While Kuvira was being healed.
Kai brought Jinora into her room. She was not good. After she was violently kicked out of the spirt realm, for an unknown reason, she had been dealing with a throbbing head which didn't do her any favours. After setting her to bed he left and went to find the others. He needed to tell them, he needed to let them know.
He wasn't sure where they were until he heard voices coming from the healing chambers. Running towards the room she burst though it earning unimpressed looks from all. He paused to catch his breath as Kya spoke.
"Kai what are you doing…" she began but he interrupted.
"Vatuu is no longer in the spirit tree," he declared.
The pale looks on everyone's faces was hard to ignore.
Present.
Asami looked over the damaged city. The police airship that Lin had requisitioned was fast, which was the point of them. They needed to get from point A to B fast, which Future Industries gladly provided. But she felt that they were going to need more after this. It wasn't much of a surprise. With the amount of damage done, it was going to take a while to repair. She mead a metal note to talk to Varrick about it.
"Hey you, ok?" Bolin asked as he walked up next to her.
"I'm good," she replied in an unconvincing sad tone.
"No, you're not," he countered, "You've been mopey ever since we couldn't find Korra. So, what's wrong?"
There was a pause as she thought about what to say. Would he spread how she felt? Probably not he wasn't like that. Would it lighten the tightness on her heart? Maybe, she wasn't sure. But it couldn't hurt right? To tell him show she felt right now? He was her friend after all. She was about to tell him when the radio buzzed. Lin walked over to it and picked up the handset.
"Chief Beifong here," she said. "Tenzin? Yeah, yeah, they're here, one sec," she them pressed the open mic function of the radio. "Ok you're on,"
"Thank you, Lin," Tenzin said, his voice cracking over the radio. "So, I've informed Air Temple Island and you need to know as well. I arrived at the prison, they were right Zaheer's gone but the group that went to investigate was infiltrated by someone,"
"What?" Lin barked. "How? Who?"
"It wasn't a member of the Red Lotus," the Airbending master quickly added with Asami and Bolin looked to each other with brow raised. "But what I learned was surprising. First of all, she used bending but according to the guards here, it seemed forced, like she was not used to her powers,"
"Like Bumi?" Bolin said. "He came into his powers late and wasn't used to them,"
Asami picked up on what he was saying. "Yeah, like he helped out with the Red Lotus," she added with Lin nodding.
"Right, according to them, she, for lack of a better word, forced her bending to work. It was sloppy, uncoordinated and poor in terms of technique. But it seems that she had some kind of military training as she managed to take the guards out quickly," he sighed before continuing. "But that's not the best part,"
"Really? I thought that a lone woman who managed to take out a White Lotus guard unit was," Lin muttered, her trademark sarcasm dripping from every word.
"She bent two elements," the airbender said making the room go silent.
Asami felt her chest tighten at those words as Lin just stared at the radio. "H… what?" she stuttered.
"She's not the new Avatar," Tenzin clarified. "She's too old for that to be the case," that eased the tension on Asami's heart, but she still felt worried about what this could mean. "But that's not the only thing. Her description matches Kuvira's description on who she saw with Korra. Blazing red hair, body covered in scars and piercing green eyes,"
Lin nodded as she took out her notebook and wrote those things down. "Where is she?" Asami asked.
"She's headed towards Republic city, so keep an eye out," Tenzin answered. "She may have some answers that we don't,"
"Agreed, we'll keep an eye out," Lin said.
"Stay safe," Tenzin added as the radio went dead.
"This mission just became a little more complicated," Asami muttered as she looked out of the window to the mountains thinking weather or not Korra was still alive.
OOOOO
Korra lay on her belly with the other three on either side of her. The hill covered their shapes as they overlooked a Geth prison. The place liked like some kind of metal insect hive. There were no windows, pillars and pylons rose up from the ground like claws with lights overwatching a perimeter surrounding a central tower. Sections jutted out like the towers foot, which Garrus suspected of holding the people.
The Avatar moved her body slightly, trying to adjust herself as she looked on. She had been in this position for the past half hour and she was not used to this military style of combat. But Garrus had said that they needed to wait to see what happened. She was getting bored, but this was how things were done here, so she waited.
"Contact, 50 meters south west," Samara said pointing to a bug like vehicle approaching.
"Locked, tracking," Garrus said as Korra followed it with her binoculars which Miranda had given her.
