Chapter 437

Steve had sort of hoped that Wo Fat wouldn't actually win the bid on the house down the street. He knew that Rowan was really excited to have her favourite older brother moving in next door, even if he wasn't really going to be there that often, and while Steve had also hoped that, with Wo Fat down the street, he would be able to help him reign Rowan in, he knew it wouldn't actually work out that way.

What would actually happen, was Rowan going to his house whenever they had an argument, and Wo Fat, who always sided with Rowan, would no doubt refuse to let him in.

Danny had reminded him of that. That Wo Fat never did things to help Steve unless explicitly asked and he never sided with Steve when it came to anything involving Rowan unless he thought she was being unsafe.

He was not that lucky. Wo Fat won the bid, and was given a date in which they could move in. That meant he had Jian packing things up to hopefully void over to Hawaii.

The plan was to rent a storage unit and then have Rowan open a portal to it so they could move everything over.

Never mind that he didn't want Rowan doing that, because she was pregnant and when she used the void she felt a pressure in her stomach. She kept saying it didn't hurt if she just opened doors, it was going through the void that hurt her.

Steve still wasn't amused.

But there wasn't anything he could do except bitch at Danny who was enjoying this entirely.

Rowan was so ecstatic it didn't matter what Steve said. She was already looking for good office spaces for a doctor's office for Jian's practice as well as parenting classes for her and Jian to go to together.

She was super excited to have a pregnancy buddy. Granted Jian was only a month and a half into her pregnancy and Rowan was almost to six, she was still excited to have someone to go through this with. She was excited that their baby was going to have a cousin close to their age.

The only problem was that Con and Rowan were still not talking.

Wo Fat had mentioned that he wanted Con's help with moving but that Con would only help if Rowan wasn't there. And he'd only be okay with Rowan being around if she apologized to both him and Tani.

Wo Fat had known the two of them were arguing but he hadn't been aware it was that bad. He had tried to get Rowan to apologize but she refused. She also refused to tell him what her problem with Tani was, she wouldn't even tell Steve.

Neither Rowan nor Con had asked him to choose a side, they just asked that he not try to bring them together. Steve could tell that Wo Fat was floundering with that though. But he did well keeping them apart the few brief times he had been in Hawaii.

Steve had been sticking closer to home since Rowan stopped talking to Con.

He didn't feel good leaving her without Con's protection.

But that day he had gotten called in for a case and he couldn't say no. He did, however, make Rowan promise to stay home and take it easy and that, if she didn't, he would literally harass the Governor into giving him paternal leave until the baby came.

The case seemed cut and dry. Something he could get done in a day. So he had had taken Junior with him so he could shadow. He figured it was time to let him see how Five-0 worked.

But that also meant that Junior had to sit through a whole car ride where Steve and Danny argued about what was going to be on their menu. And Danny was not up to being accommodating to different types of diets, which Steve thought was stupid.

When they got to the palace their argument was halted by Jerry's newest haircut. Danny had asked if that was for AJ, his long distance maybe-girlfriend and he blushed. That meant yes.

Jerry got off the topic by explaining what he knew about their case.

A woman had been found floating on the ocean in just a life raft that morning. She had been suffering heat stroke and was dehydrated. She had been rushed to the nearest hospital.

They had to figure out where she came from.

Judging by the fact that she was found in a sparkling cocktail dress he was guessing off a private yacht. They had to find that yacht.

Since alerting Steve of the case and him getting there Jerry had established that the woman's name was Monique Sims and she was an acquaintance of Adam. They weren't going to call him yet, but he might be of use later if they needed more info on her.

The coast guard and the doctors attending to her were certain that she had been adrift for about 8 hours. Then Jerry confirmed that she was on the guest list of a party on a yacht called the Serenity.

They had tried hailing it but no one was responding. That meant something was wrong, but without them responding he wasn't sure how he'd figure out where they were.

Junior reminded him that, with the radio frequency, they could triangulate it's position. Jerry did that for them and then they were off to see what was going on with that boat.

Steve brought Danny, Junior and Tani with him, but also Noelani cause he was guessing that something happened on that boat and it would be better to have the coroner there with him.

