It was a day like any other day at Jake and Chance's garage. Jake was going over their finances, calculating how many more years they had to work in the garage and manage the salvage yard. 'About a thousand years ought to do it, alright.' Jake thought as he rolled his eyes.
Meanwhile, Chance was sitting on the couch, laughing hard and uncontrollably at the antics of "Scardy Cat".
"Hey buddy, you should come take a break and watch this new episode of Scardy Cat. It's too much!" Chance said as he resumed laughing again. Jake rolled his eyes.
"Can't right now, pal. Trying to get our finances in a row here..." Jake said as he continued to do calculations.
Chance shrugged. "Suit yourself.".
They both heard a car roll up to their shop.
'Huh, new customer.' Jake thought as he looked up and saw the car.
A pretty she-cat with red hair stepped out, closed the door and started walking towards the garage with what looked like a metal book. She was wearing a gray suit with a pencil skirt that matched. She was in tiny black pumps. Her hair was all nice and neatly pinned up. Not one hair out of place. Her ears almost matched her hair. Her face had the orange-ish red markings above her eyes as well. Her tail was red with orange stripes through it.
Jake closed everything he was working on and went around the counter to meet her.
"Good morning ma'am. I'm Jake of Jake and Chance's garage. What seems to be the trouble? Your car looks almost brand new."
She looks at him and shakes her head. "Oh, I'm not here for anything auto related. I'm here because Enforcer headquarters sent me."
"Oh...Chance, you might wanna come here for a minute!" Jake yelled out over his shoulder as Chance looked annoyed.
"Is it not something you can handle by yourself buddy? I'm watching new episodes of Scardy Cat!"
"Oh trust me, you're gonna wanna see and hear this." Jake said as Chance rolled his eyes and turned off the TV, coming over to see what the big deal was.
'Now what does he want me to see and hear so bad that I gotta quit watching my show...hello...' Chance stops short of Jake and the she-cat. He took her in and felt his whole body react to her. His heart pounded. He quickly regained his composure, took off his red cap, slicked his hair back with some spit and his hand and walked over, very confidently with his chest puffed out.
"Hi, I'm Chance. Chance Furlong and you must be my next dinner date?" He said, extending his hand to her. She took it and he pulled her to him. He leaned down and attempted to kiss the top of her hand, but she jerked away. She tried to hide the blush.
"Chaaance! She's not a customer!" Jake said, smacking his own face and pulling down slightly.
"Oh...then who is she?" Chance said, looking down at her. The yellow burly tabby was considerably taller than her.
"My name is Vivian Vanfang. Ms. Vanfang will do. I'm here on behalf of Enforcer Headquarters. I've been hired to take stock and inventory of all Enforcer assets and everything on their payroll. This includes your shop and the scrap yard." She said as Jake looked at her and gulped.
'We're going to have to be super careful to make sure she doesn't find the hangar!' Jake started to inwardly panic a little.
"So Ms. Vanfang, would you like a little tour? I'd be more than happy to give it to you, personally." Chance said, giving her the biggest smile he could muster. Jake rolled his eyes and shook his head. Vivian gave him a sideways look with an eyebrow raised. "I suppose." She said as she walked in the rest of the way past him.
"Ohhh she's crazy about me, Jake. Did you see the way she blushed?" Chance stated excitedly, like a little kitten at Katsmas. Jake shook his head. "This is bad, Chance. What if she finds the hangar? What if the alert goes off and we have to explain that?" Chance frowned.
"Well, call your girlfriend and tell her to switch to the other channel for a while until she's done here so the main alarm won't go off when we're needed." Chance of course referring to Callico "Callie" Briggs, the Deputy Mayor and Jake's girlfriend of a year. Of course, very early into their relationship, Jake had to let the Kat out of the bag that they were the vigilante team, The Swat Kats.
Chance nearly fell off the lift when he was working on the TurboKat that fateful day when Jake let Callie into the hanger. She took the news rather well.
Chance still kicks himself for not trying harder with Callie. Maybe then he wouldn't be as lonely and slightly jealous of Jake and Callie's relationship.
'They seem to be over the moon for each other. I'm happy for them, but I always end up being the third wheel when we hang out. I'm a hero too and outmatched pilot, don't I deserve to get the girl too?' Chance thought with a slight frown as he went inside to catch up with Ms. Vanfang.
Meanwhile she stands near the couch, next to the TV stand. Vivian seems to be looking over Chance's collection of comic books sitting next to the couch. She lightly touches the cover of the top one.
"You read comic books?" Chance asked, surprising her. Vivian jumped slightly. "Yeah...I mean no! No...not at all..."
"Huh...okay." Chance said, crossing his arms over his chest. 'She reads comic books just like I do! Even though she tried to deny it.' Chance thought, trying to contain his excitement. She walks further into the garage, eyeing the arcade style game in the corner. Vivian comes closer to it and Chance follows and watches her.
"You play any?" He asks as turns to face him. She considers him for a second. "I'm not answering that." She says, but her small smile gives her away.
'She plays video games too! Oh...where has she been all of my 9 lives?!'
"Is this...why you guys haven't paid off your debt to the Enforcers yet? Distractions?" She asked with a slight smirk. Chance's smile fades into annoyance.
'Of course Feral would tell her about that. Probably brags about how he has us in financial slavery to him.' Chance thinks, being reminded about why him and Jake were there and inadvertently, how the Swat Kats and the TurboKat came to be.
"Oh. You know about that?"
She nods. "Part of the many reasons why I'm here."
"So, uh...how long do you have to watch me...I mean us...I mean..." Chance asked, stumbling over his words.
Vivian raised an eyebrow at him. "A couple hours every day." She looks over at the entrance in the floor with the ladder. "What's down there? Storage?" She asked as she pointed.
Chance looks over at the entrance to the hangar and shrugged. "You could call it that..."
She walked over to the top of the entrance. "Oh, then I need to account for the things in storage too..."
'Crud!' Chance mentally thought to himself as he quickly tried to stop her.
"It's meant for storage, but there's nothing down there but our workout stuff and some items that me and Jake store down there. Nothing work related or special."
She gave him a suspicious look but then gave in. "Fine I guess. I'm in heels anyway today and ladders wouldn't be easy..."
"I wouldn't mind carrying you down and back up." Chance couldn't believe the words that were coming out of his mouth. 'Darn it, this she-cat has her claws in me and doesn't even know!'
Vivian shook her head. "It's okay. Nothing I need for my reports anyway. What's up there?" She points to the stairs leading up to both his and Jake's rooms.
'Don't say something stupid, Furlong. Don't you dare say something stupid!' Chance thought to himself as he thought over his answer.
"That's where Jake and I sleep. Not together or anything! He sleeps in his room and I sleep in mine..." Chance mentally kicked himself. 'Way to go, katsenova.'
"So, just sleeping quarters? Okay, nothing to see up there then." She said as she walked away from the stairs.
Chance lets out a breath. 'Why am I such a lunkhead around her?! I just met her!'
Jake comes to where both Chance and Vivian are.
"So, did you give her the grand tour, buddy?" Jake asks as Vivian replied.
"Yes he did, Mr. Clawson. Can you show me where you keep the inventory of the junkyard?"
Jake motioned for her to follow him. "Right this way, Ms. Vanfang." He said as Chance stood there, alone.
'There's gotta be a way I can get to know her better.' He thought to himself as he went out to the garage to work on that old Kat lady's car, again for what seems like the millionth time.
