A/N: Happy Wednesday my wonderful readers. So, here were are with the next update. It should end rather cutely and we've got one of her brothers showing up. Next chapter is going to be filled with nothing but cute stuff. I'm actually really excited for it. As always don't forget to leave a review and I'll see you guys on Monday!
Chapter 365
Rowan followed Bumpy up to a building that seemed to be a guard post of sorts. Already she could see that it had large windows, several office chairs and, quite luckily, several doors she could use, other then that one she was just about to walk in to.
She knew what she was going to have to do but all she could think about was how mad her brothers were going to be when they found out she had gotten involved in this. And that was only narrowly eclipse how mad Steve was going to be when he found out.
Yes, he had asked her told her to be annoying but she had a feeling he didn't mean this kind of annoying. More like, let Sandy fuck with them and have her in a passive, safe role.
She'd just have to deal with that when Steve came back because she didn't have her phone so he couldn't call her.
She looked at the office and then turned to the man who was patiently waiting for her verdict. Time for the weird part of the conversation.
"Could you just… leave me alone for a couple of minutes?" she asked. "I'm sorry, I just need… some time… I'll be right out."
Bumpy clearly thought this weird but he nodded and left her alone.
She counted to ten to make sure he was gone and then went to the closest supply cupboard and opened up the door. Once she poked her head through, she was in Con's apartment.
Except she didn't see him, which was odd, because the strings said he was there.
Maybe he was in his bedroom. She could already hear voices, murmuring voices, coming from the bedroom. It was odd that the door was closed, usually he slept with it open, so he could have a clear line of sight, but if it was shut that was probably where he was. Rowan opened the door and found him in there alright, with a woman.
Rowan couldn't help it she just froze in the door way unable to move. His partner, a buxom fake blonde with no tan lines on her body, spotted her first. And then screamed in his ear and clung to him, which just threw off Con's rhythm and had him slipping down to her.
He got half a yelp of: "Jesus!" and then he turned to where the woman was pointing. He spotted his sister standing there and Rowan finally found it in her to move.
"ROWAN?!" Con shrieked but she just shouted an apology and then shut the door.
"Sorry!" she said again from behind the closed door. "I'm sorry."
There was the sound of scrambling and the woman crying out, but not in a happy sexual way and then Con was ripping the door open, his sheets around his waist.
"So fucking help me, this better be one hell of an emergency or I'm going to wring your neck!"
Rowan just winced. "Uh… well… it's not an emergency but you'd be annoying the US Marshalls…"
"I hate you. You know that? I hate you," he said. "Go back, I'll text you when I'm ready."
Rowan nodded and went back to the door he came through in the first place and left. She only had to wait ten minutes before she got a text saying to pull him, so she did.
He was still scowling at her though. "Did… did you… you know… finish…"
"Shut up," he snapped, dropping the bag he had in his hands to the floor. "Talk me through what's going on here."
"Right, so we're on sovereign territory, so like, we're not in the United States anymore. But like we are, cause we're still in Hawaii. We chased a murder suspect here and they won't give him up…"
"Okay… so, I'm bagging a murder suspect?"
"No, no, Steve's still trying to prove if he's guilty or not and they think he's innocent. We want to follow their wishes. Which is, if we can prove he's guilty by sundown they'll give him to us. But the governor sent the US Marshals to pressure them and they're being dicks. They already cut service to the area, and they're talking about cutting power and water next, and like… families live here, you know?"
"Right so we're here to fuck with the Marshals, got it," he said. "So, like… you want me to take a high perch and snipe some people?"
Rowan glared at him. "No, I want to fuck with them and not kill them…"
"Then why the fuck did you bring me here Rowan?" he thundered. "I kill people. It's my job! This whole, staying back and being annoying is killing me. I am so fucking bored! All I have is these moments, where you need me to kill a bitch and you're telling me I can't even kill a single person?"
"Uh… well not yet…"
"Oh my god. I could be fucking some pretty girl I don't remember the name of and you got me here being annoying. I swear to god I hate you. I really, really hate you right now. Worst sister ever."
