Chapter 5: Sophie's secret

Agent BM: Yes it is.

After that day, Sophie became really good friends with Kevin and Lucy. They played during recess, sat together at lunch, and even had play dates on the weekends. Zeke was happy Sophie has made new friends.

It also a good distraction for Sophie, so she would stop worrying about her mom so much.

"So she's got two new friends?" Honey asked over the phone.

"Yes, they're twins. A boy named Kevin and a girl named Lucy." replied Zeke.

"(Coughs), that's wonderful."

"How're you feeling, babe?"

"I'm doing better."

"That's great to hear. We'll come see you soon."

And with that, they hung up the phones. Just then, Sophie came into the room.

"Dad, can I have Kevin and Lucy over on Saturday?" she requested.

"You can if you can get your chores done." Zeke told her.

"No problem."

And with that, she went upstairs to get started.

When Saturday came around, Kevin and Lucy were dropped off by their dad. They rang the doorbell, and Zeke answered it.

"Hello, kids." he greeted.

"Hi, Mr. Shaw."

Kevin and Lucy greeted back. He let them in, and Sophie stood before them.

"Hi guys. Thanks for coming."

"Glad to come, so what do we do first?" Kevin wanted to know.

All day the kids, played board games, watched TV, and played outside. As Lucy was heading back from using the bathroom, she looked at the pictures on the wall. She saw pictures of Sophie, her dad, Zack, and also of some woman.

When she returned to Kevin and Sophie she asked Sophie about it.

"Hey, Sophie is that woman in the pictures your mom?" she asked.

That made Sophie freeze a little.

"Uh, yeah. That's my mom." she explained.

"Where is she?" Kevin wondered.

"She's...at work. She's really busy."

"She works on weekends? She must be pretty busy." Lucy replied.

Luckily Zeke called them all down for a snack and they didn't ask anymore about Sophie's mom.

After a couple more hours of playing, Kevin and Lucy were picked up.

"Next time you'll have to come to our house, Sophie." Lucy said.

"That sounds great." Sophie replied.

And with that, Lucy closed the car door, and they drove off.

"Have fun with your friends, sweetie?" Zeke asked her.

"Yeah, Dad. It was great."

Zeke gave her a warm smile.

The next time they went to the hospital to visit Honey, Sophie told her mom everything.

"I'm glad you made some new friends, sweetie." Honey told her.

"But I still miss you, Mom." Sophie admitted.

Honey hugged her.

"I do too, Sophie. (Coughs), but I'll be home soon enough."

Sophie smiled at hearing that.

"Mama, Mama." Zack said, coming into the room.

"(Giggles), guess it's Zack's turn with you now." Sophie said, getting off Honey's hospital bed.

"Come here, Zacky." Honey urged.

Sophie picked Zack up, and put him on the bed. Then Zeke walked into the room, smiling.

"Well Honey, you seem to be recovering well." he told her.

"Yes, I am feeling better."

This was good for the family.

Another time at school, Mr. Martinez was talking about animals in science class.

"As you can see in the animal kingdom some mothers and babies share a special connection." he explained.

He put on a video, that showed how different animals cared for their babies. As Sophie watched the video, she thought back to her mom. Her mom would tuck her in at night when she was little, whenever she felt scared Honey was there with a warm hug and always made sure she was safe and okay.

Kevin glanced over at Sophie, and saw that she looked like she was about to cry.

"Hey, you okay?" he whispered.

Sophie quickly got herself together, and rubbed her eyes.

"I'm okay." Sophie assured.

Then at lunch the three sat together and began talking.

"So Sophie, when are we gonna meet your mom?" Lucy wanted to know.

"Oh, you'll meet her soon enough, she's still really busy."

"What does she do anyway?" Kevin questioned.

"She works at a store."

"Which one?"

"A store that sells honey supplies."

But before they could ask anything else, the bell rang meaning it was time to go back to class.

"Why do you think Sophie never talks about her mom?" Lucy asked Kevin as they walked down the hallway.

"I don't know." he replied.

Then something came to him.

"What if something's wrong?"

That made the twins looked at each other knowingly.

When school was over, Sophie waited in the pick up stop for her dad. As she did, Kevin and Lucy walked up to her.

"Hey Sophie, can we talk?" Lucy asked her.

"What is it?"

"It's about your mom. We wanna know why you won't talk about her." said Kevin.

Sophie looked taken aback.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"I think you do. You're acting weird." told Lucy.

"I just...don't have much to say about my mom." Sophie grabbed her pearl necklace, and rubbed it.

"Come on you can tell us."

"Is your mom sick?" Kevin questioned.

Sophie just turned away from them.

"Sophie, you're our friend aren't you? You can tell us." comforted Lucy.

"(Sighs) fine, my mom is sick. She's in the hospital." Sophie confessed.

"That necklace, it's your mom's isn't it?" asked Kevin.

"Yes."

"Is she gonna be okay?" Lucy wanted to know.

"She says she's gonna be. But I miss her. She's been in the hospital since I moved here."

"Well hopefully she turns out fine."

"But I want her here. I miss her."

The twins looked at each other sadly. "

Hey, Sophie would you like to sleepover this weekend?" Lucy offered.

That made Sophie smile a little, and agreed. She said she'd ask her dad about it when she got home.

That evening at dinner, Sophie brought up the sleepover invitation.

"So can I, Dad?" Sophie asked.

"I'll have to call Kevin and Lucy's parents, but it's okay with me." Zeke replied, as he fed Zack.

After they finished eating, Zeke gave the twins' parents a call. They talked for a while, and discussed the sleepover. When he got off the phone, he called Sophie and told her that it would be okay if she attended the sleepover.

And that made Sophie very happy.
