A/N: Happy Friday my wonderful readers! Well, it's not as late as it could have been! We've got some more cute moments in this chapter, including a very freaked out Steve and more of Steve and Wo being reluctant bros. This reluctant bro thing is going to go on for a while, let me tell you. And I'm having so much fun writing it if you guys can't tell. Next chapter is where things are going to get HEAVY and it'll only go downhill form there, so needless to say I'm excited! As always don't forget to leave a review, or drop a fav or follow and I'll see you guys on Monday.
Chapter 353
Steve got to Colombia, met Agent Navarro in person and was immediately told Rowan was right. The kidnappers had burnt body of their fallen comrade so that law enforcement couldn't ID him. Then he was told that running around Bogota trying to question people could get them killed.
Or worse. It would get Sara killed.
Everyone kept telling them to calm down, that going to the cops would make things worse. That them being there was going to make things worse. But Chin didn't want to back down and neither did Steve.
If this was his kid he wouldn't be backing down or staying still. Also, he would have called Wo Fat by now. He had told Chin he would call Wo for him, Rowan had said the same thing, but, and call him stubborn, he just really didn't want to rely on Wo Fat for things like this, because sooner or later it was going to backfire on them.
And besides, Wo Fat really only cared about his immediate family. Steve doubted that Wo even knew who Sara was.
Agent Navarro, however, did give him something he could use. There was a man who was essentially the King of Kidnap and Ransom down here, and he would probably know who took Sara, if it wasn't him. No one worked K and R in Colombia without him knowing about it.
Agent Navarro had said that Raphael Ramirez would be hard to question. It wasn't like Steve could just march up to that man's heavily fortified house and talk to him. And he once again got that warning that asking too many questions could get Sara killed.
Yeah except Agent Navarro clearly had no idea who Steven was, and who he had married. Even without Rowan there, even without her backing him, he'd go to that house, it would just help to be able to throw her name at Ramirez.
So Danny and Grover were sent to the Morgue to get more information about their burnt body and the tattoo that Rowan s aid they'd use to identify him. Chin and Kono stayed at the Morales house setting up to trace the ransom call when it came in. And Steve went to Raphael Ramirez's place by himself. Which was stupid and he knew it but he figured himself relatively safe.
He had shown up in the man's backyard, arms up shouting: "Excuse me" in Spanish to get his attention. Hands up so they knew he was unarmed.
Ramirez had been in the pool with his son when Steve showed up and as his men had pat Steve down, their large guns all out and trained on him, he had left his son to swim and approached Steve. He had wrapped himself up in a bath robe and then had McGarrett sat down at the small table he had by the pool.
He signalled for a drink to be brought to him, but offered nothing to Steve at all, not even from the fruit bowl that was sitting on the table.
"You realize had my son not been here, you'd already be dead."
"Well, in that case I'm very glad your son is here, sir," he said as If he hadn't planned it that way.
"I hope you have an equally good plan for your exit, my friend, because soon hector will go inside to finish his homework"
"Actually, I do. But that's not important right now," Steve said pulling his badge out and putting it on the table. "My name is Commander Steve McGarrett. I'm with the Five-0 Task Force out of Hawaii.
This just made Ramirez laugh. "Ay-yi-yi-yi," he said grinning foolishly. Steve grinned right back because he knew that smile was going to fade when he realized who Steve really was. "That's a… pretty badge. My son has something similar. It's a little tin star, says sheriff on it. If you think this guarantees your safety or entitles you to act without fear of consequences, without respect, you're very mistaken."
"No, my connections give me that entitlement and ensure my safety."
"And what connections are those."
"Uh… Pierce for one," Steve said and a for a second that smile faded off of Ramirez's face.
"Which Pierce?"
Ah, he didn't know Steve, but he knew Rowan. Well, he was going to save that one for later so he moved right onto the real reason he was there. "Thirty-six hours ago a young girl by the name of Sara Diaz was kidnapped on her way home from Saint Martha's School. Silver SUV, four guys, one guy was killed at the scene. So far there's been no ransom call, no demands made."
