A/N: HAPPY BIRTHDAY REWRITE! That's right! As of Monday this story was officially 3 years old! Isn't that AMAZING? To celebrate this year I put out a new Stringaverse story. My Girl went up on Monday (Rewrite's actual birthday) and is about how this story would have gone down if Wo Fat had adopted Rowan as a child. So check it out! As for this update, we have another cute little chapter. This is the chapter with most of the drama in it and since it's heavy on the action this chapter is a little shorter. Don't forget to leave a review, tell me what you think, and don't forget to check out the new story and I'll see you guys next week!
Chapter 390
Moani had called Kono that morning and Kono, who had let the trafficking case that led to her saving Moani haunt her since they had crossed it, immediately jumped into action. Kono had dropped hanging out with her favourite niece to go and see Moani and it had paid off.
Moani was haunted too, by what happened to her, and she wanted to help. So she had drawn up a picture of a man who drove the truck that transported her and the other girls around the island.
She had given Kono the picture and a name. Moani knew him as Devon, and that was all they needed actually because with that picture and the name they got a match.
Devon Miller had been arrested for assault though the charges were dropped. It meant, however, that he was in the system and that was how they found him. They figured out that he owned a private independent trucking company and he lived in the giant house on the beach that was very remote and only had one road in and out of the place. Other words it was the perfect place to hide a bunch of girls they were sex trafficking.
However, when they raided Devon's house everyone was gone. Like picked up and left in a hurry, they hadn't even turned the coffee pot off, it was still set on it's timer. That meant they knew Five-0 was coming.
Now how would they have known that?
It took some searching but they figured out that he was actually on the move. They pinged his phone and found that he was in one of his company's semi-trucks and the girls were no doubt in the back.
Steve had HPD put up a barricade to stop him, but that hadn't stopped him at all. In fact, he blew through the barricade, almost ran poor Abby over. After that Steve had taken the Camaro and caught up to him, had Jerry put him through to his phone and had a little chat with Devon.
Okay, lies, he had threatened him.
Devon was pretty clear, if HPD continued this chase he'd drive the semi-truck over a cliff.
Yeah, Steve couldn't let that happen.
So he pulled back, had told HPD on keep on his tail and then he pulled Five-0 back to the Palace. This was because they needed to come up with a plan, something to stop this in some way where the girls didn't get hurt.
But no one had anything so Steve talked them through the only plan they had, the only one that he could think of on such a short notice. A very stupid plan that no one on his team liked. But the only other plan they came up with was Rowan throwing him into a moving vehicle.
That couldn't be done because there'd be people inside and how was he to explain that to them? And because Rowan was admittedly only good at throwing to stationary objects, she hadn't quite gotten the handle of moving things, unless she was catching them in the void, and that was not what they were doing.
So that's where he was now. Climbing up the mountain side so he could get to the top of the Tetsuo Harano Tunnels. Thanks to Lou they had basically forced Devon to take the right exit and he was now heading for the tunnels.
All he had to do was jump, land on the back of the truck and then get inside. See. Easy.
Then Five-0 would have to do their part to help him get the girls out of the trailer. Secrecy was of the utmost importance and so far, part one of the plan had worked.
Steve was cresting the top of that hill and he was out of breath and trying to cover it, but he figured he needed to check in with the team so they knew how he was doing on his part two of the plan.
"Okay Jerry. As soon as he comes out of that tunnel, jam his cell signal, alright? If he's live-streaming news, I don't want him seeing any of this."
Copy that. Air support is moving into position now.
Great and so was Steve. He was almost done with the jungle bit and onto the part where he was on the actual bridge and making his way to the spot he'd be jumping down from.
He had sent Rowan a few texts but she hadn't gotten back to him yet. She must have been having one hell of a fun day with Wo Fat. God, he hoped his last correspondence with her wasn't just a few unanswered texts about nothing and him asking her to call when she got a chance.
He couldn't help but be worried about this one, there was such a large margin for error. Yes it was his plan but it could still kill him.
"Steve, I have something to say," Danny said cutting into his quiet time.
Danny was waiting in a separate location away from the drop zone. They had the specially rigged truck ready for the maneuver which was part 4 of the plan. Danny was going to get to drive for once, but that had not calm him down.
"Again?" Steve snapped.
He didn't want to hear what Danny had to say. The man just wouldn't stop bitching. He hated the plan, he was convinced that Steve was going to get himself killed and he had been trying to talk him out of it.
It hadn't worked, but he was clearly going to try again.
