I can't wait for you guys to read it on Monday. As always don't forget to leave a review or drop a fav or a follow and I'll see you guys on Monday.
Chapter 360
Right so their murder case turned into a smuggling case.
Turned out all of this was about a car. A car that wasn't supposed to be sold to anyone other than Lawson's buyer. When the car got sniped by a different car salesman, he lost it on the guy who stole the sale out from under him and attacked him. He got killed in self defense.
But then they had to ask, why the hell did he care so much about that one car?
One look into his sale records and the established that he sold the same make and model to the same person once a month. Sometimes more than once a month. At this point the guy had a fleet of cars, all the same type, color, make and model. But why? Why would this guy want that.
Especially since he wasn't in a job that required a fleet of cars. He didn't even have a legal job.
Lee Sung had come from Seoul six years ago. On Hawaii he ran a local body shop. So far legit, right? Well, according to HPD's Narcotics Division, he was a known affiliate of the KFS syndicate. That was a Korean street gang that controlled most of the heroin trade on the island.
Though he was with the KFS, they had it on good word that any drug related trafficking, specifically to this island, meant they had to go through Wo Fat. So they were either reporting to him as boss, or paying a hefty fee to be allowed to operate there.
After finding that out, they went to Lawson's house and found a secret safe with close to a million dollars cash stashed inside. And one didn't hide car money, they hid drug money, so Lawson was in on it.
They were smuggling the heroin in through the cars.
That would explain why Lawson was so desperate to get the car back, but it also meant that whoever actually got the car was in danger. Seeing as they were driving around with a payload of drugs hidden in the car.
They had gone to pick up Lee Sung from his body shop where they found all the evidence of the heroin smuggling they needed. He almost got hit by a car during this take down and Sung wasn't even there.
They had been hoping the car was at this body shop, but it wasn't. They got lucky though, a cop pulled over the car in question, but during that routine traffic stop, someone had killed the cop, ran him over in broad daylight, and then killed the kid who had bought the car. They had also cut the cargo out of the car and left.
And that just raised more questions. Mostly being what the hell was in that car? Because killing a cop and an innocent bystander was not something you did for some heroin. Not in broad daylight. Not when they had been
Steve was starting to think that this was about something more than drugs. And he needed to find out what it was.
But with Lee Sung not talking, Steve needed his secret weapon.
Steve needed his wife.
He got home, both nervous and excited to see her. On the one hand he knew she would be excited to see him and he was excited to see her too. But he knew it wouldn't end well and that was why he was nervous.
She would no doubt think him home for the night. Probably in time for dinner. And then he would have to tell his wife that he was still on his case and that he was not taking her for dinner because he needed her help
The Professional kind of help.
He didn't want to disappoint her further. He didn't want to get into an argument. He wanted to hug his wife, maybe kiss her and then ask her for a favour.
The problem was, when he got home, his wife was not alone.
Her brother was with her.
Which was odd because this particular brother had literally just been sent home a day ago. And he was supposed to be in Japan.
The two siblings stared at Steve from the kitchen table like deer caught in the headlights. And Steve sort of felt the same way. Stopped frozen in his own doorway staring at this scene of domestic bliss that should have been with him but was with her brother instead. It wasn't right, but he was slightly jealous.
The two siblings had been caught in the middle of a coffee date, complete with Wo Fat using his favourite mug, and Rowan's home-made cookies.
She had baked after he left? Why? Was she really that mad at him? Did Wo Fat deserve warm gooey delicious cookies over him?
Rowan was the first to recover. The first to frown at the sight of him. Which was hurtful because he had been dreaming of her being excited to have him home and now he felt like, because Wo was there, she wasn't happy to see him.
"Aw you're in cargo pants, what happened to the jeans?" Rowan asked him and then her eyes narrowed. "And you're not wearing the blue shirt. Do you have an extra change of clothes in your truck or something?"
"In my office, but that's not what's important right now," Steve said turning onto Wo Fat "What… what are you doing here? I swear to god we just sent you home, why are you back?"
"He's having a situation…"
"He's having tea," Steve snapped.
"I am not it's coffee."
Steve rolled his eyes, yeah like that made a difference. "Seriously what the hell?"
"Fine, I lost a shipment. It got sent here, I'm here to get it back."