Rowan blinked her eyes. She had never seen him that mad before. Lies, yes, she had, after he and Wo got her from the Luxor's pit boss. But he had never called her a bad sister before. That was kind of hurtful.
Con shoulder his bag and headed for the door. Rowan scrambled to keep up.
"Wait… where are you going?"
"To do a permitter check. They're not playing fair right? So, after cutting service and water and power the next move is to send a team in, but they're not going to go through the front…"
Anything else he was going to say came to a complete and utter halt with the sound of a high-pitched engine. Rowan was looking around but Con's eyes were pointed skyward. Rowan followed his gaze in time to see the drones crest the trees. Two of them. They were doing aerial surveillance.
Yeah, they couldn't let that happen.
Con lifted his rifle but Rowan put a hand to his arm. "Seriously, I can't even shoot the fucking drones?" he hissed, but she ignored him.
"Sit boy!" she called and both drones powered off and crashed to the dirt.
Then the two of them just stood there staring at them before her brother turned to her.
"Jesus, Wo just thought of everything, didn't he?" Con asked and Rowan nodded her head.
"It's a relatively knew feature but I've been dying to try that," she said shooting him a grin that he returned.
"Right, tell your guys I'mma be running around rogue," he said heading down the hill, no doubt to get a better view of what they were dealing with. He only took three steps before he called over his shoulder: "I'm still mad at you!"
Rowan shook her head. She knew better of course. He might be mad at her now but it wouldn't last long. He loved her too much to be that mad at her. Hopefully Steve felt the same way when he found out what she had done.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve and Danny were driving down the streets, Steve in the driver's seat, despite all of Danny's complaining and Rowan's voice nagging him in the back of his head.
They had a new suspect. Devon Berris was the brother of Kanuha's parole officer. His brother had talked to him and he had given Kanuha a job. At first, he hadn't been on their radar but then they clocked that someone had used that storage unit's gate code access, and when they checked the cameras they got him and his car.
They were thinking that Devon had to be his partner, because how else would he have known about the storage unit? But Kono didn't think the three of them were in on it together, she thought that the brother of a parole officer was taking advantage of Kanuha. Was making him do the heists, or not letting him out when he wanted out. It was most likely him who killed Akemoto and was now trying to pin it on Kanuha.
But they had talked to Kanuha, he knew that they knew about the heists. Why didn't he tell them about Berris then? Danny had said that he was probably afraid, he had been under this mans thumb for months, he no doubt felt like he couldn't tell people the truth. And who would have believed him? It was the word of an ex-con over an upstanding member of the community.
Well, Five-0 was only him now and Steve and Danny were on their way to pick him up. He hadn't been at his store so they were heading to his house.
The problem was that Danny hadn't said a word in a very long time. He had been silent since they found out Berris wasn't as his shop. He just kept staring out the window and playing with his lips. He clearly had something on his mind but Steve knew, unless he asked him, he wasn't going to tell him what he was thinking. He was legitimately waiting for Steve to ask him.
"Still," Steve said breaking the silence between them. "I still can't read your mind."
"Excuse me?"
"You get this look on your face like I'm supposed to know what you're thinking, but, uh, I don't."
"Huh. You know, it's funny, there's two things on this Earth that I'm very grateful for. One is that you cannot read my mind. The second is this seatbelt right here."
Great so they were back to arguing about his driving. Great. Wonderful. Here he was thinking that his friend was actually in need of some moral support and guidance and Steve wanted to be a good friend and help him, but no. This was all some elaborate ruse to make Steve ask and initiate the bitchfest. Seriously, how did he keep falling for that?
"Only two? Just two?" Steve asked. "Not the birth of your daughter, or getting to know your beautiful little boy. Just me not having a superpower and your seatbelt, that's it?"
"Right now, yeah."
"I'm glad you can't read mine," Steve snarled.
"No, no, I can read yours."
"Oh, you can read mine?" Steve asked. Well that was news to him.
"Oh, yea, yeah."
"Really? What am I thinking?"
