Chapter 391
The truck, and the trailer attached to it hit the ground and with the combination of Steve and Wo Fat braced over the girls no one had really gotten hurt.
It mustn't have been a full tip, because they were on an angle. They must have hit a hill or something, which was great for them. Meant they didn't have far to fall.
They had to wait until everything finally stopped moving before they dared to try and move. Wo Fat had basically crashed into him, had landed on top of him and everything. The girls were all in a pile together too, and though he heard groans everyone seemed okay.
Wo Fat groaned loudly and rolled off and away from him, and Steve decided to ignore him. Or at the very least let him go and then check on him later. He figured if the man was actually injured, he'd hear about it. Or Rowan would pop in freaking out.
"Everyone good?" Steve asked as he helped the girls up. girls all nodded, they were a little banged up but they looked okay. "Wo, you're included in everyone, you good or not?"
"Yeah, I'm good," he said. "Think I hit your head on impact. Hard as a fucking rock, I think I have a concussion."
Steve scowled at him though he covertly looked him over, no bleeding he didn't seem dizzy either.
"You're fine."
Behind them the door flew open and then sun tried to illuminate the space, though all it really did was blind them.
But Steve didn't have to see to know who was standing there.
"Steve… Steve…"
"Hey!" he said getting up and moving towards the back of the trunk where Danny's profile was illuminated by the light. "Who do you have with you?"
"Kono… Steve you need…"
"Okay girls, let's go, out of the truck," Steve said ushering them towards Danny and Kono. "Hey… what uh… what happened to Devon?"
"He climbed out, pulled a gun, and Kono shot him like six times," Danny said though he was clearly agitated about something. "But Steve…"
"Well, that's good, that's he's gone," he said. "I'm fine by the way… so are the girls and Wo. Thanks for asking."
"Steve," Danny said again.
"What, what's your damage? It worked, didn't it? I got the girls, I didn't fall to my death…"
"Yeah, that's not the problem."
"Then what's the problem?" Steve asked.
Wo Fat just breezed on past him. "See that wasn't so bad," he said. "Now… where's my sister…"
Steve ignored him, helping the girls down while watching Wo Fat put as much distance between Steve and Danny, probably looking for someone, probably Rowan.
"She did that donut thing she does, the drifty thing, she did it in front of the truck… it clipped…"
But Danny didn't get to finish. Wo Fat sudden let out this primal scream of Rowan's name and took off. Steve practically shoved Danny off of him to follow him.
He wasn't expecting to see that little convertible Rowan had been driving, upside down across the road. He sprinted to the car, to where Wo Fat was already on the ground trying to see inside. He had an arm wedged in as if reaching for her, probably to confirm that she was there and alive.
"I can't feel anything," he said. When he retracted the arm and it came out lacerated but he didn't seem to care. "I'll push, tell me if you see her inside."
They switched places, and together, with Kono, Chin, Danny, Grover and Abby they pushed against the car trying to see under it.
They were struggling, struggling to push it and hold it up.
"Do you see her?" Wo Fat ask as Steve struggled to look under but he saw nothing but shadows.
"I can't see anything push harder!"
"Is someone stuck under the car?"
Both Wo Fat and Steve stopped what they were doing and turned around. Rowan stood there just a few paces away, blood leaking from the center of her head as she stared at them with blank blue eyes.
"Is someone stuck under the car?" she asked again. "Who is it? Do I need to…"
In a flurry both men and scrambled to her. Since Steve was on the ground at the time, Wo Fat got to her quicker, enveloping her in this giant hug before pushing her away to take stock of the damage to her face. By then Steve was up and needing her in his arms, he tried to shove Wo Fat away so he could get to her, but that devolved into them both slapping their hands against one another's hands in some strange slap fight of sorts. Finally Steve threw Wo Fat's hands away and pulled her in for a tight hug.
"Are you okay? Are you okay?"
She obviously wasn't. She had hit her head again. But he needed to hear that, otherwise she was fine.
"Here, look, twizzlers," Wo Fat said shoving a pull-n-peel twizzler into Rowan's face. Immediately she was out of Steve's arms with an excited ohhh and Steve could see that, well, she had really hit her head.