Unfortunately Noelani told Danny all about how unsafe helicopters were. He had specifically spent years reminding Danny how safe they were and Noelani had undone that in an instant. Steve was not looking forward to that lecture he was going to get later.

Luckily for him, at that point they had reached the boat and they could already see bodies on the ground. Steve and the team roped down to secure the scene and then they'd get Noelani down with them.

They had gone through the whole boat and there were 11 bodies in total. The ones that Steve found looking distressingly similar both in mode of death and in something he had seen before when he was a SEAL and Junior could tell. Steve knew that because Junior asked him if he had seen something like this before, and, of course, Steve had.

And if he was right about what this was they were screwed.

"Did all your bodies look like this?" Steve asked the team once they come back to him.

"Yeah, it was terrible," Danny said. "You know what this is?"

"It looks like their injuries are internal," Tani said and she was pretty close. They had definitely bled from the inside and out but these weren't… injuries.

"Symptoms like these can only mean one thing. These people were all exposed to some kind of biological agent."

They all took that in, but it was Tani that verbalized what the real problem was. "And now so are we."

Yes, yes they had been.

Cue the panic.

They had absolutely no idea what caused this. It could have been anything, you know?

Steve had called Lou, cause, as most of the team was there with Steve, it would be up to Lou to figure this out and get them their antidote.

It would also be up to him to get Monique Sims and anyone she had been in contact with into a containment area.

On that call, Jerry gave him even worse news. The Serenity only left dock 23 hours ago, so whatever they had come in contact with was fast acting.

Great right?

He wanted to get the boat moving, see if they could intercept CDC, who would hopefully be on the way to them, but that wasn't possible. Boat was out of fuel.

The helicopter couldn't wait for them either, so his plan was to cut up one of the bodies and send that sample back up with Noelani. With that they'd be able to tell what this was and hopefully get them on the road to clear a lot quicker.

The problem is, after explaining that they weren't going back in the helicopter, because they had been exposed and they couldn't chance infecting more people, his team was less than pleased.

"I can't tell. Is he for real right now?" Tani asked.

The question was directed at Danny who knew him best. And as always, Danny had an answer for them.

"Yes, he's…" he started and then trailed off. "What's the matter with you? What are you, nuts?"

"I know how you guys feel right now," Steve said quickly and was cut off.

"No, you don't," Danny said right away.

"I do, I do. Every instinct in my body is telling me to get off this boat and save myself. That's not an option, alright? CDC knows we're here. They're send a unit as we speak. That's gotta be enough for now. Meanwhile, in the next eight minutes, we need to collect as much evidence as we can to send back with that helo, alright? So let's get to work."

It was a rousing speech, and it should have worked. It worked on Tani and Junior. But it didn't work on Danny.

"This is about Ro."

Tani and Junior, who had been in the process of turning away, turned back.

"About Ro? Why would this be about his wife?" Tani asked.

"Because he knows, if he goes back to the mainland infected the way he is, she's going to walk all over the red tape and quarantine zone to get to him. Which means she and the baby will be at risk and he's not going to chance that."

Steve glared at him. It was true, he was worried mostly about Rowan and his baby, but also Nahele too. He couldn't chance whatever this was getting back to the mainland and putting anyone at risk, especially his family.

"Is he serious?" Tani asked again, this time about Danny.

"Okay, yes, yes, I'm worried about Ro and her inability to stay away when I tell her to. But I'm also worried about a potential epidemic hitting the mainland. We know nothing about this, other than it's fast acting. If it's so contagious that we've got it too, and it's that fast acting, we can't let this reach the mainland."

"Not that it matters, with what she can do, there's a good chance she already knows and is about to show up," Danny said.

It was cruel of Danny to remind him of her powers, but he had and now Steve was worried. He wanted to remind Danny that he had made Rowan promise not to use the void while she was pregnant, but Danny beat him to that too.

"We both know if your… you're loud enough she'll walk through that "don't do it," rule you put on her," he added and the panic came alive in his chest.