"Uh. Rowan," Danny said and that wasn't fair because Steve was always thinking about Rowan. "And you're… you're hungry, very hungry. Which would lead to you thinking about Rowan and first breakfast…"
"I never should have told you about that, you better not tell her I told you about that!"
If Rowan found out that Danny knew intimate details of their sex life, right down to the nicknames she gave some of his moves, she'd fucking leave him. Or worse, make him stay on Danny's couch.
"Well, now that we're off first breakfast, you're thinking about wings, and you're wondering if I have my wallet in my pocket. Which probably leads back to Rowan because she makes more than you and I bet you anything you can convince her to buy food for you, specially if you do something nice for her, like buy her a new book or something. You're also probably thinking about that new issues of Guns & Ammo that you got in the mail this morning…"
Steve was trying not to smile because, as Danny droned, he was thinking of Rowan and that definitely always put a smile on his face.
"Other than that, it's pretty echo-y in there I'm guessing."
"Used to, when I met you, you were funny. I actually thought you were funny," Steve said with a shake of his head.
"You didn't say I was wrong."
"Course not, half of what you said was Rowan, and yes, I think about Rowan a lot. I'm thinking about her right now, because thinking about her drowns your stupidity out," Steve snapped. "Now shut up, I'm going to call Chin, tell him what's going on."
"Be sure to call Rowan though."
"Okay, you know what, let it go, I think about Ro a normal amount for a man who is in love with his…"
"No stupid, they have a signal jammer up at the site, Rowan's phone is the only one with service," Danny said and Steve nodded, yeah, he had forgotten about that.
Steve was just grateful for the excuse to call his wife. He almost dialed her number with glee. But it wasn't her who picked up, and it should have been. What he got instead was Chin.
"Why do you have Rowan's phone?"
"They cut service, remember?"
Yes, Steve had just gotten the reminder, but that didn't explain why Rowan didn't have her own phone.
"Yeah, I know that, but why didn't Rowan pick up her phone?"
"Well she's up in the territory, she got annoyed with the Marshals and said if they were going to cheat, she was going to make sure that the other guys had a level playing field. I will say they lost eight drones before they figured out Ro was fucking with them."
"Yeah, which brother did she pull?"
"Rabbit."
Oh, he probably wouldn't like finding out that Steve's friends called him Rabbit. He was going to have to make sure that Sin Nombre never found that out.
"He's been shooting them down, huh?"
"Nope, apparently Sanctuary has a code for downing drones. Rowan's like a kid in a candy shop, can hear her laughing from here."
Yeah when he told her to be annoying, he didn't mean like this. Well at least she was having fun with it.
"Look, we're going to need everybody to stand down immediately, alright. And that includes my wife and her assassin. We're currently on the way to question a new suspect. Devon Berris."
"Berris? We just let him inside to see Kanuha."
"What he's there now?"
"Yeah."
"And where's Rowan?"
"Uh… last I saw she was with Kanuha…"
"So you're saying that our suspect is there, to see Kanuha, who is with my wife?!" Steve cried. Yeah, and if she was there, Sin Nombre probably wasn't very far behind. "Get him out of there Chin! Before she kills him!"
Fucking hell if Rowan had Sin Nombre kill the guy before Steve got there, he was going to have to do a lot of explaining to the Marshals, and he wasn't sure he could explain the whole: "My wife's older brothers are a crime boss and an assassin" without getting her in trouble.
Damn he had to get there. Fast.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Rowan and Con had left Kanuha to sit in the little house that Bumpy had them in. She had been introduced to him relatively quickly, where it was established that, no matter how hard she tried, she could not get his name right. She was outside the back of that little house, where she could still see Kanuha through the windows, though at that moment she was more concerned with Con who was standing on that roof with his brand-new sniper riflescope he had gotten from Doris for Christmas. He was using it to keep track of the Marshals who were getting more and more antsy since she had taken down their drones and it was getting closer to sundown.
"Right so they've got snipers getting in position, and I can see more soldier guys getting ready to move. Which is bullshit cause we got at least another two hours," Con called down to her but Rowan wasn't paying attention to him anymore.
"Why you do it?"
