Chapter 439

With Monique gone, Grover and Adam had no choice but to go back to the Palace. They had to practically force Sin Nombre in the car as he had been certain he could figure out where she went. They gave him 10 minutes, and when he couldn't spot her, or track her, they got him back into the car and drove back to the Palace.

They'd find her from there, Grover had promised him but they could tell that Sin Nombre was annoyed.

He wanted to be out there tracking this girl down himself. But so far, despite texting away, he hadn't gotten any answers.

Until they were discussing why she could have run that is.

"It seems pretty obvious," Sin Nombre suddenly said, interrupting their brainstorming session. "This is a standard buyer has asked for the money back situation."

Jerry, Grover and Adam turned to him and just stared at him.

"What?"

"How is that pretty obvious?"

"Well, let's see. Someone has paid her a bunch of money to get this virus onto this island, right? The virus has not made it on the island. That means who ever paid her is not getting what he wanted out of this deal AND law enforcement is aware of the situation. Clearly this whole operation is a bust and he's out the cash, and no doubt feels like he shouldn't be. So yeah, it kinda makes sense that whoever this is, they'd ask for that money back."

"And you got all of that by how she left?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Because," Sin Nombre said with a sigh. "She left before she realized we caught onto her. As far as she knew she was safe. She left in a hurry and she left worried enough to kill a nurse to get out of here. She's been told to return the money ASAP or else. Guaranteed."

"So we need to figure out where that money came from."

They turned back to Jerry who was frantically swiping at the smart table. "I've tried everything, but I keep hitting a wall in this trace. The furthest I get is this bank in Zurich, which was the source of the five hundred thousand wire that Monique received. But no one will talk to me."

"We got to find a way to make them talk to us, Jerry," Grover said.

"Yeah. Well, Swiss banking laws are as tough as they come," Jerry snapped back. "Maybe we can get the State Department involved, but that'll take time."

Grover shook his head and then turned to Sin Nombre who was once again fiddling with his phone. "You got any pull with banks?" he asked and Sin Nombre shook his head. "What about big bro, he seems to know everyone…"

"He's busy with Ro," Sin Nombre said. "I keep texting but he hasn't responded."

He sounded almost bitter about it.

Adam thought about it a moment and then said: "Jerry, what's the name of the bank?"

"Odermatt bank in Geneva," he said right away. "Why?"

Adam sighed. "Give me 20 minutes," he said and then he turned and completely froze. They all did.

Adam looked around and then turned back to Grover. "Where the hell did Sin Nombre go?"

They all looked around, into all of the offices and everything but Sin Nombre was gone.

"Well that's not good," Grover said. "You do your thing, Adam, I'll see if I can track the assassin down."

Then they all split ways, and while Adam found them a lead, they couldn't find Sin Nombre.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

They had had a nice brunch after figuring everything out. Rowan had tried to back out of it, to give Wo and Jian some alone time, but Wo needed her to come with them, and Jian picked up on that. She insisted that Rowan come with them, if only because she loved breakfast food. It was pretty easy to convince her from there.

Rowan had even helped Wo and Jian go through everything to see if there were some things he'd actually want to keep. They agreed on a few decor pieces and the bedding they had bought together for the bed.

Jian had also penned down all the matching sets she wanted to get with him. Matching watches, matching pajamas, matching slippers, matching robes, and, of course, matching mugs.

He was both very grateful she had helped, and quite annoyed as he wasn't sure there really was a problem there until he had to make one up to distract his sister. Or, at least, it wasn't as big before Rowan got involved.

Now he was going to have to buy a lot of matching sets of things, and while, personally, he thought it was stupid, watching Jian beam at just the thought of matching Pajamas made it worth it.

He said good-bye to Jian and then joined Rowan back in Hawaii, knowing he'd have to find another way to distract her and he was running out of things to do.

All attempts to find out how this case was progressing was met with: "Not well," which was not good. Steve had been on that boat at least five hours now and he was running out of time.

Maybe he was going to have to tell Rowan what was going on. Have her look at the strings and pinpoint where that antidote was and then go and get it himself.

He'd need to call Con for that.

But first he'd send a text off to Steve asking how he was feeling and he'd go from there. If Steve was still fine he'd continue with distracting, if not he'd get Rowan involved.

The door shut behind him and he turned to her. "Alright, well thank you for all your help… I uh… I have the rest of the day off did you want…"

"You weren't the problem," Rowan said suddenly and Wo Fat paused. "No something else is wrong…" she went for her phone. "I haven't heard from Steve all day…"

"Ro… come on now, you know what he's like when he's on a case."

"He's been super attentive since I got pregnant," she said and Wo Fat paused, head tilted to the side like that comment confused him.