She wasn't used to the high-tech specs of the thing, but was taught the basics of how to use it. Looking though it, she saw the hovering bug like truck hovering over the ground as it approached the tower. Again, she couldn't help but be amazed at the heightened technology available and wondered how Asami would react to this. Knowing her, she'd probably be drooling and eager to take it all apart to see how it worked. She smiled thinking about the green eyed firenation beauty. Shaking her head, she focused on the truck as it stopped outside the Gate.
The Geth troopers just looked weird to her. While she got that they were robots, really advanced ones, the way that they moved just looked too natural to her. It was weird. The back of the truck opened up allowing a group of prisoners to walk out in chains.
"Huh weird," Tali muttered.
"Something wrong?" Korra asked.
"Yeah, metal chains like that are rare. Normally groups like s-sec use biotic binders that lock people's arms in place," the Quarrian explained.
"She right about that," Garrus added as he mentally counted. "I've only seen chains like that a few times, mostly in the Commander's Cabin,"
Korra blinked at that. "Why?"
Garrus and Tali stayed silent at that and Korra just shrugged as she continued to watch. She counted 15 prisoners, all of them wearing some kind of unitard that looked tight fitting, restricting their movements. As the last of the prisoner walked out Korra just blinked, unable to process what she was seeing.
"Wow, she's big," Tali muttered.
"Even I know she's a rare one," Samara added.
The last prisoner was at least 6 feet tall, if not slightly taller. Her heavy frame filled out the unitard making her look more intimidating. Her long her and dark skin only added to the effect. Only her freckles made her seem less than intimidating. Recognition hit Korra like Naga running into her at full belt.
"It can't be," she muttered as she lowered the binoculars.
"What?" Tali asked in a confused tone.
"It can't be," she repeated.
OOOOO
General Iroh II waited for the airship to land and the ramp to lower. Once it hit the ground he stood to attention and gave Lin, Asami and Bolin a salute as they walked off the airship.
"It's stood to see that you are all safe," he said as they reached the ground. "We've set up a perimeter as per President Reiko's orders. We aren't sure what the cannon can do,"
"That's fine," Asami said as she pulled out the energy detector. "We're not here for the cannon,"
Iroh nodded. "This way," he said leading the group into the park.
As they walked, the energy reader began to quickly click up as they eared where Korra and Kuvira had their battle. The sprits seemed to keep away from this place which made sense. They didn't want to be dragged into human affairs and as far as they were concerned, the war wasn't over. So, keeping out of it was the best way to survive. Soon they reached the section where Korra and Kuvira battled.
The spirit vine cannon hung in some of the trees, it's platinum sheen reflected some of the light from the setting sun. The device in Asami's hand was giving a loud cracking nose forcing her to turn it off.
"Ok, something's around here," she said looking around while Lin's boot opened up.
She slammed her foot to the ground using her seismic sense to detect anything abnormal. Her eyes opened and she walked over to a place in front of the cannon.
"Over here," she called as she moved to lift some of the dirt out of the way.
"What's that?" Bolin asked as he squatted down looking at a dull black piece.
Lin shrugged. "Not sure," she and Bolin then moved into positions to clear the dirt around the object with Asmi and Iroh backing up to let them do their work.
It didn't take long for the two to clear out the dirt to find a suit of strange looking armour. It was black with a red stripe on the right arm with strange characters on the left breastplate. The four just looked at it with confused and interested looks. Iroh was the forest to move up and squat down to give it a closer look.
"This doesn't look like any armour I've seen before," he said. "It's more streamlined," he reached out with Bolin and the two pulled out so he could get a better look at it. "It's light," he muttered with surprise.
The earth bender nodded. "Yeah, I was expecting this to be… well heavier," he added before knocking the plate. "Doesn't sound like metal…"
This time Lin squatted down and looked at the armour with a frown. She tapped it with a fist before placing her hand on it. Her frown deepened.
"Ok this is weird," she muttered. "It's metal, but not at the same time. It's mixed in with something,"
"Can you bend it?" Asami asked and Lin shook her head.
"The metal is too pure and there's so much in here that I can't bend it," she sighed before looking over the armour and finding something attached to one of the legs. "Huh, what's this?" she reached over and grabbed the red coloured object.
Bolin blinked. "A metal square?" he asked.
Lin was about to answer when it opened up. She almost dropped it, but held onto it and looked it over, blinking on confusion. Iroh got in closer as well looking at it.
"It's some kind of crossbow," he muttered. "That's obviously the trigger, but…."
