A/N: Well long time no see my wonderful readers. For those of you who were worried, I am not giving up on this fic, but I have been struggling with writing recently, like everything. All that I've been posting right now, for my other stories I mean, are things I've already written and I'm pretty sure I'm going to run out of those soon too. I've been just creatively blocked in all aspects, and just too exhausted to write. I have not given up though, I will try to power through it but if I stop updating, just know it's cause I'm struggling to write! But here's the next chapter, I hope you guys enjoy it and I hope I'm back next week!
Chapter 396
When Rowan woke up, she knew right away that, whatever It was she was in, it was moving. She woke up, her mind cloudy and her sight fuzzy and her strings, while slightly out of her grasp were writhing around her.
She was not happy.
She could tell that Steven was physically alright, in the sense that he was alive and not mortally wounded, and was just freaking out. Both her brothers were alright and freaking out too, which meant they knew what had happened.
But she couldn't quite get a grip on what was going on with her, she still too high to fully work the.
Rowan lurched to her feet, gripping something in front of her to help her up.
It was a seat. The back of a seat.
Was she on a train?
God how she wanted to be on a train. Or a bus. Just something that was the ground.
"Am I… am I on a…."
She struggled to get her words out, but like her strings, her words seemed to be out of her reach.
And she could tell she was on a plane just by the sound alone.
She was on a fucking plane?
Oh, not again!
"Now Rowan… Rowan…"
Rowan turned to where her brother was coming towards her, hands out like he was warding her off.
Seriously, what in the actual fuck was happening? Because out of the two brothers she expected, this was not one of them.
Trevor looked almost exactly like she remembered. His brown hair still had that red tint in it, his eyes were a lighter blue then hers, he was dressed in black jeans and black long sleeved shirt, and he was staring at her, wide eyed. Like he was expecting her to attack him.
Which she just might.
"What have you done?" she hissed. She struggled to move, only to trip up on her own feet and fall into a different seat then the one she had been sleeping in.
The world continued to stay fuzzy, the strings were still tauntingly out of her grasp. To her that could only mean one thing.
"Did you drug me?"
Trevor winced under the weight of that question. "Well… we had to… we didn't think you'd come willingly…"
Who the fuck was we? You know what? It didn't matter, she had a more important question.
"Why is it whenever I end up on a plane, I'm drugged! This is the third fucking time this has happened!" she thundered.
Trevor blinked his eyes and threw a glance over his shoulder. "I think that's the most terrifying sentence I've ever heard…"
Rowan focused on where she was. Maybe she could just drop out of the plane, pull from Steve and hit the tarmac… except the plane wasn't on the runway.
They were already in the air.
God. Damn. It.
"Oh my god," Rowan said forcing herself back up onto her feet and out into the hallway. "Okay, I don't care what's going on, or what you think is happening but I want to go home. Stop the plane. Now."
"No, we can't," Trevor said. And when Rowan just glared at him, he flinched. "You have to understand, he's brainwashed you Rowan!"
"Are you out of your fucking mind?!" Rowan shouted and Trevor jumped. "Why did you do this? Why didn't you just call me like a normal fucking person? Or, I don't know, ring a god damn door bell?"
"Because he… he wouldn't have let me… you didn't know he deported me? He kicked me off of this island there was no was he was going to let me talk to you!"
"Well okay, so Wo's scary but I'm reasonable, and he's not going to do anything I don't want him to do…"
"No, not Wo Fat. Steven. Commander Steven McGarrett deported me!"
Rowan blinked her eyes. Aw… come on.. when? When did Steve even find the goddamn time?
"Okay. I want to say that's a lie but that sounds just like him," she said, her hands coming to her face, her fingers massaging her temples. "Land the plane, we're going to talk this out on the ground."
"No," someone else said and then Trevor was pushed aside.
Now that was someone she hadn't expected to see, but should have realized Trevor wouldn't have been able to do this on his own. Who else would have been able to put this together?