"So have Rowan throw it…"
"Okay a lot of things wrong with that. Starting with you wanting your wife and my sister to go to a known criminal, who's likely double crossed me, to demand a shipment back and then using her powers to send it to me…" Wo Fat started only to have Rowan finish with: "And besides, he doesn't want my powers messing with the tech anyway."
Great so that meant he sent something volatile. Like explosives. Wo was always worried what her electrical powers would do to explosives.
"You sent explosives here?" Steve hissed but Wo Fat just shrugged.
Rowan scowled and pointed the questions back to him. "Why are you here? I thought you had a case."
"I'm having problems. This smuggling case is getting weirder by the minute. Whatever they were smuggling in that car was worth killing a cop and the innocent bystander in broad daylight. I've got the guy in charge of the route but uh he's not talking. And…"
"You're here to ask Rowan to scare the guy into talking," Wo said dryly and Steve smiled sheepishly.
"That was the plan, but now that I have you…"
Wo Fat slammed Steven's favourite mug down a little too aggressively. He better not break it because Nahele got him that mug and he wasn't sure he could get another one.
"Let me get this straight. You want me to walk into the Palace and scare the guy?"
"Should be easy he works for you."
Wo Fat's eyebrows shot up. "He does?"
"Lee Sung. Runs your heroin, I'm guessing."
Wo Fat nodded. "Ah, him. He's just a young kid, I'm sure you can scare him yourself, McGarrett. And as Rowan mentioned I have my own situation to deal with…"
"I'd appreciate the help, anything to get this done quickly. I'm sure she's told you I'm already in hot water."
Wo Fat glanced to Rowan but the two didn't say anything. They didn't have to, Steve knew he was right. That was probably why they were having tea instead of Wo Fat already being off looking for his missing shipment. They had been bitching about him.
"And what do I get out of this?"
"I let you leave without putting you in handcuffs?"
"Your wife could just pull me from any place you try to detain me. Try again."
And she would too. Maybe not out of Steve's custody, but he second he changed hands, Rowan would get him out of it. That left him with no other option. "Fine. I'm calling in one of the favours."
Wo Fat scowled at him. "I hate your husband," he growled. He then leant in and kissed Rowan on the cheek. "Christmas tree looks great, Ro. Don't drink my coffee, I slipped liquor into it when you weren't looking."
He moved towards Steve. "Come on McGarrett, let's get this over with."
For the first time ever, Steve was actually pretty fucking excited to be going somewhere with Wo Fat.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Lee Sung was tied to the chair when Steve came in. The plan here was to talk to him, give him the chance to open up and when he didn't, he'd reveal Wo Fat. It seemed to always be Rowan's plan so he figured, since it worked for her, it would work for him.
Steve made a big show of looking this poor kid up and down before saying: "Mr. Sung in the flesh."
Wo Fat was right this was a young kid with long hair, tattoos and as ort of hipster vibe around him. The kind of kid with more bravado than brains. And with the right amount of pressure he would crumble like a house of cards
"I'd say it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, but it's not."
Oh and well spoken too. That was pretty impressive for a drug dealer.
"You and Mitch, slick operation, huh? I mean, judging by the mountain of cash we found at Mitch's house, Id' say business has been good."
Steve waited for a witty come back but the kid did nothing but scoff.
"No witty retort to that one? Okay. Then maybe you can help me understand something else. You're under the radar, you're making a bunch of money, things are good, and then this double homicide in broad daylight, killing a cop no less. Explain that to me, because that's a pretty ballsy move."
Through surprised by his words, Sung said nothing. He just stared at Steve.
"What nothing? Still nothing?" he asked. Sung just glared at him. Okay so those witty retorts were just all dried up now. "Okay, well… how about this. How about we pull in your boss, huh? See what he has to say."
"My boss?" he echoed, but Steve was already moving. He opened up that door and Wo Fat came in looking far from please, his hands deeply rooted in his pockets and poor Lee Sung practically shat himself in that seat.
"Mr. Fat… I…" he started and then his eyes narrowed. "Wait a second… are you working with him?"
Wo Fat turned cold eyes onto Steve, who was standing beside him with his arms crossed over his chest and then turned his full attention back to Lee.
"He married my sister. Every now and then I help him out."
"You're brother in law's a cop?!" Sung shouted but Wo Fat was done with getting questioned by this kid. He took one step forward and the kid tried to move back but couldn't, you know, tied up to a chair and all.
