Chapter 444

"What's the ETA Tani?" Steve called.

It seemed like it had been forever since Bomb Squad had gotten there and nothing was happening. Why were they just sitting around doing nothing? Why weren't they helping? Why hadn't they gotten them out yet?

Danny's breathing was getting worse, he was drifting in and out of consciousness, talking nonsense. He didn't have time for them to be sitting around and planning. He needed them to act right then and there.

"They're trying to figure out what kind of bomb is on the door," she called back. Goddamn where was Rowan couldn't she just have a vision?

"Where's Ro?" he called cause this was taking too long.

"She made a phone call and disappeared," she called back. "They took an x-ray of the bomb and they're going to get back to me."

For fuck sake!

"Don't tell me that Tani!" he shouted. It wasn't fair, he knew that, but he was panicking and he didn't care.

God, he just wanted to get out of this room. He wanted to tell his wife he didn't care if she used her powers, that he didn't care if there was a whole bomb squad and swat team as witnesses. He wanted a portal opened so he could roll Danny out of that room.

Above him something started to clatter. He looked up, the only thing remotely close to him on the ceiling was the air duct. Why the hell would that be shaking like that? What the hell was making that noise?

The rattling got louder, a familiar tug hit his chest and his stomach fell down to the floor.

No, this wasn't happening now. Out of all the things he wanted his her to do. THIS WAS NOT ONE OF THEM.

And then a body came crashing out of the vent, one that was surrounded by an actually bubble of sheer orange. Steve only got a glimpse of it as, with that bubble as plaster came loose and rained down on them, but he was pretty sure he knew who that was.

Steve stared at his pregnant wife who seemed entirely too calm for what she had just done. There was a pop that sent the debris and dust flying again and a scowl touched his lips as it all began settle once more and he heard his wife coughing.

"Really Ro?" he asked.

Rowan, who had landed on her feet thanks to the bubble she had encased herself in, went about dusting off her pants and shoulders and then looked around. There was the sound of a smaller clatter above them and she held out her hand for her to catch the utility belt that fell from out of the vent. She had loaded it with the missing tools and her phone which she was pulling out of the pocket.

She then turned to him, a triumphant smile on her face that all but faded as she took him in. She pointed at him and said: "What the fuck did you do to your hair?"

Steve groaned. "Rowan this is not the time."

"Not the time? Steve I literally saw you this morning, what the fuck did you do?"

"Rowan!"

"Right, fine we'll talk about it later. Keep putting pressure on it," she said as she turned away to rush back to the front door. What the hell was happening?

Rowan smiled at Tani who was going between looking at the ceiling and looking at Rowan, even the Bomb Squad captain was staring at her in absolute abhorrent shock.

Rowan just smiled at them. "Give me a second," she said. She used her phone to take a picture and then sent it to Wo Fat. She counted to ten before dialing him.

"What the fuck Ro?" was his greeting.

"Hypothetically… how I would disarm that?" she asked.

"Hypothetically? You sent me a picture of a bomb that you very clearly took yourself cause I can see your reflection in the glass and the bomb squad outside. You tell me what's happening right now!" he ordered.

"Okay… I may have broken into the quarantined section of the hospital where they're holding Steve because Danny got shot and there's a bomb on the door. How do I disarm it?" she asked.

Wo Fat was silent for a moment, but when he did speak his voice, though nothing but a whisper, held a dangerous edge that seemed to worry everyone else except Rowan.

"Did you call Con?"

"Of course not, he's probably still sleeping," Rowan responded. "And what good would he do against a bomb?"

"What good am I?" Wo Fat cried and, well, he had a point. "Where the hell is McGarrett?"

"Busy keeping Danny alive! HOW DO I DISARM THE BOMB? I swear I'm just gonna hit it!" she shouted at him.

"NO!" he, the bomb squad expert and Tani shouted at the same time, Tani then added: "It's got a pressure sensor, remember, it'll go off!"

"Okay so what do I do?" she asked again.

"You'd need to stay as far away from that thing as possible!" Wo Fat cried. "The professionals are there leave it to them!"

