A/N: Well hello there my wonderful readers. It's been a hot minute hasn't it! I'm sorry I've been so scattered guys but I'm starting a new job and I'm still going through trainings. I don't know how this is going to go and I don't know how much time I'm going to get to write. So instead of promising you three updates a week, until I'm in better command of how much time I'll have, I think we're going to do one update a week. It could be any of the three days. So on either Monday, Wednesday or Friday. I know that's not ideal but until I know what my work load is like this is what I'm going to be doing. As for this chapter we got a lot of fun and funny moments as Steve tries to corral Danny, Rowan, Wo Fat and Con. So lots of frustration too! As always don't forget to leave a review or drop a like or a fav and I'll see you guys next week.
Chapter 380
Steve was not a happy camper. He rarely was when he had to go to the doctor, especially since his doctor really liked to give him unreasonable conditions to help him heal. Especially because apparently his road to healing had had a lot of bumps in it.
He had wanted Rowan to come with him today, Rowan had come with him to almost all his other appointments, but she had been unavailable. Apparently, despite him telling her to put this in her calendar she had completely forgotten that it was set and had scheduled something else.
A Brother's Day.
This was because both Wo Fat and Conejo had complained that they never saw her unless she was in danger. And no, they did not count Steve's birthday, because that was with everyone. They meant one on one time.
Steve was absolutely floored that Wo Fat willingly wanted to spend one on one time with Rowan who would be taking him to somewhere that he normally would have found annoying. It really didn't match up with the version of Wo Fat that he had known and detested, but he really was starting to create a completely conflicting version in Steve's head. A lasting version that he would have to learn to normalize the new version.
But they did have a point.
They really did only see her when she needed be rescued.
Combine that with how surprised she had been when he reminded her about the appointment, he realized that she had forgotten. Truly. She had been like a deer in the headlights. Telling her brothers to go without her and she'd join them once Steve was done, but he couldn't let her do that. Not when she was so understanding about his work coming in between all of their plans at the last minute.
So, though he didn't want to he had let her leave with the two of them.
At least they were staying on the island.
But it meant that Steve was going to go to the doctor alone. This was a little scary for him because today he'd be getting very important information, whether or not he'd be fully cleared for work, because… he kind of wasn't yet.
However, when he texted Danny to tell him Rowan had fallen through as his doctor's appointment buddy, Danny immediately invited himself along. And Steve could not get him to agree to stay at home.
So, Danny came to pick him up and Steve figured how bad could this go? Except it could go bad. Like really bad idea.
Instead of Danny actually being supportive like Steve wanted him to be, he was causing issues. He chatted up the nurse until it was time for Steve to go back into the doctor's room. Danny actually came in with him and then chatted up with a completely different nurse as she did all the test that were necessary. And, of course, she wanted his shirt off for these tests.
Yes, they had to see how his scar was healing up, mainly cause he kept reopening it, but they were always demanding his shirt off, right away. He was starting to think that they were doing that cause he was just nice to look at.
Once the nurse had left Danny refused to stay still. He wandered around, looked at every single poster before finally starting to go through the drawers.
God he'd rather have Rowan's fussing and worrying than this.
"Stop! Would you be doing this if Charlie was here?" Steve cried finally finished with Danny's insanity. He didn't even bother to look back at wherever it was Danny was standing behind him.
"No."
"No?" Steve echoed.
"No, because I would be setting a bad example," Danny said turning back to him. He was walking back to where Steve was sitting, still with his shirt off as requested. He didn't know what Danny had in his hands but it couldn't be good. "Now, if you would please do me this one favor?"
Steve sighed. It was one of those things with the light and the lens that they put in your ear to look at stuff.
"No. I will not bend over and cough, with your cold hands," he snapped.
"It's not that kind of test," Danny said. "Just look that way. It's something I always wanted to do. Can you do me a favor, please?"
There was no point in arguing. He might as well just go along with it.
With a sigh he turned his head in the direction Danny wanted him to, so that he could stick that stupid thing in his ear.
"Thank you."
God, even without looking he could feel Danny's ten million watt smile directed at him as he stuck that stupid thing in his ear.
See this is why he wanted Rowan here. Rowan wouldn't be pulling this shit. Rowan would be between his legs, hands on his chest because she liked to pet him. He could be kissing her right now, but she was off with her brothers having Brother Day. And she still couldn't tell him what that entailed.
