Chapter 393

Steve came down that morning, his badge and gun on his hip. It was going to be a calm Saturday. He was going to finish up paperwork, then be back to the house in time for dinner.

He promised Nahele he'd practice his football throws with him when he got home. He promised Rowan cuddling at some point this night.

Unless a case came in, everything was set to go good for him and he was excited about that. More than looking forward to coming home at a decent hour, not torn up, not exhausted. Looking forward to just being plain old boring and domestic. Fuck he loved being boring and domestic with his family.

He kissed his wife good bye, hugged his son, and then was out the door.

However he realized that he had left the lunch that Rowan had made him so he returned to the house. He opened the door and right away Rowan was coming towards him.

"That was quick," she said.

He smiled at her teasing. "Just forgot lunch."

"It's on the counter," she said and then she headed for the stairs. Steve figured to go back to bed, but instead, she called up the stairs for their son with an added: "Hurry up, Hele, I wanna beat the traffic."

Steve stopped in his tracks. Rowan hadn't told him that she and Nahele had something planned today.

Not that she had to tell him all aspects of her day, but he liked to know what the general plan was, so you know… if something happened, he was at least aware of where they were. He had also asked that she stop doing so many things on her own with Nahele.

Just because he was starting to feel like the two of them were in this sort of club… that he wasn't a part of.

When he asked, Rowan had said that if he didn't want her and Nahele bonding more than he and Nahele were bonding, then he should be around more. But that wasn't fair. He had work. Work took up a lot of his time… and it had unpredictable hours.

He had a feeling she hadn't told him about this outing to spare his feelings, but he didn't appreciate it.

Nahele came pounding down the stairs looking extra excited and Steve's curiosity was piqued.

"You ready?" Rowan asked him and their son nodded happily at her. She then turned back to Steve, giving him yet another kiss on the cheek. "Well, lunch is on the counter have a good day at work."

She went to move away but he grabbed onto her.

"Hold on, wait a second, where are you guys going?" he asked.

"Driving lessons," Nahele said with a grin. "Mom's going to take me out and teach me some maneuvers."

Steve blinked his eyes. "You got your learners permit?"

"I did!"

Steve's whole body froze. His son had gotten his learners permit and he had no idea? How… how was that possible?

"When?"

"Like… right after my birthday."

Oh my god! That was like… two months ago. Why had no one told him?

"I thought we agreed, he wouldn't try until he was done school… that was what we agreed on!" Steve reminded them and Rowan winced.

"Oh… well… yeah… we were, but I caught him trying to sneak off to take the test, and working extra hours to afford it, so I said he could get his permit and we'd start lessons in the summer… I swore I spoke to you about this."

Except she hadn't because he would have remembered.

"I… wait… but… what?" Steve cried. "Did you pass right away?"

"Yeah my first try!"

Steve's eyes narrowed into a glare. "Why didn't I know about this?"

"I unno," Nahele said with a shrug. "I could have sworn I told you but you were also dealing with some major cases at the time…"

Steve stood there staring a the two of them. They had done this on purpose, he knew it. He had missed out on a major milestone in his son's life, Rowan had kept it all to herself, and he didn't know why. All he knew was that he was pissed.

His glare eventually settled on Rowan, who was wincing very deeply, and she groaned.

"Why the hell didn't you tell me our son passed his learner's permit and was learning to drive?"

"Uh…." Rowan drew out. "Uh… I thought you knew? I mean, we didn't keep it a secret, we had a celebration and… actually come to think of it I think you missed the celebration," she said and Steve groaned. "Yeah… you uh… you got caught up with the uhm… the post Shioma debacle. Yeah, you were doing all sorts of press junkets if I remember correctly…"

He missed out on that massive milestone in his kid's life… because of Rowan's stupidity with the Shioma incident? FUCK.

"Okay, fine, fine, but why in gods name have you been the one giving him lessons, Rowan?"

"Because I have the valid driver's licence Steven," she snapped. "You can't take him. You have to be a valid license holder. Which you are not."

