Chapter 409

It took some arguing to get them to this point. Which meant, even with the flashers on and the sirens blaring, Duclair had one hell of a head start on them.

Luckily Jerry was tracking the mustang he had jacked through it's anti-theft device. He was giving them a play by play on where he was going.

So they had caught up, they could see the stolen car, but they hadn't gotten him to pull over, and they weren't anywhere near close enough to ram him.

"You should have let me drive," Con said from the back. He was still wearing his mask, having refused to take it off and was in the process of fiddling with one of his pistols. In specifically, fitting an iron sight onto it and making sure that it was loaded.

"Duke has HPD getting the helicopter up," Danny said ignoring the assassin behind him.

"I'd've rammed him by now," Con continued. "Y'all are the worst to collaborate with, you slow me down…"

"You didn't have to come with me!" Steve cried but Con just scoffed at him.

"Hey, does this thing go any faster?" Tani asked coming up to lean against the center console.

"Danny?"

But Danny had nothing, he was enjoying this too much.

"Con, could you…"

"Sit down," Con snapped as he dragged her back into the back seat with him. "He's a shit driver as is, you want him to crash us?"

Yeah that was not better.

Steve was struggling not to lose his shit, was coaching himself through his combat breathing to calm himself down, when suddenly the window went down.

"Oh, so I can't lean on the console, but he can go out the window?"

Steve glanced back to see that Con 100 percent had gone out the window, or at least his top half of him had.

"What the hell is he doing?!" Steve cried, and then heard gunshots.

Jesus. Christ. He was shooting at Duclair? But there were like three cars between him and Duclair.

He swerved to get around one and heard Con swear. "Stop swerving! I can't hit him if you don't drive straight!"

"Get back in the car you psycho!" Steve screamed.

At that point Tani grabbed the back of his black jeans and dragged him back into the car.

"What? What is the problem?"

"We are not shooting out of car windows!" Steve shouted. "Pull that window up and just… sit tight, we'll get him when we get him!"

Con rolled that window up and then sat back with a pout. "No fun! The lot of you!"

Steve was literally about to lose his shit on him. How the hell did Wo Fat deal with this guy and Rowan together on a daily basis? No seriously? Cause the two of them were nuts.

Luckily he didn't have to deal with him for much longer, because Duclair made the mistake of turning onto a little dirt road that turned into a dead end. It led into a jungle and it was a good start point for a hike. What it meant for them was that they could catch him.

Except he ditched the car and ran into the trees.

Steve pulled the Camaro to a stop as well and then they were all hopping out. As Grover pulled up behind in the escalade, Steve and Danny were busy suiting up.

"Don't go anywhere!" he called to Con who immediately groaned.

Con turned with a: "But he's getting away!" just as Steve stripped himself of the blue button down shirt he had been wearing and Danny did the same. Con seemingly paused in his whining, took in what was happening and then pointed at them.

"Why are you taking your shirt off, you guys can't go in like that?" Con asked.

Steve turned to him as he picked up his tee-shirt. "No, can't fighting in a button down, Con."

"Maybe you can't…"

"Okay if you're not gonna be helpful…"

"I'm just saying!" Con cried. "You know what your job is, you should dress appropriately."

Steve glared at him and then slapped a vest into his chest. "Put the Kevlar on."

"Uh… no… I'm good."

"Con, if you get shot on my watch, your brother will kill me."

"Not my sister?"

"Rowan will be very mad at me, but I know she'll at least know you turned it down. Wo won't care if you did or not."

"The man's unarmed, McGarrett, I'll be fine."

"Just put it on or I will call him and let him yell at you."

They held each other's gaze for a little while and, for a moment, Steve thought he might actually have to call Wo Fat. But then Con sighed, this aggressive, groan of a sigh, and ripped off his jacket to start putting on the Kevlar.

Muttering to himself in Spanish, no doubt about Steven.

But that meant Steven could finally put his shirt on.

There was a beat of silence as they were all prepping until Tani, who had been standing there trying not to stare at the two older and shirtless men, said: "So, uh, what about me?"

They all sort of looked at her but it was Grover who asked: "Why are you here?"

"Seconded," Con said. "Goddamn it, not everything's going to fit."

"Do you need everything?" Danny asked just as Con moved to the trunk started dropping everything that didn't fit in it.

He was dropping knives and reloads and his under arm holsters. He even took off the machete.

Grover shook his head at him and then turned back to Tani. "You know what? I don't care, you've gone far enough."

"Well, there are thousands of acres of land," she reminded them. "You're gonna need all the help you can get."

"Eh, it'll be fine," Con said. "He's probably leaving one hell of a trail. Guy that big, can't really hide himself in a forest."

"Okay, Pathfinder," Steve said. "She's right. We're going to need the help."

At that Con sighed. "Great, another person to babysit, as if I don't have enough to worry about with just you three. Specially you."

Steve ignored her and handed her a gun. "You're not giving her a gun, right?" Grover asked.

"I know we don't have a lot of time, but maybe it's worth a little short conversation?" Danny said and Con huffed aggressively.