"You realize I'm going to have to plan out a completely different route? Right? Do you think that makes me happy? Killing a cop in broad daylight? Are you out of your mind? Did you think I'd back you, is that it?"
"No! I didn't I swear! Look. He just said, you can ask him. He just said that I was under the radar until this happened. I've been avoiding the cops there is no way I'd go around capping them in the streets."
"Then what happened? Didn't you say that this car guy wasn't working with us anymore? That's what you told me a couple weeks back. Was that a lie?"
Wait a second, what? Wo had information that they didn't. Why didn't he say that when he was getting briefed upstairs?
"He isn't. I wasn't lying. He really did call me and tell me that he had a better offer and he was going to call time on our arrangement. And I said he was going to have to deal with you. When he showed up dead this morning, I figured you sent men after him."
Steve turned to Wo surprised. Why did it sound like this was all tied up in him? Did this have something to do with his missing shipment too?
"I wasn't going to chance anything when we were in the middle of sourcing a new smuggling route to Oahu. Seeing as the cars fell through."
Steve got a text to his phone and looked to the two men that were arguing. It was a text saying results were back from the lab, he could leave Wo in there with this man and trust him not to shoot him, right? Especially since he had confiscated his weapons before they even walked into the palace.
"Right, I gotta check this. Do me a favour and don't kill him please."
Wo nodded, and though Steve wasn't sure he trusted him, he still went to the door.
"Wait… You're not going to… You can't leave me with him!"
But Steve ignored Lee and walked outside just as he got a call from Max. Right, Max first and then he'd talk to Kono about what the lab said.
"Hey Max, what's up."
"Thedeadbuyerbodyhadtracesofradiationandihadtoshutdownthelaband…"
Yeah none of that was recognizable. "Whoa, slow down. I can't understand you."
"I said the dead car buyer had traces of gamma radiation in his system. The only way that would be possible is if he was exposed to some sort of volatile radioactive material."
Oh fucking hell. The car had uranium in it? Really? Well that changed things drastically.
Steve headed straight back to the interrogation room to figure out what Sung and Wo Fat knew about this and interrupted a completely different interrogation.
"Where the hell is my Uranium?!" Wo Fat was shouting at Lee "I know it got sent here, on your route, in one of your cars, by one of your guys. I need to know who you sold it to, and I need to know now!"
Lee was just sitting in that chair sobbing. It didn't even look like Wo Fat had hit him, he was just leaning over him.
Lee also, very clearly, didn't have the answers to any of Wo Fat's questions. And Wo Fat was already reaching back for his gun.
"Whoa! Wo, whoa!"
Wo Fat straightened and then turned to him not a shred of surprise on his face. "Are you saying my name or the word whoa?"
"Both."
Wo just blinked his eyes at him. "What do you want, I'm busy here?"
"Your lost shipment is Uranium?"
Wo Fat sighed as if Steve had asked him a stupid question. "Yes."
"Why the fuck would you ship Uranium? Why would you sell that?"
"I'm an arms dealer. Sometimes I deal in bombs and other materials similar to bombs or could be used to make bombs. It wasn't supposed to come here, it was supposed to go to China. I've clearly been double crossed. Which mean's I'll be looking for a new route supervisor."
He said that last sentence with a lot of malice, directed right at poor Lee Sung who was still crying. The boy flinched at the words and tried to apologize but he shuddered through a sob instead that ended in him blowing a snot bubble.
Jesus what the hell had Wo Fat done to the poor kid?
Steve grabbed a hold of him and tugged him away before the kid choked on his own snot and sobs.
"Does Rowan know what you're looking for?"
"Hell no! She'd want to help me find it. She's loyal like that," he said with a crooked gin and then he sobered up. "You think I'm really going to let my sister get anywhere near that? Specially if I don't know what her… unique abilities… will do with it."
Yeah great save there.
"How long have you known that my case is tied to your missing shipment?"
"Since you told me how they were smuggling the contraband," he said.
So basically before Steve walked into that room. Wonderful. Thanks Wo. Why did he think that the two of them would work as a team on this?
"Okay, come on, upstairs. You, sit tight," he said to Lee who had managed to stop crying now that Wo's icy rage was no longer directed at him.
"Do you know who has it?"
"My missing shipment?"
"No, Wo, your heroin. Obviously I mean the Uranium," Steve snapped as they walked towards the elevator.
