Chapter 400

Later that night after everyone got to rest, the McGarrett Family showed up at the Peirce's family home. Rowan had dressed up for the occasion and had made everyone else dress up with her. She was in this silver sparkly dress. It was long sleeved and turtle necked. She had her hair braided up in a crown and she was wearing the golden seashell out for everyone to see.

She had Steve in dress pants and a light blue dress shirt. It was warm so he hadn't done up the buttons that far, and had rolled up his sleeves. It was the way Rowan liked it, and she kept smiling appreciatively at him.

Nahele too was in fancy black dress pants but his button up shirt was green.

Wo Fat was in another suit, all grey with a black dress shirt. Steve kept asking if he was hot, and he probably was but he refused to take the jacket off. He kept fiddling with the buttons on his cuffs and his fancy watch, Steve kept trying to help him and it was making Wo Fat angry. Eventually Rowan had come over and told him that fiddling with his suit like that was a nervous tick and to leave him alone.

Steve had never known that, but looking back on all his interactions with him it made sense. He couldn't believe he missed that.

But try as she might, Rowan couldn't get Con into anything she deemed appropriate. He was in his standard black jeans, a white shirt and his leather jacket.

She kept saying that she knew he had other clothes, but Con wouldn't change. Said he needed this outfit, said that he might need to go to war at any point in time and he needed to be in his armour ready to go, just like Wo Fat was.

Rowan had said, over and over, that that was ridiculous, but he wouldn't relent, so out of the five on that doorstep, Con was the least dressed up.

Rowan had purchased a bottle of wine… or at least, Steve hoped she had, and when they got there she had made them all promise to behave. Directing that comment mostly at her two brothers, before ringing the doorbell.

When the door was answered there was a flurry of hellos and welcomes. Rowan, Nahele and Steve were all hugged by Roselyn. She even offered one up to Wo Fat and Con, both of which turned her down.

"Oh, don't worry about them, they're not huggers," she had told her but her mom had simply narrowed her eyes at them.

"From what I remember, one of your brothers was complaining about how cuddly you were with the other… mostly because he was jealous since he was the one you used to cuddle with before he came along."

Wait… what? Which brother was complaining about that?

"Rowan," Wo Fat growled and then shot a glare at Roselyn. "That was not my problem. I was angry because I had a rule about him getting romantically involved with her and I thought they were too close."

So that was Wo Fat.

Wo Fat was complaining about Ro cuddling with Con too much, cause she usually cuddled with him.

Steve shot him a bit of a smirk, and then covered up a few of the chuckles that escaped him with some well-timed coughs. But Wo Fat knew exactly what Steve was doing.

"I swear to god if you don't stop laughing, I'm going to shoot you," he growled and Rowan turned around right away.

"I told you not to come armed!" she hissed. Wo Fat froze like a deer in the headlights then he suddenly put on a smug sort of smile that he pointed at her.

"I'm not armed. You can check," he said but Rowan was not impressed in the least.

She merely turned to Con with a dry look. "Am I to assume that he doesn't have the weapons because you do?"

"I don't go anywhere without a weapon," Con said, before during a dry glare onto Roselyn. "I don't trust people."

The people clearly being her.

Roselyn just stared at them blankly before sighing. "Just… come on in."

Rowan winced at Roselyn. "I'll do my best to control them," she whispered.

That was something that both men would hate to hear, but they didn't move to argue with her. So that was remarkable. That they stayed silent.

Once they were all inside and they had their shoes off, Roselyn began to usher them towards the dinning table. Clearly she was aiming to impress because she had all her best of everything out.

Her best china, her best glasses, all her best decoration pieces, which were mostly just awards she wanted to show off.

Trevor and Trenton were already there. They were seated and clearly waiting on them. They both smiled when the family was ushered in.

Both Trevor and Trenton had dressed up as well. Both in black dress pants and dress shirts. Trevor was in a light blue button up, similar to Steve's, while Trenton was in a brown polo.

