Chapter 402

Con had very kindly texted Steven and Wo when he and Rowan were officially back on Victoria. And then they got another bomb. Rowan wasn't going to meet them back at the hotel. No, Rowan had gone with her mother and Trevor to a church for something Con was calling choir practice despite the fact that they were not a church choir.

Con couldn't quite tell them what was going on, just that they had to come to the church themselves. Though Steve was certain that was more because Con was tired of babysitting Rowan and wanted them to switch off.

Well, that was perfectly fine with Steve. He had been worrying about his wife on her own with Con the whole day.

He was having irrational worries about her and him running off, add in the fact that they ended up in a Church and it was like his worst nightmares had come true. He couldn't bring up his worries though, unfounded or not, because he knew no one would believe him.

They'd say things like: Con was her brother, Rowan had married him, it was stupid to think that she'd leave him for her brother.

Her very handsome Latin brother, who knew everything about her. Who knew more about her than Steve and loved to flaunt that knowledge in his face.

And the whole, legally she can't be married to someone else when she's married to him, wasn't a good excuse either. Neither Rowan nor Con cared about rules or laws, they'd break them no problem if they really felt like they had to, or really wanted to.

So he happily went to the church that Con said he and Rowan were at, very glad that he didn't have to stop at the Empress to drop off Nahele or Wo.

Luckily both of them wanted to see Rowan as well.

So they went to the church and let themselves in. They tried to be as quiet as possible as the group was in the midst of a song, a song they were singing a cappella.

A Christmas song funnily enough.

The second they opened the door, Rowan turned around. She was sitting in a pew at the back with Con, shoulder to shoulder, but the second she sensed him she turned around. She smiled when she saw them and then she was up and getting out of the pew to get to them.

Steve was itching for his own hug, but Nahele was first, pushing past him to get to her.

"Hey mom did you pick a dress?" Nahele asked as Rowan pulled him in for a hug.

"I did."

"Was it the pink one Uncle Con sent us? Cause we all liked that one the best," Nahele said.

"Yes I did, and your Uncle Con took a few pictures of me in it, so you should ask him to see it," she said. "How was the whales? Good?"

"Oh mom, it was so cool!" Nahele cried and then winced and lowered his voice as to not disturb the singers. "We saw so many killer whales! They came right up to the boat and everything!"

"Did you take pictures?"

"So many! I can show you when we sit down?" he offered and she nodded.

She hugged Wo Fat next, who then let her go and moved to Con, smacking his shoulder. "You couldn't have sent me the picture? I would have loved to see her in the dress."

Con rubbed his arm. "I thought that it would be better for me to show you all in person, or… better yet… she'd give us a fashion reveal at the hotel. She bought two dresses you know."

"Two?" Steve echoed. He had finally got his hug. Now that he had his wife wrapped up in his arms, he wasn't going to let her go. This hug was going to be a long one and he didn't even care, because he missed her, and he wanted her near him. So, he was going to hold onto her until she told him to stop.

"Yeah, one's for you," she said, shooting a smile up at him and Seve found his own smile creeping up on his face.

Oh boy, he loved it when she bought dressed for him. He was going to love it, he knew it. Was probably going to enjoy taking it off of her more.

"Ugh, get your mind out of the gutter McGarrett, we're in a church, goddamnit!" Con hissed and then he winced. "Ay dios mio! Lo siento!"

He made the sign of the cross at least three times, taking time to press a kiss to a medallion around his neck between each cross he made. Steve had never noticed Con wearing a medallion around his neck before, and suddenly e was wondering if that was another secret only he and Ro knew. Or had they looped in Wo too? Did everyone but Steve know?

Still, who would have thought that the wise cracking assassin was religious?

"Why are you making the sign of the cross like that?" Rowan snapped. Immediately Steve perked up. Oh, so this was just a regular old secret-secret. They were all finding out about it together. "You're not in the good books with the old man upstairs."

"You don't know that!"

"You kill people for a living."

"So? I still do good things. That shit balanced out," he said and then he winced and once again gave the sign of the cross. "Sorry!"

"Dude, you killed a bunch of nuns. There's no way you're balancing that out!"

Con simply frowned at her. "You don't know that. You don't commune with the lord! And I think, after everything you and your family have put me through, yeah, I'm balanced out. I do a lot of good in your name!"

He did a lot of bad in it too.

But Steve could see that there would be no arguing about it.

They all sat down in their pew as the song ended and Steve saw that the choir was made up of a few people they knew, such as Sarah and Trevor with Roselyn clearly in charge of the whole situation.

"So this isn't a church choir?"