"Are you implying I had something to do with this?"
"I'm not implying anything. I'm asking you if you have Sara."
"If I had taken her, I would've been paid by now or she'd be dead already."
Steve nodded. "Fine, you know where she is?"
"Let me… let give you some advice, Commander Steve McGarrett. Your big John Wayne act may work on your little island, but here in Bogota, here its gonna get yourself and that little girl killed."
"I'm sorry, I'm a little confused. I was led to believe that nothing happens here without you knowing about it."
"There are many opportunists out there these days. It's hard to see everything that's going on, even from the top of the mountain," said slapping Steve's badge back into his hand. "Now I think it's time my son went in to his homework and my boys will… see that you're dealt with…"
Steve smiled carefully. "Or I call my contacts and you can apologize before telling me something I can use in my investigation."
"Again, with the contacts. You still haven't told me which Pierce is protecting you."
"The scary one," Steve said as he went for the phone. He knew better than to call Rowan though. Rowan had power in Colombia for one reason and that was Wo Fat's connection to Armando Diaz, so that was who he called.
The phone rang once and then Wo picked up, but he was not happy to hear from him. Though, to be fair, the man was never happy to hear from him.
"What is it McGarrett? I have a bit of a situation here."
Oh shit, no wonder he wouldn't let Rowan pull him right away. He hoped the situation wasn't too dangerous for him, because if they needed him, he was going to drop what he was doing.
"She's fine."
"No, she's not. She's my fucking situation!" Wo Fat cried and Steve's smile faded. "You have no idea she's in Bogota?"
Steve frowned. He was in Bogota. He glanced up to Ramirez, smiled nervously and then put a single finger up to pause their conversation. "Sorry give me a second."
He then gave the phone his full attention. He cleared his throat before asking: "Uh… my wife is where?"
"Colombia, I just got the alert."
"No… no that can't be right, I left my wife in Hawaii. She said that you said it wasn't safe and she was going to stay in Hawaii."
"Well I just got an alert, saying her, Con and my nephew are in Colombia…" "—Whoa! Wait a second. Your nephew? She's got Nahele with her?" "… and I have a text from Con confirming this information so I don't know what you're thinking…"
"Okay, okay," Steve said cutting him off. "Look. I'm gonna… I've got Ramirez here and he's threatening to kill me…"
"Raphael Ramirez? Bogota's K and R King?"
"That would be the one. I'm at his place right now, he's made several threats along the lines of me being dead when this meeting is done."
"You mention me or Ro yet?"
"Not yet, wanted to be sure you knew him first."
That earned him a dry laugh. "You're in luck, McGarrett. I do."
"Okay well can you call him and deal with it, please? I'm going to call my wife."
Steven then hug up and dialed his wife's number ignoring the look of absolute shock on Ramirez's face. He still didn't know who Steve was connected to, so he was incredulously watching Steve ignore him, no doubt confused as to what was happening or where Steve got off showing him this level of disrespect.
Steve was more concerned with getting a hold of Rowan. But her phone rang twice and then went straight to voicemail.
He called Nahele next. That one went straight to voicemail but that would make sense because he did not have a protective case like Rowan did. So if he took it through the void, because that's how Rowan would have gotten down there so fast, it would be fried.
"Commander McGarrett…" Ramirez started but Steve just shook his head.
"He'll be calling soon," he said absently.
"What are you talking about?" he snapped and then in the house the phone rang.
Steve dialled Rowan again growling to himself as Ramirez stared at the house. "For fucksake pick up the phone."
She didn't of course, but a different man with a different gun came rushing out of the house, phone in hand with a nervous look about his face. He spoke in hurried Spanish to Ramirez, and a touch of worry graced his face as well.
But he took that phone.