Rowan went to each one to hug them while the rest stayed back.

"Alright, why don't you guys sit down? Dinner is almost ready…"

"Oh! Can I help?" Rowan asked, not moving to sit down with the others but instead trailing after Roselyn.

Roselyn was surprised for all of two seconds before a smile dawned on her lips. "Yes, that would be nice."

Rowan practically bounced with excitement, then without a second thought she left the four men she had come with to join her mom in the kitchen.

That left them staring at Trevor and Trenton, almost unsurely. They were definitely feeling awkward about the whole situation.

"Well, come on, boys, sit," Trenton said gesturing to the table. Steve exchanged glances with Wo and Con, who were distrusting of everything, and then to Nahele, who had picked up on the awkwardness of everything. Now that Rowan wasn't in the room with him, he had moved closer to Steve for that familiar comfort that he usually got from his mom.

Steve knew that he was going to have to lead the charge.

He moved first, to sit down at the table, He very wisely left a table space for Rowan between him and Wo Fat. They had a massive dining room table, which meant that there were four spots on either side and two heads of the table.

On Steve's side there was Wo, him, and Nahele, then of course the space for Rowan. Trevor and Con were on the other side, with two spaces in between them, while Trenton was at one end of the table and the other was designated for Roselyn.

Steve figuring separating the two brothers would be the best bet. Less of a chance of Wo Fat sneaking a gun off of Con.

"Is Malcolm joining us?" Steve asked. As he figured that was who one of the other seats were for.

Trevor shook his head. "I figured inviting him to a dinner with two wanted criminals would be a poor choice."

Con nodded. "That would be a lot of unnecessary drama," he said. "We'd have to hide a body… and deal with witnesses."

Trevor turned to Con clearly shocked by where this had gone, but Steve wasn't. "He's kidding," he lied and Trevor visibly relaxed. He just had to shoot Con a glare to keep him from correcting him. Normally it didn't work, Wo would signal something and Con would miss it entirely. This time, however, Con got it.

He scowled, but didn't contradict him so that was good.

"So uh… what do you boys have planned for tomorrow?"

"She wants to go to the Empress," Wo Fat said. "There this high tea thing…"

"We know all about the Empress and it's High Tea," Trenton told them and Wo nodded. "Are all of you going?"

"Uh… yes," Con said his eyes narrowed in Trenton's direction. "Why?"

"Just wondering, is all," Trenton said with a shrug. "It's an expensive experience…"

"Rowan can afford it," Con said right away and then yelped. His wide eyes were pointed right at Wo Fat who was glaring dangerously at his brother. He had clearly kicked him under the table.

He very obviously didn't want Trenton or Trevor to know that Rowan was rich. Like Steve, he must have been worried that they'd want to leech off of her.

It was obvious what had happened, and Trenton and Trevor seemed to be either surprised or offended by the brother's reaction. Luckily they got distracted by Rowan and Roselyn coming back, each carrying a dish to lay out on the table.

Dinner was finally ready.

It took a couple of minutes for the two women to bring all the dishes and drinks out and set them out where they needed to be.

As soon as things were ready, Steve waved Rowan over to her spot and then for a good long while they were all busy chatting about the food, asking dishes to be passed, and complimenting the chef. Then of course they were eating.

Things were going really well.

There was small talk about Steve and Rowan and how and when they got married. About when they adopted Nahele. They even managed to talk about what was going on with the criminal brothers and were flabbergasted to hear that Wo Fat had gone straight.

Thing immediately went down hill the second Roselyn focused in on Rowan and said: "I'm so glad you got over Jamie. Steven seems to be a better match for you."

Rowan went stock still, and then reached for the red wine to take a long sip while Steve, Wo and Con all turned to her.

Steve huffed. "You talked to your mom about me?" Rowan winced up to him and he scowled. "Is there anyone you didn't tell all about me?"