Steve's jaw dropped.

"Rowan," he growled.

"No," she said right away. "You're not allowed, Steven! I don't want you to teach him all your unsafe practices…"

"I do not have unsafe…" he started and then he stopped and took three breaths to calm himself down. "Okay… okay… Rowan… that's such bullshit and you know it. And we both know you're the more reckless driver. Not me! You pull your shit without a siren and flashers and…"

"Steven… don't you have work to go to?"

Steve was about to lose his shit. The whole learning-to-drive ritual was something for a father and a son. He had missed out with his dad, he was not missing out with his son.

Steve turned to Nahele and pointed at him. "When I get home tonight we're going to practice."

"I can't," Nahele said with a wince.

"Why? What you got plans for tonight? Cause we were supposed to throw the pigskin…"

"He has a learner's permit Steve, he can't drive at night," Rowan told him cutting off his complaint. "Did you not know that?"

"Oh shut up, I bet the only reason you know is cause he told you," Steve snapped and Rowan said nothing. Ha, he had her there!

"Fine, but next driving lessons is with me," he said and then he turned to his wife. "And you and I are going to talk about why you didn't tell me this happened. Cause seriously… this hurts…"

Rowan moved to hug him and despite being mad at her he hugged her back. "I honestly thought he told you," she said.

"Yeah, and I could have sworn I did, dad," Nahele added.

Right so he had been an oversight. Yeah, even better. That was sarcasm this was like a sucker punch to his heart.

"We'll talk about this when I get home," he said and then shot a glance at his son. "But good luck today."

Nahele hugged him again, the two waved him off as they pulled out of the garage in Rowan's pastel purple GTO leaving Steve behind in the house. He ended up going to the Palace as planned, after first detouring to Danny's so he could bitch about what had just happened.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

That night Steve got home, sat his son down and got him to tell him when he'd be available for Steve's lesson.

He originally got scheduled a few days later. But then he caught a smuggling case.

So they rescheduled for the following weekend, but then he caught a triple homicide.

By then Nahele's exams were coming up and Rowan wanted him to focus on his studies instead of driving.

Nahele aced his exams, like they knew he would. They had a celebration, they let him pick what he wanted to do, which was a nice dinner out with his family, and then there was a few days where he got to just relax.

But finally, finally Steve was going to get his chance. He was going to teach his son to drive.

He decided that he wanted Nahele to learn in the Marquis, like Steve might have been able to do with his dad if his dad hadn't sent him away to military school around the time he was supposed to learn to drive.

He and Nahele got into the car and he tried to hide his excited smile.

"Alright. So what's the first thing you do?"

"You check the position of your tires," he said. "And I checked and the back are a little crocked but it's okay. The next is adjust my seat, and then my mirrors…"

"Very good," Steve said his smile kind of fading. Rowan had done a really good job teaching him. There wasn't a single thing she had missed so far.

He sat there and watched as Nahele moved the seat around and then adjusted the mirrors.

"Okay, great, what's next?"

"Uhm… seat belt on. Start car, emergency break off and then go," Nahele said. "But uhm… can you tell me the route we're taking?"

"Oh…" Steve said and then he paused. "I uhm… I was going to make it up as I went…"

"Oh uh… well… mom gives me a route… cause I'm… you know… I'm learning and it helps me to not be… nervous…"

"Oh uhm… then why don't you take one of her old ones?" he offered and then he paused. "Or we could try my way, I mean you're not always going to pick your route, you know? You gotta be able to adapt."

"Okay," Nahele said after a pause. "I can… yeah we'll do it your way."

The kid tried to smile but Steve could see that he was nervous. So, Steve smiled widely at him to encourage him, being sure to pat his arm so he knew that Steve had his back.

The kid got the car started and then they driving away from the house.

Steve normally didn't like being a passenger, he got car sick, but the excitement of being able to give his son a driving lesson was muting that. Though, out of habit, he was holding onto the grab handle above his head.