"Really? I would have thought he wouldn't have really cared if he had a case."

That was the wrong this to say because she was now staring at him a frown on her face. "Something's going on, isn't it? Something with Steve."

"Rowan…"

"It would explain the fake argument…" Wait! She knew the argument was fake? Her eyes shifted as she opened up her void sense. "It would explain why I've been feeling off all day. His strings have been muted recently, I think he's doing it on purpose…" she muttered. He watched her concentrate, like really concentrate and then frown. "I can't get a good grip on him… but… ooh… Danny doesn't look good…"

Oh shit!

Steve might have been masking his strings but Danny sure as hell wasn't. Wo Fat reached out right away. He got one hand onto her and shut her down.

The second she lost sight of the strings her eyes focused in on him, set in an ice queen glare.

"You shut me down," she hissed. "You know what's going on… don't you? You and him are working against me again!"

Wo Fat frowned at that. "That's not… okay, it kind of is, but… we needed to!" he cried. Rowan just glared at him, that ice queen look in her eyes starting to making him a bit nervous. "Okay, now, before you freak out…"

"You two are absolutely ridiculous. What is it? What did I miss?"

"I need you to promise to stay calm…"

"You have five seconds to tell me what the fuck is going on or I'm popping us straight to Steve…"

"NO!" he shouted reaching out to grab her again before she could power up. "You can't…"

Her eyes flew down to the hand he had on her and that ice queen glare was replaced with concern.

"Is he in danger? Is it really bad?" she asked. "Cause I have shields."

"Not from this," he snapped. Then he paused. "Actually I don't know if that's true… Maybe your shields would work against it…"

"No more riddles, what is going on Wo?"

Wo Fat stared at her, really stared at his sister, knowing that if he did this, if he told her, the rest of his day was going to be dedicated to saving Steve from himself. Again.

"Your husband got himself exposed to a very dangerous, very contagious pathogen." Rowan blinked her eyes at him. "We're trying to locate an antidote, but uh… he wanted me to make sure you didn't go to him… because you know… it's contagious."

Rowan's eyes were wide with horror as she digested what he said.

"I don't remember a chimera virus…" she whispered. Yeah, he hadn't used that word. Where had she gotten that term? "I wasn't… I didn't even dream that…"

"I have Con with the rest of the Five-0s…"

"Is it just Steve? Is he all by himself? No… cause Danny… he's alone with Danny? That's not better!"

"No. It's uh… It's Danny, Tani and the SEAL that sleeps on your couch, I can never remember his name."

"So Grover's the only one that didn't get it?" she asked. "He's trying to solve this all by himself?"

"I just said Con was there."

"You know Con's not there to solve the mystery he's there to shoot people," she snapped.

That might have been true if Tani wasn't involved. Wo was pretty sure he wanted to help his girlfriend. But as Rowan was still pissed Con was dating her in the first place, he figured he shouldn't bring that up.

"They also have Adam, so… you know… they're not on their own."

Rowan shook her head. "How long has it been?"

"Uhm… probably a little over 5 hours."

"And it kills within ten."

"You've already got the void open?" Wo asked, because he hadn't felt the shift and he normally did.

"Not all the way," she said with a sigh. "You explained and it all kinda came at me."

"Right well… as I said, Steve just wanted to keep you safe. I just wanted to keep you safe," he said. He felt the shift then, as she opened the void properly took a look at the strings.

"They have this Rowan…"

"We need to get the antidote to them before the storm hits," she said.

"What storm?"

But Rowan didn't answer. She shut her void sense down and said: "Text Con. I know how to find it."

"Really? That… that quick?"

"Yes, that quick," she snapped. "I have a plan, and I need both of you for it. Let's go."

Wo Fat almost sighed, yeah… he probably should have just got Rowan involved right off the bat.

He really had to stop listening to McGarrett.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Despite losing Sin Nombre they managed to find the buyer without him. Adam worked his magic and in less than 20 minutes he had a name and with that Jerry got them an address.

They got to the address, HPD met them there and they broke into the man's apartment and found him sitting wide eyed on the couch, drink in hand. It kinda looked like he had just been through hell and back, not physically but mentally.

He had jumped when they kicked the door in, but otherwise just kind of looked at them with nothing short of distress in his eyes.

Grover shouted his designation at the man, told him he was under arrest and he had just sighed and said: "Okay."

He put the drink down and Grover got to the crux of the matter.

"Where's Monique Sims?"

They were expecting him to play hardball. You know, pretend he didn't know what they were talking about, making Grover tell him all that they knew.

Instead his eyebrows furrowed and said: "You're looking for Monique too?"

