying to him, but she was a teenager and that made sense, but Grover lying was something worse because they were supposed to be buddies.
But it got worse when Danny found out that the reason Grover knew was because of Rowan. And Rowan knew because Nahele had been chaperoning their dates. That was Steve's fault. Rowan had told them all that before the secondary Japan Incident, Steve hadn't realized that Danny hadn't been made aware yet, then again Rowan did threaten Grover's golfing abilities so the man had probably taken her very seriously.
Then of course, Danny had yelled at Nahele, or at least he had tried to. Nahele had turned a wide eyed, tear-filled look to him and Steve lost it. Danny stopped being his best friend and became a hostile that Steve needed to deal with. Steve had gotten in between them rather quickly and then forced him out of his house. And by forced him, he put Danny in an arm hold and frog marched him out of his house where he then literally picked Danny up and tossed him towards his Camaro. After that Danny had gone to Chin's to commiserate.
Danny had been pissy ever since, so Steve was a little surprised when he turned up for their monthly poker night with a giant box in his hands.
Especially in the get up he was in, cause he was basically in a suit and he usually came to poker night in a more casually getup.
"Hey, hey, hey. Very, uh… formal for… it's poker night," Steve said. "Uh… kinda surprised you're here."
Steve was in jeans and a shirt Ro had bought him in the Bahamas, a flowing short sleeved button up with little pink flowers all over it. She thought it looked cute on him, brought out the blue in his eyes. He had already had to replace the buttons twice because she liked to rip it open. And it wasn't like Steve was complaining, he loved every second.
"Yeah, well, I'm not staying, so…"
"Kay so I know you're mad at me for literally throwing you out of my house, but you were making Nahele cry," Steve reminded him.
"I am not mad at you for throwing me out of the house, Steven. I'm mad because you and your kid have been helping my daughter lie to me about her new boyfriend," Danny snapped. "And that is not why I'm staying."
Yeah Steve wasn't going to argue about this anymore, so he went straight to teasing.
"Oh then you're scared of my game? I totally understand. I promise I will take it easy on you."
"That would be funny if you had ever won a hand against me, ever in you're whole life. And we both know if I was going to be worried about anything it would be that your wife is going to count cards and give you the answers," Danny snapped back.
"My wife? She's chaperoning a dance tonight, she's not even gonna be here," Steve said. "And she's taking 'Hele with her, which is a bit annoying cause I wanted to get him in on the game, but as you can imagine he picked her."
That wasn't true either. Rowan just got to him first. By the time Steve asked him, which was the day before, the whole chaperoning of the younger grade's dance had already been planned for like a week.
"What a coincidence, Rachel called. She had to move her flight up. I too will be a chaperone at Grace's Winter Formal."
Already Steve was nervous. Rowan hadn't been home when Danny accosted their kid but she had heard about it. The second she came through the door, Nahele had been on her, telling her what Danny did and how she had promised not to tell.
But she hadn't told. Steve had.
Then Rowan had been angry for two reasons.
She also hadn't seen Danny since then which meant that, if she came downstairs and saw him, there would probably be some kind of cat fight in the Livingroom.
Danny dropped the box he was holding onto the snack table with an apathetic: "Here are the sandwiches I promised."
Steve blinked his eyes. "You brought sandwiches, but you're not staying?"
Danny was helping himself to the pretzels, that he probably shouldn't be eating if he wasn't staying. "Yeah, I'm from New Jersey. We take our sandwich commitments very seriously."
Steve nodded. "I know. Thank you for the sandwiches. Mahalo. And I'm sorry you can't stick around."
His wife also liked him speaking Hawaiian to her, and she'd always respond with this French he didn't know she knew but best believe he was having her use that in bed. Thank you to Canada and their French Immersion program.
"And the good thing is, I get to make sure her new little boyfriend isn't you know… getting too handsy."
"Ah so you're going to this Formal to spy on her," Steve said. "You know, uh, since she was a little skittish about you finding out it probably wouldn't be a good idea to be this… involved, you know?" Danny turned back to him and Steve just kept going. "Yeah, you know, just don't over react. In fact this is a great opportunity for you to win, uh, brownie points, cool dad points."
For a moment Danny just stared at him like he was crazy. Then he asked: "Nahele brought a girl home yet?"