Nahele wasn't driving badly mind you, it was just reflex.

As they drove Steve gave him directions and Nahele followed them flawlessly.

And then Steve thought it might be nice to practice on the more… island roads. Not the dirt roads, but the one lane ones.

Nahele had been nervous about that, he wasn't allowed to go on the highway yet, but this wasn't a highway. Not really, so Steve had him go on it.

But the speed limit was 100 and Nahele was nervous about going that fast, as he hadn't done that yet.

Steve had been so goddamn excited to finally find something that Rowan hadn't done with him. A first with Nahele in a car, that he hadn't been able to see reason.

"You can do it," Steve had said to him and with Steve's encouragement he took them onto the road.

Nahele was doing really good too, he was getting more and more comfortable going faster and Steve was getting prouder and prouder by the second.

But then a grandma go in front of them, doing 70 in a 100 zone.

That's when the arguing started.

Nahele had slowed down to match the car in front of them, but Steve kept trying to urge him forward. Either to go around or, at the very least, honk the horn, but Nahele wasn't comfortable with either.

Yeah, except they were getting to a point where Steve had to get the kid home before five, as he wasn't allowed to drive past that time, and they were pretty far away from home. If this person didn't speed up, if Steve couldn't get them around this painful slow car, they were going to be late and Nahele might get in trouble.

Eventually Steve found himself raising his voice.

"Just go, go around, Nahele," he was crying. "Speed up and go around!"

And though his kid was uncomfortable he did as he was told, speeding up, darting onto the other side of the road and around the car.

They got around the car, Steve thought that maybe things would calm down between them. He'd apologize in a few miles, get them back to the city and treat him to… you know what, he'd let Nahele pick.

But then the flashing lights in the rear-view mirror showed up and Steve turned around, absolutely shocked that this was happening.

"Oh my god."

"No, no, it's okay," Steve said. "Uh… just signal and pull over, okay?"

Nahele nodded and did as he was told. Steve noted that the poor boy was shaking, his knuckles were white he was gripping the steering wheel so tight.

Right… well that just meant that Steve was going to take care of this.

They waited as the cop ran the plates and did whatever they had to do before approaching the window. Steve was already contemplating his next step. He had to fix this for Nahele. Prove to his kid that he'd do anything he had to for him, could fix anything for him.

Just like Rowan could.

So when the cop came up to the window he was ready to scare the pants off of this lowly officer.

"I'm uh… I'm Lieutenant Commander Steven McGarrett of Five-0…" Steve stared and then stopped when he recognized who was at the window. "Pua!" he cried super excited to see a familiar face. "Oh great…"

He looked first at Steve and then to Nahele. "Do you know how fast you were going?"

Nahele winced. "I thought I was doing the speed limit…"

"You were doing 120," Pua said. Not cracking a single smile. Always the professional. "Licence registration and insurance please."

"Really Pua? I mean… do you really need to see that?" he asked.

Pua's face remained the same. "Yes, Steve, I do," he said. "Now, licence, registration and insurance."

"Dad, just give it to him,"

Steve sighed but did as he was told, handing Pua first his license and then digging through the glovebox for everything else.

By the time he was handing Pua the rest he could see a frown on the man's face.

"Is… is something wrong?"

Pua's eyes were on his licence and Steve mentally swore. "Yes… there is… I'm going to have to ask you to get out of the car…"

"I'm sorry, Pua, come on, I mean… you know me. And uhm… my son and I were just practicing his driving…"

"Your licence is expired, sir."

"Sir? Pua. You know me," Steve cried. "But I know but… I mean… it's just a lesson… and I drive for work…"

"He's not on your insurance, Sir," the cop said and Steve frowned. "Commander, I can't give you a hall pass. The fact of the matter is you are not a valid licence holder at the moment, he's not on your insurance and therefore I cannot let you leave."

"I… can I drive home?" Nahele asked in a small voice and the beat cop frowned at him.

"Uh… no…"

"Then… Then…"

"You'll have to have someone tow the car back or…"

"Tow my car?" Steve cried. "Okay you know what, who's your shift commander?"