Grover froze and turned back to Adam and Jerry who were both standing there looking confused.

"Wait… wait…" Grover said. "Someone's already asked you about her?"

"Yes, two, two people, they came, they were just here, they asked… they were looking for Monique specifically."

Well that didn't bode well.

"Did you tell them where she was?"

"No. I uhm… no they wanted me to call her… tell her where to meet me… but it's going to be them there."

"Do you know these people? Who they are? What they want the antidote for?"

"They… I know them. Not personally but I know of them, everyone knows of them, you don't work on this island without his permission."

That was Wo Fat.

Wo Fat said that all the time, people don't work on his island without his permission.

"Wo Fat was here?"

The man nodded emphatically. "Yes… Yes…"

Adam and Grover exchanged glances. "And… you said there were two people here, who was the other person?"

"Uh… he has a man that works for him. An assassin, he's known for being efficient and… he'll kill anything."

"So he had Sin Nombre," Grover asked. "Not a girl?"

"No… you know them too?"

"We do."

"Then you should know… if they're after the virus too then you're truly fucked. You won't be able to stop them, I won't be getting my money back… who know what he wants with that virus and antidote. I didn't even realize he was in Hawaii… I thought he was going clean…"

Yeah, they had definitely mentally fucked this man up. Grover kinda wanted to know what Wo Fat had even said to the man, cause it was clear they hadn't had to physically hurt him to get him to cooperate. They had to figure, if Wo Fat was with Sin Nombre, then Rowan had to be involved. Wo Fat wouldn't have left Rowan on her own.

"Where did they send her?"

"There's a bus bench on the corner of Kahili and Lorrin. They told her to meet there in thirty minutes."

"How long ago were they here?"

"About fifteen minutes ago?"

Adam and Grover exchanged glances again and then took off.

That was not good, and the chaos siblings had a head start.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

It had been five hours and forty-eight minutes since they had been infected and they were all feeling it a little too much at that point.

Danny was really, really feeling it. Everything was achy, and sore. He was dizzy and tired and so fucking annoyed.

He was determined to be comfortable in what he was guessing would be his last hours. So he found himself an expensive bottle of champagne, a good CD, an even better blanket then the last one and the retired to a lawn chair out on one of the lido decks.

He figured he'd relax, drink and soak up the son. Anything to chase the fever chills away.

But as he was sitting there drinking his champagne out of a champagne flute, he didn't feel any better, no he was starting to feel worse and worse.

Steve slowly came out on the lido deck, moving stiffly, he too clearly feeling the same symptoms as Danny. He couldn't help but be slightly impressed that Steve hadn't fully panicked yet and just called Rowan to get help.

He was even more impressed that Rowan hadn't shown up by now. Sure, Steve's strings were muted, but Danny wasn't even trying. Normally she felt it if all of them were in trouble, even Danny.

She must not have checked in, which was entirely unlike her.

"You raided the bar," Steve said once he was sitting in the lawn chair that had been empty beside Danny.

"Yeah. Fancy booze, I don't wanna let it go to waste. I figure I'll be dead before the hangover kicks in anyhow, right?"

"Not right," Steve said. "Ro said you get shot, not killed by a killer flu."

"Well, she clearly forgot to dream about this."

Steve shook his head, reached for that bottle Danny had resting on the ground by his chair and brought it to his lips. Danny watched him take a long swallow.

"Do you want a paper bag or something?"

Steve had no idea where this was going, but he knew from the tone it was leading to a bitch fest. "What?"

"That's a very expensive bottle of champagne and you're drinking it like a wino. You're disgusting. Spitting all in the bottle and everything, what's the matter with you?"

"Sorry, so, I just wanna get this straight. You're worried about my cooties now?"

Danny sighed, rolled his eyes but did say: "That's a good point."

Steve took another long swig and this time Danny didn't stop him or complain. When he was done, he rested his head back against the back of the chair. Worry was etched across his face and suddenly Danny wasn't just feeling sick, he was feeling bad.

This had to be wearing on Steve, he worried so much about Rowan regularly, this had to be compounding everything. Sure, he thought it was stupid that he was trying to keep the only person they knew who could find that antidote with a snap of her fingers, because at this rate they were going to die, but he still wanted to help.

Steve had Wo Fat to distract Rowan, but who did Steve have to distract himself?

Well, now it was going to be Danny.

"You know, uh, I've, uh, I've been doing some thinking. And I... uh… I wanna tell you something."

"Don't, just… let's not okay?" Steve asked. He figured this was the I'm about to die, let's get emotional and sappy speech and he just didn't want to hear it. "I know."

"You know what? I haven't said anything."