"Ramirez… oh hello Fat… I… uh… I do have a Commander McGarrett here… I uh… I did not know that…" Steve shot him a patronizing smile as he went back to his phone trying to think if he had Sin Nombre's phone number which he didn't. "Wow… Really? So when he said he had connections to a Pierce, he meant your Pierce because you let your sister marry a cop? What an interesting power move… Oh no, I suppose your sister isn't one you'd want to argue with…"
Wonderful, he was going to let Wo Fat deal with that. Steve focused on his phone and pulled up his version of the app. "Sandy can you connect me to the Professional please?'
That function is unavailable.
"Since when?"
Since the Professional turned it off.
Oh my god. He was going to kill her.
"Can you confirm that she's in Colombia?"
Yes I can.
"And who is she with?"
She is with Codename NA and Codename Champ
She really had brought Nahele. He was going to murder his wife.
"Where is she?"
At the Morales house.
Dead. She was dead. Absolutely fucking dead.
"… And you said your sister… she's in… obviously that is not a threat it is a simple… and you sent him down with her, wonderful. Yes, I think it is a good time for a vacation, thank you for the advice my friend."
Steve got up pocketing his phone. He ripped the phone out of Ramirez's hand. "Can you get him to send me information please? I have to go yell at my wife."
"Yeah sure, tell her to pull me the second she senses trouble. I also have Armando getting ready to move in on her location. I'd say stop her, but her name is probably the only thing that'll help you down there. They have a healthy dose of fear for her, but they also kind wanna burn her at the stake. Literally so maybe use her name sparingly."
Steve took that in. He assumed that Rowan's power in Colombia was tied up in Wo Fat and Armando Diaz, it hadn't occurred to him that the power was all her own.
"What the fuck happened here Wo?"
"A massacre."
Steve went still. A what? His wife did what? Yeah, he didn't have time to unpack that right now.
He handed Ramirez the phone. "I'll expect your call later."
"You should have opened with Rowan, Commander. This would have gone a lot easier for you if you had," he said and Steve just smiled at him and made a mental note to do that from now on. Especially since the dumbass had come down here, despite a witch hunt for her.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Chin and Kono had everything set up to go, they had Jorge and Maria prepped for the call. Jorge would take the call, do all he could to keep them on the line and Maria would shut up and stay quiet.
And then Rowan kicked in their front door with a: "Y'all fucking owe me," startling everyone in the room.
Chin and Kono were happy of course, happy to have Rowan there. Happy to see that Rowan had brought Sin Nombre with her, and for some reason Nahele too. But they were also very confused as to why Rowan was there when she said she couldn't come.
"Not that we're not happy to see you but you said there was a…"
"Yeah, then I got some new information and I thought it best to come down and…"
"Wo's pissed," Sin Nombre said as Nahele moved to hug first Chin and then Kono. Sin Nombre was looking at his phone and not paying attention to anyone else in the room. "Also Armando had no idea what we're talking about, and he's insulted we think he's stupid enough to go after someone he knows is connected to you."
Rowan shot him a little glare. "Did you have to text him the second we got here?"
"Man knew we were here, asked for confirmation. I'm already going against his wishes, don't wanna make it worse."
"You're scared of Wo Fat?" Kono asked him and then Sin Nombre settled a glare on her even though she was smiling at him in a teasing fashion.
"Just cause I can take him out doesn't mean I want to. Nor do I want to listen to the lecture about how I should know better and I shouldn't just do whatever she says. As if that man didn't jump every time she snapped her fingers for a whole year. Think's he knows best cause he's the oldest."
Kono glanced to Chin, and he understood immediately what that meant. It was really weird thinking of Wo Fat as anything other than that formidable enemy that had caused them a lot of grief. But with Rowan and Sin Nombre around they got to see him as something else. A grumpy older brother frustrated with his two younger and very irresponsible siblings.
"Does Steve know you're here?" Chin asked her and Rowan shook her head.
"Nope, and we're not telling him yet."
Great more secrets.
Jorge and Maria were now staring at the three new comers, including Nahele who was moving to the couch to sit down and then to Chin clearly looking for an explanation as to what these people were doing there.