"No, it's an a cappella group," Rowan whispered. "My mom runs it, and it's competitive. I was their soloist in my world."

Of course she was, with a voice like hers here was no way she wasn't the soloist. It must suck to sit there and not be able to participate.

"Do you know this song too?" Nahele asked as they started up again.

Rowan nodded and began to sing along, her voice mixing in perfect harmony with the group's. Like she just knew where her voice needed to go to fill whatever musical gap there was.

She sang until they stopped, and they took a little break.

Steve noticed right away that there was one child in the group. The little girl had blonde hair, and seemed to stick mostly around Sarah and Trevor. Steve had a feeling he knew exactly who she was but he asked anyway.

"Who's the little girl?"

"Oh that's Evolet. In my world she's my god child. She's Trevor's here," Rowan said.

He'd be stupid not to hear the sadness in her voice.

"Maybe we should go," he said to her. "It's nice to go on a trip down memory lane but it's something completely different when you're watching from the outside and can't go in."

Rowan smiled at him in that sad way of hers. "It's alright. I'm alright."

"I know, but you don't always have to be strong, you know. I know this has to be hard."

"Yes," Wo Fat said, leaning in past Nahele. Clearly they had all been listening in on their conversation. "Everything is so similar to the world you left behind, but… there's no place for you in it. It would make sense for you to be sad about your lack of place in it."

"Guys… honest… it's fine…" she said, but it wasn't true, clearly. Her eyes had gotten watery.

See, now Steve really wanted to get her out of here.

But then the door to the church banged open. Much like the way it had when Steve had opened it, except this person didn't care about the noise it made or how they were disrupting the practice.

Two people walked in and down the aisle. The second the choir people noticed them the singing stopped and Trevor and Sarah straightened. Sarah just had to glance at Trevor and right away he reached out for Evolet and disappeared into the back.

Rowan sat a little straighter too. Clearly she recognized the two people walking towards the front alter where the group was practicing.

The man was dressed as if he were going golfing, with blond hair. The woman with him was in a small white dress, a mile long high heels. Her hair was also blonde and Steve guessed was dating him. Honestly it looked like they were coming straight from a country club.

"No pointing in hiding my own daughter from me, Sarah," the man said. "Might as well let her get to know me."

"Is that the Howard guy?" Steve asked and Rowan nodded. Oh that wasn't good.

"I said we could talk about that… and then you got your lawyers involved…"

"It's called parental alienation, and it means, if you want to make this a court thing, that I'll win full custody. Then I'll make sure you never see my daughter again."

"She'd be better off with us anyway," the woman with him said. "We'd provide her a much more fulfilling life then you could."

"Okay, we both know that they only reason either of you want anything to do with Ev, is because your precious bride can't have kids."

Steve didn't need to see their faces to know that they were glaring at Sarah.

But then the blonde turned to the man and said: "We've got to do something about that name. Give her something better when she's ours…"

Rowan was suddenly on her feet. Steve tried to stop her but it didn't work. She got over him and into the aisle before he could stop her.

She stormed all the way down to where they were waiting, and then just stood their glaring at the back of their heads.

"Okay, you know what Howard, leave," Roselyn ordered but Howard and his wife didn't move. "No one wants you here and honestly you're causing a scene." When Howard didn't leave Roselyn crossed her arms and said: "I can psychoanalyze you from twenty paces, if you don't want me to embarrass the two of you right here right now in front of all of these nice and gossipy people, you'll leave."

Wow. Well, Steve could see where Rowan got her tenacity from. She even threatened people exactly like her mother.

But Howard had realized he was beaten, or at the least, not the top dog here. So he just scoffed at them.

"You're only delaying the inevitable Sarah. We're going to win this. You might as well give up now."

With his last poisonous statement hurled at them Howard turned around and found Rowan standing behind him. The man actually jolted, which was fair, because the Ice Queen mask was on her face and he clearly hadn't realized that she was behind them.

"Who the hell are you?" he snapped.

Right away both Con and Wo Fat were standing up. "Move," Con ordered but Steve stood, not to move but to block the path out.

"No, we are not having an altercation in a church!" he hissed but when that didn't work, Con hopped the back of the pew and then darted out into the aisle. Wo Fat and Steve watched him go and then that was Wo Fat hopping over the back of the same pew to follow his brother.

While those two made their way to Rowan, she was still facing off with Howard. Rowan looked him up and down before pinning him with a glittering smile.

"Merely an interested party."

"Interested in what?"

"Everything," Rowan whispered. "All your dirty little secrets. All your lies… and dirty… dealings…"

"What are you talking about?"

