Chapter 395
So, Con got his house.
And Steve and Danny got roped into helping him move.
Or well, Steve got roped in because Rowan couldn't help.
Fucking concussion again.
Hit her head going down the toboggan ride at the Great Wall of China.
Why Wo Fat thought it was okay for her to go on that with her track record was beyond him. But since Rowan was out of commission and Wo in the States helping Kono, Steve was basically the only one available to help. Then he figured, why suffer alone? So he tricked Danny
At first, he didn't think the man had much to move but then he showed up with a moving truck, had Steve and Danny get in and then went to all these different places to pick up furniture because Con had none.
Yeah, that had been fun.
Con, Steve and Danny spent the whole weekend moving things out of the truck, putting things together, and then putting them in their rightful place.
It was so tiring that both Steve and Danny had called in sick that Monday, couldn't chase bad guys when they were sore.
For their day off, both Danny and Steve had the same idea, and that was family time. Nice, relaxing, stay at home and spend time with their families, sort of time.
Danny had gotten Grace and Charlie for the day, Steve was hoping to get Rowan and Nahele, but was not as lucky.
Nahele had plans for the day, out with his friends before heading for a shift over at the Shrimp Truck.
Rowan, however, had been fully available and excited for a date night.
Or well, a date day.
The point is he got to have his wife all day.
They started with home-alone-sex, which was loud and wild and great. Then they had shower sex, and then a regular shower. Then they took a break to make lunch.
Steve made the sandwiches, Ro set up the TV to watch a game which he got to do while she read.
And then they were going to go for dinner.
Not a super fancy dinner, but they were still getting somewhat dressed up for the occasion.
Steve had put the blue button-down shirt that was Ro's favourite and a pair of dark blue denim jeans. Ro was putting on one of her navy-blue summer dresses, with the white lace trim and the open back that he loved. Though that was mainly because it was one of the less expensive labels.
Not that he didn't love her in anything, label or not, he just preferred her in her less expensive things. Made her feel a little bit more in his league. Though… who were we kidding here? Steve was very much not in the same league as his wife.
"Come on Ro, or they're gonna get slammed and we won't get a table!" Steve called up.
He had been milling about downstairs waiting for Rowan to be done changing. He wasn't allowed to be apart of the getting ready process because he couldn't keep his hands off of her, and Rowan had a hard time saying no to him when he was putting on moves and she knew the house was empty. Sometimes it didn't even matter if the house was empty.
Ro called down that she was almost ready and Steve shook his head. That meant she was going to be ready in another ten to five minutes if he was lucky.
"Okay, we'll I'm going to get in the car then!" he called up. "So, you better be ready in five minutes or I'm going to lay on the horn and embarrass you in front of all our neighbours!"
This meant honking and cat-calling her while she left the house. She'd get all red and flustered, and she'd say things like: "Shh, the neighbours are going to think we're weird."
Well, the neighbours already thought they were weird, might as well make sure they knew just how hot Steve thought his wife to be.
They were going to take his Silverado, only because he wanted to drive, and she still wasn't letting him drive her GTO when he didn't have a licence.
He opened the front door to two men on his porch. They had their backs to the door, clearly not planning on knocking any time soon. He immediately he worried about
"Uh… can I help you?"
They were bent over something so he couldn't really get a good look who they were or what they were interested in. But he pretty much figured out that they were in trouble the second they turned around.
At first glance he thought they were in casual clothes. Black jeans and long-sleeved black t-shirts. But it was the black ski masks they had covering their faces that explained to him who they were, or at least, why they were there, and that was when the fear hit him.
Steve didn't even have time to react. He was no where near his gun, he couldn't throw a punch, he didn't even have time to shut the door.
One man turned, tazer in hand and fired.
1200 volts to his chest had him seizing, had every muscle in his body contracting, had him flat on the ground in half a second.
He teetered the edge of consciousness and unconsciousness, which meant that he was aware when they both stepped over him and into his house. Instinctively he knew that they weren't there for him, they were looking for his wife.
And all he could do was send a pulse of warning through the strings to her, warning her to get out, to save herself.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Her strings were twanging. Wildly.
Danger they were telling her.
Danger wasn't just there, or coming for her, it had already struck.