Asami nodded. "There's no place for the arrow to…" she looked up to the vine cannon then back at the object, her eyes widening. "It's a cannon. Like the spirit vine but smaller,"
A look of concern mirrored on their faces as they looked to one another then at the weapon, unsure what to do. After a while, Iroh held out his hand.
"Let me," he said.
Lin nodded and handed the weapon to him. Iroh took the weapon at what he assumed to be the handle and aimed at a tree. He pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. He pulled again, but again nothing. Bringing it back, he looked it over but could see nothing wrong. Turing it over, he tried to make sense out of the text, but nothing made sense. After a while he shook his head.
"Sorry I don't…" he began but he was interrupted as one of the arms lit up with an orange glow.
OOOOO
"Are you sure?" Samara asked, her tone neutral only betraying the smallest amount of concern.
"There's no doubt about it," Korra replied. "I just… I cannot think of another explanation,"
Tali shook her head, finding what Korra had said hard to believe. "Seems that there's more to this switch then expected,"
Garrus nodded as he opened up his omni-tool. "Miranda, do you read me?" he asked.
The XO quickly picked up. "Miranda here, what do you have Garrus…"
OOOOO
"Miranda here, what do you have Garrus," a voice replied making the four gathered look at the glowing device drop their jaws.
"It's a radio," Bolin said with surprise.
"Who's Miranda and Garrus?" Iroh asked.
Asami reached over and pressed something. "H… hello?" she said.
A pregnant pause seemed to echo for a long time before a familiar voice came on. "Asami? Is that you?"
Tears began to fall across Asami's cheeks. "It's Korra!" Bolin yelled with Lin and Iroh smiling.
OOOOO
"H…hello?" the unknown voice said over the comm.
Garrus, Samara and Tali just looked at the omni-tool with confused looks. "Who was that?" Tali asked.
"That's Asami, one of my friends," Korra spoke excitedly. "How do…" Garrus just moved his omni-tool so that she could speak. "Asami is that you?"
OOOOO
"It's me Korra," she said as she wiped her tears. "It's good to hear your voice,"
"Same with yours," Korra replied.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but who is on this line?" the voice of Miranda came on. "And how did you get on this line?"
"Sorry," Asami quickly replied. "I'm Asami Sato, one of Korra friends. We're at where Korra and Kuvira last fought. We found a suit of armour here buried under the ground,"
"It's a park in my city," Korra clarified to someone, probably Garrus. "One sec…"
All of a sudden, a rectangular section rose up in a blink and Korra's face appeared. The four just blinked. "H…how…"
"It's like a mover," Bolin muttered.
"Hi guy's," Korra smiled with a wave. "From what I understand this is a mover and radio both. You can talk and there won't be a delay,"
"Wow," Asami smiled. "So advanced,"
"Yeah…" Korra smiled. "And that's not even the half of it here," her smile dropped as she looked to someone. "Oh right, ok I've got someone here who wants to talk, just save the questions for later, we don't have the time,"
The police chief looked to Asami. "She's hiding something, but it's not like she's doing it intentionally,"
The CEO nodded. "Anything else," she asked Korra.
"Yeah, try not to freak out too much," the Avatar said.
Asami was about to ask what that was meant to mean when the screen changed to a grey skinned creature without hair, a square face and mandibles. Blue face paint lined his face with a glowing blue piece covering his eye. Bolin was the first to react.
"Gah…what are you?" he yelled backing up.
The creature laughed. "My name's Garrus and I'm a Turian," he said, his mandibles moving with very word. "Can you tilt the arm so I can look at the armour,"
"S..sure," Asami said quickly leaving Iroh and Lin in their stunned silence.
She moved the arm to look at the armour. "Yeah, that's Shepards armour alight," he muttered as she moved to place it back where it was. "I don't suppose she's there?"
"No, she isn't," Asami said. "Whos' Shepard?"
Lin's eyes went wide as she grabbed Asami's arm. "Blazing red hair, piercing green eyes and cars all over her body?" she asked.
Garrus nodded. "That's her, where is she?"
"We don't…." Asami began but an explosion caused them to look away. "We have to go,"
"No problem, get back to us when you can…" Garrus said as she device died and a soldier ran into the area.
"General Iroh sir," the soldier said. "We're under attack,"
"Who? Earth Empire?" Iroh asked as the four stood.
"No," he breathed. "W… we don't know who… but the radio… some kind of metal monsters,"
The four looked to each other before following the soldier out.