It took all of Steve's willpower to muscle it down, to quiet his strings, cause he knew exactly what Danny was getting at and he couldn't have Rowan figuring out what was happening, because she would, in fact, show up on that boat.

"Fuck! Fuck you!" he shouted at Danny and then paused. "And fuck me!"

"Cause I'm right," Danny said smugly, clearly enjoying Steve's panic and worry.

"What are you two talking about?"

"You don't understand, my wife…" he trailed off, because neither Junior nor Tani knew about her powers.

"Is this because you think she's psychic?" Tani asked

"Sure, something like that," Steve said and then went for his phone again.

"Who are you calling now?" Danny snapped.

"Who do you think?" Steve snapped back.

He dialed the one person he thought could help him. It rang once before Wo Fat picked up.

"What? I'm interrogating a suspect…"

Steve paused. "They're letting you interrogate a suspect?"

"No, I'm waiting for Kono to tell me it's okay and then I'm going to go at this guy the way I want to go at it."

"Wow," Steve said softly. "Yeah, I don't have time to unpack how dangerous that is, uhm, I have a situation."

"Yes, I know. You don't ever call me unless something's wrong. You never call just to see how I'm doing, very rude, you know."

"We're not friends," Steve growled. "Our deal was we could call each other if we have issues with Ro, and that's what I've been doing."

"No, you call me when you need help with your cases."

"Okay, well this is a Ro issue."

"Does it also involve your case?"

"Yes it does, but this is more about Ro, okay?"

"I'll be the judge of that, thank you," Wo Fat said primly and then sighed wearily when Steve didn't move to elaborate. "What's happened now?"

"I've come in contact with what I'm guessing is a very contagious, very dangerous pathogen," he said and then he waited for Wo Fat to digest that. Unfortunately he came to the wrong conclusion.

"So you've come across a new plague, got yourself in contact with it, and you're telling me this a Ro situation?" Wo Fat asked. "I unno about you but this sounds like a you problem McGarrett."

"Yes, it's a me problem, but I'm in the middle of an ocean on a boat right now, no one can come near me because if they do they'll get infected as well, while my team is looking for the antidote…"

"So what, you want me to track down an anitdote? Do you even know what you have?"

"No, but I'm going to be sending a sample back to the mainland for testing," Steve said. "And no, I don't need you to find the antidote, I need you to really think about what Ro's going to do when she finds out I'm in this situation."

For a moment Wo Fat was silent on the other end and Steve sat there waiting for him to get it.

"Fuck."

There. He got it. He knew exactly what Rowan was going to do. She was going to find that antidote and come and get it to him, which would lead to her getting infected and he couldn't chance it. She was five months pregnant for fuck sake.

"There. See," Steve said. "Now. Do you think you can help me?"

"Fuck!" Wo Fat said a little more loudly. "Do you know how hard it is for me to get time off? I was banking on using it for Jian in a few weeks for when we move into the house!"

"Well… call in sick and ask her to pull you or…"

"I can call Con, have him sit on her…"

"Are they talking again?"

Wo Fat was quiet a moment.

"Fuck!" he cried a little more shrilly. Steve heard a door open and then heard Wo Fat call: "I'm calling in sick!"

He then had to listen to some poor desk jockey attempt to explain that Wo Fat couldn't call in sick for work, from work. Wo Fat didn't seem to get it but eventually said: "Look. I'm leaving. I don't feel well and I'm leaving."

"You don't look sick," that desk jockey said to him and then there was just silence. After a brief moment where Steve was certain Wo Fat was just glaring at the poor man he shakily said: "Uh… okay. Uhm… feel better… will we see you tomorrow?"

"I hope so," Wo Fat said to him and then he was back on the phone. "You owe me. I don't care if I owe you favours. I'm losing out on PTO I could have used with Jian, you better use all that down time on that fucking boat to brainstorm the most romantic date I can recreate to make it up to her… and me!"

"Yeah, yeah, just please make sure Ro doesn't find out about this."

Wo Fat didn't even dignify that with a response. He literally just hung up the phone.

That left Steve sitting there, trying to reel in the panic, struggling with everything he had in him to quiet his own strings.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Wo had gone back to the motel he was staying in and then really thought about what he was going to have to do.