"Dad!" Nahele cried. "Stop it, you've done enough!"

Steve stopped, he took a good look at his son and saw that not only was he absolutely livid but he was literally about to cry.

When Steve went quiet Nahele turned back to Pua. "I'm sorry Pua… oh… I mean officer Kai, you were saying something?"

Pua shot Steve an unimpressed glare before turning back to Nahele and saying: "Yes, you can leave the car here and I can drop you off at home, where you can call a tow truck, or you can have someone come here to meet you and drive you back."

"Or I could just drive us back…"

"You don't have a valid licence," Pua near shouted and then he took two deep breaths before pinning Steve with a stern glare. "Do I need to arrest you, Commander McGarrett?"

"No!" Nahele cried. "No, no, I… I'm just gonna call my mom. Can I do that? Can I call my mom?"

Now it was Steve's turn to cry out in dismay. "No, we don't need Rowan…"

"Well, she's the only other person on your insurance…"

Steve groaned and already Nahele was reaching for his phone. "I'll just call my mom, thank you," he said and Pua nodded.

Steve watched as Nahele dialed Rowan's number and then winced at how quickly Rowan picked up, and how Nahele practically sobbed her accolade.

As he explained the situation Steve sighed, she was never going to let this go. They had argued about this, on and off while he and Nahele had been trying to schedule a time. She was right and he hated it when she was right because the lecture would be coming later.

As Nahele was talking to her Pua tapped Nahele's shoulder and handed him a ticket, the boy's face fell even farther and Steve's heart sunk.

Yeah he was in trouble.

Nahele confirmed with Pua that Rowan was on her way to get them and drive the car home. He said something about how he was going to put a call into dispatch to tell them off the situation and if someone caught Steve behind the wheel of that car tonight he'd get arrested or the car would be impounded.

Steve was absolutely livid.

But eventually Pua left them there on the side of the road. Nahele wouldn't speak to him. Steve tried to talk to him but Nahele literally got out of the car to avoid him and then walked away from him when he got out too.

Steve gave up after that.

Thirty minutes later a cab pulled up and there was Rowan glaring at the two boys, though mostly at Steve.

"I told you so," she said and Steve scowled.

Great.

Just. Fucking. Great.

Cause that's what he needed to hear right now.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Rowan was quiet the whole ride home, but Steve didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

Nahele, too, was quiet. He had sat in the back, scowling and ignoring even Rowan's attempts to engage him. Steve was in the passenger seat, holding onto grab handle above him, grinding his teeth in his own anger.

Even though Pua was gone, Rowan wouldn't let him drive, and after Nahele told her that HPD would be looking out for the car to make sure Steve wasn't driving, she was not happy. When he continued to argue, she threatened to throw him home and let the drive be just her and Nahele.

What hurt was that as soon as that became an option that was what Nahele wanted. He seriously didn't want to drive back with Steve in the car with him. And that was hurtful.

He had literally never seen Nahele that mad at him before.

This was bad. Really, really bad.

They got home, she parked the Marquis in the garage beside her GTO and then they were heading into the house.

And that would be when all the anger exploded out of Rowan.

"I told you, didn't I?" she cried and Steve turned back to her with a sigh. "Didn't I? I told you, taking him out without a valid licence would get him in trouble. But someone didn't want to listen to me!"

"Well, I'm sorry, Rowan, but I just wanted to teach my son to drive. Was that so bad?"

"YES!" Nahele suddenly shouted. Both Steve and Rowan turned to him to find him standing in the living room clutching his ticket and scowling at Steve. "I was doing so well and you just had to be selfish and ruin it!"

"Selfish?!" Steve echoed.

"The only reason you wanted to teach me to drive is because Rowan was doing it and you have this thing about me and her being closer! You didn't want to help me, you wanted to do something so I'd like you more thing Rowan!"