Wo Fat was stooping down to look at her, clearly trying to assess her without freaking her out. "So uh… what happened?"
Rowan looked up and blinked her eyes. "What do you mean?"
"After I shut the door, what happened?"
"Oh I did the round-a-bout, like you asked," she answered "But uh… it was too tight of a turn so I got clipped coming around… so I guess it popped my car into the air."
Why was she saying that so nonchalantly?
"But you weren't in the car when it hit…" "The ground? No. I had jumped by then."
"You didn't jump right, did you?" Wo Fat asked, untucking his shirt from his designer jeans and ripping a strip of it off so he could press it to her face.
"No, it was all dizzy and twisted and when I came out I hit a tree," she said through a mouthful of twizzler. She then pointed up the hill, just above tipped over truck, to a little grove of palm trees. "Came out right up there… I'm bleeding, aren't I?"
"Yep, but it's okay. It's okay cause me and Steve are here and we got this," Wo Fat said shooting a glare at Steve. "Right? We got this?"
"Yeah, no, we got this. Why don't you come here babe, you can lean on me, sound good?"
Rowan nodded, not bothering to take a step forward, just leaning then and there, Steve had to lurch forward to keep her from falling over. She landed happily on his chest and then sighed like she was content.
"That guy. The one you threw. Was I right? Was he choking him?"
Wo Fat shot a glance at Steve. He had been strangling him actually. Had Wo Fat not shown up when he did, Steve might not have got the upper hand.
"Nope, not at all. Steve barely needed me. Sort of got in his way actually."
Steve mouthed thank you to Wo Fat over her head which won him half a shrug. He wasn't sure why Wo Fat covered for him, but he figured it had something to do with Rowan's current state and not distressing her further.
"I love it when my boys work together," she said dreamily. "I wish you could do that all the time."
And then she promptly went limp in Steve's arms.

Con came back from his latest job, knowing he was going to have to pack and go.
The cops were already moving to find him, though they'd take a while. No, it was the rival political candidate that was the problem.
He hadn't wanted to pay him, so Con had forced him to. Rather violently. It was his people that were going to be coming after him, and he didn't want to deal with it.
Like, call his sister to pull him kind of not deal with it.
He got part way through packing when there was a pop and someone crashed into his bed.
He turned, gun drawn and pointed at the person who had bounced off the bed and landed on the floor, but it was just Wo Fat.
"Jesus… am I in more trouble than I thought?" he asked as he holster the weapon and Wo Fat groaned from the floor. "And what happened to your arm?"
Wo Fat glanced to the arm that was wrapped with gauze. "I cut it," he said and then offered his hand to Con. "Help me up."
Con took the hand and pulled the man to his feet. "What's that matter old man, have you fallen and can't get up?"
Wo Fat scowled at him. "I've had a hard day, okay?"
A little bit of worry ran through him and he instinctively looked up all over to see if there was anything else on him that might have been injured, or if there was another injury he might have been hiding.
When he figured Wo fine, he asked: "Whatcha doing here?"
"I came to see you," he said.
"She threw you though… and not well…" he trailed off and then turned to him. "Is she concussed again?"
It was the most logical assumption after all. If he wasn't in any real danger there was no reason for Rowan to throw him. Especially since Wo Fat didn't like to be thrown, he liked portals. So if she threw him for no reason, it meant she wasn't thinking straight. She was either mad at him and punishing him or she was concussed and hadn't thought the request through.
If she was mad at him Con would have known by now. Wo Fat would have been more upset about the throw. Especially since he bounced off of Con's bed because of it.
So yeah. Concussion was the only logical assumption.
"Yeah, but it's minor," Wo said trying to wave it off. "McGarrett's got her, she's good."
But that did not make him feel better. It felt like every time he left the island something happened to his girl.
Why the hell couldn't McGarrett manage her? It wasn't that fucking hard.
"Aw come on, what happened this time?"
"She crashed another one of my Audis," he said as if that didn't raise more questions. "Can I talk to you about to something?"