Steve wasn't sure where he was going with that. "Uh… no… but uh…"
"Yeah, when Nahele brings a girl home, you can talk to be about brownie and cool dad points," Danny said. "I don't want to be a cool dad. Cool dad has a teenager that ends up pregnant or in jail or both."
Really? That's what he thought of Grace. Didn't he know how great his daughter was?
But before they could delve into that argument Rowan came down the stairs, humming as she went and Danny no longer had Steve's attention.
"Why are you in flipflops, you know how I hate the flipflops," she said as she came down in her little hunter green dress. She was wearing a matching pair of red bottom hunter green leather heels. She had started growing her hair out which meant it was past her chin, but she said it was at an in-between length that was hard to style, so she usually went with pin straight. And, oh boy, did pin straight chestnut brown hair make his baby look like a sex-kitten.
"They're my casual lounge at home flipflops," he said and she turned back to him an ice queen withering stare on her face. But that also might have been the angle and the make up she had one.
"Steven, if you want to take this dress off of me tonight, you'll put on regular old man slippers and throw those damn things out."
"What if I just want to push the skirt up?" he asked his voice low and husky as he crossed to her, his hands moving to her waist. If he got her up against his chest she'd be done for.
"Anything you wanna do to me you can. I'll be all yours just for the love of god take those stupid flip-flops off," she purred, pressing herself against him, her hands resting just below his collarbones.
Yes. Fuck yes!
Steve kicked those flip-flops off of his feet and then went to kiss her, his face angling downwards to capture her lips as she tilted those blood red lips up to him.
"How about you don't do any of that in front of company?" Danny said. Rowan turned an unimpressed glare to him. He just smiled at her and hit her with a sarcastic wave. "Hi. Nice to see you too Ro."
Rowan, however, was not impressed by him. She looked him up and down and then turned a patient smile back to Steve.
"Are you excited for boy's night?"
Steve opened his mouth to tell her he was but Danny cut her off.
"You can stop with the stink eye and the silent treatment Miss. Ice Queen," he snapped. "You're the one who fucked up here. How could you possibly think it was okay to let your sixteen year old chaperone a date between my Grace and Will Grover? What were you thinking? I'll tell you what you were thinking. It was nothing! You were being a conniving… selfish…"
Steve took half a step towards Danny that had the man backing up himself worried that Steve was going to lash out at him. Which was fair, Steve very much was about to punch Danny. But Rowan put a hand to his arm, pulled him back and then stepped forward.
"Listen here Williams," she snapped turning a cold and glittering ice queen smile to him. "I've been remarkably forgiving considering but I know all about you accosting Nahele. So let me be perfectly clear about this. If you continue to make my son upset about this, so help me, Danny, I will drop your ass in the ocean, are we clear?"
Danny stared at her and the angry glare on her face. Already Steve was moving forward, not just to protect Danny but because Rowan was crackling. He could see the orange bolts skating up her arms already which meant she was getting ready to void and that was not good.
He got a hold of her arm and the crackling hissed to a stop. She turned her angry eyes back onto Steven and he could see the white fading out of them. Jesus she had been about to drop Danny in the ocean then and there.
"Rowan," he said carefully. "I don't know why I have to tell you this, but you shouldn't be using your powers on me or my friends."
Rowan turned back to Danny with a scowl. "If he keeps making Nahele upset he's not considered my friend anymore," she growled and then turned back to Steve. "You told me yourself that he was in Nahele's face, and the kid was practically in tears."
"Yes, and that's bad, and I said I dealt with it," he said and then he too turned a dark glare onto Danny. "Buddy, I love you, but if you make my kid cry at the Formal I'm going to punch you out."
"Fair," Danny said having taken a few precautionary steps away from the pair. He cleared his throat and moved away from her.
"Right, well I have to go, Ro, I'll see you at the dance," Danny said heading for the door again.
"Kay, and thanks for the sandwiches bud!" Steve called after him.
"I'd never do that," Steve said as the door closed behind Danny.
"We're supposed to be a united front," Rowan said the second the door closed behind Danny.
"And I agreed that he needed to stop harping on Nahele, but you can't just drop our friends into the ocean when you're mad at them. Nor is it nice to threaten them with your powers." Rowan tsked at him and he looked her up and down. He put a hand out to her again. "Are you still charged?"
"No, I think you sucked the last bit of it out of me."