"Uh, sorry, Jorge and Maria, this is Rowan, she's Steve's wife, and Nahele is their kid," Chin said and then he glanced to Sin Nombre who was staring at all the pictures and walls like they were the most interesting things in the world. "And that's her brother, Con…"
"Oh, whoa. No, no," Sin Nombre said turning to him. "I'm Sin Nombre, you don't get to call me Con."
And that was when Jorge pulled Chin aside. First being sure to smile warmly, albeit quite shakily, at Sin Nombre, then politely excusing himself and taking Chin with him.
"Do you know who that is?"
"Sin Nombre? Yes."
"Then you know what he does."
"Yes."
"And she's his sister?"
"Yep," Chin said. "Let me help you out here. That lovely lady over there is Rowan Pierce."
Jorge turned wide eyes onto Rowan, seeing her in a completely different light. She was staring at their set up, the one they'd use to trace the call. She was glancing from her phone to the screen which meant she was pairing Sandy to it.
Thank god they were saved.
"And what is she doing?"
"She's helping," he said. "Trust me, her being here is a good thing."
But both of them looked skeptical, and then the phone rang and both of them looked panicked. Maria started sobbing asking: "Is it them?"
They all rushed the phone and the equipment attached to it.
"Listen to me, stay clam, and keep them on the line for as long as possible. Ask for proof of life, we need to hear Sara's voice," he said and then turned to Rowan who seemed awfully calm about this whole situation. "Rowan?"
"She's online and ready to go, just pick up the phone and we're good."'
Jorge picked up the call with a calm: "Hola," and then they waited to see what would happen next.
"Mr. Morales," a distorted voice said. "We want one million dollars in non-sequential, unmarked bills. You have three hours."
Rowan swept Chin aside, took the laptop and began to type commands quickly into a sidebar he just noticed.
"We will contact you again…" and then the distorted voice went away revealing the real voice instead. "With instructions for the… hey… what happened… it just shut off…"
A bunch of pop ups appeared on the screen and Rowan cleared her throat.
"Alright your name is Lucas Pablo and you work for…" Rowan trailed off as the names flashed across the screen. She seemed to be really surprised by what she was reading. She turned her eyes to Sin Nombre who too was awfully calm about this and just sitting on the couch beside Nahele. "You work for the Diego cartel."
At the Sin Nombre straightened. "I'm sorry, did you just say Diego?"
"You work for Carlos Diego," Rowan repeated and the man made an attempt to hang up which had Rowan rolling her eyes. "Sandy's not going to let you disconnect this call until I say so. Put Diego on the phone."
"I… he's not…"
"If you don't want me to track down every single one of your family members and slaughter them, you're going to put Carlos Diego on the phone."
At that both Jorge and Maria turned to Chin, their eyes silently asking them who he had brought into this house.
"There's no way Diego would do this to you. Not after what happened. No one fucks with you twice."
That was a lie everyone messed with her more than once. Everyone seemed to think messing with her was a good idea.
"This is Diego…"
Both Rowan and Sin Nombre turned to the phone. Chin could tell both of them recognized that voice because Sin Nombre swore and a mask of absolute rage descended onto her face.
"HELLO CARLOS!" she said animatedly into the phone. "How are you? Long time no hear from."
"Uh… Hello? I… I don't think you understand the severity of this…"
"You know, I'm really regretting not killing you the last time I was here, no one EVER wants me in Colombia, least of all me but here I am, because you made me come here and you know… I'm just not…"
"Who is this?"
She paused again. "Hmm? Oh, don't you recognize my voice Carlos? Awwwwww what a pity, here I was thinking I was haunting your dreams," she broke off to laugh and then shouted: "It's la Bruja you FUCKING DICK!"
It wasn't the first time Rowan had mentioned that name, it wasn't the first time Chin had heard that name. And judging by the sounds he heard coming from the phone the man on the other end didn't want to hear it either.
From the man there was absolute silence, but Rowan must have been on speaker because in the background there was a clamour of yelps from whoever else was with him
"There's no… that's not possible."
"Oh but it is. It really is. And you know I didn't want to come back here, but SOMEONE has kidnapped my goddaughter. Give you one guess on who was stupid enough to do that."