"Yeah, why don't you tell me what the fuck happened? Or why the fuck you keep renting Audis when you have such bad luck with them?"
"Later, I need to talk to you about something that I'm uh… that I'm doing that might… effect you. No, if I'm going to be honest, I have a feeling it's probably going to massively effect you."
Con sighed. "What did you do?"
"I uhm… I'm going to be turning myself in."
Con's mouth dropped. "Wait… wait what?"
"I was supposed to be next week, but Ro made me privy to a… uh… an opportunity that I wouldn't absolutely hate so I'll be leaving tonight…"
"Hold on!" Con cried. "What do you mean you're turning yourself in? Turning yourself in to who? To go to jail? For how long? And how is Rowan okay with this?"
"I'm essentially going straight," he said and Con just stared at him mouth dropped open unsure he actually heard right. He let Con digest that before continuing. "I have a deal with the CIA where I work with them on various teams helping to shut down my routes and others, and in return… when they said I've done enough, they're going to let me go free, so I can uhm… I can retire…"
He was doing it so he and Jian could have a legitimate future.
But this would have long term effects on both Con and Rowan.
"Rowan's app…"
"Sanctuary is going to be modified to follow the Five-0s and their family, to be able to hack into places to help them…"
"And Kong… and Armando… and…"
"Armando already works for the CIA, he's their cocaine guy. He's fine. And they offered Kong a job as a team lead for their cyber division."
"Yeah and what about me? Huh?"
"Well… that's where the problem is…"
Dear god the man he saw as his brother was going to sell him out to the CIA. Why did that hurt so much? Why had he thought that this new family wouldn't betray him?
How had Rowan been okay with this?
"With me turning snitch I'm worried there's going to be some back lash on you."
At that Con paused. Cause that was not what he was expecting.
"Backlash? You mean… you mean from other underworld players?"
"Well yes, because well… it'd be hard to go after Rowan, her being tied to Five-0, but you're a freelance operator there's a chance someone might book you and then turn on you to get at me…"
Con blinked his eyes. That was what Wo was afraid of? Of the underworld turning on him? Really?
"What about the CIA?"
"What about them?"
"Well… I just… you… didn't they ask…?"
Wo got it right away. "Oh! That. Yes, well I was clear that I wasn't going to be turning on you, that you were not part of the deal," he said. "I did say that you might collaborate with me if I could talk you into that, but the choice was up to you. Needless to say, they were quite excited at the opportunity to work with you…" he took Con's stare and narrowed his eyes. "You didn't… I mean… you didn't really think I would turn on you… did you?"
"Well I mean… maybe…."
"Maybe? Con!" he cried. "I know we don't always get along but I'd never…"
Wo was cut off by Con's hug. He just grappled onto his older brother figure and hugged him tightly.
"Are… uh… are you okay?"
"I'd feel better if you hugged me back."
He almost felt Wo roll his eyes, but he did as asked and hugged him back. When he was done, Con just backed away, clearing his throat as he went.
"So uh… how did Ro take it?"
Wo Fat didn't need to ask for clarification. "Good."
"And when did you tell her?" he asked, expecting that she had been a part of this process from the very beginning.
"This morning. And I told Jian after."
"Oh shit," Con cried. "You kept this close to your chest, didn't you?"
"Yes… I didn't want to worry anyone until it was done deal," he said.
"And why was I last?"
"Because Ro wanted to go for lunch…" "—You couldn't have invited me?" "… no. And let me tell you why…" "—You have a weird thing about feeling like a third wheel?"
Wo Fat frowned at him. "Did she tell you that?"
"She may have mentioned it last time," he said with a shrug. "If it makes you feel better Steve feels like a total outsider when we're all together, or when it's just me and you."
"Well that's Steven, we don't care about him."
"That's what I said!"
The two men smiled and then Wo hesitantly pet him on the back three times. "So uh… I know you don't like change… but uh… this will be okay… it's uhm…"
"It's for you and Jian… I uh… I figured."
"Yeah," he said. "I'm thinking uhm… I'm thinking of marrying her…"
"Wow, really?" he asked. "Did you tell Ro?"