He almost said good but he didn't want her to be upset or think that he didn't like her powers, he just didn't like how she was using them now. How she seemed to be rather dependent on them.
"Okay, well… let's wait before we charge you again, okay?"
"But what if it's an emergency?"
"You can pull from me, I won't mind. Especially if it's an emergency."
"You know I don't like doing that…"
"Yes, I know, but I'd rather have a little chest pain then worry. So you pull from me if you need to, okay?"
Rowan nodded but he didn't quite believe that she'd do it. She didn't like pulling from him, she never wanted to hurt him like that. She smiled prettily up at him as if she hadn't just been about to drop Steve's best friend into the ocean. As if the conversation was over, which was fair because in her mind it was.
She smoothed out his shirt carefully as his hands gripped her waist to keep her in front of him. He loved this, being so goddamn domestic. And he had thought he'd never be good at it.
"Okay so, remember, this is going to help you. Mamo blinks when he's lying. Dog plays with his clothes if he's bluffing and fixes his hair if he has a good hand. Jerry twitches, Kamekona extra sweats and Grover gets all shifty and silent, especially if it's a good hand. Chin has a vein in his jaw that twitches when he's lying, so if he'll do that if he's bluffing. If he has a good hand, he won't stop touching his cards," she said. "And you. You overcompensate. You either smile too much or get too serious."
The fact that she had all their tells down pat was terrifying. "Remind me to never play you in poker again, okay?"
"If I remind you, I won't make any money."
He smiled happily at her, kissing her solidly only to hear a disgusted groan on the stairs.
"Come on, it's one night, stop sucking face like you guys are separating for years or something."
Steve smiled up at Nahele, he didn't even care that he was embarrassing his kid. He was, however, completely unchanged and he was supposed to be ready.
"'Hele, we have to leave in like twenty minutes," she chided and her son winced.
"I know but I can't decide on what to wear, and…"
"What about what I put out?" she interrupted him and Nahele faltered.
"Yeah no, it's great, but I also grew out of the pants," he said and then it was Rowan's turn to have narrowed eyes of confusion.
"Stop growing," she growled and Nahele turned his frustrated eyes to Steve.
"Can you help me pick my outfit please?"
Steve had never felt more honored in his life. "Yeah, course, bud, I'll be right up," he said. Nahele turned away and as soon as he was gone Steve turned to Rowan with a big giant grin on his face.
She shook her head at him but urged him onward. God he loved this, being domestic with Ro, being a dad to the kid that would be his once he gave him the adoption papers for Christmas.
His life was literally perfect right now.

Grace had made him promise not to spy on him, or to make a big deal out of anything he saw at this dance. Then as soon as the car came to the stop she was out of the car and with her friends. If she wasn't in a dress she might have tucked and rolled to get away from him faster. He was her father, not the Ebola patient she was making him out to be.
He had the woman handing out nametags ask him if he had handcuffs in the most sexually charged way possible, he literally could not get away from her faster, and then he found Rowan and Nahele standing by the buffet tables. Rowan helping herself to punch, Nahele picking up cupcakes and waving off girls saying he didn't want to dance.
Nahele was looking like a dapper little mini-Steve right down to the way he had styled his hair. He was in a Navy-blue suit that he had used for Rowan and Steve's wedding and stood a good foot taller than his mother. He was clearly the hot upperclassman that all the girls were eyeing, but he didn't seem to care.
Danny immediately went for the people he knew, even if he was mad at them at that moment.
He hit them with a "Hey" and the two of them nodded to him. His gaze went out to the dancefloor where he could clearly see Grace with her girlfriends and of course Will.
Danny shook his head. He had been a fifteen year old once, he knew what it was like, what that boy was probably thinking and he didn't like it. That was his baby girl and he didn't trust her with anyone.
Rowan must have noticed where his gaze had landed, must have recognized where his mind was going because she leant in real close to him and hissed: "Williams, if you don't think I won't pop a portal right here on this dancefloor than you have underestimated how petty I am."
Danny leant right back in. "Uh… Steve says you're not charged, so I think I'm safe."
"I will pull from Steve and then lie through my teeth about an emergency," she said and then turned those ice queen blue eyes back to him. "Try me, bitch."
The two of them glared at one another before Danny said: "I just want to talk to him."
"Hell no," Rowan snapped. "Boy, they are at their Winter Formal, you ruin this for Grace and she will never forgive you, you hear me?"