"If I knew who had it, Steven, I'd know where it was, now wouldn't I?"
The attitude was not appreciated. Especially since this was clearly all Wo Fat's fault. Shipping Uranium, the idiot.
They got upstairs and found that the others were looking at a grainy photo that was up on their screen across from the smart table. Obvious this was a person of interest in the case, but Wo surprised him.
"What's he doing on the screen. What did he do now?" Wo asked and they all turned to him.
"You know him?"
"Sure, that's Jared Namal. He's a bomb maker. Works for a bunch of different cells. Puts together weapons for them for the right price. Did he jack my Uranium, is that it?"
"Wait a second, it's Uranium. The car had Uranium in it?" Kono asked.
Grover turned to Wo. "What the hell you shipping that for?"
Wo Fat groaned again. "You know, it's like you guys forget what I do. I'm an arms dealer. I ship weapons and materials that can be used to create weapons."
"Yeah but why the hell would you bring it to an island your sister lives on?"
"It wasn't supposed to come here. It was supposed to go to China for this new missile they're testing," he snapped. And then he paused. "And you didn't hear that from me either."
Right time to change the topic. "Where did you get that photo?"
Chin, who had been shaking his head at Wo Fat, turned to Steve. "From the dash cam from the cop cruiser. It's badly damaged but we managed to salvage that photo. And he's right, Facial Rec IDed him as Jared Namal."
"Is he usually that desperate, cause, I mean, he took out a cop in broad daylight…"
Wo shrugged. "To be honest, I don't know. I don't spend a lot of time with him. He uh… he might have joined with a radical group since I last worked with him, but I wouldn't know which one. I don't keep track of people who I don't really need, you know?"
Why did Steve get the feeling that Wo stopped working with Namal the second he had Rowan in his life consistently?
Steve shook his head.
"I uh… I could get his address though."
"Really? How?" Kono asked.
"He's logged in the app," Wo said absently already going for his phone.
"Wait a second, you logged in a bomb maker into Rowan's app. As what? As a contact for her to search out if necessary?"
"Uh… yeah. It's always good for her to know who I work with, who's on the app, who she'd be safe with."
"Wo. How… how the hell would she be safe with a fucking bomb maker? I mean… what the actually fuck."
Wo turned narrowed eyes at him and then said: "Do you want his address or not, McGarrett?" When Steve just glared at him, he smiled. "Then stop fucking complaining."
Yeah. He wasn't enjoying working with Wo Fat anymore.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
There was a bit of an argument but Wo Fat eventually agreed to let Steve take custody of the Uranium. Even though the Chinese Government was going to be mad at him for losing their Uranium. He then said Steve would owe him. Steve had reminded him that Wo still owed him for the Year of Deceit, and then he dropped the man back off at the McGarrett house so Rowan could send him back to Japan.
Then he and the rest of the Five-0 team put on these protective blue suits and air filtered mask on over their Kevlar and battle gear and then stormed Jared Namal's rental.
The man was clearly not expecting it, and instead of going in for questioning he chose to blow his own brains out.
But Steve found the suitcase with the Uranium and that was all that mattered.
With the radioactive material safely stored away and in the right custody, Steve headed over to Max to confront him about his leaving for Africa. Max had asked how he knew and Steve had told him.
Stephanie McGarrett.
Max had laughed. He said he had a feeling Rowan would tell him the truth. He was surprised she had held onto it for so long.
Two months.
Steve told Max that he understood. Africa was an amazing experience for him, and Steve would have only wished Max the best and for him to be happy. Max had thanked him for understanding. Then Steve had gotten the call.
The call saying that the brief case that had registered off the chart's radiation didn't actually have the Uranium in it. They had only detected residual radiation.
That meant that the Uranium in that briefcase had been off the charts strong. It meant that, either Namal had sold it before they got there, or Wo Fat had found a way to get it back. And considering the first option meant a terrorist group hidden on Hawaii now had a weapon that could wipe out half of the population, he was hoping that Wo had pulled one over on him.
Yeah who have ever thought that Steve would be praying that Wo Fat had stolen Uranium from him? That was a cruel twist of fate, and extremely ironic.
Steve raced home, hoping that Wo Fat had stayed for dinner and instead found that Rowan was by herself. Not good, not good.
His wife smiled happily at him, no doubt happy that he was home on time and they could go out for dinner like a family like he promised, but Steve was too panicked to be happy to see her. And that was saying something.