"Not yet, you know what she's like," he said and Con nodded.
"Yeah, she probably already knows, but she's not going to freak out about it until you tell her…"
"And she can't keep a secret from Steven, who won't keep it a secret from Williams who will tell everyone…"
The two of them shook their heads at them and then the door to the hotel room swung open and Rowan collapsed to the floor.
"Oh god, Rowan," Steve cried moving towards her just as they heard Nahele cry out for his mom too.
"I like the floor," Rowan was saying. "Floor feels floory."
"Oh shit! Yeah, she's definitely more than minorly concussed," Con said heading towards her. "How is she holding that portal open?"
"God knows," Wo said heading towards them. "I didn't text you to tell you I was ready."
"You're ready, I feel it," she grumbled, still face first in the carpet. "And it's open cause Steve is helping."
They glanced to Steve whose hands were on her back. "Can you guys hurry up, I don't know how long I can help her hold this."
"Yeah, just give me a sec, I should probably come with you."
"Why?" Wo asked, already stepping over Rowan to join Nahele in the kitchen. "Don't you have a job?"
"Yeah, but it's done," he said. "And besides, I should probably be here. You know, keep an eye on things."
Con turned to get the rest of his stuff packed and Wo Leant in the door way, no doubt using his own power to keep it open.
"I was going to ask you to maybe go to Japan…"
"Naw, Hawaiian base is better," he said throwing his bag over his shoulder. "Cause she can throw me to Japan at a drop of a hat."
"Should could pull you too…"
"Yeah but she gets the visions, not me…"
"Ooh… remind me to talk to you about that before I leave…"
"Why?" Steve asked immediately and Wo's eyes narrowed at him.
"She hasn't told you yet?"
"Well… I mean… I don't know? Probably!" he cried, pulling a groaning Rowan off of the floor she he could get them back to the Hawaiian side of portal. "But just in case, what are you talking about, so I'm sure I know?"
"Oh, if you knew, you'd know," he said. "I'm not going to tell you, you have to wait for her to."
"You're going to tell Con! Why can't you tell me!" Steve cried but Wo just shook his head.
They all got through the portal, which closed the second Steve walked through with Rowan. Then Con was going up the stairs to drop off all his stuff in her room as a party was going to be happening at the McGarrett's tonight, even though Ro was rather concussed.
Wo knew he'd only have a short amount of time before Ro would need to send him off to the Airport in Hawaii. She was nice enough to have already bought a ticket, right beside his soon to be new partner.
It wasn't going to be ideal, but it was better than his other options. He just had to hope it worked out for him.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
The party went on, just as expected.
After Rowan had thrown Wo Fat to Japan, with the promise of bringing him back for the party, she had gone to sleep. When she woke up, she found that Steve, Nahele and Con got everything set up and while some things were not the way she would have done it, it was good enough in her eyes.
Nahele stuck to Rowan like glue. This head injury worried him, the fact that she had to be hospitalized also worried him.
Her only response had been to say: "Well at least I wasn't kidnapped," and while she had them all there, a head injury was not much of an improvement.
By the time everyone else had arrived, Con had joined in on the sticking to Rowan like glue. And she was annoyed, Steve could tell, hell everyone could tell.
This party was for Jerry, so there was a banner and a big picture of him. They were celebrating him getting the badge and as usually Kamekona and Flipper had provided the food, and a chicken option for Rowan.
Flipper was on the Ukelele and belting out a tune that Jerry was jamming to. Danny had opened his chef's hat and happily put it on. He then thanked Rowan and Nahele for coming up with the idea.
All of their friends were there, except for Kono who was late.
Danny's issue was that Charlie needed to go and there was no washroom for him to use. So Danny had him outside of the washroom, the poor boy bouncing like his pants depended on it, cause they did, waiting for Steve to come out.
And my god was he taking his sweet time.
"Come on buddy," Danny called knocking on the door. "We got a bladder emergency here." He then turned to look at Charlie. "Keep bouncing, buddy. You'll be alright."