"Danny doesn't have that kind of time," she cried. "I perfected winged eyeliner I can do this. Now talk me through it!"

For a moment they heard nothing but the sounds of scrambling from the phone. After a moment Wo cried: "I'm on my way, just give me the time, okay?"

"I don't have time."

"I will literally be there in 10 minutes."

"Make it 5 or I'm going to try it by myself."

"My god I hate you."

She hung up the phone and then smiled at them. "Any ideas you want me to try while we're waiting?" she asked and got a shout of NO thrown at her from all corners of the room and the Bomb Squad.

Seconds later Grover was back at the door where he did a double take upon spotting Rowan on the other side of the door.

"What the fuck?!" he cried but Rowan just waved at him.

"She came out of the ceiling…" Tani said sounding honestly shocked.

Grover took that in and then sighed heavily. "Your brother's going to kill me."

Yeah, and he was probably going to try and kill her too.

Well, if he wanted to kill her he'd have to get her out of that room first.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

It was supposed to be a good day.

He had a day off. He'd be meeting his pregnant fiancée at the airport, Con was going to stay over with Rowan that night so they could get his house all to themselves.

He had dinner planned, had been practicing cooking with Rowan to wow Jian for this night. He had an outfit that Con helped him pick out, even though he didn't need him to. He had so much sex planned.

Then he got that call from his sister and just like that his day was completely derailed.

He had woken up a bit when she had woken up, but had been lulled into a false sense of security. She had been so good as of late, and he figured she was just making breakfast for them, so he had gone back to sleep.

Then she had called him that first time and realized that she had left the house. Okay, not that big of a deal, she did have that routine of taking Nahele to school and then going to see Steve, he figured her still at the hospital.

So he texted his brother and told him to go and find her.

He got an "Aces" text and a thumbs up emoji from Con and Wo had gone back to sleep a second time.

Until she had called him again.

He really should have gone to get her himself. Because holy shit had she gone and messed up this time.

So much for being good.

He knew Rowan wasn't lying to him when she said that she'd give him five minutes before she tried to defuse the bomb herself, so he changed quickly and practically sped his way to the hospital.

He really was going to have to ask Five-0 or HPD to give him those sirens and lights you could attach to cars when he was in town. It would really help in situations like this.

He rushed pasted the police barricade, went for the elevator, realized it would take too long and basically rushed up the stairs four floors up to the floor.

There was another set of barricades, SWAT this time. Bomb squad set up along the wall and seemingly doing nothing.

Con had already made it there, Wo heard him before he saw him and, if he was being honest, all he heard was Spanish being shouted.

Yep, that had to be Con.

Wo had to get Grover to let SWAT let him by, and as he got closer he could see his brother was past the first set of quarantine doors shouting at someone.

God he was hoping it was Steve, but he couldn't see Rowan standing with Con. He could see someone with "Bomb Squad" written across his back and Con, but not his sister.

He pushed his way into that small area and saw exactly what it was that Con was yelling at.

It was Rowan.

Rowan standing on the other side of that locked door. In a quarantine unit she shouldn't have been able to get into, and shouldn't have gone into because no one had confirmed if Steve and his team wasn't contagious anymore or not.

For a moment he just stared at her and she stared back at him with those wide blue eyes of hers. The reality of what he was looking at sinking in and then turned to Con who looked like he was about to cry out of sheer frustration and then back to his sister.

Rowan was wincing as he stared back at her. She raised a hand and said: "I can exp…."

"WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, ROWAN?!" he shouted at her before she could even finish the sentence and her winced deepened.

"It was all I could think…"

"How did you even get in there…" he started and then paused and frowned at her. "I told you how to break in, didn't I?"

"You did."

"Why the fuck would you do that?" Con cried.

"She tricked me!" Wo growled at him. "She asked… I thought she was trying to win a bet with McGarrett, not actually break in!" Con threw his hands up in frustration and Wo snarled at him. "I thought you were supposed to be watching her."

"I was sleeping Wo!" Con screamed. "How am I supposed to keep an eye on her if she doesn't tell me when she's leaving?!"

