Chapter 352
A lot of planning had gone into this party. He wasn't sure who worked the hardest, but he knew a lot of the planning had been delegated to Rowan when they got busy with cases.
He wasn't sure who was in charge of the video but he was assuming it was Kono. This video had baby photos, bad computer graphics and funny videos from people in his life who couldn't make the party. Like one of his Uncles, Sang Min and Dog the Bounty Hunter, all wishing him a happy birthday.
Rowan had forced Chin to stand in—what she called—a spot of honour. Where everyone could see him clearly and he got the best view of the video. He figured it was also because it had a clear line to where she was stashing the cake, ready to be wheeled out to him when it was time to sing the birthday song and have him cut the cake.
Rowan, herself, was sitting at a table flanked by Steven and Nahele. She was awfully subdued but Rowan was exhausted. Probably by all the work she had been doing about the party.
She was cuddled nicely into Steve's side who was in a black dress shirt, which meant the two of them probably went at it before coming to this party and she cut up his back again. They kept telling him to tell her to cut her nails but Steve always wore those nail marks with pride.
Chin's party had a great turn out. He really had everyone there with him, everyone that mattered. Except, of course, the one who mattered most. His niece Sara, who was in Colombia, of course could not be there with him, but he was waiting diligently for her aunt and uncle to allow her call him to wish him a happy birthday.
He was part way through the video and Kono had run off to get the cake when the phone rang. Sara's contact popped up and he smiled. He glanced back to where Rowan was sitting, just to signal that he'd be a minute and almost stopped.
She was staring at him. Carefully assessing him with the coldest pair of Ice Queen eyes he had ever seen. Well damn, what had he done to upset her?
Well if it was the phone call, he'd just explain that it was Sara and it was important for him to take it.
But it was not the happy phone call that he was expecting. It was a frantic phone call from her Aunt talking about tragedy and danger.
As he left all he could think about was Sara, he forgotten all about Rowan and her ice blue eyes watching him.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Chin had run out of his own birthday party.
Worried didn't even begin to cover what Steve was feeling. Something was wrong, and he knew it.
First Rowan was acting weird. Like weird for Rowan. She was quiet and subdued and she had the Ice Queen mask on.
Except there was no reason for her to have that mask on her face.
They had a good day, they even managed to squeeze in a quickie while they were getting ready, which meant Steve ended up in black instead of white. But Rowan loved him in black, made him look more debonair, she said. He wasn't sure how black made him look mor debonair than white but he wasn't about to argue with her, he was just glad she found him attractive no matter what.
The party was going the way Rowan thought it would, but there it was, glowing in her eyes. The Ice Queen blue.
She just kept staring at Chin and he couldn't figure out why the hell she could be mad at the birthday boy.
But then he ran out of his own party after getting a phone call and worry skated up Steve's spine.
He gave chase, shoving his wife, who was acting even weirder now, but at least it was a Rowan kind of weird, and his son into the car. He had wanted to leave Nahele at the party but the kid wouldn't let him. Now that he knew his mom had powers, he expected to go everywhere with them and if there was any real danger his mom would throw him somewhere. He kept asking for California with his Uncle Con.
Steve had a feeling that Uncle Con was slightly Nahele's favourite and he kind of wanted to lord that over Wo Fat. And he might of if he still wasn't certain if the man would shoot him if he did. He was about 90% certain he wouldn't but that left 10 % of uncertainty.
Steve was behind the wheel of Rowan's GTO, she sat beside him in the passenger seat. She had her hands up, her fingers plucking at some invisible harp.
"I, for the life of me, can't figure out why these strings are so jumbled," she whispered as Steve laid on the horn trying to get Chin, who was on his motorcycle, to pull over or at the very least slow down.
It took hollering his name out of that window, honking, whistling and then Rowan grabbing the wheel and practically hitting Chin with her car before Chin finally pulled over.
As soon as they had stopped Steve was out of the car and heading for him.
"What the hell is going on?"
"It's Sara," Chin said almost breathlessly.
"What, what happened to her?"
"I've gotta get to Colombia."
"Colombia? What are you talking about?"
"She was kidnapped, Steve!"