Distracting his sister from the strings she looked at the most would require something bigger to distract her with. Steve had been on that boat for at least an hour at this point, if Rowan hadn't shown up on that boat by this point then the strings weren't warning her. She did say that since the pregnancy, since Steve's insistence on avoiding using the void, she hadn't been getting the same warnings like she used to. Yes she got the twangs if someone called for her, but everything else had been muted.

If Steve hadn't called her, f he had been keeping his strings quiet, there was a good chance she just had no idea he was in trouble.

Wo would have to keep her from figuring out.

Daunting task considering who his sister and how mad she'd be when she found out what he was keeping from her.

Last time he had done something like this for McGarrett she had portaled him mid jump and almost broken his neck.

The first person he contacted was Adam. He was still in Hawaii after all and he correctly assumed that, with most of Steve's team down, Adam would go in to help. So Wo had asked him to send him updates seeing as Steve was no doubt going to be out of the loop most of the time. Wo Fat wanted his updates on how the search for the antidote was going fresh.

The second call he made was to Con. He wasn't sure how he'd respond to this but he had a feeling he was going to need help, especially if the remaining Five-0s were having issues tracking down that antidote.

Con picked up on the second ring. "Hey, you good?"

He always answered Wo's calls like that. There was always an excited lilt to his voice whenever Wo called because he was hoping for a more entertaining job.

To be honest, he wasn't sure if he had taken a job seeing as he was mad at Rowan now. Wo didn't know if he was still sticking around and not taking new jobs to keep an eye on her.

"I've got a situation, was wondering if I could keep you on retainer?"

He could almost hear Con's smile on the other end. "What kind of situation? A hunting situation? You taking more people down today?"

"No. I have a McGarrett situation, his case went sideways."

At that Con paused and Wo wondered if this would be the first job request that Con would turn down.

"McGarrett… Tani's with McGarrett."

Ah, the girlfriend. Right. Wo had met her only once, and he had been very rude to her. Granted he promised he'd be better now that he knew his younger brother was dating her, but he hadn't made the move to introduce them. He wasn't even sure he wanted to meet her, and he knew Con was worried about introducing them again.

Wo was big on solidarity, Con was worried that Wo would continue to dislike Tani simply because Rowan did. Wo told him he'd give her a chance, that most of his aggression towards her had been because he deemed her attitude and continuance to try and suss out Rowan's powers disrespectful, but Con hadn't pressed them meeting again. That could have been because Wo was busy, he just wasn't sure that was the reason.

"Has she gotten a hold of you today?"

"No," Con said carefully. "Uhm… how sideways has this case gone?"

"Uh… from what I gleaned from my convo with McGarrett and talking to Adam, they found a boat adrift, everyone aboard is dead, looks like the like culprit is a very contagious, very fast acting bio-weapon." He paused to let Con swear and then got back into it. "Toxin is unknown but on it's way to a lab to be examined. Antidote unknown, Steve and his team are quarantining on the boat so they don't infect more people."

It was very noble of them. Wo probably wouldn't have been that noble, he would have wanted a quarantine zone in a hospital. More sedation drugs there.

"What does he want you to do?" Con asked. "Help you track down the Antidote? Does that mean you're in Hawaii?"

"Not yet," Wo said. "He wants me to sit on Ro. He wants me to keep her from figuring out what shit he's in, and then I'm guessing, he'll want me to stop her from portaling to him when she inevitably finds out… because I can turn her off."

Con was quiet a moment before whispering: "Is she… did he leave her alone? Isn't Junior with her?"

"No, Junior's with him," Wo said.

"Why didn't he tell me she was going to be by herself?" Con cried.

Wo felt his eyebrows furrow in confusion. "Uh… because you two aren't talking?"

"I mean yeah… but she's still a sitting duck… I'd still watch out for her… just… not in the house with her… from a far…"

"You're ridiculous. Look I'm going to have her pull me down, so I'll be sitting on her, you won't have to worry about that…"

"You want me to help the Five-0's with the antidote?" Con asked. "Does Steve have everyone with him? Who's working on this?"

