Chapter 350
Today was a big day for the newly married couple. They were having their first brunch with other people as a newly married couple. On top of that they were having their first mini-family reunion as a newly married couple and they were both so excited. Rowan, of course, showing it more than Steve was.
Danny's sister was coming in for an insurance broker's team building event which was pretty cool, and, Mary was coming with Joanie and Danny's brother Matty, whom, Steve had just found out, was living with his sister. Yeah that was going to be a topic of discussion when they landed. Because what kind of sibling hides a relationship from another? Not even Rowan had done that, and her brother hated him.
It wasn't planned, the two Williams' siblings showing up at the same time, it was just a happy accident. Mary and Matty would be staying with the McGarrett's, but Danny's sister was staying at the hotel as her company was putting her up there.
They had agreed to a brunch with Danny and his younger sister, and then when they were done, they were going to pick up Mary, Matty and Joanie from the airport.
They were walking through the hotel and the set-up activities to go and meet his sister and Steve was looking around at each person wondering which was the youngest Williams? All while holding onto his wife for dear life who tripped once over by the pool and now, he didn't trust her to walk.
"So, which one is your sister?" Steve asked
"I don't know I'm looking."
As they went through watching insurance brokers going through three legged races and having pie eating contests, Rowan had a different question.
"Since when did insurance agents get to have this much fun?" Rowan asked.
"I uh… I don't know, does it look like I know?" he asked her sounding awfully annoyed for such a simple question.
"I wouldn't worry about it, buddy. If she's anything like you, I'm sure she's having a miserable time."
"She's nothing like me. I mean she's like a bucket of sunshine, the glass is always half full, you know?"
Rowan was ready to hit Danny's previous snippy comment with her own sassy remark. "Wonderful the world can't handle more than one Danno."
Danny shot her a scowl as they came to a stop by the beach. He was clearly not impressed.
"Great the two of you are piling on me now, is that it? What you got married and now you're not on my side anymore?" he asked her.
"See, see, why is it, whenever I said that the two you were siding with one another, you'd tell me I was crazy but now, now you're saying she's not on your side anymore? I'm bringing this up the next time we see Dr. Carlin, you're gonna answer to this."
"I'm not on anyone's side," Rowan repeated but Steve was already scowling.
"No, you married me. You're on my side. Forever," he growled pointing to the ring.
"I can still divorce you."
At that Danny laughed but Steve was scowling at her. Their argument was halted by Danny pointing out at the water where couples were paddling boarding together. Or teams they should said. One was blind folded and paddling, the other was behind them, holding on and steering them.
"That's my sister right there."
The woman he was pointing at was on a paddleboard with another guy. She was the one blind folded and she was doing really well, miles better than anyone else on the water, they were at least heading to shore.
She was taller than Danny, making him the shortest William's child that Steve had met, she had a mostly blond flip do that was short on the sides. And she very much did look like a ray of sunshine. In fact she looked very much like the rest of the Williams' clan on the attractiveness side.
"That's your sister?" Steve asked. "Danny, she's... she's pretty cute."
Rowan sighed and shook her head. "Standing right here, Steve."
"This coming from the girl who nearly tripped over herself over the pool boy ten minutes ago."
"I wasn't tripping over him I was just tripping," Rowan snapped but he didn't believe her. He had her hand in his when she went down on that pool side, and her head had been turned right towards that pool boy even as he watched her fall.
"Don't worry Ro. Not only do we both know Steve is never going to cheat on you, cause he's terrified your brothers will kill him. Bridget is also happily married."
Yeah, Steve wasn't going to take that lying down. Not when his sister had some guy's hands resting on her hips in a pretty suggestive manner. Well, it wasn't all that suggestive considering the activity they were engaged in, but Danny was unreasonable and it was pretty easy to send him over the edge of unreasonableness.
"Okay well why don't you tell him that? Because he's getting pretty handsy," Steve said, pointing to the partner she had on her paddleboard
"Handsy? He's spotting her!"
"He's doing the thing," Steve argued.
"Thing? What thing? He's spotting her."
"That is a man who just rounded first base and is getting ready to slide into second."