Malcolm looked exactly like she remembered him. All black hair, brown eyes, nothing but sinew and muscle. Everything right down to the scowl was the same.
He crossed his arm over his chest and glared down at her. "No we're not," he said as seriously as possible. He no doubt expected that to intimidate her, but he didn't intimidate her before, and he didn't now either.
Rowan blinked her eyes at him, the strings between them were red, which meant they had either started the having feelings for one another or they were together.
"Oh and you and Malcolm are a thing now huh?" she asked dryly and the two of them exchanged surprised glances. "This is the second time I've gotten you two together. A thank you would have been nice. Not a fucking kidnapping."
"Look, Miss. Pierce, I don't know who…" Malcolm started but Rowan simply interrupted him.
"Land this plane or I will down this plane."
Malcolm just scoffed at her. "I don't take orders from you Miss. Pierce. My job is to return you to Canada and get you away from Steven McGarrett who is clearly emotionally abusing you…"
"Fine. I'll just down the plane."
"Oh you're not going to do that," Trevor said with a smile. "You wouldn't use your powers like that because you'd hurt us and the pilot and…"
"You know about my powers?" she asked and then frowned. "Yeah, course you do… Dad right? Dad told you? I knew I should have let Wo burn down the lab. He's not going to let this go…"
Trevor's eyes narrowed, he drew out the word okay before turning back to her with a warm smile like all of this was perfectly normal. "Alright, well now that that's settled…"
"It is not settled. And I am not as nice as you think I am," Rowan warned. "Now turn this plane around or I will drop us in the ocean."
Malcolm rolled his eyes. "As we already said…"
And that would be exactly when Rowan stopped listened. She gathered up all the anger inside her body, and pulsed it right out of her.
The shockwave that came from her was visible. It knocked the two men in there with her right off their feet. And with it all their electronics went down.
And so did the plane.
Except no one was on it anymore.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
The plane disappeared out of view, because it hit the water. It was no doubt sinking. But Con wouldn't let him go.
"Why aren't we going after her?" he shouted at him, but Con was just passively staring at him, like this whole outburst was boring him.
"You really know nothing about her, do you?" he asked and Steve glared at him.
"My wife and your sister just got kidnapped. She was just in a plane that went down. How are you not freaking out?"
"Cause she wasn't on that plane, you idiot."
Steve opened his mouth to ask how the hell Con could have known that when Steve didn't, when there was a pop and four people came through a portal.
Three men, all wet came tumbling out of that portal hitting the ground with varying degrees of painful whumps. But Rowan, she came out complete dry.
She was in the dress she had been putting on for their date night which had completely been ruined. He could see that she was fine, but he could also plainly see that she was livid.
Didn't need the strings to tell him that, though they were twanging away in warning.
He wanted nothing more than to hug her. He wanted to press her to his chest and hold her close to dispel the fear that had been shaking him up until this moment, but Rowan was too angry for that. He just didn't know why she was pointing that anger at him.
She stepped over the three men, two of them were the dressed-in-all-black attackers and one was the pilot, and approached him.
Con was already stepping away from him, having seen that look on Rowan's face and knowing better than to stick around. He pulled out his phone to call Wo to inform him that Rowan was fine, but Steve just saw this as cowardly move.
"Steve, meet Trevor and Malcolm," she said pointing to the two men who were just lying on the ground gasping. "Apparently you've met at least one of them before."
Steve glanced down to Trevor and then back up to his wife.
Oh.
Shit.
He was in trouble now.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Malcolm and Trevor were taken into Five-0 custody and dropped off at the Palace. The pilot, who had been knocked unconscious had been taken to the hospital. Grover was on his way to sit on him until he woke up. He was to figure out what exactly it was he knew about the crash.
So far, the plan was to say that Five-0 had hit the plane with an EMP burst that messed with the electrical equipment that caused the crash. Hopefully everyone bought it.
Rowan and Steve went with them, but in a different car. Con demanded to be taken home, so once they got to the Palace, she threw him back to his house.
