Chapter 397

The new McGarrett family came off the plain in Pearson airport, with one adopted brother beside them and the other waiting for them at the arrivals gate.

Wo had been the least happy about this trip and refused to be left behind. But he had been on a case in Nevada with the FBI and Kono's new task force, he wasn't supposed to be in Hawaii like Con was. So Rowan had to throw him back to Nevada where he then demanded time of, citing a family emergency.

If it weren't for Kono's vouching for him, and Steve confirming that his wife's family had an emergency in Canada, he might not have been allowed to go meet them. Actually, the only reason he didn't have a FBI handler on him was because Steve was there, and he had promised to return their asset to them when they were done in Canada.

Oh boy did Wo Fat hate being called an asset. And he hated that he was considered in Steve's custody even more.

He had hugged them all tightly, except for Malcom and Trevor who were both staring at him almost like they were expecting it. It just never came. Cause he chose to glare at them instead.

Nahele was probably the most excited of them all, only because Rowan kept talking about all the places she wanted to take him to.

The CN Tower, the ROM, the AGO, her dad's lab, Medieval Times. She was talking up everything and the kid had stars of excitement in his eyes.

Well, at least one of them was excited.

Steve could tell that Rowan was nervous about meeting her family properly, instead of pretending to be someone else. He knew Wo Fat was nervous because he was worried Rowan was going to replace him with this reality's version of her brother. Con was nervous because he didn't trust them not to steal her, or for things to not end in a kidnapping again.

And Steve was worried because, despite having literal criminals/killers as her brothers, her family saw him as the bad guy.

And it was his own fault.

But it wasn't just Wo Fat who had met them there. Someone else was there to meet them, or, well, was there to meet Malcolm and Trevor.

Trenton went to them first, hugging them both while eyeing Rowan and her family over their shoulders. It was clear as day that he wanted to come over, but it was most likely the three men that had him avoiding them.

But eventually he let Trevor go and they all approached the McGarrett family.

Rowan stood a little straighter and a sort of breathy chuckle escaped her lips. "Hi… uhm… dad… Is it okay if I call you…"

And he cut her off by hugging her. He just crushed her to him, tears escaping his own shockingly-blue eyes.

"I've been dreaming of you calling me dad since we lost you," he whispered to her.

Steve didn't know if he meant when he lost her as a baby or when Wo and Con took her out of Toronto during the Year of Deceit. Either way it was a clearly an emotional reunion of sorts.

Eventually she let him go, took a step back and then smiled at him

"Uhm, so you already know Oz and Con," she said and the two men nodded to him. "And uhm… Steven," she said and the man winced but nodded to him too. She then pulled Nahele to her side. "You haven't met this one yet, though. This is my son Nahele."

Trenton clearly had not been expecting that. His eyes turned to Nahele, who was a good head taller than Rowan now that his growth spurt had happened, and closer to Steve's height.

He glanced to Nahele and then to Steve clearly wondering if it was possible for the two of them to have had a kid in the five-almost-six years Rowan had been in this world.

"He's adopted," Steve said softly in explanation. "By both of us. Still our kid though. He's our kid, he's just… that's why he's older…"

Nahele winced, and Steve reached out to put a hand to his shoulder. He hadn't meant it to sound like Nahele wasn't his, he just figured he'd explain now before he got accused of baby trapping her.

Trenton offered him a hand to shake. "It's nice to meet you son," he said and Nahele took that offered hand.

Once they were done shaking hands, Trenton clapped his hands. "Do you want to check into your hotel and then meet me at the lab?"

And that was exactly what they decided to do.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

They had the exact same suite they had when they originally stayed there. Steve had to check them in, because they were pretty sure that Ro, Con and Wo were all banned from the hotel. All the hotel rooms were in his name anyway, so he checked in for the two rooms and then Rowan popped Con and Wo into their rooms.

Steve handed them their keys, and then Ro told them that they wanted to go to her dad's lab then and there.

Which meant they were all going, because at no point were the two brothers leaving Rowan alone with these people.

And no, they didn't trust Steve to make sure that nothing happened to their sister.

Steve was still pretty salty about that, they honestly should have trusted him more. He had taken care of Rowan rather well over the course of the last year, if he said so himself.

Except for that incident in Japan he hadn't really dropped the ball, and Wo Fat had dropped the ball on that one too, neither of them had known she had been grabbed, so if anything they should have been on the same level of trust here. But nope, neither brother trusted him on his own with her.

So they all walked to the lab, with Rowan leading, pointing out everything to Nahele. Like the ROM across the street from the hotel. Like Hart House, which had been her favourite place to hang out when she was visiting her dad. Bragging about the UofT campus and how pretty it was as she led him to the lab building.

They were all on the visitor's list, so they were allowed in. She took them to her dad's office which looked a lot like a dark academia sci-fi library filled with haphazard piles of papers, and thick books with worn crack and often gilded in gold spines, and his experiments scattered around. Trevor and Malcolm had been sitting in there with him and they all stood as they came in.