"Okay…"

"And you were with her last night! You two were in the same fucking bed, how the hell did you not realize she had left?"

"The fact that you invite so many people into your bed is weird," Tani muttered to herself. She too was standing beside Rowan. She had her arms folded over her chest and didn't look amused in the least. That could have been the situation, but it also could have been how she didn't really like Rowan. However, because she was so close Rowan heard the muttering, clear as day

Rowan shot a scowl at her. "They're my brothers…"

"Not by blood."

"SO?!" Rowan cried. "Shut up. Steve doesn't care…"

"Yes he does."

"She's right I do," he heard Steve call from further into their room. Wo had to crane to get a good look at him.

He was in there with Danny on a table, Junior beside him and a dead body on the ground. So basically surrounded by typical McGarrett bullshit.

He looked different though. Wo couldn't place how, just that he did.

The second he had spoken though, Rowan had immediately whirled around on him. "You have some fucking nerve considering what the fuck you did to your head!"

"It's hair Rowan. It's just hair!"

Ah, yes, now he could see what the problem was. Steve had shaved his head. Now that he was looking at it, Wo could see why his sister was mad, he looked ridiculous.

"Okay and what's my favourite thing to do, think about when I'm kissing you, or hugging you…"

Steve sighed heavily. "Yeah… but…" "What is it Steve?" "Playing with my hair."

"And what about First breakfast?"

"What the fuck is first breakfast?" Junior asked but both her brothers shook their heads at him.

Steve ignored him. "What about it Rowan?"

"Well what do I hold on to?"

At that Steve sort of half sighed. "… my hair…"

"Right. So If I've got nothing to hold on to…"

"So I wear a hat!"

"Yeah attractive. Steve until your hair grows back you're not getting first breakfast."

For a second Steve crumpled but then he seemingly got a hold of himself. "Okay, Rowan I don't have time for this! Danny is dying and… I mean… if I miss out on first breakfast that's fine we're still going to have sex…"

"I mean… yeah, Steven, but if I'm not getting oral, you're not getting it either."

"Hold on, first breakfast means… oh, I get it," Tani said and both brothers nodded. "Aw, ew, that's gross. TMI. TMI."

It was Con who said: "Yeah they think they're being cute cause he tends to do it either before he goes on a run or after, so it always happens before real breakfast…" he trailed off when he realized everyone was just staring at him, concern painted on their faces. "Yeah, they're nasty.'

Steve's mouth had opened in utter shock. That was one hell of a threat she had just thrown at him.

"Aww… but baby… you have the best blow jobs…"

"If I'm not getting it you're not getting it. Let's hope your hair grows back fast."

It looked like Rowan and Steve were going to continue arguing and honestly he wanted to get off it as quickly as he could.

That meant getting them through the argument as quickly as possible, because he knew neither of them were going to drop it until one of them won.

"Steven she was going see your hair when she saw you next, so like, what did you think was going to happen? How were you going to hide this from her?"

"I wasn't going to hide it I was going to spend the day gradually getting her ready…" he caught Wo's confused looked and scowled at him. "You know what. Fuck you. If you think I'm not going to bitch about this until she starts giving me blowjobs again, you've got another thing coming."

"OKAY!" Tani cried. Interrupting the argument before it could get worse. "If you guys are done with the disgusting domestic argument, we have an actual emergency here. Now, are you done?"

She turned eyes from Rowan, to Wo and then to Steven and all she got was glares from them, but none of them said anything else. So she turned back to the Bomb Squad leader and said: "Please continue…"

Rowan move forward, her hands up heading for the bomb. "I could probably just…" "—NO!" flew at her from Wo, Con and Steven, startling her and everyone else standing near here.

"For the love of god, Wo, don't you dare let her try!" Steve added which won him a scowl from Wo.

"It's not like I'm in the room with her, what exactly do you expect me to do?" he hissed.

Rowan just rolled her eyes. "It would make the most sense!" she said. "Just one little…"

"ROWAN!" Wo thundered and she fell quiet, wounded eyes turned to him and he immediately softened. "Listen… baby girl… we've talked about this. We don't know how you… you know… how it'll affect explosives. It is not the time to figure out what will happen… not with you locked in that room."