"She was my shrink," Rowan hissed back. "I was supposed to tell her about those things so she could help me get over them."

"You mean me," Steve snapped. "You wanted her to help you get over me." He shot her a dark glare. "How did that work out for you?"

"Well, I married you Steven, so not well."

Roselyn found herself frowning. She wasn't following what was happening. Or, more aptly, she was following, she just didn't want to believe it.

"I'm confused."

"I'm Jamie," Steve said. "I don't know why she always goes with Jamie…"

"Your middle name is James," Wo and Con said and Steve turned back to Rowan surprised who was sinking down in her chair as if to avoid their glares.

"You gave my middle name a nickname?"

"That's what we said," Con said and Rowan sighed.

"I unno, it just stuck," she whispered. "And again, she was my therapist, she was the person I was supposed to talk to about this stuff…"

"I thought you said he married someone else?"

Rowan's head jerked in Wo Fat's direction. "He made that up."

Roselyn turned to Steve looking him up and down with new eyes. "You told me some really terrifying stories, Ro," she said and then she turned a glare onto her older brother who started to squirm. "I find it hard to believe that either of you let him marry her, especially you Oz. The over-protective older brother who made it his second job saving her from him."

"You're right, but Ro loves him and is happier with him, and I saw the changes with my own two eyes. So… I let it happen."

"Besides, if I get bad again he has the Captain America Contingency plan, which will get Rowan away from me even if I try to arrest her or put her on the no fly list. So she's safe, don't worry."

"You need a contingency plan to get away from your husband if things go south?" Roselyn echoed. "I fail to see how you can say that and not see that you are clearly in an abusive relationship."

Steve groaned and Rowan winced. "It's not that bad anymore, honest."

"Anymore," Roselyn snarled, her glare now on Steve. "There shouldn't be an anymore." She then turned on Trenton. "Honestly, Trent, if you were so sure of who she was, why didn't you do something?"

"Well, that's easy, Rosie. Before I could locate her, he deported me. And Trevor."

Steve groaned again, dear god it was just pile on Steve day. He glanced to the hot angry eyes of Roselyn Pierce and realized that he was going to have to explain himself.

"I… I didn't want him taking her off the island… and… I mean… she had told me so many stories about how awful you people were…"

"No, you just didn't want to share," Rowan snapped and Steve winced. It was true, but did she have to point it out then and there?

"And I didn't was to share. The point was, I wasn't doing well with our complicated emotions at that point and I just… I made a series of bad choices. I have apologized them, both to Rowan and to Wo Fat for the distress I put them through and I proved that I could change and treat her better. Which I do."

"It's true he does."

They were quiet a moment before Roselyn calmly and rationally said two words: "Contingency. Plan," in a way meant to bring them back to the original point of concern. In a condescending way to highlight just how fucked up it was.

And it was fucked up. His past with her would forever be a point of shame for him.

"The contingency is in place not because I'm still that bad, but for Wo and Rowan's piece of mind. Okay?" he cried, he then turned to the others with a plaintive look on is face. "Can we move on now? Please?"

Rowan put her head in her hands "The fact that we have to tell everyone about this, and justify everything, is starting to get embarrassing."

Embarrassing for her? What about him?

"He was the one that had to get… aggressive," Steve cried, gesturing to Wo Fat.

"I had no choice. You were so bad I had to get the governor involved, for fucksake!" Wo cried.

"I'm sorry, the Governor of Hawaii had to get involve in their relationship?" Trevor echoed. "Wow!"

"Okay…"

"He was in a bad place and acting out…" Rowan said jumping to Steve's defence.

"Yeah, and using his immunity and means to harass you," Wo grumbled.

Roselyn raised her hands and they all fell quiet. "Barring some horrible choices in his past, he claims to be better now. I have to somewhat believe that, because I doubt your brothers would have allowed you to marry him if it weren't true. But I'm asking you now. Is it true? Are you happy and safe in this relationship?"