"I think he's got one… I don't know his name. I've met him before though, likes his cigars. Adam's with him, they're working on it."

"They at the Palace?"

"I think so," Wo said carefully. "I was just going to ask you to be ready to help if they can't find it, if it looks like they might need some… help."

"Fuck that, most of their team is out of commission, I'm gonna go help now. The quicker they find that antidote the better, right?"

"Right, well… uh… keep me posted on your progress I guess."

"Sure, good luck keeping Ro entertained."

"Thanks, I'm going to need it," Wo said warmly and then softly cleared his throat. "You uh… you be careful too, eh? Don't catch this bug yourself."

"You know I'm always careful," Con said and then he hung up the phone

Wo was going to have to steel himself for the next part, so to get himself ready and he shot a text off to his girlfriend. He warned her that something might come up and to be ready to just go with whatever came next.

Then he called his sister.

"Hey," she said the second she picked up. "I was just going to text you."

"Yeah? You okay?"

"Yeah," she said right away. "I just… something feels wrong. I texted Steve but he says he's okay just busy, Nahele's fine too. So I'm guessing it's you… or maybe… it might be Con… you could text him and ask?"

Oh dear. The strings were trying to reach out. Steve's lies might be found out soon.

"No need, he's fine, it's me," Wo said.

"You? What's wrong? Did you get hurt?"

He hated that she sounded so upset. Hated it because he was lying to her and at some point she was going to figure that out and be mad at him. But he pushed that aside and kept going.

It was for her own good after all.

"I'm physically fine. Jian and I are in the middle of an argument though, I think… I think I really fucked up this time. I think she's finally done with me. Any chance that you could maybe… I unno help?"

"Fucked up? What did you do?"

Yes what did he do? Considering he and Jian weren't actually arguing and he was making this up on the go he'd have to figure out a reason for her to be mad at him.

But he had time for that.

"If it's alright I'd like to talk about it in person. I know you're not supposed to be using your powers but could you…"

He didn't even have to finish the sentence. Static hissed through the room and he thanked her. He hung up the phone and walked to the door where the portal was waiting for him.

Now all that was left was hoping that he could keep her suitably distracted.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

They had a lot of free time on that boat.

Steve started by having all of them help get the bodies out of the sun and down below somewhere.

They talked shop about what they thought happened. They all figured that this was a test. A controlled area, a group of people, all away from prying eyes, perfect way to test a bio-weapon of some sort.

They had gotten some bad news since then.

Monique had woken up, she told them what had happened. She had not seen much, she had gone into her cabin to sleep, woke up to a commotion on deck. She saw Marko with a gun, a man she said was friends with the owner of the Boat, Nathan. He wasn't on the original manifesto, he had been dropped off by another boat part way through the voyage.

Either way he was the one with the gun, he was the one fighting with the passengers, she thought he was there to rob them, but she didn't want to stick around to find out what was happening. So she got in that life raft and paddled away.

So, while it was good that she survived and hadn't been infected, it wasn't of any use for them.

CDC had also managed to establish what the virus was, which was basically a chimera virus. A hodgepodge of all the worst qualities of other viruses. They were guessing Steve and his team had about 8 to 10 hours before those symptoms would get worse and eventually kill them.

That wasn't a lot.

Also, as this was a newly created chimera virus, there wouldn't be a known antidote… unless the creator of the virus had made one. Either was, if they couldn't have a ready-made antidote, it would take months for the CDC to synthesize something. And they most certainly did not have months.

So.

You know.

Not good.

Steve had heard from Wo Fat though, he had Rowan sufficiently distracted and Con had agreed to help out Lou and Adam with tracking down the antidote. Steve felt a little better though. Not by much, because if Lou, Adam and Con couldn't find that antidote… well… Steve didn't want to think about it, but he was basically going to be abandoning his family.

He wasn't going to see his son being born. He wouldn't be there for Nahele. Rowan would be all on her own.

It was a lot to think about and he didn't want to, because that wasn't the future he had ever envisioned for any of them and if he did, his heart rate would kick up. He didn't want the strings to warn Rowan about this, not yet.