Trenton was more than excited to give Nahele a tour of his lab, stating that Con, Oz and Nahele's mom already knew the layout. Steve was left out of that tour offer, he assumed quite purposely, but he followed after Nahele, simply because Rowan was going with them, as Trenton wanted to show Rowan some of the new toys he had made.

And because Rowan was going with them, Wo and Con followed too.

When they got to the lab, Rowan showed Steve the room she had her vortex incident, that sort of looked familiar. Or more it felt familiar, as when he was there he thought it was a dream and it had been one huge ball of black void and red strings.

Her dad showed her the bracelets he had created which wrapped the user in a dampening field which was how Rowan had not sensed Trevor and Malcolm coming. It essentially muted their strings and made them unreadable.

He also explained that he had created a specific attachment that too created a dampening field that allowed the bullet to be fired out and go through her shield.

It could be fitted to any gun, but Malcolm had chosen to use a tranq gun because they were trying to take Rowan alive.

Trenton made the mistake of handing it to Wo, who handed the attachment to Con. As he was explaining that they should probably trust the sharp shooter with it… and he was the only one who probably wouldn't use it to try and kill her or incapacitate her, Con threw it to the ground and the crushed it under his heel.

They all turned to watch him stomp on it, which he did, until it was nothing but pieces.

"What the fuck did you do that for?" Malcolm cried and Trenton just stared at the pieces of his last experiment.

"You people shouldn't be creating things that could hurt her. If any of our enemies get a hold of this, she's fucked. So yeah. None of us get it. And you better not make any more of this shit, you got me hombre?"

Rowan rolled her eyes, but otherwise said nothing. Steve was just glad it wasn't him who had done it, though he had wanted to, because he was hoping to still get into Trenton's good-books. Didn't mean he wanted that attachment to exist.

He was going to tell Con to break it once they had left.

Steve could tell that Trenton was not impressed with that, in fact, Steve would guess he was pretty angry about it but he wasn't about to argue with the assassin so he let him it go.

Then he pointedly asked about everything else the two had stolen from his lab the last there were there and had Con say: "Yeah everything's good, I brought it with me if you wanna do some tweaking on them."

Trenton had probably been expecting some admission of guilt, or embarrassment at being called out, but neither brother care.

And that was solidified by Wo Fat saying: "I was actually going to get a new phone, could I get a new void proof case? Oh! And one for my girlfriend too?"

Trenton had been annoyed but both Steve and Nahele needed one as well, so he had agreed to make them, even for Steven.

After a while, when Rowan decided to give another demo of her powers for Trevor and Malcolm who had only seen them through a video cassette and the two times she used her powers on them, Trenton gestured for Steve to follow him.

Steve knew exactly what this was going to be and though he didn't want to go through what was going to be another interrogation, he knew it would be better to get it over with.

He let the older man lead him back to his office, and then let him close the door behind him with a definite click. Trenton clearly wanted to play at being protective-stern-dad meeting the boyfriend for the first time.

It was a little late for that but Steve was just going to let him have it.

"You knew," Trenton said once they were both sitting down in their respective chairs. Her dad in his office chair behind his desk, Steve in the smaller chair across the desk from him. "Don't bother lying to me. You knew the second I said her name, you knew who I was and what I was there for."

Steve lowered his eyes.

"You had to, because I got back from Hawaii with a voicemail on my inbox from you, dated long before I showed up on the island, asking about people travelling through the void. You knew exactly what she was. Who I was. I know you did."

Steve nodded sharply

"I knew when I met you on the boat," he whispered. "I knew what you were looking for, what you were really looking for."

"And you sent me away before I could take her from you."

"I did, yes."

"That's one hell of a red flag, Commander," Trenton said. "There's a file full of red flags, and now you've married her…"

"How exactly did you get a hold of that file? I locked it down…"

"Malcolm got it, pulled in a favour to look at it," Trenton said and Steve nodded. Yeah when he figured out who the leak was they were going to get an earful from him. It was probably the Governor, she was the only one who could have approved the unsealing of that file. Or Catherine using her old access—he was going to have to revoke that when he got back to Hawaii.

Steve swallowed around the anger rising up in his throat. He had no right to be angry, because he shouldn't have kept them from her.

"I… I've had a distinct problem sharing her…"

"You've been abusing her, that's what you've been doing," he snapped. "And you can tell me all about how you've changed, but I don't believe you. You've got her tied up in your lies and your manipulation, but we both know if she starts acting out you'll lock her down again. Where do you plan to put her to keep her from jumping hmm? Or are you going to rely on the fact that your own powers can keep her from jumping?"

Steve glared at him. He knew it was coming but it still hurt to hear that these people thought he'd trap Rowan with him. That he didn't really love her, and that she didn't really love him back.