He turned around, a gun of his own in his own hand and then held it out to her.

"Here, just take one of mine. It's a stolen gun with the serial number filed off. So no one can trace I back to you."

Tani just stared at him and then turned back to McGarrett who was frowning.

"Con..."

"What? I have more than enough to share seeing as I can't take most of my weapons with me cause someone's making me wear Kevlar when I won't need it…"

"You have stolen guns? Why would you say that? You're surrounded by law enforcement!"

"Hey! You know what I do for a living!"

"What does he do for a living?" Tani asked.

None of the Five-0s stepped up to answer, probably because they didn't want to admit to her who he was and how he came to be working with them, but Con seemingly did care.

"I'm an assassin," he said and immediately Steve winced because he knew what was coming next.

"You're a what?!"

"An assassin. I kill people for money."

Tani turned onto McGarrett "Who the hell is this guy?!"

"He's my brother-in-law." Steve said with a wince. "He means well he's just a little…"

"Crazy?" Tani finished for him. Steve wasn't going to use that word but it was accurate.

"Hey! I am not crazy! I am good at what I do," he cried pointing at her with the gun in his hand.

"Just put the gun away please, Con."

"Fine."

McGarret then offered out the gun he was going to give her. "What's the first rule of carrying a firearm?"

"Always have spare ammo," Con said and Steve turned to him.

"Not you," he said and turned back to Tani and waited for her to answer.

"Don't shoot the good guys," she said.

"Eh, sometimes you need to."

Wow. Thanks Con. That did not make him feel good about having to go into a jungle with that man.

Steve just shook his head. "Ignore him."

As Tani got on her own Kevlar they finished loading up their weapons. Con had gone into the woods found the start of the trail and then came back to Danny just staring at him.

Con looked him up and down and then said: "What is your problem?"

"I don't have a problem," Danny said raising his hands in mock surrender.

"You do, you keep staring at me."

"I do not."

Steve knew exactly what Danny was doing, and why he was staring at Con like that. Steve was hoping to ignore it.

Con, however, wasn't going to drop it.

"Why is he looking at me like that, McGarrett?"

Steve didn't want to answer that question, but he also didn't want the man arguing with him or Danny in this situation. So after quickly weighing the pros and cons, he decided to tell him the truth.

"Well uh… Ro may have told me to make sure that Tani didn't meet her brother… but she didn't tell me which brother so…."

"Well thank you for tell me that after I met her. Let's hope Ro meant our older brother, otherwise we're fucked!" Con cried and then glanced back to Tani. "But maybe it was me. Would explain why she's hell bent on driving me crazy!"

At that Tani just scoffed at him.

"Just lead the way Pathfinder."

Con shook his head but turned around, pointed at something and said: "This way."

With Con in the lead they walked for a few minutes. He kept his eyes firmly planted on the ground, he kept pointing out broken stems and out of place leaves that didn't seem out of place to any of them, and saying that he went that way.

Steve would always look at whatever he was pointed out and agreed that Duclair was actually going in that direction.

This went on for a while and then Con just stopped.

"Uh-oh," he said, they all came to a halt behind him.

"What? What is it?" Danny asked, in the same tone someone would ask a dog that.

"Your guy's a firebug, ain't he?"

"Why?"

Con gestured for them to follow him, taking them off the path that they had been on. They took maybe twenty steps a piece before they got to what he must have sensed.

"He did what he does best," Con said as they looked at the flames steadfast getting higher and spreading out. "He set a fire.

Great. Just. Great.

They all stood there taking in the fire, before their eyes turned to Steve as if waiting for answers.

"Alright… so, we're turning back, right?"

Steve turned to them but Con seemed to be looking at the ground again. "He definitely went this way, he's leaving footprints now…"

"Right, and how you going to track him in the fire, Tonto?" Tani asked him and he turned back to her. Mask or not, Steve could tell the man was frowning.

"Uh, I'm not we're going to let him fry."

Steve shook his head. "Nope, we're going to split up."

At that Con turned to him. "Wait… we're staying here… in the fire?"

"Duclair could easily escape this."

"And if he does we could just have me find him. It's not this hard!"

Steve turned to the others, planning to ignore Con completely. "We're going in!"

"Aw, come on, McGarrett! Don't make me go in there with you."

"You don't have to come!" Steve cried. "You can go to the car, thank you."

"Uh… yes… yes I do have to come, because I promised my sister I'd keep you alive."

"This guy really is your brother-in-law?" Tani asked and Steve rolled his eyes. She must have thought he was lying when he told her that.

Like it was a joke or something.

He kinda wished it was a joke.

"Look, we're going to split up, create a bottleneck, catch this guy before we all end up barbequed."

"No, I like that even less," Con said. "My job is to keep all of y'all alive, can't do that if we split up."

"Technically you promised Ro you'd take care of me…"

Con thought about it for a moment and then said: "You're right, fine, then we split up but I'm going with you cause you're my priority, the rest of you are on your own."

"Gee, thanks…" Grover muttered and Con just gave him a thumbs up.