"Oh what do you know about bases?" Rowan asked, interrupting the argument before it could go any further. "Since we've gotten married you haven't been to a single base. You steal like every single one and go straight for home. Maybe you should take some lessons from that guy about bases."
At that Steve's jaw dropped and Danny was snickering again. "Excuse you, I happen to know your bases very well… and we have a kid. We've only had time for quickies and…" Steve glanced over to Danny who was moving off to go get to his sister who was now on dry land. "You know what I don't appreciate you outing me like that in front of Danny. If you gotta problem with the amount of attention I'm paying to your bases you can just tell me cause I can redirect my attention no problem… You wanna go off now? I can prove you wrong right here right now, where's the nearest washroom…"
"Cool your jets we have a bigger problem," Rowan hissed, her eyes never once leaving Danny and his sister.
"Oh really and what is that? The astonishing lack of blowjobs I haven't been getting since we got married?"
Rowan scowled at him and then gestured to the two siblings. "You know how I've been dreaming about a woman who's going to cheat on her husband?"
Steve followed Rowan's gaze and inwardly groaned. "Oh no…"
"Yeah…"
"No, please tell me it's not her…"
"I shit you not, it's those two," she whispered and Steve found himself biting his tongue. He had been teasing Danny he didn't wanna be right.
"Alright, Bridget, this is Steve, my partner. He will be picking up Matty today and bringing him here for our family reunion. Steve this is my baby sister Bridget."
He was going to introduce Rowan too but Bridget cut him off. "It's great to finally meet you. I've heard a lot about you."
"Oh, I hope it's mostly good."
Already Danny was wincing and Bridget gave him a pained look to match Danny's.
"Aw no, what does that look mean?"
"Well I mean, mostly it's good. Well, my mother called you a catch."
Steve seemed pleased with that. He turned to his wife his arms crossed over his chest. "She called me a catch Ro," he said to her before turning to Bridget. "I love your mom."
Rowan merely rolled her eyes and pressed herself into Steve's side. "He totally is a catch, when he's egos not too inflated, so thanks for blowing it up," she said and smiled at Bridget. "It's nice to meet you, I'm his wife, Rowan."
"Oh, you're the infamous Rowan, we've heard lots of stories about you too."
"From your mom or Danny?"
"Mostly Danny…"
"Alright, so all bad stories then," Rowan said with a teasing grin but shooting a challenging stare to Danny who just rolled his eyes.
"They're all entertaining though," she said. Steve was a little worried that this might slide into a convo about Rowan's powers seeing as he wasn't sure how much about Rowan's abilities Danny had told his parents.
"By the way, I know it's a little late, but thank you very much for the cookies you sent Danny and I when we were, uh, recovering in the hospital. That was very sweet."
"Oh yeah, no problem. How is the new liver?"
"It's good. Thank you very much. But I have been reading in these medical journals that sometimes the recipients of organ donations start taking on the traits of the donor," he said which earned an odd look from Rowan. "So I'm a little concern about that."
"Uh no… that was me. I told you that Steve."
"Yes and you mentioned you read it somewhere so I went and found my own literature to read…"
Rowan was shaking her head, she shot Bridget a dry glare. "Men, am I right?"
Bridget laughed and offered Rowan a fist bump of solidarity that Steve might have been more annoyed with if his phone didn't ring. He picked it up quickly and ignored Rowan's eyes as he took in his suit-up orders and then told them he'd be there in a few minutes.
When he turned around Rowan was frowning and the Williams siblings were now watching the two of them to see how this was going to go.
"Hey guys, I'm really sorry. I gotta rain check on brunch, okay?"
"No, not okay. Steven, I'm going to be a third wheel. And you promised me brunch!"
"We can have brunch any time," he said to her kissing her on the lips. "Also I don't know how long this is going to take so you're probably going to have to pick up Mary and Matty from the airport."
"I hate you," she growled but Steve was just smiling because he knew she didn't really mean it.
"That's a lie you love me," he said, and then once again pointed to the wedding ring on his hand. "Forever."
As he left Rowan called out: "I can still divorce you!" but he just waved and kept going. "Ugh. Men."