"I know what you're gonna say, I feel the same way, alright? But Danny, let's not do that. I don't wanna do that."

"You feel the same way about putting a waiting room in our restaurant?"

Steve's eyebrows furrowed. "What?"

"I think most restaurants don't have like a nice waiting area, you know?" he said. "You show up, standing around waiting for a table, it's crowded, you're bumping into people, people coming out of the kitchen with plates. You feel like a schmuck standing there. You're all jammed up. It could be nice, maybe we have a nice little, you know, waiting area, not like just a waiting area, you make it like a feature, you know?"

Okay that was not where Steve thought it was going to go, but he nodded anyway. "Yeah… yeah. It's like a waiting room you want to wait in, right? Because everybody knows that our joint's gonna be, uh, gonna be jumping all the time."

"Yeah, yeah, you know, a couple of club chairs or something. A little table next to it, you put your hors d'oeuvres, put your drinks. Nice."

"We could have one server, one waitress who is just… that's her area, you know what I mean? No one else… "

"That's not really economically feasible,' Danny said interrupting Steve's train of thought.

Steve was just done arguing. "Oh, you're right, it's not." He took a deep breath before continuing. "It's a great idea, Danny. I really, uh… I really like it."

"You know, back there… with that I know and I feel the same way… you meant I love you right? You thought I was going to say something emotional about being your friend and working you and how much you mean to me, right?"

"It's not that long of a stretch, Danny," Steve said with a sigh and Danny nodded.

"Ro's right, you tell me you love me way too much," Danny said after a moment and Steve bit back the urge to cuss him out. Rowan had only started complaining about that recently and Steve was adamant it was happening because of her pregnancy hormones. That's it. "She keeps complaining that you say it to me more than her, and here we are, about to die and instead of calling your wife, who'd probably find that cure instantly, you're trying to tell me you love me."

"Danny… Danny… shut up," Steve snapped. "Just. Shut up."

They sat in silence for a bit, Danny took another sip out of his champagne flute. In the distance came a boom of thunder and Danny sighed. Yeah, that was just their luck.

He turned a dry glare out onto the horizon and found it dark with looming grey clouds coming at them.

He pointed to it and then turned back to Steve. "That's not good, is it?"

He didn't say anything, but the look on his face didn't need to be translated. No. No it was not.

Like this day could get any worse.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

HPD with Grover and Adam showed up at that bench by the bus stop completely surprised to find Monique Sims sitting there.

The chaos siblings had a head start, how had they gotten there first?

Monique, however, had heard the sirens, saw the squad cars pull up, saw Grover heading forward and immediately stood up.

Yep, that wasn't good.

"Monique get down on the ground, right now!" Grover shouted.

But she didn't listen, she turned out, bag of money in her hand and just sprinted away.

Shit.

Really not good.

Grover had no choice but to chase after her, with Adam following.

Monique went in behind a couple of warehouses and there was a sudden scream. Two of them actually.

One was one of rage, the other was a cry of surprise.

Grover followed the sounds, and when he turned the corner he found Monique Sims on the ground with Rowan on top of her.

Both Wo Fat and Sin Nombre were there. Wo had clearly been in a suit at one point, but the jacket was gone. He was in his grey waistcoat and slacks, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar and his sleeves rolled up, heavy artillery gun in his hand.

Sin Nombre looked the same as when they saw him. Leather jacket, white tee-shirt black jeans, except now he was wearing his white rabbit mask and he had a pistol in his hand and what looked to be a high powered rifle strapped to his back.

Both of them were just staring at Rowan as she bashed her fists into Monique's face.

"Tell me where it is!" she was shouting. "Tell me where it is!"

They couldn't see Sin Nombre's face but they figured he was wincing just like Wo Fat was.

"Uh… Ro she can't really answer you if you're…"

Ro whirled on him, roaring in this animalistic way, sparks of orange flew off her like little fireworks and Wo Fat backed away.

They all stood there watching as Rowan turned back to Monique and then slammed her hand down onto her chest, right above her heart. "You tell me where that antidote is or I swear to god I will pull your heart out of your fucking chest and show it to you!"

Wo Fat's wince deepened, he glanced up to Adam and Grover who were watching it happen and then sort of half laughed in a nervous sort of fashion

"Pregnancy hormones are a bitch," he said to them and then sort of half stepped forward to look at Monique over Rowan's shoulder. "I'd uh… I'd tell her what she wants to know, I don't think I can stop her from hurting you if she decides to do it… or don't… I don't really care what she does to you."

Monique stared at Wo Fat, her eyes darting between him and Rowan who was still seething above her.

"You have five seconds to decide," she snarled.

Monique clearly decided that Rowan was not to be messed with, because she told her where it was.