"Why do you care?" Rowan countered. "I'm not your patient anymore. You don't need to worry about me."

"Well of course I do, I'm your mother."

Rowan straightened and so did Roselyn. Together their eyes widened and Steve got to see exactly where it was that Rowan got her mannerisms from.

Roselyn was the first to recover. "Of course I'm not your real mother, but I… I mean I'm a version of one aren't I?" she cried. "And as everyone likes to remind me your version of me was… how did you put it?"

She turned to Wo who lifted his glass and said: "A complete and utter bitch."

"Yes that," she said turning back to Rowan. "Is it so wrong of me to want to prove that I can be better? Hmm? That you have someone in a motherly role that can care?"

"She does have that," Steve snapped. "I mean, she's my mother, but she's in a motherly role for Rowan and she cares…"

"But it's not the same," Rowan whispered. "I want my mother to care. And let's be honest, if this all went down in my world, she'd've sided with you, Steven."

Steve turned to her, completely disgusted. "Are you fucking kidding me?" he hissed. "Really?"

"See, now, don't you want someone other than your brothers to side with you if he were to do it again?" she asked. "Now, I may not be as violent as your brothers, but I can be just as supportive."

"That would be nice," Rowan whispered.

"Then it's settled then. We'll… we'll have a motherly relationship and I'll do better then your real mom."

Steve glanced to Rowan who was staring hard at the plate in front of her. Her cheeks were red but not from embarrassment. She was trying not to cry.

This was no doubt a chance to get what she never had in her world. A loving family.

Oh yes the family she had made in Hawaii loved her, and that was enough, but it was different to finally get the love from your bio-family especially after craving it for so long. Steve just had to be sure that it worked out that way, and if it looked like it wasn't, he'd have to step up and protect her from it.

Trevor cleared his throat, ready to move on to the next topic. "Well, now that's over and settled with, why don't you tell me what you're wearing to the red carpet? I thought it would be cute if we match."

At that all eyes turned to Rowan who had gone bright red and wide eyed again.

"Ro, what's he talking about?" Steve asked and his wife winced.

"I… well… Trevor wrote a screen play for a musical and they're turning it into a movie and… well… the premiere is at the next of next month and… uhm… well… they want me there… you know cause I wrote the music…"

Trevor was immediately beaming. "It's been really fun working with directors and all that, but all of it was remote cause I was in WitSec at that point. So thanks for stealing that and handing that in, Ro. Not gonna lie I was pretty pissed off when it got stolen…"

"I stole it actually," Wo said raising a hand. "I handed it off to her once you were safe in WitSec, I guessed she had the music for it and I was right, she had almost all of it already written."

"Well thanks," Trevor said and then turned back to Rowan. "So what are you going to wear?"

"I uhm… well I wasn't going to go…"

And that was why Steven hadn't heard about it.

"What? Why not?" Nahele cried. "Mom this is a big deal!"

"Yes I know, but they don't want me until September and… Nahele, you start school like a two days after I leave and Steve wouldn't be able to get time off, and well… I didn't want to go without you guys."

"Why didn't you tell us about it?" Steve asked. "We could have supported you, we'd've been super proud. I'm starting to get annoyed that you won't let us share in your success. We just want to cheer you on…"

"It's not that," Rowan cried. "It's just that I knew if I told you about the event, you'd ask why I'm not going. And when I told you guys you'd tell me that it was stupid…" "—It is stupid." "…and that you'd want me to go or you'd feel bad for making me stay back and I didn't want you guys to feel bad."

Nahele and Steve exchanged glances but it was Nahele that said: "I think I speak for both of us when I say we want you to go to this red carpet event."

"But…"

"No. No buts. This is a big deal, and you deserve all the attention and praise for what I'm guessing is a wonderful musical. I mean it has to be if it got an offer for film right off the bat. So you're going. We're not letting you stay back because of us."