She had felt it when Steve went down, the electric that had shook him that hadn't come from her powers. Felt the warning he pulsed out of himself and into the world around them, he wanted her to leave. Except she wasn't about to do that.
There had been no warning before then, nothing in the strings at all, which was not normal. Her strings always warned her when she or her family was in danger. This time, all she knew was that Steve went down.
And then she was flying down the stairs right away, powers at the ready to protect her husband. He was alive, she knew that much, but she needed to save him from whatever this was.
She got there, found two men in black jeans and black shirts with a ski masks over their faces. They were just standing in their living room, right next to Steve's body. One of them had a gun she didn't recognize in his hands. It looked an awful lot like the guns she had stolen from her dad's lab.
One was crouched over Steven and panic swarmed through her.
She opened a portal instantly, right under Steve. He dropped into it ad she sent him across the street and dropped him onto Con. Probably quite literally cause she didn't really think about where she was sending him, just that she wanted him to be safe.
But that portal got their attention and that would be when they did something strange.
Neither seemed surprised, yes they were startled, but they didn't seem surprised it had happened; There wasn't any of the normal shock and awe or what the hell just happened that she was used to. All they did is turn around, that sci-fi looking gun in the one man's hands raised in her direction.
She waited to see if the strings would warn her and got nothing. She didn't know if they were muted or things were fine, but she was going to stand her ground. Get these assholes out of her house. Maybe drop them off a very high cliff, or in the middle of a shark feeding frenzy.
Yeah, they were going to regret taking on this family.
And then he fired.
She put up the shield, but even with the shield up she could tell that something was off about that dart coming at her. There was a blue sort of haze around it.
Rowan could do nothing but watch it burst through her shield and hit her.
And then the world went black.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve woke up to pain, literally everywhere, in all his limbs, in his head but most of all his chest.
Every synapse of him that was connect to Rowan and her strings was firing all at once. All saying the exact same thing, which was she was in major danger and she needed him.
He lurched up to a hand holding him down, he looked up to find Con sitting beside him.
One glance around and realized that he was in Con's new house, on the couch actually. He had no idea how long that he had been out for but he knew it was too long.
She must have gotten him to safety but not herself which, and he had told her this repeatedly, was not what she was supposed to do. Get herself and Nahele to safety, then him. He was always supposed to be last.
"No… no…" he kept saying as Con kept him from moving. He noted that he had been covered in different temperature modifiers. Ice packs and heating pads covered him, alternating limbs, three sat on his chest alone. Him sitting up had dislodged them all.
"Hey calm yourself, you're not steady yet…"
"Where is she?" he asked which earned him a confused stare from Con. Did he not know what happened? "People showed up… they tazed me, they took Ro…"
"Yep, I know," Con said. Steve turned his bleary eyes onto him.
"Then… did you…. Did you go get her?"
"Nope, got stuck with you instead."
"What the hell does that mean?"
"It means she dropped your unconscious ass onto me, literally onto me, might I add, while I was trying to get over to your place. Knocked me flat to the ground."
"What… why… why were you…"
"I unno, something felt wrong. Like… everything went quiet. I didn't like so I was going to go check… until I got ambushed by you. By the time I got you off and over to the house they were gone."
"Why didn't you go after them?"
"They had her in the car already and were half way down the street." Con snapped. "Now get up, I need you to do your compass thing."
"I… I…" Steve was struggling to get up, even with Con's help.
"Look, Your Five-0s are trying to trace the car based on what I got of the licence plate, but apparently it's a rental. Danny's on his way, Wo's trying to track them but Sandy's still down and according to his CIA friends there's no chatter about grabbing her…"
"I don't know who they were… I'm not even on a case…"
"This could be about Wo, this could be about anything, just come on… help me here… help me find her…"
A sudden static jolt went through him and something strange happened. Like his powers were turning on by themselves but he couldn't see any of the effects. Normally when he felt something like that the world of strings would come to him, or the pulse that took him to Rowan would start to beat a little more steadily to point him in the right direction. None of that happened.
He felt some sort of exchange, like Con was leeching his powers out of him and Steve turned to see that Con's honey brown eyes were glazing over. Going white… like Rowan's did.
But that faded out almost immediately.
He slowly blinked and the feeling left Steve but Con basically stayed the same, frozen still, holding onto him, blinking his eyes, until…
"I know where they are," he said dropping his hold on Steve and moving towards the door.