"Amen sister," Bridget said immediately falling into step beside her. And just like that, Danny became the third wheel for Brunch. And he could not wait to bitch about that to Steven… except he found something else to bitch about instead. Something that could potentially be way worse.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
As requested, Rowan had gone to meet Mary, Joanie and Matty at the airport after she was done with brunch with Danny and his sister.
It was really hard sitting there and not saying anything when the idiot that Bridget may or may not cheat on her husband with showed up. She just wanted to shout that he needed to Bridget alone, or maybe tell Danny what she knew, but in both cases she didn't figure that would end well. So she glared at him, her best Ice Queen glare and that was all that was needed.
Then she headed off to the airport. There was a lot of squealing at that airport, mostly from Mary and Joanie who were excited to see her again. Matt tried to stay the ever stoic macho male, but he took one look at Rowan's pastel purple GTO and lost it.
"This is seriously the coolest car I've ever seen," he kept saying and they all smiled.
They made two stops on the way back to the McGarrett house where they would be staying. First to drop Matt off at the Palace as he had urgent brotherly matters to attend to that apparently could not wait. Then they went to pick up Nahele, who spent the rest of the drive home playing games with Joanie and making her shriek with laughter.
This just made Rowan think of how good Nahele would be as an older brother. And he deserved to have a younger sibling to play with and coddle no matter how old he was.
When they got back home, Nahele gave up his room so Matty and Mary wouldn't be cramped in their guest bedroom. He was going to sleep on the couch and let Joanie have his room, but she wasn't big enough for big girl bed. They did, however, put the crib in his room, because, again, he didn't mind.
Rowan had Nahele do his homework at the kitchen table so he could be around his family while Rowan went about making dinner for them.
"Steve on a case?" Mary asked once Rowan had dinner in the oven. She had just finished mashing up the potatoes and was stirring in butter, while Rowan had moved onto boiling broccoli.
"Yeah, you know him," she said. "No such thing as a day off for him."
"He's certainly a work-a-holic," Mary agreed, she then shot a glance to the two kids. Nahele who was pouring over what seemed to be biology homework and then her own child who was sitting beside Nahele in her high chair, doing her very hardest to color between the lines of her my little pony coloring page.
Every now and then, Joanie would cry: "Hele!" and hold up her coloring page for him to see. Every single time she did, he'd stop whatever he was doing, take a good long look at it and then tell her how good she was doing.
Yes, he'd make a wonderful big brother one day. He must have been taking lessons from Grace, aka the worlds best big sister… most of the time.
"Do you think… do you think I could talk to you about something?" Mary asked after a while and Rowan nodded.
"Sure, you can talk to me about whatever you'd like…"
"It's about Wo Fat."
Oh, Rowan knew right away that this was not going to be a good conversation. Rowan shot a glance to her and saw that Mary was wearing a very serious face.
"I saw him at the wedding, I asked the others, they told me about you and him a little bit," she said and Rowan nodded. "He's the guy who killed dad, isn't he?"
Rowan winced. "He uhm… he wasn't the one who pulled the trigger, but he did send Hess your dad's way… not that that's a great distinction," she whispered.
"Okay… and last year… when you were missing, Steve said you were off with your brother, which is Wo," she said and Rowan nodded again. "And he's also why you and Steve argued in the first place."
"Is the question in there somewhere… or…?"
"I guess I'm just curious as to how you got Steve to forgive him for what he did seeing as he's the reason why dad is dead, I'm pretty sure he tortured Steve twice and then he stole you last year…"
"I didn't," Rowan said quickly. "The deal is Wo Fat is in my life, not Steve's. They don't really talk unless I'm in trouble or Steve wants advice or something."
"I see… but you forgave him for what he did to you, and to our dad…"
"Uh… well… I wouldn't say I forgave… I unno… I guess I get his motives. He thought your mom killed his father and then inserted herself into his life to raise him and then abandon him. He figured… a father for a father? It's a shit decision, but he's a sociopath and he doesn't really know better, you know? As for the stuff he did to me, I'm assuming you mean last year's lies?"
Mary nodded. "Well he did that because he thought that was what was best for me after what happened. That came from a place of caring he just went about it in a really, really bad way."
Mary seemed to think it over and then Rowan turned to look at her. "He does have some redeeming moments," she said and Mary shot a bit of a narrowed glare at her.