"Yes, again. Okay? Nobody ever listens to me. If you wanna die today, that's what you wanna do, I'm fine with it."
Also, a lie because Danny would have to tell Rowan if this plan killed him and Steve already knew that Danny didn't want to tell Rowan that he had let Steve do this.
"Look, it can't be that bad," Steve said. "Whenever I do something too stupid, Rowan shows up and either stops me or helps me out."
He was thinking mostly about that jump he would have made when he was chasing the parkour idiot working for Madison Grey earlier that year. Rowan had intervened then and he figured she'd do it again this time.
"You cannot keep relying on your wife and her fucking powers to save you when you do stupid shit," Danny cried.
"Can't you just say good luck?" Steve asked.
"No. I can't say good luck because the only way that luck plays a part in any of this is if you end up paralyzed instead of dead."
"I appreciate the encouragement, Danny."
Be advised. The suspect is now less than a mile out.
Steve could almost hear Danny biting back a curse. Steve was starting to get nervous too. This was a pretty stupid move on his part, he was about 95% certain he could do this but that didn't mean there wasn't a 5% chance that he'd miss that truck and kill himself.
Steve glanced down to the road below him and the panic began to creep up on him. This was a crazy idea, and there was such a small margin for error. Literally if he was off by even a second he'd be flat on the goddamn road with both his legs broken at the very best or at worst his spine.
He wanted to hear from Rowan, he wanted her to tell him it was going to be okay but if she knew what he was doing she'd be bitching more than Danny was.
But he wanted to talk to someone, and all he had left was Danny.
"Chef's hat," he blurted out.
"Excuse me?" came from Danny.
"The gift. It's a chef's hat with your name on it. Rowan came up with the hat, Nahele came up with putting your name on it. And if I'm being honest, Rowan found the place to order it from but I made her think it was a stupid idea so she wouldn't order it so I could."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Well… you know, I just thought you could use it for Steve's."
"Alright. We've talked about this. Rowan has told you this. Under no circumstances is my restaurant going to be named Steve's and you're gonna know that cause you're going to be there cause you're not going to die. Just don't… you're not gonna… no dying today. Okay? Cause I'm not telling Rowan that happened. I'm not."
"You… I thought you said…"
"I know what I said," Danny snapped "And I said it because I'm trying to talk you out of it. Obviously it's not gonna work, okay? So…"
Alright the suspect is now in the tunnel. Jerry said, interrupting their heart felt conversation. At his current rate of speed. He'll be out the other side in less than 30 seconds.
What Steve said was: "Copy that," but instead he was freaking out.
God this was stupid. So stupid. He had a wife and kid and he was going to jump off a bridge and onto a moving truck.
After he promised her, he'd be more careful.
If he survived this, she was going to kill him.
He finally got the good luck from Danny too.
Jerry counted down. Steve struggled to reel his heart rate back in. He briefly checked his phone, still nothing from Rowan, then Jerry got to one and Steve jumped.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Well, Steve had survived the jump.
He landed on the truck alright, he didn't stay on his feet, but instead rolled back, but he didn't roll right off. So that was the step two of the plan successful completed.
The cell signal had been jammed, Steve got that lazer started and was cutting into the top of the trailer when he suddenly flew back and off of the truck. Yeah, that was cause there was a hostile inside shooting.
Danny was certain he was going to watch his best friend fall off this damn truck and get hit by an HPD squad car that couldn't swerve at time, or at the very least break everything hitting the asphalt at that speed. But Steve managed to pull himself up and then he just disappeared into the trailer.
Danny got their own truck in position.
Their truck was specially rigged with a platform jutting over the hood. Chin was on that metal platform as he would be the one to grab the girls out of the truck and help them down to the truck bed where Kono and Abby were waiting to help them.
Problem was, Steven didn't open the door like he was supposed to.
"Alright Steve, we're in position," Danny said but Steve didn't respond.
"We've got a bogey on our left," Duke interjected and when Danny checked in his side mirror, he could see a little black car coming up on their left.
"Who the fuck is this asshole?"
The little black Audi sped past them, cutting in front of their specially rigged truck with the drop top coming down. Why was Danny surprised to see Rowan's brown hair and signature cat shaped glasses? What was worse was the man who stood up in the passenger seat, who too looked quite familiar. He had one foot braced on the dash board and a grappling hook looking gun in his hand.
Rowan had brought in Wo Fat.
God, that couldn't be good. What did she think they needed him for?
Still Danny watched as Wo Fat shot the grappling hook into the metal of the truck, hopped over the windshield and just jumped from the Audi to the truck.