He knocked again, pairing it with a "Yo."
Steve coming out with a wince. "I'm sorry, Charlie boy. Come on," he said ushering him in.
"Hey, don't … uh… don't touch anything. Cause if you break something Auntie Ro will literally kill me. You gotta flush the toilet, wash your hands afterwards."
"He knows what to do Danny."
Danny looked Steve up and down. He was pale, sweating, he had the hand towel in his hands, and he kept swiping his mouth with it, which was odd. It didn't take much of Danny's detective skills to figure that something was wrong.
"What's the matter? You alright?"
Steve didn't like that question though because he immediately deflected.
"Nice hat."
Danny's eyes darted up the chefs hat on top of his head, knowing exactly why Steve had complimented the hat. And it wasn't going to work.
"Thanks, but you're not changing the topic," Danny snapped. "What's going on, you don't look good, what's going on?"
Steve blustered for a bit as he wiped his mouth with a hand towel once again. Solidifying the theory that he had probably been throwing up.
He clearly didn't want to talk to Danny about what was going on but he was caught and Danny wasn't going to let it go and they both knew it. Steve was going to have to confess, and he was trying to pick the right words.
"Right… so… I've been getting these spells."
"Spells?"
"Well, dizzy spells mostly. Uhm… some nausea," he admitted and a sort of sinking dread filled Danny's stomach. "Look, last month, I lied to you about going to the doctor, okay? I didn't go to the doctor about my liver. I just haven't been feeling so great, so he ran some tests last week."
And then he just left it there. Why the fuck would he leave it there?
"And?"
"And… I've had a little radiation poisoning from that dirty bomb that we defused a couple months ago. It's fine."
Fine? He had just used radiation poisoning and fine in the same fucking sentence. What a fucking neanderthal.
"But the pills you been seeing me taking, that's a short-term thing. It's gonna know it out."
"Short term," Danny echoed. "So, what, it… long term is there any… what? I mean, what is it?
"Come on, Danny. You asked ten of these guys, you're gonna get ten different opinions, right?"
Wrong. But Steve was trying to deflect, that's cause he got bad news. Danny was gonna have to be strong for his best friend.
"Right, well… what did this... did he say anything about long term or…?"
"He said he's almost 100 percent sure there's gonna be some side effect down the road. You know, but Danny, we're talking years down the road. Not today. I'm fine right now. This is nothing."
Danny silently took all of that in trying very hard not to panic.
"Does Ro know?" Danny asked, cause this was totally something that Steve would refuse to tell his wife.
"Does Ro know what?" she asked coming up the stairs and towards them. "Loving the hat. Did I have a good idea or what babe?"
Danny looked at her, watched as Steve pulled his wife to his side and just grinned down at her. That big giant gauze pad taped to her head looked ridiculous on it.
"Did he tell you he has radiation poisoning?"
"What? Steve? No! He doesn't… This is just like a stomach bug… or like… he broke your liver…" "—Why would you say that? I… I told him about it, babe." "… oh then yeah. I knew, I like hella knew. I'm the one who got him to go to the doctor for it."
Of course she knew. Of course she did. That was why she was making him lunches with double the ginger ales. Wow, he should have known something was going on. She never sent him with lunch before.
"But uh… Nahele doesn't know so maybe keep it to yourself, we're stressing him as is and Steve doesn't want to make it worse."
Right, and that was typical too. Keeping everyone in the dark about this.
"Alright, Miss. Strings," he said. "Long term. He's trying to play it down, right? What did the doc say? Lay it on me."
Rowan glanced to Steve and then back to Danny. "He's 100 percent going to develop leukemia in the next ten years. Both the Doctor and the strings says so."
Steve winced and Danny reeled back by that confession.
"100 percent" Danny echoed. "100 percent, Steve, and you're telling me it's fine."
"It is going to be fine. I got his survival rate under 50%."
"Yeah it's sitting at 49…"
"Actually I got it down to a nice and even 40."
Steve turned onto her. "Rowan! No! We agreed to… you weren't supposed to pull that much."