Steve shook his head, but he couldn't shake Con when the group split up, heading into different directions, but still into the blaze.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Steve and Con had been walking for a while when Con hissed again.

He paused to adjust his mask again, taking it off to swipe at the sweat on his brow and then put his mask back on. Steve sighed, it was the fourth time he had done that and at this point, it was not only a hazard, but slowing them down.

"Just take off the mask Con!" he ordered.

Which got him a defiant: "No!" from the assassin.

Yes, it was his signature, but he didn't need to wear it. They were in a fire, the thing was plastic, that wasn't a good combination and, side from Tani, everyone else knew what he looked like.

"It's gonna melt into your face!"

"Then I'll match with Wo."

With his mask fixed he stormed past McGarrett, knocking his shoulder into his as he went by. He stepped past a tree when suddenly a flaming branch swung into him knocking him to the ground.

Except it wasn't a branch. It was a torch. Duclair had attacked him.

Steve pulled out his gun and pointed it right at Duclair's face. "Drop it! It's over Duclair, you wanna live we gotta get out of here."

Duclair was frozen. He threw the torch to the side as requested but he didn't look like he wanted to go with them. But Steve had the gun and he had the upper hand, and he just wanted to get out of there.

Con, however, wanted to avenge his pride.

He kicked the feet out from under Duclair, and then, quick as a bunny, jumped up to his feet to attack him back.

Goddamn it! They had won, why was he fighting him when they had won?

Con managed to wrestle him to the ground, but he kicked Con off of him. When he got up he was looking to run, but there was only one way that didn't have fire and Steve was in front of it.

So he shoulder tackled Steve, twice in a row. The first one he managed to block, but the second one knocked him down.

Duclair was up again, he grabbed Steve by the Kevlar, hoisting him up so that the Kevlar was restricting his airflow.

His grip only loosened when Con jumped onto his back, putting him in a sleeper hold to choke him out properly.

Steve scrambled away and then up as he caught his breath, which was hard to do with all the smoke, but he didn't get a lot of time to try. He Managed to grab Con and flip him over. Steve had to step over Con to get at Duclair to keep the man from kicking him when he was down.

Duclair swatted his pistol out of his hands, an actually managed to get a hold of the semi-automatic weapon he had strapped to his back. During the struggle to keep him from shooting at him, a few rounds went off that Con had to roll out of the way of.

As they were struggling, Con got up and kicked the arm that Duclair was mostly bracing on. There was a snap sound and a cry from Duclair, and he backed way.

He obviously didn't break his arm, though, because he went at them again. He started by deflecting Con, literally batting him away like he was a rag doll, and then grabbing Steve and flipping him. When Steve hit the ground Duclair got on top of him, grabbing his neck to choke him then and there.

Con got on his back again, wrapped his arms around his neck and struggled to both pull him back and choke him at the same time, but Duclair wasn't going down easy.

And that was the scene that Danny, Grover and Tani walked in on.

Danny watched all of this go down and just stood their shaking his head. Tani looked confused or maybe concerned, while Grover lifted his shotgun to aim at Duclair.

"Hands up Duclair! Hands up!" Grover was shouting.

"I got this!" was shouted at them from both Steve and Con.

Steve then punched Duclair in the face, which got the man to reel back. Because he was off balance and Con was tugging on him so hard, the two of them actually tumbled backwards.

Con hit the ground with Duclair on top of him with a painful grunt, and because he was winded, Duclair managed to get up before him, but only barely.

Both Steve and Con had gotten up again, they were shoulder to shoulder almost facing off with Duclair, ready to take him on again.

And then Tani shot him in the leg.

Both Steve and Con flinched and then turned to her. Steve with a disappointed glare, Con with his arms outstretched at her.

"Aww, I mean…" he then turned to Tani. "Are you just out to ruin everything for me?"

Grover lowered his weapon and moved over get Duclair into handcuffs.

Con was clearly very annoyed with Tani but Steve, Steve was livid. He hated it when Grover going to put Duclair in irons. Steve however was livid.

Why was everyone stepping into his fights recently? He could fight his own battles and he would have been fine1

"What did I just say?"

"Look, maybe you would've won, I don't know…" "—Uh… excuse me," Con cried. "I always win, I've only been defeated by one person…" "I'm done with this weenie roast. Can we get out of here?"

"Yeah, we better go," Steve said.

This time, Steve was leading the way, he guessed that Con was having issues seeing through the mask. It would also explain why he fought so poorly, usually he's better then that.

Grover had his hands full with Duclair, while the others sort of followed after Steve

"Who's the one person who defeated you?" Steve heard Danny ask as they forged forward.

"We're not going to talk about it."

There was a beat of silence before Grover said: "It's Rowan isn't it…"

"She doesn't fight fair and we all know it!" Con thundered and Steve struggled to bite back his laughter.

He all but failed to contain it when he heard Tani say: "Taken down by a girl, pathetic."

Con said nothing, though Steve could tell the man was annoyed, but that that moment they had bigger problems.

They needed to find their way out of a fire.