"It is not just a thing, it's a verifiable fact! AND… It is a rational thing to be upset about because you do like Rowan more than me. You didn't even tell me that you got your licence, you didn't think I'd want to know?"

"Well maybe, if you wanted to be a part of my life, maybe you should be there for it!"

"I do not control the crime on Hawaii!"

They were squaring off screaming at one another. Nahele's face was red, Steve was shaking, and it took Rowan getting in between them to stop them. It honestly felt like Nahele was gearing up to hit him.

"Stop it, stop it the both of you!" she cried turning a disappointed glare between the two of them. Nahele backed away and the first of his frustrated tears fell.

"This ticket means I could lose my learner's permit, mom," he said softly and she turned to focus on him.

"Yes, and you knew that," she said. "When you agreed to go with your dad you knew about his licence being expired and what that would mean for you."

"He shouted at me to go around! He made me speed!""

"No, he didn't. You should have just said no," she said and then she turned on Steve. "You shouted at our son during a driving lesson?"

Steve winced. "I mean… I wouldn't call it shouting but I did raise my voice," he whispered. "I just… at the rate we were going I wouldn't have been able to get him back home before five and…"

"Steven! I told you he was nervous driving, that he over thinks things and you can't make him more nervous. You promised me you wouldn't. You said you could handle this."

"And I can!" he cried, though today had kind of proved her wrong. God he hoped he got a second chance to fix this.

"You told him I was nervous?" Nahele asked and she turned around again.

"Yes, baby, I had to, cause I didn't trust him to play nice. He has a back seat driving thing…" she said and then she sighed. "Look the both of you are at fault here."

Both Steve and Nahele opened their mouths to argue but she put up a hand to stop them from saying anything.

"It is. Steven, you should have known better. Nahele you shouldn't have gone with him," she said and they both hung their heads so they missed the way Rowan's face softened.

"But… Nahele, Steven wanted to take you driving because he missed out on doing it with his dad and he wanted to do it with you," she said and a sort of soft smile donned his son's face.

"Really?" he asked and Steve nodded which made the smile widen.

"And Steven, Nahele wanted you to take him driving because he wants all the father-son bonding moments normal kids have," she said. "He was doubly nervous to go driving with you because of how motion sick you get at times."

"Aww," Steve said trying to hide his proud smile.

The two boys were avoiding each other's eyes. This was too much emotion for the both of them. Their cheeks were tinged pink, and they were clearly trying to appear manly despite the high emotions in the room.

"Now. Was this stupid? Yes. But both of you knew the consequences, and you decided to go for memories instead. I understand you're upset but screaming at each other when you're both in the wrong does not help the situation."

Steve nodded and so did Nahele.

"Now. From now on, Steven, if you want to give him driving lessons, I have to be in the car. Okay? I'm sure we can figure out a time that works for all three of us during the summer."

Nahele seemingly perked up and so did Steve. He glanced at his son and then cleared his throat. "I'm sorry I shouted at you," he told him. "Uhm… both times."

"It's okay." He said with a shrug. "The way I see it is uh… we had our first argument. But uh… you're paying for my ticket cause it's your fault."

He handed Steve the ticket, hugged his mom and then Nahele was heading towards the stairs leaving him and Rowan in the living room.

Steve turned to look at her. "That's fucked up and he gets it from you."

Rowan just rolled her eyes and then she too headed up the stairs.

Well… things couldn't get much worse, could they? In fact, he'd bet that, after this, things were going to start looking up.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Once Malcolm and Trevor had been dating for a good six months, Trevor officially took him to Toronto to meet his dad.

Malcolm had not been comfortable coming out to many people, his parents were not aware yet, and Trevor was aware of this. So in solidarity he hadn't told his dad about the new relationship.

Telling Sarah had been non-negotiable. She already knew Malcolm, and as Trevor's best friend she had to know they were dating.

Malcolm had figured that knowing Sarah in advance would earn him some brownie points with her, but it did not. She was terribly critical at all times and made it abundantly clear that she would always side with Trevor, even when he was wrong.

So you know, that was great.