Danny huffed and Rowan shook her head. "You can talk to them after the formal, but not here. Not here in front of all their friends."
Danny turned a glare to her. "And how would you feel if Nahele was keeping a secret girlfriend from you?"
"Nahele doesn't have a secret girlfriend," Rowan said with a scoff. "He's technically seeing three different girls that he hasn't told me about. Nicole, Amber and Leilani."
Beside her Nahele choked on his bite of cupcake.
"There's also Alanna, Kani and someone named Sam that is either a boy or a girl, not sure yet," she said.
"How… how do you know that?"
Rowan turned to him and said: "I set Sandy to Smart House mode for your computer and phone, it tracks everything you do. I have it filtering out the things I don't care about though."
Nahele had gone ashen but Rowan just smiled. "That's right I know all about the pictures girls send you and you send them, and the drugs and the drinking at the parties and I haven't said a single thing until now."
Nahele just blinked his eyes at her. "I know it's bad, but I'm not doing it to control you. I'm doing it to make sure nothing happens to you. So that if something does happen, I have all the information. That's very important in case you or your friends OD. At least I'll know what you're on."
Danny let out half a laugh. "Can you put the Smart House on Grace's phone?"
"No cause you'll use it for evil."
Beside her Nahele whispered: "She bugged my phone."
In her purse her phone rang again and Rowan found that it was Sandy calling her. Master. Reporting an Emergency. That was odd.
"Right, I'm going to take this outside, you make sure he doesn't bug Grace," she said to Nahele who was still processing the news of what his mother was doing. "And when we get back we can argue about the breach of privacy, okay?"
"Okay," he said softly and then Rowan was heading off the dancefloor and out of the lobby before she picked up the phone.
"Hey aniue what's the emergency?"
"Nothing too big, I uh… I think I left something in your car can you go check for me?"
The last time he had been in that car was three months ago, what could he have left in it?
"Yeah sure," she said, as she made her way out of the lobby and then outside. The second she was out of the building the doors behind her slammed shut. She turned, saw men in black arming the door with what had to be an incendiary device and then rushing away and she stopped moving entirely.
"Wo… Wo… what just happened?" she asked and for a second he was quiet.
"What do you mean?"
"Men in black tactical gear just locked the doors," she whispered.
"Mm, yes I was hoping they'd do that once you got farther away but I guess they didn't listen," he said.
Okay… so he had been expecting this. "Wo. What's going on?"
"I have a terrorist that requested permission for a hostage situation. I found out that you were in the vicinity just now, had them hold off until I got you out of the building. Do you think you could wait a bit before you get Steven involved?"
Rowan blinked her eyes, her brother had done WHAT?
"Wo!" she shouted and he went quiet. "Nahele's inside!"
Wo was silent for all of three fucking seconds before he said: "Well I didn't know he was with you Rowan! Sandy didn't specifically that he was… okay, okay, I'm going to call them, you call McGarrett, and if they don't listen to me, pull Con and have him go in hot, okay?"
But Rowan didn't want to wait, she wanted her kid back right that second. But Wo was right about one thing, she needed Steve for this, cause she was a parent and a wife now and she had to stop running head long into trouble like she had been doing. And she had promised her son that she'd not get in as much trouble anymore.
And, well, after Japan she had learned her lesson. So, she went to her car, peeled out of that parking lot and heading for home and her husband and her energizing ray.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
So far everything had been going great for McGarrett's Guys Only Poker night. Everyone who said they'd be there was there, minus Danny, and the food was all a hit.
"This is a sandwich fit for an Ali'I," Momo said to him.
"Yeah, this veggie melt's out of control," Jerry seconded.
Steve nodded. "Alright, thanks, Dog?" he asked and the man nodded.
"Beast steak sandwich I've ever eaten but if Beth asks you, I ate a salad."
"Fair, I know what it's like," he said "If Ro asks, I took the flipflops off."
"Deal," Dog cried offering him a hand to bump. He then turned to Kamekona. "Looks like you enjoyed yours brah."
"The jury's still out. I might need another one to make a decision," he said already going for another.
"Ignore him, McGarrett. Your sandwich game is on point, brother," Grover said.
"Nothing but the best for my boys you know that," Steve said as his phone rang again. It was Rowan again, but the first three times had been butt dials, which was ridiculous because she had her phone in her purse. So he hung up again.