"When you showed up on Hawaii, I was not in a good place. She had just survived a near-death shooting, she shot down my advances and gotten way too buddy-buddy with my nemesis, who you can see is still in her life. I was an absolute mess trying to control emotions that… well you've seen those damn strings!" he cried and Trenton blinked his eyes. "I knew if you found her, you'd take her back to Canada, and… Wo… he'd have gone with her and between the two of you I never would have seen her again and I just… I went about it the wrong way. And yes, fine, our first attempt at a relationship was horrible and I was… I was horrible, but I've established what was wrong, which was me, and I've fixed it."

"I don't believe you. A manipulator cannot change his stripes."

"Okay, you know what," Steve said, jumping to his feet. "You can think what you want, but I love Rowan. And I know she loves me, and I know I didn't force her to do that. You can ask her if you want, you can asked her what she thinks, what Wo Fat thinks, but I know she's with me because she wants to be. And as for her powers, sure I can stop them, but Wo Fat can undo everything I do to her, so it doesn't matter if I try to stop her, with him she can get away from me and I can tell you he's coded a whole app to make sure that she can get away from me if I get controlling again, it's called the Captain America Contingency Plan, so there's no way for me to keep if she doesn't want me to."

The two stared at each other and then Steve cleared his throat. "I'm sorry I deported you. I should have just let her meet you, but I was afraid, and… it doesn't matter. I just shouldn't have done it. But she's not your daughter. Not really. She's just a different version from a different reality. And maybe you guys are different, but the family she has there were horrible to her. I mean, you think I'm abusive, all her ticks, all her traumas, they're from her family not me. And neither I or her brother are going to let a second version do the same."

And then he whirled around and left him there.

He needed to hug his wife, to hold her close to shake the fear and the anger out of himself. And when Steve got to the lab he found that Rowan was ready for that hug, having sensed the need in his strings.

He wanted to go home, but he couldn't end this trip early on her like that. So he held her, and prayed that when she decided to go home, she'd be coming with him.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Roselyn was excited to hear from her son.

He had gone off to Toronto so long ago to spend some time with his father. Logically, it would make sense that Trevor would want to spend time with his father. Yes the two had been strained for a very long time, but they had since managed to patch up their relationship, and they were usually in some form of contact now.

But illogically, Trevor had always been closer to Roselyn and she very much didn't want her baby-boy that far from her.

He was a grown adult though, so while she did voice her displeasure with his continued distance this summer, especially after he had spent almost half a year in WITSEC, she didn't flat out order him to come back. She just told him that she wished he was home, every time he called her. Classic mother guilt-tripping.

Just because she was a shrink who taught her patients who to grey-rock parents who did this didn't mean she wasn't above doing it herself. Besides, Trevor knew how to grey-rock, she had taught him.

Hence why it hadn't worked so far.

But when he called that day, she figured she'd try again. Just voice her displeasure; that she missed him; that he had clearly spent enough time with his father, and it was time to come home.

As per usual, he completely ignored her. Gave her a quick: "Yeah okay, sure mom," and then launched right into what he was clearly more excited about.

"I found her mom, I found her!"

Right away Roselyn froze, because she knew exactly who it was that her son was talking about.

He wouldn't stop bring that stupid girl up.

He was convinced, and she blamed Trenton for this, that this girl was their Rowan, just from a different reality and she wasn't. She refused to believe that Trenton's one and only working experiment had pulled her dead daughter here. She just refused.

She half listened to Trevor explaining how his father had sent him to Hawaii on some fly-by-night not-officially-on-the-books op that Malcolm was helping with to get her. They had actually tried to kidnap her but her brothers and her new husband had stopped them.

Which would make sense, because if Rowan was Wick then her brothers were criminals, so it would make sense that they would come at them violently to get her back.

But apparently, they had talked it all out, they were all good now and Rowan was in Toronto with Trevor and his dad.

Her whole family. Her, her brothers, her husband and her adopted son.

So that kid she had been fostering and missing, she had gone back to Hawaii and adopted him.

She wondered how Jamie had allowed that to happen. The way Rowan had talked about him, she would have thought that the man, who had been clearly unhealthily obsessed with her, would not have allowed her to return to Hawaii. Not without arresting her, or making him marry her himself.

The fact that she managed to get back to Hawaii to adopt that boy and marry someone else entirely was shocking.

Jamie had been in law enforcement, maybe he had died.

But none of that mattered to her because Wick was no longer one of her clients and definitely not her daughter.

"Trevor!" she said sharply ending his tirade about Rowan and her family and all they were planning to do together in Toronto with Trenton and Trevor. "I have already told you, I don't care what you say or whose life you swear on, that woman is not my daughter and I will not continue to listen to stories about her."

"But mom…"

"No," she said again, trying to mask the little waver in her voice. "The conversation is done, unless you have something else to tell me about."

"I mean… not really… but…"

"Then we're done. Good-bye Trevor," she said and then she quickly hung up before he could tell that she was crying.

And she was crying and for the life of her she couldn't figure out why. She only knew that she could get herself to stop.