"Sara is your…"
"YES SARA IS MY GODDAMN FUCKING GODDAUGHTER YOU STUPID LITTLE SHIT. FIVE-0 AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THEM IS MINE! EVERYONE KNOWS THAT!"
She lowered her voice and growled: "Now you're going to listen good you idiot. You have an hour to give me Sara and if you don't, I'm going to hop on my fucking broomstick and come and get her myself. And if you remember correctly you didn't fucking like it the last time I did something about one of your stupid decisions. I'm going to tell you right now, it's gonna get a hell of a lot worse for you if I have to come and get her. Adios Diego, or should I say… see you soon?"
She hung up the phone and then just stood there and eye twitching. Everyone was just staring at her but she was off in her own world.
"I need to call Armando," she said softly. "He's supposed to be on top of them, they were supposed to be under his thumb. This is not under his thumb. Sandy connect me to Papa Bear"
Request acknowledged. Connecting you to Papa Bear.
"Mom, can I get a drink?" Nahele asked and Rowan turned to Maria who was still crying.
She sniffed a bit and then said: "Of course, uh… come with me," before leading Nahele to the kitchen.
Chin moved to Rowan's side. "Rowan does Sandy know where they are?"
Sanctuary has confirmed a location and has confirmed that they are moving. They are currently shedding all electronic devices to free themselves of me. Searching of other viable tracing option.
"Doesn't matter if they lose Sandy, they're not going to lose me now that I know it's them," Rowan said and then turned back to the phone just as it finished ringing and someone picked up.
"Hey Mami, Wo Fat just told me you're in Colombia. I'm on my way to you."
"Oh really? Wonderful. Quick question, where's Diego?"
"Carlos Diego? Lying in some hovel with his tail between his legs, why?"
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, why?"
"Because he just kidnapped someone very important to me and called for a fucking ransom."
"He did? No that can't be right…"
"ARMANDO!" Rowan shouted. "I just got off the phone with him. He has a cartel and people… you were supposed to keep on top of him!"
"Alright, no need to shout. I'm on my way and we will discuss this when I get there. by the way call your brother he's freaking out."
"Why Con's right… oh you mean Wo, yep, I'll call him. Thanks."
She then hung up the phone. She was quiet for two seconds, but made no move to actually call Wo Fat like she said she would.
From the couch Con asked: "Are you going to call him?"
Rowan scoffed at him. "Hell no, he'll scream at me."
Chin and Kono struggled not to laugh as the image of an authoritative annoyed Wo Fat crossed their minds again, before turning back to the more pressing situation.
"What do we do now, Rowan. If you know this guy…"
"I mean I do, but not in a good way. Clearly he and I have bad blood and… I mean… he's got a cartel again. He's got power. He was never supposed to get back in power…"
That didn't sound good. In fact Rowan sounded nervous. They needed a plan, they needed to know what to do about this guy.
And then the door banged open again and a very angry Steve appeared.
"ROWAN HAZEL PIERCE!"
"Ohhhh mami he full named you!" Con cried.
Rowan winced from where she was standing as he barrelled towards her, his face so red it looked like he might explode.
Rowan waved to him, open her arms to hug him, but Steve swatted her hands away, his hands going to her shoulders.
Rowan just stared at him. "Actually, I'm Rowan Hazel McGarrett now… cause you know… you married me."
That might of worked if Steven wasn't so angry. This would be where he shook her in anger except…
"Be very careful with what you do next," Sin Nombre said from the couch. "Shake her and I'll shake you back."
Steve dropped his hold on her and then shot a glare first to Sin Nombre and then pinned that glare onto her.
"Are you out of your fucking mind?! What happened to I can't come back to Colombia? Huh? What the fuck happened to it!"
"Well… uhm… to be honest I got a little bit of info and figured it'd be better to come down here… and you know I missed you…"
"Rowan!"
"Hi dad."
Steve turned an exasperated expression to Nahele who was coming out of the kitchen. "I didn't know you'd be back so soon. Want me to get you a drink?"