"What he said," Nahele said. "And besides, I want to see you on TV on that red carpet. I wanna brag to all my friends that you're my mom and that's you on the TV because you wrote a freaking musical! So you're going, let me have those bragging rights."

Rowan looked highly uncomfortable at that point. It was clear she didn't want to go.

"The Event's only going to be what? A couple of days?" he asked but when Rowan just stared at him with that pained look he shook his head. "No? Okay… a week? Two weeks?"

"A month…"

"A month?" Steve echoed.

"It's not just red carpet. It's a whole press tour kind of thing, and they want me to film some bonus interview type stuff for the DVD releases. They would only need me for the last month of it."

Realization dawned on him. "Oh. Oh, I see, this isn't about you not wanting to go without us, this is about you not trusting me to take care of Nahele for a month."

Rowan scowled at him. "You're never home, you're always at work." Steve rolled his eyes. Not this again. "And we both know there's no point of asking you to slow down at work because you never say no to a case."

"I… the governor! You know the governor doesn't like me taking time off… especially since I left for a month and got married…" Rowan was refusing to look at him now. "Fine, look, listen, you're going. Nahele and I will be fine. Between the Five-0's and Con…"

"Whoa, wait a second? ME?" Con asked. He had been shoveling food into his face during this whole conversation, probably because he didn't care that much about it. "Hold on a second… if I stay in Hawaii who's going to take care of Ro?"

"Uh… me?" Rowan asked. "I am fully capable of taking care of myself… thank you very much."

But Con shook his head. "No, no, no, that's not happening. I'm not leaving you on your own, you're never good by yourself…."

"She's got portal powers," Steve snapped. "If she's in trouble she's popping one of us in, or to one of us. What are you really worried about?"

He had Con there, and they all knew it"Yeah, Steve's the one you have to worry about!"

Con threw his fork and knife down. "No. No I am not babysitting the Super SEAL, I'm not doing it and you can't make me," he snapped. "I'll watch the kid, but I'm not dealing with the Super SEAL. I'm not."

Now that outburst got Roselyn's attention she was now, she glanced from him to Rowan and then to Steve before turning back to Con. "You seem to thoroughly resent Steven… why do you think that is?"

Con froze, he turned to Roselyn as if he didn't understand where the question had come from. But Steve seconded the question.

Trenton, however, was not letting this dinner get further derailed. "Now, Rosie, no shrinking the guests," he chided. "Especially the one who's armed."

Roselyn shot him a scowl but let the question slide.

The conversation changed right away onto the musical and what it was about. Rowan was quick to tell them that it was a fantastical romanticization of P.T. Barnum's climb to fame. Rowan clearly thought that the topic had been dropped but it hadn't been. Not really.

"So.. we never settled on what you were going to wear," Trevor said.

And there it was. The topic was back.

Rowan sighed. She glanced to Steve and realized that she was not getting out of it.

"I have a midnight blue dress with Swarovski crystals…"

"That dress is wildly out of date," Wo Fat said.

"How do you know?" Trevor asked.

"He bought it for her," Steve answered and Wo Fat nodded.

"Right, fine, then the purple one I wore in Venice…"

"No, it's also out of date. You can't go to a Hollywood press event in clothes that are out of date. Face it, my dear you're going to have to buy a dress."

Rowan groaned but Roselyn perked up.

"We could go shopping," she cried clapping her hands happily. "All of us, you know, to make sure Trevor matches!"

Rowan sort of smiles. "That sounds like that might be fun!"

Even though the thought of having to go dress shopping with her mom and Trevor, Steve found that he was excited too. Rowan had finally caved.

His wife was going to be walking a red-carpet event. He was going to brag about it non-stop, just like he was sure Nahele would too.

He was going to be so proud, in fact he was itching to pull out his phone to text Danny to start bragging now. Tomorrow he'd draw straws with Wo Fat and Con to see who had to go dress shopping, because he knew there was no way she'd go by herself.

But right now, he was going to enjoy the dinner and worry about everything else tomorrow.