"Yeah… uh… when I found out about Matty in Colombia, Wo Fat was the one who sent down people to get him out of there. He was also the one who got me out of Colombia, so… he's not all bad. Sometimes… sometimes you have to look past what people did before… when they were hurting…"
"I suppose…"
Rowan and Mary were quiet a little longer before Rowan asked: "Can I ask why you were asking? Are you upset about him being in my life?"
"No I guess not. I mean, I'll never trust him, but as you said, he's in your life not ours," Mary said. "No, I was asking because of Matty… I guess… because of his past I worry that he'll slid back into that again…"
"Oh, whoa, wait a second. Matty is nothing like Wo Fat. I don't think you have to worry about that. They're a completely different class of criminal."
"It all stems from greed though…"
Okay maybe that was true. "Yeah, but I'm pretty sure Matty learned his lesson. Most people do when someone has to send in an assassin to rescue them…"
And then Mary was looking at her again. "Wait you only sent one person?"
"Oh yeah, but he's really good. He got Matty out no problem," she said. "Didn't he tell you that?"
"Well I mean… he did, but I guess for the amount of damage that he said he saw when he got pulled out of that room… he figured there had to have been a whole team of people."
"Nope. Just one, really good, really angry guy getting paid a lot of money to cause a lot of damage," she said.
"Sometimes you scare me."
Rowan just shot her a smile and then asked: "Why are you so worried about Matty? Is he showing signs of… you know… embezzling again?"
"No…"
"Then why are you worried?"
"Because… I… I found a ring…"
Rowan turned to her a big smile on her face but Mary wasn't smiling. "Wait… are you not excited?"
"No, I am… but I also know that he wants to give me and Joanie the world and what… what if he does that the wrong way again?"
"And I guess you thought… since I deal with Wo all the time, that I would know how to deal with any slide backs with Matt?"
"Yes."
"Right well… Wo slides back on things, all the time, I just have to not blame myself for them," she said. "He's always going to make his own decisions, you know? And unfortunately, a sociopath does not make good decisions, you know? He makes selfish ones."
Mary nodded like she did know.
"Do you love him? Matty I mean? Do you love him?"
"Yes, I do. You should see him with Joanie, he calls him Daddy and he calls her princess and he's just… he's been great…"
"Then that's all that matters… right? Everything else you and him can talk about. Make sure he knows if he slides back to his old ways, gets himself in trouble al in the name of you and Joanie then he's going to lose you. That tends to work on most people."
"Does it work on your brother?"
"Surprisingly yes. It works better on him than it does on Steve," Rowan admitted and Mary laughed.
"Yeah, well Steve's always been a special kind of stubborn," Mary admitted. "But we know you won't let him get away with it, will you?"
Rowan smiled. "Well, sometimes I do… you know… in bed…"
"Ew! No, I don't want to think about that," Mary said, nudging Rowan's shoulder with her own and the two girls broke out laughing.
They ended up eating dinner without the boys and then letting the kids play out on the beach, and after that, all conversation between them was light and happy.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Danny was supposed to be off, supposed to be with his sister, but he burst into Steve's office and then just paced. Steve had seen this before, so he just sat there and waited for Danny to gather his words to hurl them at Steve.
"I think you might be right," Danny said after a pause. Right, well that was surprising, a nice surprise, a slightly suspicious surprise but he'd take it.
"Oh, that's very good news. Care to elaborate?"
"Okay," he said taking a breath and gearing up for a big lecture and Steve was already regretting asking. "The guy, uh, the goofy kid on the paddleboard with my sister, I think something might be going on."
"Oh, I know I was right about that, Rowan's been dreaming about it."
Danny went quiet, blinked his eyes, shook his head and then said: "What?" Steve opened his mouth to repeat the sentence but Danny shook his head again and shut him up. "I'm sorry. Your wife has been dreaming about my sister? And that goofy kid. And you're only telling me now?"
"Well she didn't know it was your sister, Danny. What did you want her to do, have her announce it on the beach in front of your sister, the goofy kid and her coworkers?" Steve asked, his hands moving around as he talked without him realizing. "Besides, Rowan says they haven't actually done it yet, but it's coming down the pike."