She couldn't even promise him that the stuff they were doing was legal.
After a few seconds of looking Danny said: "Wait a minute," and Steve rolled his eyes.
"Oh funny."
He was going to pretend he couldn't see his brain, that's what this was. That was the joke.
"Nothing," Steve said just as Danny said: "There's nothing in there." And then he added: "There's nothing inside," in a German accent like he was fucking Sigmund Freud.
Steve did not laugh and Danny didn't seem to be done. "Sorry, come on, come here, let me look," he said and though Steve didn't know why he turned his head again and let Danny stick the stupid thing in his ear again.
Except he put it in too far. "Ow! Easy! I mean… it's delicate in there."
Danny apologized, fixed himself and then said: "Ah, there it is! There's the brain of Steve McGarrett. IT looks like a pea or like a little bead."
Great so now his brain was small. Fuck. HE didn't need this today. Maybe he could call Rowan and beg her to come, he wouldn't even care if her brothers were with her.
"You're an idiot. Get off. Off," he ordered pushing Danny away. Luckily for him the doctor came in.
"Commander McGarrett," Dr. Kohashi said. HE was a nice guy who had been with Steve through all his treatments
Steve half smiled at him and then pointed to Danny. "I couldn't get a sitter for my kid," he said. "I'm sorry. I had to bring him along."
"Well, it's better than the crying wife," he said and Steve nodded.
Rowan had been in this office three times already, crying each time, because Steve had reopened his wound in some way and she cried when she was worried. But worried crying was tears falling but she still seemed calm and stoic, the wailing happened only when it had reopened during sex and she was certain she had killed him.
"Nope, no she was busy today," he said and the man smiled.
Danny took Dr. Kohashi's hand. "Detective Danny Williams," he said as he shook it. "So Ro cried huh? I'd like to say that it was probably only a one-time thing but he's constantly making her cry."
"Danny!" Steve warned but Danny just waved him off. "Okay, please, why don't you wait out there, so the adults can talk…."
"Actually, this is gonna be pretty quick," Dr. Kohashi said.
"Oh good! Cause I promised the crying wife an update cause this big lug over here doesn't tell her the real things you say."
That was because he had been expressly told not to engage in sex with his wife because he had popped his stitches twice and then reopened his healing incision having sex with her. And he completely disregarded that command because… I mean… come on, have you seen his wife?
Which lead to reopening the wound again and Ro wailing in this office, again, and finding out that Steve had deliberately withheld information from him. And then she cried even harder and it was a whole scene, to the point where Dr. Kohashi actually asked if she needed a paper bag to breathe into, or sedation.
She had been withholding sex ever since. The last time they had had sex was his birthday and that was almost a month ago.
"According to your tests everything looks good," he said. "Even though your postop recovery was a lot slower than I expected. But your new liver is doing well. I'm guessing you managed to keep the wife off of you?"
"No," Danny said. "She kept him off of her. And his inability to stay away from his wife was minor compared to all the real reasons his recovery was slow."
"Danny…" Steve warned but his friend ignored him.
"Any, um, signs of radiation poisoning?" he asked and Steve sharply inhaled. What the hell was this idiot doing?
"Radiation?" Dr. Kohashi said almost laughing and then he turned to Steve. "Is he kidding?"
Steve glared at him. "Why would you bring that up?"
"Well, I'll tell him," Danny said turning back to Dr. Kohashi. "We, uhm… we were exposed to uranium, almost a month ago, him and I. We had to defuse a dirty bomb which, uh, was gonna take out half the population, so we were doing a good thing. Rowan didn't mention this?"
"No, she did not," Dr. Kohashi said glaring at Steve who was really contemplating just sucker punching Danny in the jaw to shut him up.
"Well, she mentioned she might have forgot, but that's okay, that's what I'm here for," he said. "Anyway, he strapped on a… uhm… a car battery to protect his vitals. And uh… both Ro and I, we wanted to make sure that we know that he's good…"
Dr. Kohashi looked far from impressed.
"Okay, and is that it?" Steve asked.
"Yeah. Just keep taking your anti-rejection medication and I would say you could slowly start to resume normal physical activity."
"Right, so like… sleeping with my wife, right?" he asked cause really that was the important part here. Cause if this guy said no and he had to be dry for the foreseeable future this doctor was going to have to prescribe him something for blue balls.