That left Steve and Rowan in his office, because, as much as he'd like to go down there and beat up her fake-brother and his stupid boyfriend, she wanted to talk to him.
"Right, so… I bet your wondering why they chose the nuclear option right out of the gate," Rowan said to him and Steve said nothing. Because he knew why they had gone this route. "No? You don't want to know why they didn't just call me, or ring our doorbell? You don't want to know why they tazed you, or why they drugged me?"
Steve avoided her eyes. God, he should have told her about this, he should have done it long before now. Outside his office he could see Danny lounging against their smart table, grinning wildly, loving this. Cause he had been warning him about this since he did it all those years ago. And Danny always loved it when he was right.
Yeah he wasn't going to love this if it ended his marriage and Steve ended up miserable and sleeping on his couch.
"No… I… I think I know why they chose this route," he admitted and Rowan groaned.
"You have got to be kidding me!" she cried. "You actually deported him? When?"
"It was actually your dad and your brother…"
"STEVEN!" she cried and he winced. "When were they even here? Why wouldn't you tell me?"
"Remember when Wo Fat kidnapped you?"
"The Year of Deceit was hardly a kidnapping…"
"No, before that. The first time."
"OH!" she cried her eyes widening. She looked him up and down and then softly whispered: "…Oh…"
"Yeah, they were searching around that time. Looking for something that dropped in the ocean. The day I found out they were here was the day you woke up from your surgery. The day I confessed my feelings and you thought it was a dream…"
"Oh…"
"I didn't deport them until… well… much later. When you moved out to be with Alex… maybe like… two days before Kono and Adam went to China with my mom…"
"Okay… that tells me when. But Why? Why didn't you tell me? Why did you go straight to the nuclear option?"
"Because you moved out of my house Rowan and I lost my damn mind. Imagine how bad it would have been if they had taken you back to Canada?"
Rowan paused and really thought about it. Yeah he had a point. That was around the time he had started arresting her for nothing, how bad would it have gotten if she left the island.
He might have flagged her a terrorist.
Because Wo Fat definitely would have followed, since he had been shadowing her the whole time too.
She wondered if he knew her family had come looking for her as well.
"Why didn't you tell me any of this Steven?"
"Your family came looking and I sent them away. I figured telling you… any time after it happened was just a fight waiting to happen. We fight enough as is Rowan."
"Alright fair, but you should have told me, Steven," she said. "Might have been less blind-sided by this…"
"I'm sorry," he whispered hanging his head.
"I just… I was so afraid of losing you…"
She sighed, yeah, she got that.
"You realize they think you're the problem right?" she asked and he looked up to her. "Like… they think you emotional manipulated me into staying here… that I'm Stockholmed."
"But that's not true… is it?"
"Course not… I love you," she said and the worry in him deflated and the relief washed through him to fill him up. "But Steve… if they looked at my file… I mean… it looks bad."
Steve shook his head. "Naw, they can't, no one can, I locked down your file. Can't access it without my permission."
Rowan blinked her eyes. "See, see that right there… that's why they did this."
Steve scowled at her. That wasn't fair.
"I locked down your file because of your brother and your powers."
"Why are my powers in my file?"
"They're not, but your DNA is, and it's all over a couple of heists you and your brothers did," he snapped. "I locked down your file so they can't tie you to them, because how are you going to explain being in New York one day and Africa the next?"
Right. Okay, so he had a point there. That was very nice of him.
"Right, fine, so you have a reason, but you have to admit it looks bad."
And she had a point with that too, one that he had to concede too, which he did with a nod of his head.
"So… what do we do?" he asked. "What do you want to do?"
She wasn't sure why he asked that, he knew he well enough to know exactly what it was she wanted to do.
It was clear her family knew about her existence, even if they weren't technically her family. But they didn't just know about her, they had been looking for her.
She wanted her family back.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
After talking everything through and agreeing on a plan of attack, Steve went down stairs to brief Trevor and Malcolm and eventually bring them back upstairs. You know, once they agreed to the terms and conditions.