Kanuha was sitting across from a black man that Rowan didn't recognize. She hadn't even seen him walk in. And it didn't look like it was a good chat, Kanuha looked afraid.
"Because I had to! I couldn't trust your partner to keep his mouth shut. You never should've told him."
Oh shit, oh shit. Real murderer! Real Murderer! Where the hell was Steve?
"Sandy," Rowan whispered to Sin Nombre phone. "Activate all listening devices in the area and record this conversation."
She had booted Sandy up on silent mode when the Marshals showed up so instead of voicing the acknowledgement of the command, she just did it.
"He was my friend. He wasn't going to say anything."
"You're wrong. He told me that he was gonna go to HPD, okay? Both of us would've gone down. I did what I had to do."
"What are you doing down there?" Sin Nombre called and Rowan immediately moved away from the door she was hovering in and waved him off. He realized right away that hat meant he had to be quiet but she knew he wasn't going to stay up there.
After a momentary pause where this new guy listened to the area to see if someone was actually around he continued. "Here's what's gonna happen now. You're going to tell them that Akemoto approached you after you got out. Talked you into doing those robberies. They'll believe that. I mean, it was his equipment that you used, right? Then you'll say that you tried to walk away but Akemoto wouldn't let you. There was a struggle, you grabbed the gun in self-defence. I'll talk to my brother, get him involved. You can plead down. He'll take care of you on the inside. Line up, uh, early release for good behaviour."
Wow, what a fucking dick.
"Are you listening to me?" the man asked just as Rowan tried to peak in again. Kanuha was wearing a thoughtful look and that could not have meant good things.
"He came to you, huh?" he asked.
This surprised the other man. "What?"
Oh, black strings… black strings in that cabin, not good not good. She had to do something.
"Akemoto wanted you to let me go, dind't he? He was trying to help me. He felt guilty for what happened all of those years ago and he was trying to make it right."
Rowan stepped into the cabin before things could get ugly.
"Oh hello, who are you?" she asked as she quickly crossed the small space and then put herself in between this new man and Kanuha. He looked her up and down and she figured what he was wondering how much she heard. And she figured why lie? "Yeah, heard the whole conversation, so…."
He got up quicker than Rowan imagined, and then just shoved her. Took one hand and pushed with all his might. She only managed to get half a yelp of "Con," out of her mouth before she hit the ground. By then Kanuha had gotten up and started wrestling with Berris. But that would have been because at that point he had the gun out.
There was no scream of freeze, there was nothing except the click of a gun behind Berris' ear and when he half turned, he found a man behind him. He was in a white tee-shirt and jeans, his black hair was hanging over one side of his face, but those yellowish-brown eyes were staring at him in an unwavering fashion.
"He attacked me…"
"Look man I ain't no cop," the man said. "I'm here for one reason and that's to protect him. So I don't give a flying fuck who attacked who. Get off my mans or I'm gonna blow a hole in your head so large you'll need a closed fucking casket."
The girl he had shoved popped up from the ground, a scowl on her face. "He hit me Con," she hissed. "He hit me!"
The man, this Con, turned a look onto Devon that clearly made him nervous. "You hit my mami?" he asked, and then he was putting the gun away. "Oh, fuck the bullet I'mma make you hurt with my own two hands."
And then before Berris could do anything con had tackled the man to the ground.
Chin came in to Kanuha staring down at the two men wrestling while Rowan was standing on the table shouting: "Hit him harder! Hit him in the dick! Right in the dick!"
"Rowan!" Chin shouted and she looked back up to him, "Sin Nombre, stop! Get off of him!"
Sin Nombre wouldn't listen so Chin had to stoop down and pull him off. As Chin got him up, Sin Nombre he planted his foot right onto Devon Berris's groin and pushed down with all his might. Which left Berris a groaning mess all curled up around himself. Yeah, that was probably going to hurt for a long while.
"Jesus, was that necessary?" Chin asked and a breathless Sin Nombre turned to him.
"Hell yeah," he said. "He put hands on my mami, he's lucky I didn't snap his neck."
Oh shit, Devon had hit Rowan? Oh boy, no one tell Steve.