"Well for starters, you're not really this tall. Inserts right? You're not 6 foot Howie. And you never will be."

He actually backed away from her and Rowan's eyes settled on his wife.

"And you're not infertile. You're a coke head who doesn't want to give up her habit."

Rowan then swiped at her nose, and his wife's hand flew to her face.

"I don't care if we're in a church," Rowan finished. "I broke your jaw once, Howie, I'll do it again. Now clear off."

His eyes narrowed at her. Also fair because she hadn't broken his jaw in this reality. He didn't say anything about that though, because by that point but Con and Wo Fat had made it to Rowan and were now standing behind her, shoulder by shoulder glaring at him over Rowan's head.

Rowan continued to glare at the two people in front of her. Eventually they skirted around her and dashed down the aisle. Her ice queen eyes glaring daggers into their back until they were finally gone.

As soon as the door closed behind them Rowan leant back, her shoulder touching Wo Fat's arm. "If I tell you who his dad is and what company they own, do you think you can dig up some dirt?"

"Of course," he said softly and she nodded.

Steve shook his head. Even in a church Rowan couldn't help but be bad.

With that done Rowan turned around, hands on her hips and said: "Right, someone tell me what's going on right now."

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Rowan, with her head in her hands, just stood there, having heard everything that Trevor and Sarah had to say.

The practice was finished. It ended the second Rowan Ice Queened Howard Czernyc out of the church. It took them twenty minutes to explain what happened and it included a lot of back story that wasn't necessary.

Nahele had done them all a solid and taken Evolet to the back to one of the meeting rooms the church had to keep her entertained while the adults talked.

"Right. So. Let's see if I got this. You told him the truth about being Evolet's dad, because she needed a donor for her condition. He was a match, which meant you weren't lying and… now he wants to take her?" she asked. "Like, he wants a ready-made kid. And he's not backing down and getting fancy lawyers involved?"

"Yeah, basically," Sarah said.

"And Evolet's fine now?"

"Yeah, she's good," she said and Rowan nodded.

"Right, so he could just disappear. You know, cause we don't need him anymore," Rowan said and behind her Wo, Con and Steven all groaned.

"Really? We're going to plan a murder in a church?"

"God is listening!" Con hissed.

"Well, what do you want to do then?" Rowan cried. "This can't happen. The mans a psychopath, and his wife is a cokehead! The only reason any of them got anywhere in life is cause daddy's money opened the doors for them."

"Ah," came from all three men who knew exactly what that was like. Though Steve still found it ironic that Rowan was throwing around the word psychopath so lightly…. Especially in light of her own… evil tendencies.

"Well… how did all of this going down in your world?" Trevor asked, and Rowan turned back to him. "I mean… did it go down in your world?"

"It did."

"Okay, and did things go the same as they are now?"

"It did not."

"Well… why not?"

"Uh… because Howard Czernyc is terrified of me," she said. "And he had a string of uncanny luck leading up to the trial that dissuaded him from going through it."

"Uncanny lucky?"

"Oh yes. He and his wife had a bad trip on some coke. It turned out his batch, and only his batch, was accidentally spiked with mushrooms and THC," she said. "And uh… he got mugged four times in a week, twice in one day, and then of course… his car ended up at the bottom of a lake…"

Steve's eyebrows raised up, this sounded an awful lot like Black Cat protocols.

"Then of course, no one could prove that it was me, and since we couldn't prove it was me, and it was clear the bad luck was going to… well… continue… especially if he continued down the legal path he was on, he decided to sign away all parental rights," Rowan said with a shrug. "And a contract stating that he can never change his mind. Only Ev can change her mind about him being in her life."

She had said it all so apathetically, Steve could 100 percent imagine her saying it just like that to Howard if he had confronted her about it.

Sarah glanced to Trevor and then back to her. "You think you could do that now?"

Rowan shook her head. "It's too far now," Rowan said. "I had almost half a year to wreck havoc on him. I don't have that long now."

Sarah sighed, she started to sniff, she was clearly about to cry. "I don't know what I'm going to do."

Rowan turned back to the pews and beside him Wo Fat sighed. "I said I'd dig up dirt and I will. It'll take some time but I can."

"Well, we have like two months so… dig fast," Trevor said to which Wo Fat just gave him a thumbs up.

Sarah hugged her sides. "What if there isn't anything to dig."

Wo Fat scoffed. "They're rich. You don't get that rich and stay that rich without doing something illegal. Trust me. There's dirt and I will find it."

Sarah narrowed her eyes at him, and then to turned to Rowan. "It's true, he's very good at extorting people."