Rowan was to wait in his office, and to entertain herself she was playing with Steve's phone. Which was when the calls started to come in.
At first she didn't recognize the number, so she simply hung up.
But then the app began to flash, which was odd, because it was down right now. The only thing operational was the link between her brothers and Five-0, so the Five-0s could contact them without actually calling him.
It was then she realized that Wo was trying to call Steven, and she had hung up on him.
Seriously, why didn't Steve had Wo Fat saved in his phone by now? He called him all the time, he might as well save it.
Rowan answered the phone with: "Steven's phone."
"I know who I called," Wo snapped. "I would have called you except you don't have your phone."
"Hi Wo," she said cheerily. "Didn't Con call? He should have told you I'm okay…"
"Yes I know you're okay, but that's not why I'm calling," he said. "I want you to pull me. Pull me right now."
"Oh do you want to see Jian? I can open you a portal to Japan."
"Okay, don't play dumb with me. You know I said pull. You know I mean to you. Pull me right now," he ordered.
Wow, he wasn't playing about today. He sounded absolutely livid too. Didn't really make her want to pull him.
"Why? I'm okay, I don't need you…"
"You pull me right this instant, do you understand?" he cried interrupting her right away.
Rowan's eyes narrowed in surprise. "Okay, yeah, but aren't you on a case?"
"Did Trevor Pierce not just attempt to kidnap you?"
"I mean he did…"
"Pull. Me. Now."
"I'm not going to let you kill my brother."
"He's not your brother!" Wo Fat shrieked and Ro nearly choked on her own air. Oh dear lord. He really was freaking out. "Rowan Pierce, so help me, if you don't pull me, I will fly back to Hawaii today!"
Though she was tired she immediately opened up her senses to take a good look at his strings.
He was jealous. She could tell. His strings were practically oozing with it. Though what he had to be jealous about was beyond her.
"Okay, okay, calm down. Are you somewhere private?"
"Yes?"
"No cameras? Cause you seem to miss those a lot."
"Oh, will you just pull me."
So she did. She grabbed the pink string that bound him to her and tugged. Wo Fat came through the portal in front of her, already unsteady. Much like Steven, getting pulled unsettled him, it took him a while to bounce back. But while Steve needed a couple of minutes to shake off the affects of a pull, Wo only needed a few seconds.
"You okay?" she asked, her hands on his elbows. He was in a mirrored position, his eyes wide, swallowing over and over like he was trying to keep himself from throwing up. But it only took a few blinks for that to fade away.
"Yeah, no, yeah I'm good."
"Okay… do you… do you need a hug?" she asked. Wo Fat hated it when she implied that he needed emotional support, but after glaring at her for a bit he eventually nodded.
She pulled him in close for that hug and then smiled into his shoulder. "You know you're always gonna be my big brother, right?"
Wo Fat's hug got a little tighter. Clearly he was worried that she'd replace him with Trevor but that wasn't possible. As much as she wanted to pretend that this Trevor was her Trevor, he wasn't. And she wasn't even sure she wanted her Trevor around anymore.
They were awfully toxic siblings.
"He doesn't share your DNA…"
"Neither do you."
"Alright, fair," he whispered. He let her go and took a step back, his fingers going for his watch to fiddle with the clock face. And there was that nervous tick.
"It'll be fine, I promise. I'm not going to stop loving you, just because I have a Trevor back in my life, okay?"
Wo Fat scoffed an "I don't care," at her, and Rowan shook her head. Because she knew he did. He cared very much, that was why he wanted to be there.
The stood in silence, Wo Fat trying to fix up the little inconspicuous pieces of him he thought was out of order while Rowan lounged against Steve's desk.
They must have been arguing with him because this was taking a long time.
Eventually the elevator dinged and the three men walked off. Rowan was immediately straight and walking around the desk.
Was it bad that she was nervous?