Steve turned back to Rowan. "You brought our kid. Why the hell would you bring our kid?"
"He wouldn't take no for an answer."
"ROWAN!"
"What! He blackmailed and he did the puppy dog pout and I mean… you cave to him all the time."
"Yes, but I don't take our kid to dangerous countries that have a witch hunt out for me!"
Rowan's phone rang again and she held up a single solitary finger to get Steve to stop and then picked up the phone.
"Hey Armando, what's up?"
"I did some digging, and it seems like Diego has managed to gain a following again. He took over a cartel from someone… you know forcibly. I hadn't heard of this change over yet…"
"Right, and do you know what the play is here? I've got a bad feeling…"
"It's money, he wants money. 1 mill…"
"I heard but… something's off…"
"You're with Jorge Morales, right? The lawyer?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Well, he doesn't have the money."
"No, I thought he was rich?"
"He was. He got ripped off."
Rowan shot a glance to Jorge. "Yo, did someone steal money from you?"
Jorge went ramrod straight. "Yes… they did."
"Someone did rip him off, how did you know that."
"Easy, it was a corrupt cop who did it. One of mine. Not sure which one, would have to do some digging to get a name," he said. "Might be a good idea to at least get the money and then ambush him at the drop."
"Great. So we need a million dollars, and they're broke and the cops have their money. This country is fucked up," Rowan growled. "Also, I unno if we have the people for a full-frontal assault."
"I do."
"Okay. Am I the only one who remembers what happened the last time we dealt with Diego? Cause like… if it weren't for me, all y'all would be dead. I'd kind of like to not have it go down that way again."
"Yes, but I'm ready this time."
"You were ready last time too…"
"Ro… I will see you soon, we will discuss options, alright?"
"Yes fine, thanks."
Rowan hung up the phone and then glanced at everyone else. She was nervous, and that nervousness was getting worse. She clearly didn't like that this Diego person was involved.
"Okay options?" Kono asked and Steve sighed.
"Armando's right, we need the money. I don't agree with the ambush option, we're not in Hawaii, it would be safer to trade."
Yes except Rowan kept saying she had a bad feeling about this, and Rowan's bad feelings never meant good things for them.
"Yes, except we don't have the money," Jorge said.
"How did the cops know about the money? Were you just travelling with it?'
"It was a pay out from a client. They stopped me on the way to the bank," Jorge explained. "The police, they have wire taps on all the law firms that have clients of interest. They do it so they can build cases against the cartels."
Alright fair.
"But they also do it to try and shake down individuals, which is why I was very careful not to use my work phone, but…"
"That means all your phones are tapped!" Chin shouted.
He was trying to not freak out but he couldn't help it. He never should have let Sarah go down to Colombia, should have never let these people take her. It was all his fault, he knew they were likely dirty and now she was kidnapped and not even Rowan could help him.
"Okay, guys. Calm down. I'm have more than a million in the bank right now. We'll just use my money, okay?"
"Uh.. Rowan… do you have any of your cards on you?" Steve asked folding his arms over his chest.
Rowan's eyes bugged out. "Oh… uh… no… but I mean I can jump…"
"How long do you think it'll take to get that kind of cash?"
"Oh uh… huh... I unno… That's a lot of dough… and if I'm not at my normal bank… unless I stay on Hawaii…"
"We have less than two hours."
"Yeah, I unno if any of the Hawaiian banks are open yet, what time is it there?"
Steve shook his head and turned to Sin Nombre. "Where's the nearest vault?"
"Six hour drive," Sin Nombre said.
"There isn't a Vault here?"
"There was, but uh… it's closed for uh… maintenance."
Yeah that meant something shady went down. That's what that meant.
"What about Armando… he might have…"
"I don't want to borrow money from someone who would ask for a favour later on," Steve snapped.
"Well beggar's can't be choosers, Steven," Rowan growled. "What do you propose we do? Steal the money back from the cops?"
Rowan shouldn't have said anything at all because that was exactly what Steven wanted to do.