Sin Nombre went straight to Rowan putting his hands to her hips, as she put her hands to his shoulders and he helped her down from the table.
"You okay? Do you need an icepack? Where did he hit you anyway?"
"Oh, he didn't hit me, he just shoved me to the ground," she said. "But I figured telling you I got hit would make you angrier so I just went with that."
Sin Nombre stared down at her with a poisonous look on his face. "Hating you more and more, mami. I swear to god. I swear. One of these days, I'mma gonna hurt you and it'll all be your fault."
"I got this guy here on tape talking about how he's gonna make Kanwhoo-ah…" "My name is Kanuha "Yeah whatever. I got proof. That's what matters here. So… yeah…."
Sin Nombre just shook his head. "God, I just can't even with you right now," he said and stormed out.
Chin turned to Rowan no doubt concerned for the safety of the others, because an annoyed assassin was a trigger-happy assassin but Rowan just waved it off.
"He'll be okay," she said. Well if she wasn't concerned, he wasn't going to be concerned.
"We, uh, we need to get you down to the gate, Steve's here and he's panicking."
Rowan nodded and then run off, no doubt as excited to see her husband as Steve was anxious to see her. Here's hoping she didn't tell Steve that Berris shoved her while he was still on the premises.
She might have been able to save him from Sin Nombre, but if Steve found out, there was no way Berris would get by him. Even if Rowan told him to stop. Though knowing her she'd egg him on.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Instead of sending Sin Nombre back to wherever she had pulled him from, she sent them to their home. They were all invited to a party at the Sovereign state to celebrate that they worked together and proven that Kanuha was not a killer, just a thief.
She wanted to get dressed up before heading back up, and she was bringing Nahele with her, which just made Steve smile because he loved doing things with his wife and his son.
Rowan had gotten into one of her designer sundresses that was a hunter green with an open back, except for one strand of pearls that ran down her spine. She was in green flats, not red bottoms that time, and she had done up all her make up.
Sin Nombre borrowed one of Steve's shirts but stayed in his jeans as they were fine for him.
Both Steve and Nahele were in light blue matching shirts. Steve didn't like being a matchy-matchy couple but he sure did like matching with his son.
By the time they got up there everything was ready to go. All the food was being served buffet style, they had Hawaii live music, and all of their friends were there.
Sin Nombre was much more sociable than Wo. He laughed and told jokes with the others but even in this jovial setting that dangerous aura was still there. Steve could see it in the way his eyes kept sweeping over shadows and the perimeter. He was probably still packing and ready to attack if it looked like there was a problem.
On the one hand, Steve was grateful that he was still looking out but he was also sad for him. Because it looked like the man never rested. Even Sin Nombre deserved a day off.
They were part way through the meal when Bumpy stood up with a drink in hand. Everyone went quiet to hear what he had to say, but his eyes were turned to Rowan.
"Today we were reminded that not everyone is like your ancestors. Today we had a haole stand with us, and for us, for no reason other than to make sure that we were treated fairly," he said and Steve glanced to Rowan. "From now on, Rowan Pierce, you are ohana. You will be welcome here until the day you die."
"Really?" she asked smiling widely at him. She smiled almost weepily at them. "Okay so my mascara's too expensive to ruin it by crying but I just want you to know that I'm feeling a lot of things on the inside and this is totally the sweetest thing anyone has every done for me."
This earned a few chuckles and Rowan began to fan her face as if moving the air to her eyes would keep the tears at bay. "And let me tell you. I'mma be wearing out my welcome, right away. Cause I'm running from the law like ALL the time."
They all devolved into laughter while Sin Nombre turned to her and said: "You married the law…"
"Yeah and he nags!"
Steve just wrapped an arm around her shoulder and held her close to him. "Yeah, I nag, just you wait until I get you home, you're gonna get more than a nagging."
"No! Bumpy! Save me! Don't let this haole take me!" she cried and they all broke out into laughter again.
Hell and earth could come between them and that still wouldn't stop Steve from finding her. So, a Sovereign state wouldn't keep her away from him. But he didn't have to worry about that, because he was never going to give his Ro a reason to leave him. Ever again.