"Uh… yes, but none of the moves that brought you in the last two times," Dr. Kohashi said and Steve nodded. Right, so Ro was going to have to be on top, not her favourite but doable.
Danny however had caught something. "Wait a second. Start normal physical activity… only now? He wasn't supposed to do it before?"
Dr. Kohashi looked confused. "What do you mean?"
"Well, I mean, when you say normal physical activity, you mean, uh…"
"A little cardio. Some light weight training. Nothing too strenuous with your wife," he said, making sure to really stress that last one.
But Steve wasn't worried about that now, because Danny now knew that he hadn't exactly been cleared for field work like he had said he had been. And if Danny knew that meant he was going to tell Rowan and then he wouldn't be getting laid because she was mad and punishing him.
"So, uh, that would have been a no to hand-to-hand combat, or parkour, or jumping out of airplanes, that… that should have been out? All that should be out right now, right?"
Dr. Kohashi was staring at Steve. "What is he talking about?"
"Danny shut up!"
"What you didn't know about that?"
"Did you come in here with work related injuries and blame them on sex with your wife?"
"No!" Steve cried right away while Danny stood there sniggering. "No… I swear… all three times I came in for the stuff with Ro was legitimately stuff with Ro…"
Because all the other times no one had noticed and he refused to go to the doctor about it. The stuff with Ro had happened with her and she said either he was letting her drive him to his doctor or they were voiding there. His choice.
He chose to drive.
Dr. Kohashi didn't seem to believe him. "All of that is out," he said with a glare and then he turned to Danny. "Will you be telling Mrs. McGarrett?"
"I can."
"I'll call too. Just to be sure."
"That's not necessary," Steve said but Dr. Kohashi looked far from pleased and he had a feeling that the guy was definitely going to call Rowan and snitch on him.
But then his phone rang and he didn't have time to think about it anymore.
They had caught a case.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
This case was a weird one.
They had an HMP Cutter had been found out in the middle of the sea out by a couple that was in distress. Their boat was sinking and they had spotted the cutter and thought that they were saved. They had pulled up, boarded the ship trying to find someone to help them. What they found was a whole dead crew.
It had been missing for a while before that couple in their sinking sailboat had found it. It's last transmission was that it had come into contact with a commercial fishing trawler out of Japan entering US waters. When the Trawler didn't respond to radio contact, the cutter engaged. But since that was the last transmission and it had ended in death, they're thinking they were surprised, outnumber and everyone on board the cutter died.
No survivors this meant they couldn't afford to leave witnesses.
This meant organized crime was most likely what they were looking at.
What was worse was that the slugs matched a Yakuza family they all knew very well. Fucking Shioma.
So. From what Steve knew, after Shioma and Sam Alexander had taken Rowan the woman had been in the wind.
He also knew that Rowan had void intel on her, which was apparently a location. A location she shared with her brothers, but not him. Because, unlike her brothers, she couldn't trust him to not act on the void intel she had.
Now Jerry had managed to track this suspicious trawler to a spot, five miles south of Polihua beach on Lanai.
So look at that. He had the location too.
The place was supposed to be abandoned. A good place to hide an operation in the jungle. The assumption was that se was running her drug operation right under their noses.
Now, the last time they came across Shioma she had plants in HPD. Spies that told her their moves and if they were coming. Steve still wasn't sure if he had gotten all her spies, he wasn't sure if there were now new ones. So that meant, if he was taking his team in hot, they were going to have to keep this on the Downlow.
So. he was very surprised when his wife sauntered into the Palace, hands in the air singing: "We're gonna kill Shioma," over and over on repeat.
He had his usual silent questions? Like what was she doing there? How did she know about Shimoa? But he had let that all of that go because he knew the answer. The fucking void had given her information late again.
This left Steve with being only half surprised that she had shown up just as he had found out. Only half because he figured that the void was responsible for her appearance too.
"Why are you here?" Steve cried. "I thought you said you were out with your brothers today!"
Rowan said nothing, she just kept singing and dancing in front of him while he glared down on her. Eventually she gestured to something behind him and when he turned both Wo Fat and Con were at the armoury setting out weapons and what not. Not even paying attention to him at all.
He hadn't even seen them come in and they hadn't walked in with her either.
"What the actual fuck?"
"You heard her," Con said as he looked down the scope of a sniper rifle. "We're gonna kill Shioma."
"Look, there's no guarantee it was her. Besides, If Shioma was on this island I'd know."