And then he heard the tires squealing in the driveway.
Just like that, Steve was worried. Now the calls seemed like something else.
"STEVEN!"
No that couldn't be good. He got out of his seat, around the table and halfway to the door when Rowan burst through the door. But she wasn't looking for him, she was going for the door. Skirt balled up in her fists as she took the stairs two at a time.
Steve watched his wife, sans her shoes sprint up the stairs. She must have been screaming his name all while she ran up the front walk and she was still calling his name as she was upstairs rooting around in their room.
Steve excused himself to follow her a general sense of icy panic running through his veins.
"Steven!" he heard her cry again as he got to their room. "Where are you?!"
"Right here," he said shutting the door to their room once he realized that what she had was her energizer. What the hell did she need that for? "What's going on?"
"Nahele's in a hostage situation," she said breathlessly. She was eyeing the gauge that was on the side, as if deciding how much energy she would really need. From Steve's understanding she had it on low and that gave her more than enough power. She didn't need it to go any higher.
But it was what she said that had his heart constricting.
"A hostage situation? Rowan he was at the dance with you and Danny…"
"Yes and men with guns came in and locked the doors and put a bomb on one of them and Nahele's inside…"
"Rowan!" Steve snapped trying to get her attention as she was clearly panicking. "You were with him though…"
"See not then… Wo called and had me take the call outside the building and I got locked out…"
"Wo?"
"Yeah apparently these guys work with him sometimes or something… I unno he didn't realize I had Nahele with me or something so he only got me out before they hit…"
For godsake, what was happening right now? Steve pulled out his phone none of this had been reported, or at least no one had called him to tell him to deploy Five-0 and then 100% would if they thought there was a hostage situation that involved, Danny, Rowan and three of Five-0's kids. So that had to mean that she hadn't called the cops.
"So we need to go," Rowan said to him. "I'm going to charge myself, you're going to suit up and we're going to go get out boys… and Grace… and Will…"
Yeah, no. Charging head long into this situation was not a good idea. Nto when he had no idea where in the building Nahele was, not when terrorists would know, absolutely know, the best way to keep Steven out of that building was to threaten his kid.
"Rowan, we need a better plan than that, we can't just go in there blind…"
"My son is in a room with bad guys pointing guns at him!" she shrieked and Steve realized that Rowan had descended into a straight panic. "You're either coming with me or I'm going without you."
Before he could stop her she had put that energizer to her chest and pulled the trigger. He had only watched her do this a few times and he hated it, because she would grunt like she was in pain. This time was no different except her grunt was more a cry and she doubled over with the pain. Steve was certain he felt an echo of it himself and he knew then that she had amped the power.
She was gearing up for something big.
Steve put a hand out to stop her, to use his own power to deflect whatever she was planning, but she dropped into a portal before he could get a hold of her. He turned, knowing that she was trying to void to the banquet hall and he wasn't going to let it happen. In fact that's all her had to think, that he wanted her back with him, and he felt the void change to listen to him. He knew it was going to spit her out and he knew exactly where she was going to land. He managed to get to her just as she dropped.
The second she hit the ground Steve had her up in his arms to stop her from leaving him.
"Stop Rowan, we needed a better plan, just give me the chance to figure out what we're going to do!" he tried to tell her but Rowan was resisting him.
The protective mom instincts had kicked her into overdrive and now he was one of the bad guys.
Couldn't she see that he was trying to make sure that they all got out of this alive?!
"Let me go!" she was shouting at him, struggling to get his hands off of her, and he was stuck trying to get his wife to see reason and being the bad guy holding her in place.
But when she screamed this terrible, double voiced: "GET OFF!" there was a static boom and then he went flying.
In those moments before he plummeted down onto the poker table below the railing that led to the second floor, Steve realized that it wasn't just Rowan's voice he had heard in that screaming command. There was another one. A lower more masculine one that he didn't recognize.
But then he crashed into that poker table, destroying it with his own body and his friends were around him like the poker chips he had disrupted, but at least his friends wanted to know if he was alright.
And there, there in front of that railing, standing right where Rowan should have been before that explosion erupted out of her, staring down at him with cold, unfeeling, and very confused eyes was her brother.
Rowan was gone, and to add insult to injury she had pulled Wo Fat to put in her place. This was not how he wanted this night to go.