Rowan's eyes narrowed at him and Wo knew right away that she was going to argue.

"Besides, too many witnesses," Con added and at that Rowan nodded. Yeah, that's what got her to agree.

Tani's eyes darted between the three of them before finally asking: "What the hell are you people talking about?"

Wo nodded to her right away and said: "See," to her as if to prove her point.

"I got it," she said. "I won't do anything."

"Okay, do you think you could let the professionals work?" Grover asked. "This space is getting cramped and the doctor isn't even here yet."

Grover didn't even dignify him with an answer. He merely turned to Rowan. "Will you be okay if we hang back?" Even though she nodded at him he didn't feel calmed. "You won't try anything stupid."

"Can't, not with Danny hooked up to a monitor and an oxygen tank," she said.

"Right well, we'll be back here, try not to get in the way."

She nodded again and then begrudgingly both Con and Wo moved out of the way, allowing the doctor to take their place so they can talk Steve through what to do.

"Think she'll be okay if Steve has to cut Danny open?" Con asked as they moved away from the quarantine unit.

"Probably not, but they're in the common area, I'm sure Tani or Junior will take her into the sleeping quarters to keep her separate."

"Or she's vomiting on them," Con said and Wo nodded. Yeah, it wasn't going to be pretty either way.

Con leant against the wall across from the unit, his hands dipping into his pockets. Wo might have leant too if he wasn't so agitated about the situation. He hated feeling helpless, and once again his sister had seemingly gotten herself into another situation where he could literally do nothing but sit and wait to see how it got resolved.

He hated it when she did that.

Con sighed heavily, watched as Wo Fat sort of half paced, which was mostly him taking a few steps away pivoting entirely and moving back the way he came.

"This is bullshit," Con told him. He then glanced to the rest of the people milling about, not specifically paying attention to them before lowering her voice. "With what she can do this should be easy."

"It should be," Wo agreed. "But as much as I'd like to do our usual, the one who can walk through walls is stuck in there, and well… we don't have that power so… we're stuck out here. Not that we could anyway. Not will all these witnesses, not with Danny so close, and besides how would we even explain how we got in there?"

Wo went back to pacing and Con seemingly straightened. He turned to look at the wall he was leaning on and then he actually stopped leaning. He looked around at all the walls and Wo came to a stop cause it looked an awful lot like Con had come up with an idea.

"You think all the walls are made of this?" he asked.

Wo watched him knock on the wall and then shrugged. "I mean… probably… why?"

Con was quiet for a moment and then he reared back and slammed his fist into the wall. The motion startled Wo as he hadn't been expecting it. It startled everyone around them too, it had Grover's eyes back on them.

"Hey!" he called. "I know you guys are frustrated but try not to take it out on the walls."

Yeah, cause all they needed was for them to be kicked out before they got Rowan out of that quarantine unit. "Yes, sorry," Wo said, moving towards Con, a single hand dropping to his shoulder. "I'll keep him… I'll… it's fine, I've got this."

Grover seemed skeptical but moved away again, and after a moment all eyes were off of them.

"What the hell, Con?" Wo hissed but he was ignored.

All through this Con's eyes had stayed on the wall in front of him, on the dent in the plaster. There was a crater there, created by webbed cracks. Great, Wo was going to have to pay for that now.

Con turned to him a sort of smirk on his lips. "I have an idea," he said and Wo frowned. He could tell by the look on his face that he wasn't going to like this. "I have an idea… but it's a Ro kind of idea."

Yeah, he was definitely not going to like this idea. He glanced back to quarantine unit his sister was literally stuck in and then turned back to him.

"I'm not going to like this, am I?"

"No, but are you in or not?"

"Of course I am," he said, lowering his voice so no one else could hear him. "Come on, let's talk and walk."

Wo then lead con away, letting the man explain what definitely was the most Rowan plan either of them could come up with.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Steve's arms were starting to shake from all the pressure he had been forced to put on Danny's chest. He could have switched out with Junior but he didn't, he wouldn't. This was his best friend, Danny wouldn't have let him go, he wouldn't have switched out.