"You didn't even know when I was on the island," Wo snapped back and Steve turned to Rowan.
Rowan took in his angry glare and just shrugged. "He's got a point."
God, he hated that she never backed him up, especially with her brothers.
"How did you even get them past security?"
Rowan said nothing she just made the throwing motion with her hands and he knew exactly how they got up there.
"Who's office? Not mine. You better not have fried my office," he warned but she shook her head.
"I threw them into Grover's he's off to Chicago today. Gives us time to get anything fried fixed."
Smart girl.
Except how would he explain why he needed to replace all of Grover's electronics? Yeah, didn't think about that did yah, Rowan?
"Look, thank you for bringing them here, but firstly I know they have their own gear so they need to get their paws off our shit, and secondly none of you are coming with us."
"Like fucking hell we aren't," Con cried tossing the sniper to table like he was about to get in Steve's face. Wo Fat had looked up at this point but all he had to do was put a hand out and Con stilled but that glare was pointed right at him.
"I'm not sure why you get first dibs on her. Our bad blood with Shioma is a little more deeply routed than yours."
Steve turned to Wo. "How do you fucking figure?"
"She's made moves on Ro twice now. The second time sealed her death sentence. Both Con and I have been waiting to get this chance to go after her for more than a year, and we're not missing it now it's here because you think you got dibs," he said going back to fixing that gun. Damn he was very fascinated in that gun. "So, we can go with you or we can be against you, which would you rather?"
"Against us? We're after the same person, how would you be against us?" Wo just glared at him and Steve sighed. "Fine. Fine, whatever. But stop hogging all our stuff, and let go of my SMG, get a different one."
"It doesn't have your name on it," Wo snapped, but let Steve tug it out of his hands.
"Whoa, wait a second, where are you going?" Rowan asked. Then before Steve could say anything she said: "No. The doctor said light duties! And don't you fucking think that we won't be talking about how you were never officially approved for field work when this is all over."
"Danny!" Steve snapped but Danny just spread his hands out in that universal "what gives" motion.
"Not Danny. Dr. Kohashi. He called me, gave me an update."
That fucking snitch. He really did just tell her everything. Damn, he was not on his side, which was stupid because Dr. Kohashi was his doctor not hers.
"Yeah, don't worry McGarrett. You go back to bed rest, let the rest of the men deal with this," Con said. Kono raised a hand but before she could interject, he said: "You're included in the men. Should have said badasses, but I was going for emotional damage."
Kono immediately lowered her hand and shrugged. "I'm perfectly fine with that."
Steve glanced to Rowan who was nodding like she agreed too, realized she wasn't going to be of any help and then turned to the only person he figured he could get help from.
"Wo!" he growled and the man looked up from the SMG he was loading and to him.
"What?" he asked clearly not getting what Steve was asking for. Which was fair, he hadn't actually asked for something and he was pretty sure neither of them would have ever thought that he'd be asking Wo Fat to back him up on anything.
"Back me up here…"
"With what?" he asked. "You coming with us?" Steve nodded and the man's eyes narrowed in confusion. "And you're asking me? Me?"
"Wo!" he growled again and the man sighed.
"Steven, if your doctor said you should be on light duties why would you be coming on this sort of recon mission? Do you not want to get better?" he asked and Steve groaned why the hell did he think that man would ever side with him. "Do you think your doctor's medical opinion isn't sound? Would you like a second opinion? I'm sure Jian wouldn't mind looking you over…"
Steve sighed heavily and then turned back to his wife. "Look, I am in charge of this team, I am going."
"Well, why did you ask me if you were just going to ignore me?" Wo said but Steve just ignored him.
Rowan put her hands on her hips. "Okay, well if you're going then I'm going. I'm the one with all the information in my head, but also cause someone needs to make sure that you're doing light duties."
And right away both Steve, Wo and Con were all throwing complaints at her.
"Ro, you're right, you have all the information, but you can give it to us," Wo said, he came to stand beside Steve and offered a hand to her. "We both know if you're there, both Con and I will be worried," Oh and Steve wouldn't be? "Which means we won't be paying attention to taking care of ourselves. And I'd like, very much, to not have to deal with some sort of void activity. Especially if we are coming across Shioma like you say we will. She's a very formidable foe, and she knows you're my weakness, and Steve's. Which means she'll go for you the second she knows you're there."