"Where's your brother?"
"He… he went back to Japan, wrote of his missing shipment. Said you confiscated it… said you're gonna owe him..."
"Pull him back. Pull him back right now."
"Well usually I give him warning…"
"NOW! Rowan!"
Rowan jumped and gave a little bit of a tug on nothing and then Wo Fat popped into their kitchen with a glass in his hand.
For a second he just stood there blinking his eyes and then he took in Steve and Rowan standing there and then turned his eyes to the glass in his hand.
It was completely frozen.
"Goddamn it, Rowan!" he shouted, as he slammed the frozen drink down to the table. "What? Why am I here? What is happening right now?"
"Where's the Uranium?" Steve asked.
"Uranium?" Rowan echoed. "Isn't that stuff radioactive?"
Wo Fat glanced to her and then back to Steve. "You confiscated it, Steven… I mean really and you say I have memory problems."
"Yes, except that briefcase we found had nothing in it. We were just picking up residual radiation."
Wo Fat's eyes widened and he immediately went to his phone. Steve watched him pull up the Sanctuary app and then scrolled through some feature of it before he turned back up to him.
"Sandy isn't reporting anything unusual…"
"Wo, I know you have it."
"No I don't. I swear. I'm also smart enough to not go near that without the proper suit and gear."
No. No. See it had to be with Wo because if it wasn't that meant it was still on the island in the hands of someone who was going to do something terrible with it. And Steve had no idea who it would be.
"Did you lose the Uranium? Is it on the island? Do you need me to find it?"
Steve turned that panicked look onto Rowan, who, with her powers could probably take something like Uranium and make it even more unstable and then turned the look back to Wo. Her brother realized right away what Steve was really afraid of. Of Rowan getting involved. Of her getting close to radioactive material to help him, which she would do without a second thought.
He shot a glance to Steve and then turned to Rowan. "He's right I stole it, I just didn't want to admit it."
It was a lie. A blatant lie. But Wo Fat lied well. As his sister, she should have known that. She could read strings, couldn't she read his and tell that he was lying?
"Really?" she asked.
"Yes. I couldn't take the loss so I stole it back. I uh… I was hoping Steve wouldn't figure out it was me cause I was worried you'd make me give it back to him."
Rowan blinked her eyes at him and then tilted her head to the side much like a confused puppy. "Did you handle it without a suit?"
"No I was protected the whole time. It's uh, it's already been shipped off island. It's heading to China. They're a little annoyed that it's going to be late, but at least they'll get it," Wo said softly.
Rowan nodded as if all of that added up. It was absolutely flabbergasting that Wo could lie to her so easily and Rowan would just believe him. Especially since she called him out ALL the time.
"Ro… could I uh… I need to talk to Steve, is that okay? Can I do that without you?" Wo asked and Rowan nodded.
"Okay, but be quick he promised to take us out for dinner."
Wo Fat nodded and then grabbed Steve's arm and dragged him out of house and onto the lanai.
Once he was certain that Rowan couldn't hear them he hissed: "You seriously lost it?"
"The briefcase was reading as off the charts. We've never seen radiation that high before, not as residual, how fucking potent was that stuff?"
"Uh… pretty fucking potent. Fuck. She can't know it's on the island McGarrett. She'll go looking for it and I just…"
Steve nodded, yeah he got it. "I know," he said cutting him off. "Nice save in there. I'm impressed she bought that lie."
"I don't know what it is about her but she always believes me. You'd think she wouldn't trust me anymore," Wo said softly. "I don't like lying to her though. Figured this would be safer."
Steve nodded. "What do we do? Can you… can you find it?"
"Without using her powers, no."
"What about Sandy?"
"Sandy would be able to, but it wouldn't alert either of us until it was set. Unless Rowan came really close to the bomb," he said. "Sandy's got a bomb detector, but she's not logging anything, so they gotta have it hidden somewhere without cameras or tech."
God that wasn't good.
"I know you don't want to hear this but you're just going to have to wait for it to pop back up."
He was right. Steve didn't want to hear that. He wanted this bomb as far away from his wife as possible but knowing her, knowing how she was, there was a good chance she'd stumble across it.
Worrying about a uranium dirty bomb going off and taking out his family was going to be a prime feature in his nightmares until he found it. For his own sanity he was going to have to find it as soon as possible.