She glanced again to Trevor and he smiled encouragingly. "We can do this. I believe in them," he said and then turned to Rowan. "Right?"

She nodded, but it was clear she was stuck in her own head. She was thinking to herself and that was never good.

"And we're sure that he can't just… go missing?" she asked suddenly. "Cause I can make it so they don't ever find his body…"

A combo of "NO," and "Ro," flew at her from all the other people in the church.

Rowan rolled her eyes. "Ugh, fine, we'll do this the hard way," she said.

That should have made everyone feel better but it didn't. So they all left that church feeling uneasy and a little grateful that their trip would be coming to an end soon.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

That ended up being their last day in Victoria.

By the time they got back to the hotel after that disastrous choir practice, they had all gotten separate calls.

Steve got a call from the governor saying that he was needed back in Hawaii, if not just to help the wildly understaffed team now that Kono and Chin were officially gone, but to help re-staff it. Something he was not looking forward to.

Wo Fat got a call from the CIA saying that he was to head back to Nevada asap for reassignment, and that they didn't have to be so nice to give him this much time off considering everything. Wo Fat made him apologize, but agreed to come back.

Con got offered a job, it was worth a lot of money and he was certain he could get it done before Ro had to be in Hollywood for her movie premiere.

And Rowan got a call from Pete Ganberg saying that he was having trouble getting an artist to agree to her price. She kept telling him to just not sell it, but he wouldn't listen.

So it was decided they'd fly out as soon as the could.

Which was the following afternoon.

Steve had asked over and over if Rowan was okay with that and she kept saying that she was. She had done everything she could think of and Nahele got to have a touristy day so there wasn't anything else that needed to be done. She sounded sincere but he could also tell that she was sad.

Once the plane tickets were secured Rowan had called her dad and then her brother and then her mom and told them all separately what had transpired. She told them all about how she wished she could stay longer but all of them had business to go back to. Which included Nahele who needed to go back to his part time job.

Her mother had commended her on instilling strong work ethics in her son, and Rowan was on cloud nine for the rest of their packing.

Rowan sent Steve down with her Credit card to settle the fees for all the rooms and services. When he came back, he handed Rowan the bill and had been absolutely shocked at all the service charges. Rowan wasn't though, she figured most would be Con going through the mini bar, and Wo loved his spa services.

He kept saying that he only like them when he was with Rowan, but that wasn't true. She had showed him the wonders of the spa and now he did it even when she wasn't with him.

The pay-per-view in their hotel room she knew was Nahele, and she totally planned on letting him think he got away with ordering a few… adult films… while he was here. It was a normal high school experience, she said.

Again, Steve didn't feel the same way about that. In fact, he was once again reminded to be worried about her childhood. He wanted to confront him about it, to talk to him about what were typical teenaged urges. But she was right, there was a time and place and that place would be at home. Not then and there in a hotel with her brothers across the hall. Especially since they were super busy at that time trying to pack fast enough to get them all to the ferry in time so they could get to the airport in time.

Once they made it to the ferry, however, it was clear that they weren't going to the airport on their own.

The whole Pierce family was there. Trevor, and his parents, their tickets for the ferry already bought. They were determined to see them off at the airport. Steve wasn't all that happy about it, but Rowan was ecstatic and that was all that mattered.

When they got to the airport, Steve found that the Wo Fat's bosses had sent a handler to pick him up.

"I said I was coming back!" he had cried when he saw them. "What the hell did you think I meant by that?! And why didn't they send Kono if they were so worried?"

The man they had sent to get him actually backed away from him. Poor man, was terrified of Wo Fat. He might have bolted entirely had Rowan not stepped between them. It was clear he expected her to protect him, or calm Wo Fat down, but that was not Rowan's way, and he was about to learn that.

"I'm going to say good-bye to my brother," she said sternly. "This is private, go away."

The man glanced to Wo Fat and then to Steve clearly looking for some kind of support but he didn't get it.

"I'd listen to her," Steve said and then man just left them. Literally just turned around and walked away.

Rowan wrapped Wo Fat up in a hug right away. "Text me when you land," they said together and then they both chuckled.

Once Rowan let go Con was next. He clasped Wo Fat in a tight hug that seemed to surprise the older man. "Text me too," he said before letting him go to hug Rowan. "And you too."

"Promise," Rowan said softly. "Be careful on your mission. I'll see you soon, right?"

"Course you will."

"Thanks for coming with me," Steve said to Wo Fat offering him a hand to shake that Wo Fat took right away. He too kind of wanted to hug him but he knew Wo Fat wouldn't like that.