Oh shit. Steve glanced back to the car where his wife was still sorting through strings. Bet money she knew this was coming down the pike. Why didn't she tell him?
"By who?"
"I don't know, I… I don't know. I got a call from Maria, they grabbed her when she was coming home from school."
And then they both turned to Rowan. They watched, watched as her slim fingers picked at air, at strings only she could see.
"She's been the Ice Queen all night. What does she know?"
Steve turned back to him. "I have no idea. Honestly. She hasn't said anything. You know, sometimes it comes to her in feelings not in real pictures."
"Rowan!" Chin called and her eyes focused in on him and then her hands dropped.
"I got nothing," she called back. "Except a name. Agent Navarro?"
Right. Useless. Chin turned a helpless look back to Steve who just winced. "I gotta go find her."
"We are behind you one thousand percent, we will do everything in our power to get this girl back. Okay?"
Chin nodded.
"It's going to take about an hour to arrange a flight."
"Rowan could…"
"And how do we explain that to Sara's family?"
"Right fine, we'll fly."
"Look Rowan's given us a name, so we're going to go to the Palace, and we're going to look that name up. And then we're going to call the DEA. They got people on the ground there who know what's going on, okay and, you know, if we have to we call Fat, he owes me a favour."
Chin nodded
"We're going to be smart about this. Let's do it right for Sara, you understand?"
He nodded again, clearly grateful for Steve's presence and backing.
"Right we're going to meet you at the office."
Chin got back on his motorcycle and Steve got back in the car. All the way back to the McGarrett homestead he quizzed Rowan on what she knew, which was not a lot. She couldn't even tell him who the kidnappers were. The strings were being uncooperative.
Still he thanked her for trying, kissed her on the cheek and told her to pack up. If they were going to Colombia they were going to need her and her underworld contacts. He caught a flash of fear on her face, but he figured that was just because he was asking her to use her app and connections outright and usually that never ended well, because before he had been hypocritical. Being angry at her for using her connections when she had no choice and needed him too.
Well not only was he going to help Chin save Sara, he was also going to prove to Rowan that he really had changed.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Agent Navarro turned out to be the DEA agent that Steve was supposed to contact, so you know, that was good. Rowan did good on that little bit of vision. He had, however, not been all that helpful. They got the information they needed, but none of it was good news, none of it
"Uhm… so…" Rowan said wringing her hands and they all turned to her. "So what did you figure out?"
"Uh… that K and R is a big thing down there."
"Already knew that. One of my kidnappings was in Colombia."
Why did she say it like that? Chin glanced to Steve and saw that vein in his jaw pulsing. He hated thinking about Rowan in danger and this was not helping, so he jumped right into get back on track.
"They grabbed her on the way home from school. Four bad guys in an SUV, there was an exchange of fire, the bodyguard got clipped, one of the bad guys died, but they took the body."
"Body's on fire, there's a tattoo you can salvage though."
They all exchanged glances and then looked back to her. "We need to know what you know."
"Everything you guys know."
Why did Chin feel like she was lying? He glanced to Steve to see what he felt and found him staring at her with a narrowed looked about him. Right so maybe he had the same feeling that Chi did.
"Alright, well then are you ready to go? Nahele all sorted? Did you send him to Cali is he staying with the Grover's? Also where is your stuff?" Steve asked and Rowan winced.
"Well… uh…"
"What's the matter?" Kono asked, clearly sensing that something was wrong with her.
"I uh… I don't think I can go…"
"What do you mean? I need you Rowan," Chin said.
"No, I know, but uh… uhm… the thing is the last time we were in Colombia I uh…"
"Is this about the Colombia incident?" Danny asked.
"Jesus how bad was this Colombia incident?" Grover asked.
"It was really bad… there's uhm… there's still a bit of a witch hunt out for me."
"Still? Rowan it was almost a year ago!"
"I know, alright, but Wo says I shouldn't go and…"
"Wait a second," Steve said. "I'm sorry, did you just Wo said you shouldn't go and you're listening to him?!"
Rowan blinked her eyes and then frowned. "Steve this is no time for sibling rivalries!"
"HE IS NOT MY BROTHER!"
There used to be a time that he would scream that at her, except it was: "He's not your brother." It was amazing to see how it had changed and yet stayed the same at the same time.