Should she be nervous?
I mean, they were supposed to be her family… granted her family didn't really like her… would these people be different? She didn't know, and she was super scared to find out.
It would kill her if her family basically hated her in two different universes.
"Who does he have with him?" Wo Fat asked. She turned to find that his eyes had narrowed in Malcolm's direction.
"Malcolm Garbo he was…"
"Your handler… right? The one who handcuffed you to a radiator."
"That's the one," she said watching as Steve ushered them into his office.
The two men from her past came in first, followed by Steve whose eyes narrowed when he spotted Wo standing where Steve usually stood, in front of his chair behind his desk. He simply groaned and then asked: "Why is he here?"
"Moral support," Rowan said right away. She was going to let Steve believe that he was there for her, but that wasn't true. Rowan was going to be Wo Fat's moral support through this moment.
"Hi Oz!" Trevor said waving at him, Wo said absolutely nothing but instead glared at him. In his typical terrifying fashion.
"So you guys talked things out?" Rowan asked.
Steve nodded. "They uh… they want to talk to you though… alone."
"No."
The single word startled everyone because it came from Wo Fat, in a deep and dark tone that clearly no one would argue with. It was probably the most dangerous word he had ever spoken, it had literally all his ill-intent behind it.
Rowan turned back to him to find that his glare had managed to darken, and if she had to guess that sociopath in him was starting to climb out of the box she put it in.
"Okay, calm down."
"No," he said again, this time a little softer, but still stern because it was directed entirely at her.
"Wo…"
"No." This time it was a growl. A frustrated one because now they were in an argument and he didn't want her to win.
"I'm assuming Steve's agreed, otherwise they wouldn't be here and I'm going to assume he's going to be right out the door."
"Literally right on the other side," Steve said with a curt nod. He then held out a hand to Wo. "Come on, you can stand beside me."
Wo Fat's lip curled at Steve's hand and the offer. "The answer is no. I'm not leaving you alone with people I do not trust."
"You left me alone with Steven," she reminded him and that dark glare turned into a dry one.
"I didn't want to leave you with Steven, but someone wouldn't stop crying," he reminded her and yes, that was true. As much as she had fun traveling with her brother, she had been miserable the whole time, heartsick for Steven and Nahele and the life she left behind in Hawaii. "And besides, you can take him."
"And I can't take them?" she asked.
Wo Fat turned his eyes to them and then back to her. "They already got the drop on you once…"
"Yes, but neither of them of portal powers," she said. "And with you and Steve on the other side of the door, what exactly do you think is going to happen?"
"Rowan, I know you. If you really want to, you'll just open a portal under your feet and the three of you will vanish, and I'm not letting you do it…"
"Both you and Steve have the power to stop me, and I'm sure, between the two of you, you can learn to pull me back," she said with a wave of her hand. "Outside or I throw you out."
For a second hurt flashed over Wo Fat's features before the dark anger returned. She had hurt him, and she hadn't meant to, but he was honestly being ridiculous.
She turned away from him to the three men across from her and then carefully said: "Can you guys maybe wait outside… just for a second…"
Steve's eyebrows shot up to his hairline. "Are you shitting me right now?"
Rowan simply shot him a knowing look and he groaned.
"Come on, you two, out," he said. Both Trevor and Malcolm shot Steve a look, a look that clearly said something along the lines of: really? But he was being serious. "You wanna talk to her alone, she's gonna have to calm him down. Now come on."
"Seriously?" Trevor said. "No, no, he's talking about how he can't trust us? What about you two?"
Rowan turned around right away, hand out. Trevor went quiet again, his eyes narrowed in at her. "Don't. You Dare."
But she did. She definitely did.
She turned her palm to the sky, pulsed what was left of her power into the thought and a portal opened up under their feet. With a yelp Malcolm and Trevor both disappeared and then she closed the portal.
Steve sighed heavily. "Where did you drop them?"
"In the void," she said. "Come on, outside. Wo's feeling vulnerable and you make it worse."