Wo was making all rational arguments. The sort of arguments Steve made, Rowan just never listened to him.
"Can you do this for me? Can you stay behind just once, so I don't have to worry?"
"Also I unno if the helicopter can hold all of us," Con added and Rowan rolled her eyes. She glanced between the two of them, her eyes narrowed and Steve swore he felt a crackled of void energy before she threw her head back with a groan.
"Fine!" she said folding her arms over her chest. "This is totally sexist, and mean but I'll stay behind."
Holy shit. That had worked?
"Wait a second… are you shitting me right now?" Steve asked. "I have used all of those arguments verbatim and you've ignored me. But you'll listen to him?"
"Yeah."
"What… why?"
"I unno, cause he doesn't lie to me."
"Then what was the Year of fucking Deceit, Rowan?"
"What she means if is, if me and Con get into trouble, we'll call her and she knows that. You run head long into danger and don't," he said. "Case in point, a doctor has told you to refrain from heavy exercise but you're going to an island where you will most likely get shot at."
For a moment Steve glared at him. "You know… I don't have to take you with me."
"We didn't want to go with you in the first place," Con snapped. "We wanted her to throw us right to her the second she got the void's green light to go after the bitch."
Wo nodded. "It's true. We're here at her insistence, but if you'd like to leave us behind be our guest. Just means that Ro will have to throw us there before you, and if we're going to go for full blown massacre with only two people I'll be forced to take her with me for the tactical advantage…"
"Fuck you," Steve snapped. "Fucking suit up. I'm going to find you guys badges so security doesn't freak out when they see you."
God he hated his family some time. But at least Ro had agreed to stay out of this one.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve had personally seen Rowan home. And by personally he had seen her through the portal and back to their house.
Then his rather large team of six were heading to Kamekona to borrow is helicopter again. As per usual Kamekona tried to bargain in food.
All Wo Fat had to say was: "Excuse me?" and he changed his mind. Like completely 180. He let them take the helicopter for free, even though Wo Fat offered him money.
Still they all agreed to buy something when they got back, for the first time Kamekona didn't want it. It was actually very interesting. It made him want Wo Fat around more often because people just agreed to things when he asked, not just Rowan but like… everyone.
You know, until Con said they should let Wo drive because Steve always drives. Steve had immediately shot back that the last time Wo had been at the helm of a helicopter it had gone down in flames. Both brothers punched him for that comment. Two not-so-lighthearted cuffs to his shoulders.
Then they were in the air. Steve was explaining what the plan was for the millionth time. Starting with how he was going to put them four klicks down from the location they saw on the satellite image that Rowan had confirmed was the right place.
Danny made a snappy comment about how no one understood him when he said things like Klicks. And Both Wo and Con explained what they were. That Klicks stood for kilometer, and each one was .62 miles. They said it in a way that conveyed they were very concerned that Danny didn't know that.
It also shut Danny right up.
They landed right where Steve said they would land and then they were hiking. Now normally Steve had to deal with Danny's bitching. And Danny had a lot of material. He hated hiking, he hated Steve's plans, like all the time, and he really hated that they had come here without telling HPD.
He couldn't in good conscience tell HPD when the last time they dealt with Shioma she had spies in HPD feeding her team information.
But it wasn't Danny who was bitching.
"I hate the jungle," Wo Fat snapped, slapping his neck. He then turned to Chin. "Do you have bug spray?"
Chin immediately grabbed the can he always carried with him now and handed to him. Wo Fat went about covering himself in it and then when Con wasn't paying attention he sprayed him too.
Rowan was right, when it came to her and Con, Wo Fat really was like the worried and over protective older sibling. Though he was more mature, like a dad figure both really, really needed.
"You spent like half your career in the jungle," Steve reminded him. "Half the time I came across you was in a fucking Jungle. Half the Year of Deceit was in the jungle."
"Yes. And I hated it," Wo snapped. "And it wasn't half the year, it was like a third. And it was necessary, we were coming at Diego hard and I wanted Ro somewhere where they would see him coming. And we had a beautiful fucking compound. I had a car to go back and forth, none of this hiking bullshit…"
"Well I thought it was great. I love nature and hiking," Con said taking a deep breath. "It's beautiful out here, innit."
"I swear to god, if I get bit one more time, I'mma light this shit on fire," Wo Fat growled trying to wave away probably mosquitos.