"She's right, you're moving your hands when you talk. Your taking on my traits," Danny snapped
"You're just saying that to be malicious," Steve growled purposely lowering his hands.
Danny said nothing but seemingly thought about all he had found out. "So, it hasn't happened yet."
"It might not happen at all, Rowan could be wrong you know," Steve told him even though they both knew she was never wrong. "How do you even know huh? Other then Rowan, what's your proof?"
"Okay, so, I was sitting there, and I was having drink with her and this guy comes in and they had this very strange vibe. And then he called her Bridge which made me wanna throw up."
"Mm-hm."
"And they go to leave together and he, as they walked away, put his hand right on her back."
Steve let out a low breath. "Then what?"
"That's it."
"That's it?"
"I mean other then your wife glaring daggers at him that was it. Though now that I know what she's been dreaming I get why she was ice queening him in the middle of brunch. Poor kid stuttered through introducing himself to her."
Steve blinked his eyes. "So, what you're saying, other than my wife's dreams you got nothing?"
"Does Rowan know how often you call her your wife? Cause like, we're almost in double digits here and I've been here like five minutes."
"Okay you know what, stop it. Just stop it. I say it a normal amount," Steve snapped. "And we're getting off topic here, show me what you're talking about." He got up and went to Danny. "Just for me here. Okay, he put his hand on her back and you through that's how…"
He put his hand on Danny's back to mimic what he thought had happened and Danny shook his head.
"No, that's how you put your hand on my back," he clarified. And that was true, that was how Danny did it to him. And as if to prove it, Danny did it too him too. "This is this," he said and then lowered his hand down to Steve's lower back. "And this is how he touched her."
Oh yeah, sexually charged 100% if Danny wasn't the one doing it. Rowan doing it got him hard, but the girl could also yawn and get him hard so you know… she was special that way.
"I want you to think about someone doing this to Rowan… someone that isn't you…"
Yeah, he'd break that hand. But he didn't like anyone touching his Rowan that wasn't him or someone he trusted with her.
"I can come back," someone said and when they turned Matty was there leaning on his cane and grinning stupidly at his brother.
Both Steve and Danny turned fully, hands on hips, trying to act like Matt hadn't just caught them in that awkward situation.
Danny moved immediately to hug Matt. "I texted you said I had a work thing," Danny said. "Didn't Rowan pick you up?"
"Yeah, she did, she also dropped me off," he said and Steve felt a soft tug of annoyance that his wife hadn't come to the building but hadn't come in to talk to him. "I'm uh… I'm actually hear to talk to Steve."
Oh now that was surprise. "Oh yeah?" he asked moving in to hug Matt stiffly. "What's up."
"Right, so I know Mary wasn't all that forth coming about our relationship, but she said you have a tendency to be nosy and she didn't want you bugging her…" he said. This was not a good start to this conversation.
"He's going to hit you, Matty," Danny snapped.
But Matty just shot Danny a dry glare. "It wasn't my idea, I swear," he said choosing to focus on Steve who was now staring at him, arms still crossed over his chest as he glared at Matty. "What I want you to know, is that I sincerely care for your sister and for Joan. This is not a passing fling or some game I'm playing. This is very real for me and… I know it's only been ten months but I… after what I've been through I'm done putting things off."
Yeah Steve didn't like where this was going.
"I'm here to ask your permission to marry Mary," he said and then pulled a ring out of his pocket and showed it to him.
Steve just stood there, blinded. Completely utterly blinded. He had literally just found out that this was a thing, and now he was supposed to say it was okay for him to marry her.
"Uh… do I have to give you an answer now?" Steve asked.
"Well I mean… I'd like one…"
At that moment Chin chose to come into the room. "We're uh… we're set with the shrink to see which parent is guilty," he said glancing to both Danny and then to Matt. "You guys all good?"
"Yeah we're good," Steve said quickly. Thanking every god he could think of for this break in his case. "Sorry, case, uh… did you want to wait here or did you want to go back to my place. Danny could drive you."
Steven had never run from anything before. But he practically ran from that room. He didn't even wait for Matt to give him an answer he just left.
He didn't want to give Matty an answer, because he wanted to say no. He didn't know how to give any other answer other than that and even he knew that that wasn't fair.