"I am not!" Wo cried but she knew he was. She just wasn't about to bring it up again.
"Well pull them out of that portal, so I can deal with them, okay?" Steve snapped. "And hurry up. The quicker we get them on their way home, the better."
Steven left the office just as Rowan opened up the portal on the ceiling of the main hallway for Trevor and Malcolm to fall out of. Steve was already moving to collect them and help them up, with Danny right beside him, still grinning. Enjoying this way too much.
She turned back to Wo who was scowling at her. "I don't appreciate you announcing my feelings to Steven. I don't like talking about them, I don't need you talking about them for me."
Rowan walked around the desk as he lectured her. She got to him and reached up, clasping his face between her two hands. He didn't try to deflect, he simply let her pull him to her.
She said nothing, she just pulled him close and then pulled his forehead down to hers. For a moment they just stood there, foreheads bowed together, as she washed as much soothing calm as she could over his strings to calm them.
After a few seconds of silence he pulled out of her grip, sighed heavily and then said: "If it even looks, for even a moment, like Malcolm or Trevor are going to hurt you, I will storm through that door and kill them."
"Well you'll have to beat Steve," she said. "Please wait outside, I promise everything will be okay."
Wo carefully walked around her, joining Steven outside as he ushered Trevor and Malcolm into his office.
"What a downright, dirty… horrible…" Malcolm started but Rowan cut him off.
"Well if you listened to me, or better yet, hadn't tried to kidnap me, none of this would have happened."
Malcolm scowled at her but Trevor got in-between them. "Alright, that's enough, we're on a timeline, the Commander was clear, so I'm going to ask you questions, just say yes or no, and don't lie to me."
"Uh… okay?"
"Are you trapped here?"
"No."
"Are you sure? Cause you said both Steve and Oz can stop your powers."
"I'm seriously not trapped. Steve's not abusive… anymore…"
"That shouldn't be a sentence."
Rowan sighed. The problem was, on paper it looked very, very bad. "I know, but honestly, it's better now. He's not, he's not… it's hard to explain."
Trevor sighed. "Fine. So you're fine with him. Did he tell you why we were here?"
"Yeah, you were looking for me. I'm guessing you and Dad pulled me."
"Yep. It's a long story but yeah… that's the short of it," he said. "Do you know about… our… you?"
"Yep. Stillborn. No DNA match between you guys and me, not direct anyway. More like distant cousin."
"Great, so it seems we're all on the same page," he said. "Guess we just have one last question."
"Okay, shoot."
"Wanna come back to Victoria… meet Dad properly, meet mom… maybe get to know us a little better? We could trade stories… you know… about how this all happened…"
It was more than a tempting offer. It was everything she wanted and more. She glanced to the door where she could see Steve and Wo Fat standing there and she knew that there was no way she could convince them to let her go on her own.
"Okay, yea, sounds like fun," Rowan said and Trevor's smile widened. "So long as my whole family can come."
And just like that Trevor's smile faded. He glanced a the door just like Rowan had when he asked the question and realized that getting her to Victoria, at no point meant getting rid of the two crazily intimidating men glaring at them through the window.
Still he forced a fake smile onto his face as he said: "The whole family…. Grrreeeaaatttt…"
"Hey they're not all bad, Con is actually quite rational for a lethal assassin, and Nahele's completely normal…"
"Nahele?"
"Yeah, my kid. Nahele," she said as she headed for the door. She only had to pivot in their direction and they moved too, both scrambling with one another to get the door open. Steve ended up shoving Wo Fat away so he could get to her a worried sort of smile on her face.
Rowan just threw herself into her husband's arms and smile up at him until a more relieved smile donned his lips.
"Guess what? We're going to Victoria!"
Both Steve and Wo's smiles faded and together, completely in sync they said: "Greeeeaatt." Much like Trevor did.
It was clear they were about as excited to go as Trevor was excited to have them coming.
Well.
This was going to be an interesting trip.