"Look, both Wo Fat and Con said they'd be on on call for you. They're both busy right now so they wouldn't let me pull them or throw them down, but they both agreed that I can send them down if you really need it. They uh… they just think it would be safer for me if I stay out of it. Is that okay?"
They all stared at her, because it wasn't okay. Not at all. They were finally on board with using her knowledge and her power and connections and now she didn't want to come? Usually they could get her to stop meddling!
"I mean, why wouldn't it be? Usually you guys fight me on coming."
Well she had then there.
Steve glanced to the team and then back to Rowan. "It's alright, if Wo thinks it would be safer for you to stay behind then of course. But he better be ready to get pulled the second we need him."
"Okay. And uh… you guys will keep me posted on everything right?"
"Of course we will," he said, pressing a kiss to her cheek.
After that, once the plane was ready to go and they were all packed up and ready, they were heading down to Colombia. Chin would have felt better if Rowan was with them, but he still had his Five-0 family and that was good enough.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Rowan bolted up in bed as the dream faded away. That jumble of tangled strings had finally revealed something to her, a clear flash of truth amidst all the confusing futures and possibilities.
And with it came this sudden welling fear that she was in the wrong place. Getting up she quickly changed out of her PJs, and once he was decent she pulled on the string of the one person she could easily convince to come with her.
With one tug Con tumbled into the room and crashed into the bed. He pulled his heat out of her sheets and glared at her.
He was dressed to go, the leather jacket, the rabbit mask and everything. He glared at her from behind the white plastic.
"Fucking hell Woman!" he cried. "I was in the middle of haunting Grey. What is wrong with you?"
"It's Armando."
Con swiped the mask to the side so she could see his face. Confusion and concern on his face, finally reverting back from Sin Nombre to her loveable Conejo.
"Armando? What are you talking about?"
"I dreamed about the kidnapping. All of this is tied to Armando."
"Armando Diaz? He kidnapped Sara? Why?"
"I don't know. Maybe. I need to figure it out."
"Oh… oh no… no… Rowan… Rowan… I can't take you back to Colombia. Wo will literally kill me."
"Con, something's wrong. I can feel it, but I don't know what it is. All I know is that this could potentially be tied to Armando, and if it is it'll be easier to get the girl back if I'm the one handling it. But something is off, and I'm going to need help. Now are you coming with me or am I going by myself?"
Con sighed. "For fucksake. Wo's going to kill me," he sighed to himself. "Fine uh… where's all that gear I left here."
"In the garage."
"Right so I'm going to…" he started and the door banged open. Con jumped hand dating under his jacket as he turned but it was just her kid who had thrown the door open. He relaxed right away.
"I'm coming too!" Nahele cried.
Rowan turned to him. "Uh excuse you, no you're not. I'm going to catch hell from your dad for going in the first place, if I bring you with me he'll throttle me. You want me to get throttled?"
"No. I want to come."
"No, not happening. But it's a good thing you're up. Where do you wanna go? The Grover's or your Uncle Wo's?"
"Neither. I want to go with you."
"It's not happening."
"Fine then I'm calling Dad right now. He's an off switch right? It'll make using your powers harder…"
He lifted his phone up to no doubt to follow through with his threat to call Steve. Rowan merely had to send a pulse through the room and all the electronics died.
"And now you don't gotta phone," Rowan snapped. "Don't you ever blackmail me again."
Nahele looked down to his black screen and then scowled at Rowan. "You know you'll have to buy me a new one now, right?"
"Yeah. But I can afford it. Or, since you decided to try and blackmail, I can leave you phoneless until the end of Christmas break."
"You wouldn't dare."
"Oh, wouldn't I?" Rowan asked and Nahele frowned. He seemed to realize that he was losing this battle so he turned on the puppy dog pout that always worked on Steve and had a 50/50 chance of working on Rowan.
"Oh, please, mom. I'll be good, I promise!" he cried and Rowan sighed.
"Nahele…"
"Please. I hate being left behind. You know that! Please. I'll be good mom, I promise. I promise. Please. Please don't leave me behind again."
Con was of no help of course he just turned wide eyes and waited for Rowan's verdict.
"God, Steve's going to kill me."