"I liked the 60 to 40 odds better," she said with a shrug. "And don't you take that tone with me, Mr. McGarrett. Not after the stunt you pulled today."
Oh here we go, now this Danny was okay with.
"Stunt… what are you…"
"You fucking jumped off a bridge today. What were you thinking? What if you missed?"
"Except I didn't…"
"No, but you know what you did do?"
"No, what?"
"You promised me that you'd take it easy…"
Steve groaned cutting her off. "I know, but it was the only way, and I figured if it was really dangerous, you'd show up and stop me and you didn't…"
"I didn't cause I fixed the strings before I got there. Tied the one where you didn't miss the truck or fall off it to you, but I couldn't fix the guy strangling the shit out of you so, you know, I had to show up for that one."
"You could have just jumped…"
"Not so good with moving targets," Rowan said. "Sometimes I miss… you know? I didn't want to throw Wo and miss, that would not have been good."
Steve thought about that and then nodded, only to suddenly pause like a realization had dawned on him.
"Where is your brother actually?" Steve asked.
"Con? He's doing me a solid and distracting Nahele. How do you think I got into the kitchen without him? Or up these stairs?" she said lifting what had to be a glass of alcohol to her lips.
"Nope, no, we're not going on that ride again," he said taking it from her. "And besides, I meant your other brother. Your oldest brother. He's supposed to be coming back and I need to talk to him."
"Oh, he's on his way to start his new job."
"He has a new job?"
"Uh-huh," she said walking away but not really moving to elaborate.
It wouldn't be until Steve finally got a hold of Kono that he'd find out exactly what it was that Wo Fat was doing. But he wouldn't tell anyone just how proud he was that he helped make that a reality for both of them, even if I was a small part.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Kono, was not going to the party.
She couldn't.
She was on a plane. They had found out that the they were going to be taking the girls onto a charter plane, one that would have taken them to Carson Nevada. Clearly the next leg of this particular route.
From there they could have been shipped out to any where in the states.
Just knowing that there were probably a dozen more houses, just like Devon's, filled with girls in each of those cities, at minimum, had Kono's blood boiling. She knew she couldn't just sit back and not help because she didn't know if those departments in those cities even had the resources or the will to look into this? To stopping this?
She just didn't know, and she didn't want to leave it up to chance either.
So she was going to go.
She was going to shut down all of the places she could if it was the last thing she did.
But she hadn't told annoy, lest they try and stop her.
"Hello," some one said and Kono jumped.
She looked up and Wo Fat was standing before her. Or more aptly, in the aisle. He wasn't looking at her, as he was shoving his carry on into the storage bin above their seats. She knew it was him because he was dressed the same as when she saw him that after noon, there was a bandage around his arm from where he got lacerated from the over turned car, and she could see the burn scars on both his arm and his neck.
What she didn't know was why he was there.
He carefully dropped into the seat beside her. "Hope you don't mind, but I've been sent to tag along."
Kono looked him up and down. "Wait what? Rowan didn't have to do that."
"Well, it's not all Ro's idea," he said as he was getting comfortable and reaching for the in-flight menu.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, the truth is that, uh… I'm going straight…" Holy shit. What? Wo Fat, going straight? Did Steve know? "…and well, I was supposed to turn myself in next week and get my assignment then, but Ro told me what you were planning to do and she wanted you to have back up so here I am. I'm uh… technically working for the CIA, but I've talked them into A, letting you have me, and B, you having a task force in charge of trafficking. I'm your first hire, your own professional rat."
Kono's smile widened.
"Ro also figured you could use my expertise cause I know the smuggling trade so… yeah… what do you say? Partners?"
He offered her a hand to shake and Kono took it, without even thinking. She was so happy she could kiss him.
"Not going to lie, I'm used to flying first class so I'm probably going to be annoying during this flight," he said. "Are the seats always so uncomfortable back here? Why is there such little space? Oh, champagne is free right? It better be… I'm going to need a lot of alcohol to deal with this cramped space they've got me in…"
Still, she could help but smile at him. She just couldn't. Because she knew, without a shadow of a doubt that with his help, they were going to be unstoppable.