But then the first argument they had, she actually proved to Trevor that he was wrong and made him apologize. But that was Sarah for you, apparently she was a hypocrite and a conundrum.

Then she caught the custody case and their lives became about supporting her through this.

Since Trenton didn't know about the relationship though, the purpose of this trip was not to introduce a boyfriend but a fact-finding mission. Trevor had convinced his dad that he trusted him enough to tell him the supposed family secret about Rowan

It was this big huge massive secret, though Malcolm had no idea what that could be… you know, since he had read her file. Her file was huge of massive truth bombs. He was actually curious how much the two of them knew about this woman they claimed to be related to them.

If they saw her file maybe he'd change her mind.

The two had a few days to themselves before Trenton was free, and when he was they went to meet his dad at his office. They exchanged introductions and pleasantries and then after a bit of small talk Trevor eventually said: "Kay dad… show him."

Trenton blinked his eyes before reaching for a drawer.

"You have to understand, if I show you this, you can never tell another soul," he said.

Malcolm nodded. "I understand, sir."

Trenton straightened and Malcolm's eyes narrowed at the oblong rectangle in his hand. "A VHS? Really?"

"Yes, I had to use old school equipment in specially designed safety boxes," he said. "It was the only thing I could get to work."

He wheeled a TV and VCR out of the closet and began to set it up.

"And besides, I wanted something unhackable," he added. "Don't trust clouds or any drop boxes or computer. Too easy to hack, too easily corrupted.

Malcolm turned to Trevor, was he aware that his dad was a lunatic? He didn't want to say anything but… this guy was very much giving off a whole eccentric scientist vibe.

He got the TV on, put the VHS in the VCR and then a video was playing.

Trenton had given them a bit of a tour, so Malcolm recognized the lab right away. He even recognized the girl in the video.

A brown-severe-bob-haired version of the girl in his file. It was Rowan. She looked a lot different, but he could tell it was her, the eyes were the same.

A similar electric blue to Trevor's except her blue was more sea blue while Trevor's eyes were a more sky blue. Was it stupid that he noticed that sort of shit?

She had this happy girlish smile on her face. She was standing in the lab in this harness looking thing with a thick silver chain hanging off of it.

"Right, show 'em what you can do."

She nodded, turned around, lifted her hand and a big black opening appeared in front of her. For a second the VHS almost flickered but the image steadied and she walked into the opened disappearing. The chain went taunt, fell to the ground, snaking on it's own towards a farther part of the lab where yet another black opening appeared and Rowan walked out, the silver chain attaching to it's severed end again.

Malcolm's mouth dropped. "I… what… what was that?"

"Just watch," Trevor hissed.

"That it what we call portalling," Trenton's voice on the tape said. "Let's show them the shield."

And then a shot rang out.

Malcolm jumped.

Once again the lines of static ran up the screen and an orange translucent shield appeared in front of Rowan. There was ping and a ripple along that shield at the point of impact.

"Very good," came Trenton's voice again. "How about a pull? Can you pull something?"

"Sure," Rowan said. "What should I pull?"

"How about… how about a chair?"

Rowan nodded, her eyes went sort of glassy and the static appeared on the video again. The video cleared in time for Malcolm to watch her reach out a hand and pull at something with one quick jerk.

The static happened again, and a chair popped into place. And then with a flick of her hand a little more static the chair disappeared.

"And that right there was a throw," she said proudly.

"Good job," he heard Trenton say to the girl on the video and her smile widened.

But then there was a bang, a regular door slamming open kind of bang, and a voice he didn't recognize shouted: "Are you video tapping her?"

Rowan's smile faded, her eyes turning to someone off screen. He heard Trenton faltering to explain and one loud growl of: "I specifically said no to that!"

And that's where the video ended.

Malcolm just sat there at the end of it staring first and the now blank TV and then to Trevor and then to Trenton.

"I… so she… she what has magic powers?" he asked. "Like… she can… she can teleport? I can't believe… actually, no, no I do cause that explains everything in her file."