"How was uh… how was your Brothers Day with Ro… you know before it got interrupted?" Steve asked figuring that was a safe topic and if he was lucky Wo wouldn't lie about the three of them getting into some illegal activity.
Since he felt like bitching maybe he'd bitch about Ro and Con getting them into bullshit.
"Uh… well… it was good. We agreed to three activities. A Wo activity, a Con activity and a Ro activity," Wo said.
"Who's did you do first?"
"Ros, because it was time sensitive."
Steve knew right away what they had done so he chimed in with Wo and Con as they said: "Afternoon tea."
"Next was supposed to be a shooting range for Con, and the last was going to be a fancy whiskey bar, they're offering a special tasting night that I'm probably going to miss out on now. There was also going to be a golfing so I could finally witness that hole in one trick…" "—Still not sure that it actually is a thing though," Con interrupted.
"Oh it's a thing," Danny said. "Believe me. It's a very freaky thing."
"Well, we're not going to be able to see that either today I'm afraid," Wo said with a sigh. "No, gotta spend my day in the fucking jungle."
"It's not that bad," Con said with a smile but Wo just glared at him.
They walked a little further into the jungle in silence and then they all came to a stand still. Or at least, Steve, Danny, Chin and Kono did.
Wo and Con looked up to those rotting dangling corpses up in the trees above them and then just kept on walking, like the sight hadn't freaked them out or was anything much to worry about.
"Seriously?" Danny called after them and both of them turned back.
"What?" Wo asked. "They're just bodies."
"So? You're not interested in how they got up there?"
Wo and Con exchanged glances and then looked up at the bodies. "Well, I doubt the Nightmarchers did it," Wo said. "Obviously people did."
"Whoa, wait what are Nightmarchers?"
"Sprits of Hawaiian warriors. They protect things that are Kapu," Wo said and Steve found himself surprised by this. He wouldn't have thought Wo had learned the heritage of this place. It sort of made him wonder why he had. Wo Fat did things that benefited him, mostly Rowan was his exception, so what did he get from learning the heritage and legends of Hawaii? "If you break the spiritual laws of Kapu they come and find you and kill you. Some say they melt your face off. They're legends, of course but the natives swear they're a thing."
Con came from a superstitious culture. He wasn't sure how ingrained he was in the culture, how much of it he took seriously, but it was clear by the look on his face that he was freaking out.
"I just said it wasn't them," Wo said when Con's panic became clear to him. Not going to lie it took him a while to notice. "It was clearly humans. We're nearing the camp and these are wards. Warnings. Most likely for the people that still fucking working here or maybe to scare off natives or any hikers. I'm guessing for the people who work here because it makes more sense."
"It looks like someone gutted these guys and then just left them to die," Chin said. "Why would they do something like this?"
Steve had taken out his phone to take pictures of the bodies to send to Noelani so she could give them more info on them.
"Well… could be for any number of reasons. Could have been a change over of hands and they massacred the previous owners of this particular establishment. They could have fucked up and this was their last chance. They could be wards, killed to set an example. They could be traitors…"
"Are you just listing reasons for why you've done something like this before?" Kono asked and Wo basically nodded.
"I mean, I don't usually go around gutting and hanging people. I prefer bullets, but back in the day when I had a little more patience, yeah, I did stuff like this."
"Yeah, same, sends a good message," Con said while the others just stared at them in complete and utter shock. "Though I prefer a hole. You know? Dig a hole. Execute people in front of it. Put the body with the others in the hole. It's great for shock value, keeps people in line, and really torments people before you end them. So win-win-win situation."
See, Steve's friends had the same problem that Steve had. He was constantly forgetting who Wo and Con really were and what they were capable of. Then they'd get their reminders and be horrified again.
Firstly, by what they were willing to do and secondly by how they were still interacting with them.
Steve sent his pictures off with Noelani so she could tell them more. She probably couldn't go into full detail, but she could give him some at least. He was just about to turn around and tell his team what he thought the next move would be when three smoke grenades bounced into their group and just by their feet.
"Cover!" Steve yelled and everyone dive away from the smoke grenades.
When they look up they're surrounded by men with guns.
"Uh… Wo… did she warn you about this?" Steve heard Con asked.
"Uh… no. This did not come up," Wo said.
"Any chance she's punishing us for not bringing her along?"
"Uh… yeah. Probably."
"Well… fuck."
Yeah. Steve found himself thinking. Yeah, that pretty much summed up how he felt.