"No, no, wait…"
"I don't got time for this McGarrett…"
Steve lurched after Con, noting that the man was already geared up and ready to go. Black jeans, white tee-shirt, black leather. That meant he had all his gear Not fair. Steve needed gear too.
At that moment a car pulled up to Con's house.
"Oh great, I'll commandeer the Camaro," he said. "Good ol'Danno will be used to it…"
Steve practically grappled onto Con. "You're not leaving me behind," he cried. "I need to get her back."
"It'd be easier without you…" Con started but at this point Danny was at the door. He took in Steve's frantic state and Con's annoyed one and sighed.
"We're coming along. You get to do all the killing, I'll stick with him to keep him from dying," Danny said.
He didn't even need an explanation he just knew what was going on and already had a solution. This was why Danny was his best friend.
"Fine, but we gotta go fast," Con said, snatching the keys out of Danny's hands. "I'm driving."
As he walked away, Steve lost his grip on Con's arm, which sent him flying into Danny's chest. Thankful his friend was ready to catch him.
"Of course he is," Danny muttered, before turning his attention to Steve.
He helped Steve right himself, helped him get to the car and then when he was in the back with him, Steve said: "I'm going to need to borrow one of the weapons you've gotten hidden on you."
Con didn't even dignify him with an answer. He simply peeled right out of that driveway, heading for Rowan.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Con took them to an airstrip.
Not the same one that Wo flew out of, but it was similar in size, and in the fact that they only ran private charters out of it.
Steve panicked the second he realized where they were going. They were not taking his wife off of this island.
He'd die if she got taken off of that island.
He was not losing her again. He wasn't.
Though it did occur to him wonder why she hadn't just jumped by now. Why hadn't she gotten away? What had they done to her?
Well, if they were smart, they'd have drugged her. If she was out cold that would explain why she hadn't used her powers to get out.
The whole it might hurt Steven excuse was not a thing anymore. If she or anyone else was in danger and she was out of juice she was to pull from him. Non negotiable. He wouldn't be mad, he'd be happy she saved… whoever it was she had saved.
When they got to that airstrip, though, it was clear that they had taken too long.
The plane was already heading down the tarmac, there was no giving chase, it was already at the end, already beginning to climb.
They all got out of the Camaro, to watch it climb into the sky.
Steve was starting to hyperventilate, beside him Danny was wincing and pulling out his phone to call the others, no doubt to start tracking that plane.
Steve was going to have to interrogate everyone here to figure out where that plane was heading, maybe ask Wo to see if he was close enough to head them off.
Steve was honestly about to cry.
How was he going to tell Nahele that he had lost his mom again? How was he going to tell him that he was going to have to go on another quest to find her?
The poor kid was stressed enough.
The only one who seemed to not be reacting was Con.
He just stood there sighing as they watched the plane get farther and father away from them.
How the hell could he be so calm?
"Well… this won't be good."
Steve turned to him. "What the hell are you talking about?" he snapped. "They just got away with my wife, and your sister… and you're going to have to tell Wo that you lost her…"
"I didn't lose her," Con said and then pointed at the rapidly disappearing plane. "She's right there. And I really hope a lot of people don't see what's about to happen cause I don't know how we're going to explain this one."
Steve's eyes narrowed at him.
"Wait what are you talking about?"
Con just shrugged, he was patting down his pockets, a hand disappearing inside his jacket. He pulled out, not a gun, but a pack of cigarettes, and then went about pulling one out and lighting it.
Well, that explained where Ro got her cigarettes. Actually wait… didn't Wo smoke too?
He took a long drag before turning back to Wo Fat. "I mean I don't know what it looks like because we were separated, but the last time someone took her on a plane she didn't wanna be on she downed it."
"Downed it, when the hell did she…"
North Korea.
Blame the taze, but he had completely forgotten about the incident in North Korea. But he remembered now.
Both him and Danny turned to watch with Con, who was just smoking away, as the plane got father and father away. They were waiting for the tell tale sign of void activity and were rewards when there was a sudden pop, loud enough to be heard even from where they were.
There was an orange electric burst in the middle of the plane, where bright orange bolts skated along the surface of the plane until they disappeared.
And then the plane just dropped out of the sky and into the ocean.