"Uh… what?"

And now was the time to trade information.

"Right. So here's what I know about your sister," Malcolm said. "Uhm, everything was basically as you said. Five years ago, she dropped out of the sky, was found by Steve and taken in by him. There's a whole bunch of shit that goes down when she's with him too, like… way abuse stuff… like to the point where the Governor of Hawaii intervened, sorta the stuff that you were worried about, but that's not what's important…"

"She really was getting abused by him?" Trenton asked and then frowned. "How is that not important?"

"Because the weird shit happens later," Malcolm said, fully planning to let them come back to the bullshit reports he had on the messed-up shit Steven McGarrett had been doing to Rowan back then.

"About two years ago, she got kidnapped by the Yakuza. It was a standard K and R, they wanted money from Wo Fat, who happens to be listed as her brother."

"And which one was he?" Trenton asked.

"Oz," Malcolm answered. "He touched down in Tokyo four days later and literally obliterated the building they had her in. No survivors, torched the place and then he went out to the Oyabun's compound, raped his wife, killed his kids and killed him."

Trevor blinked his eyes. Yeah, Oz had always seemed like the more dangerous out of the two brothers.

"After that, the two of them drop off the face of the earth," he said. "From my understanding he did it because McGarrett showed up on the scene, looking for Rowan."

"Steven McGarrett."

"Yes, he was apparently dating her before this, for about a year. But shortly after he finds out Wo Fat faked her death, and a red flag was put on the file. Called him volatile, and a stalker. Apparently he had a habit of using his immunity and means against her."

Jesus, and they had left her with him.

"Anyway, when Rowan shows up again, she's in Paris. She sent a picture to Steven and he had Interpol comb the city for her. They didn't find her. Month later, Wo Fat kills a under cover Interpol agent in Venice. Six months later something goes down in Colombia. Wo Fat's associate is put into a position of power and Rowan has a new name. La Bruja."

"Yes," Trenton said quickly. "She had a void incident. First instance of portal opening in a very long time. It was why she came to Toronto. She wanted help controlling what happened to her."

"And you gave it to her," he said.

"I… well… yes I wanted to help her and…"

"Yeah, well that's probably how things start getting… shady…"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, did you know that she was in that car that Anton died in?" Malcolm asked but both Trevor and Trenton seemed to not know that. "Yeah, there's video footage of her in the car, the car crashing and then nothing. She's not in the car anymore. She didn't fall out, she was never found, by the looks of it she never ever got hurt. It was like…"

"She jumped out of the car," Trenton finished. "Were the electronics in the car fried?" Malcolm nodded and Trenton sighed. "Then yes, she jumped out of the car and to safety."

"Okay well, after all she did with the Stepanov's, Rowan and her two brothers go dark again. There's all these heists that they suspected of him, Wo Fat I mean, but they were all in quick succession and all over the world. If she has portal powers that would be how he did it."

"Great, so Oz is using her to commit crimes?"

"Well, not anymore. There were four heists in total and then they all just stop. She goes dark again."

Well that was good, at least she wasn't being forced to help a criminal. Though he had a feeling that Rowan was loyal to the point where she wouldn't have had to be forced. She probably volunteered.

"Now there was a bunch of other stuff that went down, but we're going to skip ahead to the end of the year."

"Yeah? Why, what happens?"

"She goes back to Steven."

"Whoa!" Trenton cried. "Are you shitting me? She went back to him?"

"Mhmm, he had TSA pull her off a Disney Cruise and arrest her. Wo Fat broke her out of custody and then two days later she and McGarrett are on Hawaii and back together."

"Oh my god… so he's like… really got her Stockholmed."

"You bet. They got married this November. Changed her name and everything. She's Rowan McGarrett now."

Across from them his dad swore because this was a lot worse than they thought it was.

"Oz was so protective of her… I can't believe that he'd… that he'd just leave her to him…"

"Well that's the other thing. Wo Fat's been helping Five-0 lately, I thought it might have been a scramble in the chatter, but he turned himself in to the CIA a month ago. He's working with an ex-Five-0 shutting down trafficking rings."