Just like Steve he was hanging over the edge, but he pulled himself up much easier then Steven had, and the just like Steve he jumped down into that truck.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
It had been a long time since Wo Fat had done something like this. And honestly, it was quite the rush.
Wo Fat had pulled him self up onto that truck with ease, found the hole in the top just where Rowan said it would be and then jumped down and into the darkness. He landed in what Rowan called a super hero pose, he had never believed that to be an accurate description because he had always been a bag guy but now it felt pretty accurate. And he liked it too.
He heard yelps and looked up. Right, there were the girls. He then turned and found who he was looking for.
Steve was right where Rowan said he'd be, in a chokehold. He couldn't shoot the guy either, Steve's stupid face in the way.
So Wo Fat tackled them. He slammed both Steve and the bad guy into the opposite wall. The guy was smart of to realize that Wo Fat was the now the bigger threat so he dropped his hold on his Steve and raised his hands to fight him.
The first hook Wo Fat landed got those hands back down. The second hit was a kick, roundhouse, right to that man's stupid face. Hitting him so hard he spun and slammed face first into the wall beside him.
Steve was finally up, standing beside Wo Fat ready for whatever else this man had to bring, except he was currently down for the count. Wo Fat only had to look at him and then gesture to the lever to open the door and Steve moved forward to do it. As the door flew up Wo Fat stooped down picked up the bad guy and then threw him, straight out and onto the road.
Wo Fat saw the second Steve realized that Rowan was there with them but he gratefully didn't say anything. Rowan was pulling back and away, tucking the Audi he had rented for this very purpose behind a cop car, while the other Five-0s pulled their specially outfitted truck up to the trailer.
"Come on, girls," Steve said clapping his hands. "We gotta get off this truck."
But all of them huddled away from them, clearly too afraid to move. Yeah, Wo Fat didn't have time for this. He stalked over to the group, picked one girl, grabbed her and fairly dragged her to the edge.
"Calm down," he said. "We're not going to let you fall. We're all going to get out of this alive."
He was using the tone of voice that calmed Rowan down, except it didn't seem to calm any of them down.
It didn't work on Jian or Con either, maybe Rowan was on a different frequency.
Both Steve and Wo held onto the girl as the helped her climb up onto the structure. Danny, how was driving, kept getting closer and then falling back, god they should have had Rowan driving, she would have been tailgating no problem.
Guys be advised he's nearing the naval base, the helicopters can't follow into restricted airbase we're going to lose the signal jammer.
Steve swore. "Come on girls, we gotta move faster." He then turned onto Wo Fat. "Tell Sandy to shut his signal down."
Wo Fat's face didn't change, except for a slight furrow in his eyebrows. It was the closest to a wince the man would show in front of Steven.
He took a very deep breath before saying: "I can't."
"What? Why not?" Steve cried. But when Wo Fat didn't answer quick enough Steve pulled out his own phone. "Sandy, shut down this guy's phone."
Except Sandy didn't boot up. Steve turned to Wo Fat who was now actually wincing.
"She's uh… she's down right now."
"What? Why? What happened?"
"Nothing… I just… I had to take her down."
"What? Why?"
"Because I did!" Wo Fat shouted back.
They must have hit the restricted airspace because the truck they were in suddenly sped up. The girl on the rig hadn't been ready, she lost balance and if it weren't for Chin grabbing her, she might have fallen.
Right away Rowan and the little convertible swung into the space between the truck and the car, putting her bumper under the girl in case she fell.
Once the girl was safely on the rig Rowan sped up, going god knows how fast to keep up with them.
Wo Fat looked around, then looked down to Rowan in the New Audi he just rented and sighed. He gave her the signal. The single finger circling, a motion she knew off by heart. Rowan gave him a quick nod gestured to the right, the way she would go, before turning her attention to the road.
Together Wo Fat and Steve shut the door. "What was that?" he asked him.
"Get everyone into the corner and brace for impact," Wo Fat ordered.
"What?"
"Just come on, ladies, back right corner," he said herding them into the corner. "It's okay. Steven come here."
Steve joined him, bracing himself on the wall just like Wo Fat. Caging the girls between their chests.
"Right, now hold onto either me and Steve. The truck is most likely going to flip, and when it does it's going to be scary, so just hold onto us and try to be loosey-goosey."
Steve turned to him, the whole point of coming into the truck was so it didn't flip, but it looks like he didn't have a choice now.
"It's going to be okay," Steve said to the girls, so they wouldn't worry as much.
Just as the crash was heard and the trailer began to tip.