Of course if he actually thought this wasn't going to end well, he'd call her to say good-bye, but he didn't want her stressed about this. He didn't want her trying to get to him.

Lou had called to update him and brought up two very good points. If anyone could find this antidote instantly, it would be Rowan and her strings. And that was true, but then she'd be involved, she'd be stressing out the baby when the prenatal doctors had told her not to stress anymore. She'd want to get the antidote herself, she'd want to see Steve, he didn't trust her not to walk through a quarantine zone to see him herself.

The second point was more useful. He mentioned that all the bodies were accounted for except for Marko's. That left them with the question, where was he?

Either the passengers over powered him and threw him overboard, or he had his accomplices pick him up. It was Lou that reminded him that there was a third option, and that was he was still on the boat.

Lou had been right. They found Marko in the chemical store room of the boat, in a hidden hatch under the stairs. He was partially burned and he had a briefcase with him.

That brief case has 27 little vials of that toxin in it, and one of the bottles was broken. So that was how the pathogen got leaked.

The new theory was that Marko was going to sneak those vials onto the island, there was enough there to cause major casualties after all.

But he hadn't died from the virus, though. He had gone up in flames, they were thinking from that shot off flare gun that Danny had found.

So if the fire had gotten him and not the virus that meant that he had immunity. And if he had immunity then that meant that there was an antidote out there somewhere.

They would just have to find it.

And fast.

And preferably before Rowan found out what was happening.

It had now been three hours and forty-one minutes since they had been infected. Less than seven hours left if they were lucky.

Steve was trying to hold out hope, but as he got more and more lethargic, it was starting to slip from him.

He and Junior had looked everywhere, literal tore that boat a part. There was no antidote. Marko didn't have it on him, it wasn't hidden in the briefcase, it wasn't anywhere on that boat.

He went looking for comfort and found Danny. It wasn't the best, but it was all he had.

"Hi," he said as he dropped onto the plush couch beside Danny.

"Hey," he said back. "Any lucky?"

He was asking about the antidote. And no. He had not had any luck.

"Junior and I looked everywhere. There's no antidote on this boat. Marko must have taken it before he boarded."

It wasn't good news, but he couldn't lie to him.

"I'm gonna go ahead and file that under the really, really bad news, more bad news."

Steve turned to Danny, looked him up and down and figured that Danny was probably feeling as shitty as Steve was. And not just about the situation. Steve was starting to get sweaty, and sore and just… heavy.

Danny didn't look much better.

"How you holding up?"

"Uh, what are the, uh, initial signs of the virus again?"

"Fever, muscle pain, dizzinesss," Steve listed.

"Yeah, I got all that, check, check, check," Danny whispered. Steve nodded, yeah, he had all of those too.

The phone in his hand rang and Steve sighed. Another update from Lou.

"Do me a favour," he said to Danny. "Try not to die before I get off this call."

He was hoping Lou had some better news for him.

He kind of did. He confirmed that Con was there with them. That he was all decked out with the rabbit mask in his back pocket. They were all unsure how he got into the Palace packing as much heat as he was. He didn't use Rowan's powers but he had just been there at the smart table waiting for them when they got back from the hospital.

He had been the one making the calls apparently. He was the one that found out, through his own connections, that Marko wasn't Marko, but a man named Andreas Kozlov. He had been in charge of Ukraine's bio-weapon department until he vanished with product form the lab.

He had been missing for six months before he showed up on the Serenity attempting to get onto American soil with the virus in tow.

It was while they were on that call that they realized that the evidence and Monique's story weren't matching up.

She thought it was a robbery, they thought she got off that boat before the virus got out. But what she was describing was the passengers fighting with Marko because he had infected them.

That combined with a money trail that led back to her and Kozlov, they figured that she was lying to them.

She wasn't just in on it. Kozlov had paid her to help him get onto the island.

She could know where the antidote was.

The second they made that jump Lou and Adam had to chase after Con who had basically just walked away without telling them again. He was already on his way to get her to tell him all that she knew about this toxin, the man who made it and where the hell the antidote was.

And heaven help her if she didn't want to cooperate.