Both men stared at him. No one knew what that meant. Did it mean that Steven had caught them and forced Wo Fat to work with him and then gave him to the CIA for some reason? Didn't sound like Oz, he didn't like to be bossed around, unless, of course, Steven had been threatening Rowan.

Trenton sighed. They were all quiet for a moment thinking of the implications of this.

"If he's abusing her, like we think he is, then we have to get her out of that house and away from him. It's the only way to save her. She clearly won't leave him of her own accord so we're going to have to get her out."

"How he deported us… can we even go back?"

"Oh don't worry about that," Malcolm said. "I have a friend who can get us onto the island under the radar. And since her background is listed as Canadian, I'm sure we can get away grabbing her. We just have to spin it as we're rescuing a citizen in danger."

Both Trevor and Trenton exchanged glances.

"There's a but in there somewhere," Trenton said and Malcolm nodded.

"Firstly, this is going to be an operation. Like a tactical, S.W.A.T. operation," he said. "Her husband alone is a problem, but if her brothers catch wind of this, and their under his control, we're fucked. Steven McGarrett is still bound by the laws, most of them. But her Brothers are not."

"Both brothers?" Trevor asked. "Cause Con…"

"Con is short for Conejo, which is an assassin named Sin Nombre. 100 percent kill streak. He's the most efficient assassin on the market."

"Aww… he was the nice one," Trevor said with a frown.

"Personable, maybe, but he's Wo Fat's trigger man," Malcolm said. "The other issue is her powers. I can't have her opening up a portal mid flight or deflecting us…"

"Well, her powers mess with electronics, her opening up a portal mid flight would no doubt affect the plane. When I met her… from the time I spent with her… I'm not sure she'd chance letting a plane go down with people on it… and she clearly knows and cares about Trevor if she went out of her way to save him from the Stepanovs."

Yes that had been very nice of her. They still didn't know why she did it, Trevor never got a chance to ask her. She might not have done it for him at all, she might have just wanted to fuck with them.

"Hmm… what you'll most likely have issues with is getting near her. She can sense events through the strings. They warn her of things. She also has a pretty strong shield. I might be able to rig something up that would make you invisible to her senses, I know for sure I can create something to get through her shield though."

"That would be great."

"Uhm… how long would that take you."

"Uh, the shield disrupter I already have. I can fit it so it fits onto say… a stun gun or…"

"It would probably be better to tranq her. Keep her under until we get her back."

"Fair. You provide me with the gun and I'll fit the disrupter to it."

"So we're going to do this?" Trevor asked. "like you're really help us?"

"Well… yes," Malcolm said. "But she's been brainwashed by a notorious Crime Boss and McGarrett, it might take a while to get her to see reason."

"If you're talking about Oz, I think you're under estimating her. When they were here it was clear that he was in charge, but what she said goes. He did what she wanted, even when he didn't want to. If anything, she's brainwashed him. Steven however… that might be more than brainwashing."

"What do you mean?"

"There are strings between each person, connections. Her string to Steven is red and it is long and strong enough to have been powering her powers before she learned to control them… or she stole my energizing ray. There are also apparently so many that they created a wall between her and her way home."

"I… what does that mean dad?" Trevor asked.

"Well Rowan said that the red strings between her and Steve were her feelings. And if there are that many feelings between her and Steve that they were stopping her from leaving well then… she probably loves him… a lot…"

Trevor frowned and Malcolm thought it over. "Right, well we're worry about that later. What we have to worry about right now is getting her away from him. And I think… if we give me time, if we get her alone… I think this might work."

Trevor was grinning and Trenton was grinning along with him. Their smiles were so eerily similar it was crazy.

Trenton then clapped his hands. "Why don't we go for dinner? We can discuss this relationship you two are trying to hide from me," he said getting up and both Malcolm and Trevor went still.

Seriously, what the fuck?

How had he figured it out?