"Didn't come for you, I came for my sister," he said. It was what he always said, but there was a smile there, a turning up in his lips that Steve might not have noticed before spending so much time with him. Now that he noticed it, he realized that while the words had stayed the same, the meaning was different.

That little turning up of his lips meant: "you're welcome."

Maybe in a few years he'd get a real you're welcome from him.

"I'm gonna miss you Uncle Oz," Nahele suddenly cried pushing past Steve to hug Wo Fat.

Steve didn't miss the small surprised smile that hit Wo Fat's face. "I'll uh… I'll miss you too."

"And I'm going to miss you too Uncle Con," Nahele cried going to hug Con who hugged him back without a single bit of hesitation.

"You can call me any time. Or text me your funny gifs."

"They're called memes."

"Whatever."

When Steve turned back around Rowan was standing with the family that might have been hers if she had been born in this world. She was hugging Trevor, who eventually let her go to hug Trenton.

Finally, when she was done with that she got to hug her mom. The mom she had never been good enough for.

"You… you can come visit any time," her mother said. "And… if you'd like to… weekly calls… I do them with Trevor, I'd love to have one with you. Keep up with you and my… my new grandson."

"I already have a Nana," Nahele said right away.

"Well, I'm good with Pappy, that's what my dad was going to be… if he had lived to meet the grand kids," he said.

"Right, and your mom was going to be Nanny. Only Trevor got to call her that," she said. "What do you say about those?"

Nahele glanced to Rowan as if not sure what to say but eventually he said: "I think that's okay. I just…"

"Let's give him some time to get used to this. He's not used to having family, especially grand parents."

"Well, that's certainly fair," her mother said.

"Maybe next time we'll come to you," Trenton said before turning to Steven. "Unless we're still on the deported list."

"I'll make sure you're not," Steve said quickly and Trenton actually smiled. "Thank you for having us, and… uh… for hearing me out."

"Thank you for not pressing kidnapping charges on my son," Roselyn said pulling Steve in for a hug. Her mouth came close to his ear followed by a whisper of: "If you hurt this girl, if you revert back to what you were, I will do everything in my power to make sure you never see her or that boy again."

Then she pulled away and smiled a dangerously glittering smile that he had definitely seen before.

On his wife's face.

She may not have had the icy blue Pierce eyes, but she definitely had the ice queen threatening smile on her face.

Steve just nodded to her, knowing there was no way he could argue. So, they finished say their good-bye's and together they headed towards security.

Wo Fat got fast tracked through security, so they said a finally good-bye at Security. Con was at a different gate, on the opposite end of the airport so they said good-bye once they were through security. And then it was just Steve, his wife, and his son making their way to their own terminals.

It felt weird not having her two brothers with them, and the fact that he was used to their presence felt weird to Steve.

Once they found their gate and got their seats to wait in, Nahele wanted coffee.

Rowan handed him money, told him her order and what Steve would want and then they were alone. They hadn't gotten a lot of alone time for this trip but that was okay. This wasn't one of their sex-capades as Danny called them.

"You know, you're going to have to stop lying to them at some point," rowan said and Steve frowned at her.

"What are you talking about? Who am I lying to?"

"My Parents. I mean… you holding onto that lie about how you deported them because I told you bad things about them," she said. "I wasn't talking about my family when you deported them, you knew nothing about them and my past with them. I was keeping all of that bottled inside at that point."

"Yeah, why were you doing that?"

"Because if I told you what I went through, you'd be able to tell I was damaged, and I was so fucking in love with you I only wanted you to see the good," Rowan said right away. Steve found himself smiling. The first three years with Rowan had been horrible, but he loved hearing that she had loved him as much as he had loved her back then. Even if it did take them literally forever to sort their shit out.

"And don't change the topic," she snapped. "The point is you keep saying it's my bad stories about them that made you deport them, and that's not true. You just didn't want to share. The bad stories just validated your choice."

Steve nodded, it was true, that was what happened.

"I'll tell them at some point," he said. "I just… I want them to like me first…"

He wasn't sure it was possible. They were all still convince he was her abuser still. It was going to take a while to get himself out from under that.

"Well you better tell them before they meet Danny, because he will not cover for you. He also might let it slip that it's a lie," she said.

And yes, that was true too.

"Don't worry. I'll figure it out," Steve said and Rowan nodded.

"You ready to go home?" she asked him.

The truth was he had liked this. Not having to be pulled off to go to work, getting to spend all the time he wanted with her and his family.

"Yeah," he said, even though he wasn't ready to be in demand the way Five-0 wanted him to.

He was starting to think that Danny had the right idea. Maybe retirement was a little closer than Steve thought.