Danny, who had landed a plane on his own when Steve had been on death's door, deserved all Steve's effort, and he was going to get it.

He was starting to notice things. Like Danny's chest wasn't rising as much on one side, not rising much at all. His eyes weren't fluttering as much, his words had gotten less and less coherent. Bubbles were starting to appear under his skin, none of that could be normal.

He was fading. Dying right before his eyes. This must have been what Danny felt on the plane, watching Steve bleed out with no way to get him immediate help.

The difference was Steve had someone to help him.

And no, it wasn't the cardio surgeon they were waiting on, or the regular surgeon at the door.

"Ro, Ro come here," Steve said and hesitantly she moved towards him. He knew the sensitively to blood was compounded now with the morning sickness, and normally he would never ask her, but Danny was fading and he was freaking out. "Please help me…"

Rowan came to kneel on Danny's other side. She glanced to where Junior was hovering.

"I don't know if that's a good idea," she said lowly. Steve wasn't surprised she understood what he meant.

"He's dying," Steve hissed.

He watched his wife look down at Danny, felt the shift in the atmosphere as she opened her sense. For a moment the world went to strings and got to see exactly what she saw. How the red strings had created a bubble around them and the stubby little black string floating out in the middle of Danny's chest.

He watched her eyes narrow at it, reach for it, let it coil around her fingers. For a moment it flickered, he watched it splinter off in her hand before she closed off her power and the world returned to normal.

"Can you fix it?" he whispered.

Rowan was quiet a moment, her lips twitched back and forth. "Yes… but… I don't think I'm strong enough right now and…" her eyes darted towards Junior and then Tani and he knew what she meant.

Too many witnesses.

"Junior," he said right away. "Junior go… see if Tani needs help and then get me water?"

Junior had been watching them, had heard the whispers between them, he looked confused. He clearly wanted to know what they were talking about, didn't trust what was happening between them.

For a moment, Steve was sure he'd refuse to move but he eventually did move towards Tani.

"We don't have long, just tell me what to do."

Rowan immediately pulled the nodes off of Danny's chest, then took his hand and put it over Danny's injury.

"All I need you to do is breathe. You're my power source, no panic, no resistance, can you do that?" she asked.

Steve got halfway through the nod and without even a bit of warning the world shifted into strings again. He watched his wife take up that black string again, watched it splinter in her fingers, she carefully looked at all the thin branches before settling on one. Her eyes glowed white again and that one branch thickened. It went white before him, lengthened before wrapping around her wrist before wrapping around his.

Her all white eyes met his and Steve knew that what was going to happen next was going to hurt, but he was going to do it for Danny.

There was no warning for the next bit either. A pulse ran through him, and electric bolts skated up his arms and into his chest as it tightened. It felt like his heart was on fire. Was this how Rowan felt when she did this all the time?

God, why did he let her do this so often?

After this she was never going near the void again.

Somewhere in the background he heard a popping, a tinkling sounds of something fine falling from the ceiling, and the pow of something bigger exploding. All of it was muted, like he wasn't quite in the same room as it. But the shout from Tani wasn't.

"Oh My god! What the hell was that?!"

Steve turned towards where he knew the voice was coming from but he couldn't see her through the fog of strings.

Until they all just dropped away. He was back in reality slightly dazed and confused. He took that time to look around at the room.

The lights were all out. Shards of glass was all over the floor, but none had managed to fall over him, Rowan or Danny. The monitor that had been hooked up to Danny lay on the floor, the screen black like it had been on fire.

"What was that power surge?" Junior asked coming to stand beside her.

Steve glanced at Rowan who wasn't paying attention to them at all and instead was staring at Danny.

He avoided his teammates' eyes to say: "I don't know."

His eyes found Danny who looked about the same, but then he inhaled. Slowly, steady and normally. Steve went for his neck to check his pulse. Weak but steady.

It had worked.

They had pulled him another outcome.

But that relief was entirely short lived when he got the news that Rowan's brothers had a plan.
